First time at this restaurant and we had fantastic dinner, the food was absolutely amazing. The mushrooms and hummous to start with were so tasty. The steak Dianne was spectacular, probably the best we have ever had, and the stroganoff was to die for. The portions were really generous but we still managed to share a dessert as we couldn’t leave without trying one.! Had the gluten free apple pie, which was delicious. We asked for wine recommendations to go with our meal and Nikki ‘s choice was perfect. We really enjoyed the evening and the food was truly amazing. Definitely will come back again when we are in Hull next time

So pleased The Lantern restaurant has reopened, subtle changes in the dining area and beautiful new toilet areas since last time we visited.This place is all about the amazing food & service you receive, the best steaks in town and cooked to perfection. The staff are attentive and friendly, Niki and her sister (I’m sorry I can’t remember your name ) are fantastic host & chef, polite, efficient and always on hand to refill a glass. Beautiful meal as always before lockdown 2.0, visited for an early birthday meal and the steaks were beautiful and cooked to perfection, the scampi starters were to die for! hospitality at its best with great service too! waiting for notification to book again after lockdown ends

I'm a regular of The Lantern's since I was a teenager, despite having moved away from Hull I still return to the city specifically to dine at The Lantern. The Lantern is more than a restaurant, it's a forever home; the level of care and attention from Maria and Niki is unrivalled, they've continued on Papa Florou's legacy and I'm most proud to see them succeed in embracing/sustaining the quality of everything that has always made The Lantern one of its kind, whilst making amazing changes to modernise the restaurant into its future. The food is beyond exquisite, it's phenomenal, if I lived in Hull still I would easily go several times per week! Maria is an incredible chef, it's most nostalgic and a rare treat to taste Andreas's food through his daughter Maria-I feel so lucky and proud to continue to get to enjoy The Lantern and return to this home as it has successfully relaunched itself and entered a new era. The Lantern is most comfortable and cosy, great atmosphere and a most affectionate and attentive level of care and hospitality. This is a restaurant you'll 100% guaranteed return to. I should mention, every precaution is in place as part of COVID, you'll feel safe and looked after at all times. I can't recommend The Lantern enough!

We live over 100 miles away from hull and regularly travel back to see family. We always make a point of having dinner at the lantern. It’s a long established family run restaurant, serving freshly prepared food. They do a steak to die for called the porterhouse steak. The wine list not too big and very reasonably priced. For something very different in the centre of hull it’s a real find for anyone that hasn’t heard about it.

Went for a fantastic meal at the lantern restaurant - really lovely atmosphere - felt really relax and at ease as the staff were really friendly - we visited as a family of four and all had different starters each one delicious the garlic mushrooms were the best I have ever tried - for mains we all had stake cooked differently for our tastes each one was cooked to perfection - along with chips and tasty cauliflower cheese. - with a few drinks and cheese cake to finish off this was a really fantastic night - can’t wait to go back

We’ve been coming to Lantern for several years now and every time we have received THE BEST food and service. This place is unique, fun and the food is out of this world !! I cannot recommend enough !! Andreas would be so proud of you Maria and Nikki, the way you have continued to run the place exactly how he would’ve wanted, but with your own twist amazes me!!Thank you again for an exceptional meal and impeccable service !!

Our first meal back since the reopening. The whole place has been freshened up and it really adds to the new feel of the place without losing its original charm. Service once again first class and the food as delicious as always. This place really is Hull’s hidden gem, if you haven’t tried it you really are missing out.

I went to Lantern to celebrate my birthday. Party of 6 and we are not easy as I am a coeliac and to say we also have some fussy eaters in our party would be an understatement. Nothing was too much trouble, which is why this restaurant has been going for 56 years, owned by one family. I felt totally confident that my food was gluten free as everything was explained to me fully. The food was cooked to perfection and the service was excellent. Thank you Lantern for making my birthday so special

Well what more can I say, another fantastic night. Food was absolutely spot on, "exactly like Pappa used to make" Maria you have nothing to worry about, all of your dads skill he has left you with. What a great teacher and one very good student. Not forgetting Niki, absolutely top notch table service as always, nothing too much trouble and so professional. Extremely dissatisfied. Prawn cocktail no better than available down your local and the asparagus starter was just six medium sized spears in melted butter served with buttered supermarket sliced brown bread with the crusts cut off. Our mains were steak diane, which was overcooked and casseroled, and pork medallions which was also overcooked and in an astringent sauce that suggested a lot of Worcester Sauce. All vegetables including potatoes were extra. This turned out to be an extremely expensive meal which at a quarter of the price we would still have happily rather not eaten.

