Clean, friendly old fashioned local pub, good selection of largers and ciders, shame to only have one bitter on tap, but I would imagine that's down to lack of demand for more. Nice atmosphere music playing at a volume were its possible to chat, and not have to visit an audiologist in the morning.

What an outstanding pub, almost hidden away. Pubs are struggling a bit just now, but standards are maintained here. Spotlessly clean, excellent beer and friendly service. Don’t be misled by the plain frontage. At the Punch and Judy they do things properly. Very quirky little building, full of character and a charming beer garden. All in all an excellent pub.

I came across this pub recently at an open mic session our choir sang at. I really loved it, quirky, intimate real pub with good ale. Landlady was welcoming and the atmosphere was great. Pub has gone really down market lately, new management seems to have put off a lot of long standing regulars that have been replaced with loud mouthed oiks. Beer is inconsistent (I'd advise staying off the ales at the best of times). That awful smell, which has been a problem with the pub for years, has been getting worse!

When you pay over 11 pounds for 2 pints of lager in plastic cups it's not a good start. Then when you have to ask for 2 more pints as they are luke warm this also does not sit well with me. The bar was so busy as well that it took an age to be served. Needless to say, I will not be returning.

This is a long standing meeting up with friends pub that I only occasionally visit these days. It has had a chequered history; the grass carpet (left down a few weeks too long) for a St Patrick's Day celebration still comes to mind every time I turn my compost heap. The turnover of management seems to be a fact of the pub's history but it keeps on serving good beer to a mostly local clientele. The P and J isn't trendy thank heaven and is really only a local with food, but if you want a decent pint in a proper pub then I recommend a visit. Also very handy for Tonbridge station when the trains are up the creek.

Cracking visit with a good mate. New managers which may account for the disparity with some earlier reports. Went mainly for the beers which were great with a wide selection and well kept and cooled on racking in the bar. Good manager and staff and a friendly bunch of locals including four legged friends :) Had a pleasant time and watched some cricket, a bonus on top of the beer. Didn't consume much food (as is my wont) but all looked clean and fresh. Found the Gents perfectly acceptable, may have had a recent upgrade. What a proper pub should be, a meeting place, good atmosphere and good beer. I shall return!

What happened? Started out pretty well a year ago when we first went. Pie Minister pies were a great idea, good beers and some great tunes on the juke box. Good place to watch rugby but not an OTT sports bar. After the pies came basket food which was just greasy crap really. Now the service is terrible. I walked out once as I waited so long for a barrel to be changed and it took all two staff to sort. Last time I went in barmaid was more interested in her iPhone than serving customers. Poor effort...

I've been going to the Punch & Judy on and off for around ten years now. This is a small-ish local pub which sometimes does and sometimes doesn't do food depending on management. There's a small garden/smoking area at the back, tables, chairs and sofas inside. Since being taken over by the latest owners I've been really disappointed - the staff have been really rude and abrupt. Most recently, I was with a quiet group after a quiz and had bought a glass of wine - last orders were called soon after. The staff then angrily collected glasses and announced to drink up. A friend enquired about closing times and was told that last orders had been called and there was 20 minutes drinking up time (not "we usually close at 11:30" or some such time). I'm well aware of licensing and the regulations, however the way staff behaved and spoke to us was more like night club staff throwing teens out of a club than local regulars out of a pub. Under new management the staff no longer seem to care about regular customers or manners. I shall not be returning and anyone who does should be prepared to be spoken to with no manners and as an inconvenience.

My son recently had a visit to Tonbridge police station - just across the road from this pub - with Cub Scouts. It wasn't worth driving home then back again to collect him, so I met my husband off the train for a couple of drinks until it was time to collect our son. The Punch and Judy is a friendly, no frills, traditional back-street pub. They had excellent Harvey's and Tonbridge Brewery beers on tap. It wasn't particularly smart or trendy, but everything was clean and functional. It was good to see young (20-something) people playing cards and chatting.

I had booked a table for 6 people 1 week in advance and no table had been reserved for us! Instead we had to be seated next to a smelly dog and a screaming child from the front of the pub. (Who screamed the whole time) I ordered drinks at the bar and was served by a smelly old