Wow fab stroganoff and I’m a connoisseur of them. This isn’t cheap but it a good quality meal in a restaurant setting. Great ambience in a secret location worth hunting out.

Absolutely love this place, my family and I are regulars. I can honestly say every time I go I love it. Don’t take my word for it, definitely give it a try when you can.

Our first visit since it reopened late last year and I have to say the food is still superb. Excellent Stroganoff, Halibut, Greek salad and rice. It won’t be long before we’re back for another visit.

We’ve heard how good this place was for steak for years, so finally decided to try it! We’d heard from friends that the restaurant’s decor is very “old school” or ‘dated’, but actually we loved it: I found it really charming and pretty inside! We liked that you sit and have a drink in the communal area, although we were waiting for around 45 minutes even though it was fairly quiet unfortunately.I can confirm the steak is really, really good. My rare fillet was fantastic, and my girlfriends Pepper steak was excellent with the most amazing sauce. It was undercooked, but so nice she could eat it. The fries were lovely although unfortunately my roast beef potatoes were really hard. We also found it very reasonably priced; £63 for two steals, sides and veg and several drinks we thought was really good value! I would definitely visit again although I would order the pepper steak and fries. Aside from the wait and the potatoes being not great, we had a lovely intimate dining experience and the server was really lovely.

This place never disappoints with everything absolutely spot on. The restaurant has had a make over and the menu has been improved. We tried some of the new starter Pastitsio which was that nice we bought some to take home. All of the staff were brilliant with Niki and Maria always there to help. I could never leave without mentioning cheeky Chelsea who is always a bundle of fun when serving you and last but by no means least Antonio who placed a bet on us finishing our food. By the way...he won. The steak was huge and well cooked to what we asked for and was washed down with the new Cypriot beer and a bottle of Chianti. If you're thinking of going then don't hesitate. This is a wonderful place to spend an evening.

Been meaning to go for years and never quite got round to it until tonight and it definitely didn’t disappoint. Chateaubriand was absolutely perfect and do not miss out on the onion rings! Niki was a wonderful server and the evening was lovely. Will definitely return soon

Had the salmon tonight for the 1st time absolutely beautiful and a great portion.fantastic to see the girls and Antonio really enhancing this amazing gem.A few little tweaks to the toilets and flooring are new additions and some great nostalgic pictures adorn the bar area.There cant be better quality or value anywhere else in the area.well done on all the hard work and long hours you have all had to put in.

We had such an fantastic evening from start to finish. Service and food was simply amazing. The Halibut was huge! The porterhouse steak was cooked to perfection and with the side order of garlic mushrooms ( that we are still both talking about ) they are a must! Maria &Nikki; & team made us feel so welcome. We look forward to returning with the family next time.

First time visit this year and, for reasons too varied, an emotional return.

Well what a change to each table.. up grade is happening at this old but wonderful restaurant .. still run bye family for more than 50 years .. new food items on the menu but still get the same great steaks and fish.. but it’s moving with the times which is fabulous.. toilets are beautiful.. great location in town.. taxi will be ordered for you and nothing is to much trouble.. now run by both sisters and both doing amazing job.. xx

We visited last weekend and was so glad we did, we had mushroom starters all I can say is yummy yummy yummy, followed by melt in your mouth steaks, very friendly staff and family run. We will certainly be returning, thanks for a great evening.

My wife and I visited the Lantern restaurant on the 26/1/2020. The service from Nikki and Maria was brilliant, very friendly warm welcome . The food was outstanding. I would recommend a visit

when we visit the lantern we are never disappointed , with New chef Maria taking over the reins in the kitchen from her late Father or(Papa ) as the girls would say however one thing remains the same and that is the quality of the steaks !! They are second to none , keep up the good work Nikki and Maria ps love the little renovations you have done in the restaurant if you haven’t been I would highly recommend visiting this family run restaurant .

We went on Valentine’s night as we usually do as it is also my birthday. My first ever visit was 1970 and over the years the quality of every aspect of the Lantern (food, hospitality and staff) has never faltered.

Myself and my wife booked a table at THE LANTERN on valentines night from walking in to leaving was a fantastic experience the food and service are second to none the garlic mushrooms are the best I have ever tasted I also ordered a porterhouse steak which was cooked to perfection my wife ordered beef stroganoff which was amazing we felt so welcomed and relaxed the restaurant is now managed by 3 family members NIKKI. MARIA. and ANTONIO who are doing a fantastic job we was waited on by a young lady who was so polite and professional we are definitely returning. PS I know a certain little man who would be so proud of all 3 of you.

We have been going to the Lantern regularly for many many years. Since the sad death of their Father his two girls Niki and Maria have taken over the running of their family restaurant. It has always been our favourite restaurant in Hull and we were just hoping the girls would make a go of things. Well the proof of the pudding is in the eating so they say and after several visits in the new ownership I can confirm that this little gem is as good as ever. Investment in new decor is proving these girls mean business and some new ideas on the menu have been sampled and thoroughly enjoyed, including Chicken Stroganoff and Chicken in Garlic Mushrooms. All the other dishes are been cooked to the standards we have all enjoyed over the years. The recommendation is Get Yourselves There and enjoy the food and hospitality these two girls are putting on.

We visited this restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary, it was our first visit here and we really enjoyed our meal all the staff were pleasant and helpful in choosing our meal and the steaks were outstanding. We will definitely be returning again. Thanks for a lovely evening.

The food was great, steaks cooked how you want, veg etc. served separately. Nice atmosphere and friendly attentive staff

A charming old fashioned interior, but my wife and I waited over an hour for our mains (beef Strogonoff and scaloppine al marsala). The accompanying boiled rice hadn't been drained properly. The beef Strogonoff was good, but the scaloppine were made with pork rather than veal, and were thick, tough and virtually inedible. They were not really scaloppine and should not be described as such on the menu. An excellent bottle of St. Emilion, though (£25). The bill was £82 for the two of us, including wine, one gin and tonic, one shared starter, two mains, rice, two vegetables and bread.

A fantastic evening for two with great food and excellent service. Large portions, the halibut was excellent a superb evening out.

Party of 8 attended and all 8 porterhouse steaks were cooked as specified with good size veg portions as well, served quickly with excellent friendly service. Booked starters and mains in advance, which really helped staff and ourselves.

Well it’s still the best steak house in hull and the fish is right up there.. the family has changed and Maria is cooking now not papa..same classic and new ones on offer.. Nikki is the rock now behind the bar and front of house.. great team work.. never fails to supply great food .. more happy days to be had hear.. if you e not been in a while you will be impressed.

Regretfully, it was only with the recent sad recent passing of Andreas, that having been reminded of what was always a superb restaurant, that we visited again after an absence of more years that we'll admit.

If you want a modern restaurant with overpriced drinks & "picasso on a plate", then dont go here. If you want great food, friendly staff & over 30 years of consistently good food then this is the place to be. Family of 8 people all enjoyed the night with great food, good service & quirky 1970's deco, keep up the good work Lantern

Since Nikki and Maria have taken over following Andreas death nothing has changed the food is just as good the service great and the atmosphere excellent

Anyone that has visited this Restaurant in the past will not need to be told how fantastic the food is.

The last time I visited 'The Lantern' was around 2001, I was being 'weighed up' and examined, by my prospective Cypriot Mother in Law ;), and thank goodness, very little has changed. The service is still superb, The atmosphere unique, and the Food, prepared with Love, and as amazing as ever. The Lantern is a wonderful example, of a how a restaurant owner can put together all the right ingredients for a successful business, and consistently deliver year after year, decade after decade, knowing his customer, and offering a culinary experience that consistently satisfies. I just Love this place.

My husband and I went on saturday night (I'venever been before.) We entered, what felt like the 1970's, but in the most complimentary way. The staff, service and food was all amazing. Our waitress was full of fun and the food prompt and perfectly cooked. We couldn't fault it. Sirloin and porterhouse amazing. Will definitely return soon. Thank you xxxx

It was like eating in a museum (in the most positive way possible!). It felt very nostalgic being there and the Lantern made such a lasting impression. The staff were helpful and polite and the food was delicious.

Amazing food at a really good price! The restaurant is old and dated but don’t let that put you off, the food more than makes up for it. Can eat the steak with a butter knife!

Bit of a throwback in time - a bygone - a bit dated - part of the charm is the decor. The menu is a very 70s/80s, not the best I've had but well presented - although good quality. Pleasant and attentive service.and pleasant staff will go again for sure.

We decided to go to the lantern after reading the reviews. It was my wife's 73rd.It opened in 1964 and I'm ashamed neither of us had been there. It was as described ,very 60s. We where greeted by friendly staff who stayed us in the waiting area where we could see everything going on in the kitchen. We sat and ordered our drinks and talked. We both opted for the fillet steaks and watched them cooking both cooked perfectly we also ordered 2 potato sides and 2 vegetable sides. Very laid back atmosphere with pleasant background music. I cleaned my plate no worries, my wife left a bit of steak so being a gentleman I finished it for her. We couldn't find anything to complain about and I'm sure we won't wait as long to go back.

Was our wedding anniversary on Friday. I fancied a night watching HKR at Leeds. Wife was too nervous about game and didn't fancy it. Being the old romantic that I am we went to Lantern for a meal instead. Despite HKR winning I think we made the right choice; everything about Lantern was excellent. Welcoming staff as soon as we walked in; very good sirloin steak with mushroom sauce and chicken chasseur, nice bottle of wine, dessert and liqueur coffees to finish. Nothing but excellent service throughout. Thank you for making our wedding anniversary a wonderful experience to all of the staff at Lantern.

Treat for my parents (79yr old) it's been a long time since I visited but was met by Nicki and it was a great catch up , you are never rushed. The food was outstanding even my sister and brother-in-law got an explanation of the chateaubriand his lips were watering as it was detailed and prepared in a totally different way. Service absolutely brilliant including the cheeky newish waitress who took the dessert order great banter with us we all laughed , all I can say is we will be back and it won't be as long next time , thanks to all the staff for a brilliant night. It's definitely right calling it a hidden gem ...try it don't take my word you won't be disappointed

We enjoyed a lovely meal here last night and having not visited for a while it was so nice to come back and find that the standard of food and service was as good as ever.

What can I say but this restaurant is well worth a visit. Me and my husband throughly enjoyed every minute, the food was delicious and the service was excellent. Will definitely be visiting again, and recommending to family and friends.

We decided to visit the lantern for the first time after being recommended by family and friends. We were not disappointed the service and the food were outstanding. We had the garlic mushrooms for starters and can honestly say best I’ve ever had. For the main we opted for the chateaubriand which was pure heaven. I will be returning soon and would highly recommend this place to anyone. You MUST try the food here

Once regular visitors to the Lantern we decided on a rare night out (as them with children will appreciate) to visit one of our old favourite restaurants.

Always great to go back to the Lantern , its like going back in time . Nothing seems to have changed from the staff to the menu and the decor . Best Porterhouse steak ever , the fish was brilliant as was the asparagus and scampi , great service.

Why haven't I discovered this restaurant before!, food was fantastic, staff couldn't do enough and were very accommodating

Visited as a couple for my Wife’s birthday and chose this restaurant after recommendation from some friends . I’ve got to say on arrival the staff were very welcoming and took our drinks order while we waited for our table . On looking around the decor is either very dated or a typical Cypriot home look and if the latter is the case I apologise . The waiting staff are first class and more than happy to talk and have a laugh and joke with you when taking and bringing your order . The food itself tasted really nice especially the steak which was perfectly cooked to my liking although both meals lacked presentation i.e garnish which was a shame but as I say didn’t detract from the taste as we both enjoyed what we ate . Be aware that all extras like chips peas veggies etc are priced separately and can be ordered accordingly . What was nice was that you can see the cooking going on as the kitchen is open plan with the chef once again happy to chat . To sum up would I go again ? possibly not but I certainly wouldn’t dissuade anybody from trying it as I might just be being too picky .

This place is a gem. It has been in Hull for years so can't be doing anything wrong. The food is excellent and for those who complain about having to buy chips and peas separately then please read the menu and don't go. The service is very good and both Nikki and Chelsea are very chatty and make you feel welcome. I will continue to visit this place as I have done for over 30 years.

An old fashioned restaurant with well presented old values. The food was really nice and we would go back again. Very reasonably priced.

I have walked past the Lantern for years and years, decided to pop in for dinner, the decor is old fashioned not the whole place is SPOTLESS we had drinks in the reception area and then I ate mushrooms and stroganov, it was all tasty and the owners daughter who served us was very nice and super efficient. I will be back!

Great food great friends very good cooked food and very reasonable prices. It's a long time since we have eaten home cooked food in nice surroundings.

Had a lovely evening on Saturday , tasty prawns, amazing steak with a bottle of red wine. The only downside to this place was that we were to full to order a pudding. Fantastic service by the girls, thank you. If you can find anywhere else where you can eat a steak with a normal knife I’d love to know about it. SIMPLY DELICIOUS

This is our favourite restaurant in Hull, the best steak and chips ever. We have eaten there over the last 20 years and it never disappoints. The owners are amazing and always very welcoming. look out for it down Whitefriargate Hull a hidden gem above the shops.

The best fillet steak my wife and I have ever had, the pepper sauce is amazing as was the whole meal, you can tell when a meal has been prepared with passion. Fantastic service by Nikki who goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome.

7 of us had a meal here Saturday night some of us haven’t been for years some of our crowd have never been. We had fillet steak cooked to perfection the scampi starters were great as was the salmon We finished off with different desserts each all delicious. The food /service and atmosphere are first class. We won’t be leaving too long to go again.

Beautiful tender flavoursome steaks and the very best halibut for miles around. Great food and fantastic value for money

weve been several times now and this last time were not happy as we were charged over the top £200 for 4 ,x2 bottles wine.x2 pints and x2 spirits x2 starters x4 mains, the veg was £7 plus for x3 portions, shame as we will not return.its always been One of the best places for steak, my plaice was soggy and wet, a real shame as it always needed a refurb,but it still was always reasonable.

Went here on Saturday 17th November with my husband. Both had Fillet steak, chips and mushrooms. The steak was cooked perfectly, the whole meal, for me, was excellent, my husband wasn't so happy with the fries, they are quite thin and crispy, I thought they were lovely. We will definitely go again, although he will choose something different to go with his steak. Definitely recommend to anyone wanting a very good steak.

This has to be the best place for a steak in Hull and beyond. Every meal I've ever had here is just awesome. The steak just melts in your mouth, the fries are amazing as is the asparagus. Add to that a Greek salad and the Marchand de Vin sauce and you've got a winning combination. Cant wait to visit again

Service is excellent and you'll struggle to find a better stroganoff. Decor might be dated but it all adds to the charm and setting because after all you do have the same family running it after so long so why fix something that isn't broken.

We visited The Lantern last Saturday and had an excellent meal, nice wine and all done with great service from a team who you know enjoy their job and are not just there for the money. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

(Eldest daughter writing) It was my mum’s 40th birthday and she chose to go to one of her favourite restaurants. We went in and ordered our drinks which came quite quickly. When our food was ready we sat and ate a delicious meal. The desserts were great. Our waitress was very kind and helpful. It was a peaceful atmosphere and the music in the background was amazing.

We had a birthday dinner with friends, it was the first visit for something like twenty years. It was a real blast from the past as soon as we walked in we felt like we had travelled in time to one of our favourite eating places. It did not disappoint the service was excellent the food was magnificent all four us thoroughly enjoyed it, we will be returning soon, the staff were pleasant, attentive and efficient still probably the best steak house in Hull.

I used to go to this Fantastic restaurant from the age of 4. Weekly as a family. I have vivid memories of this incredible family run restaurant. Amazing food and an incredible family.
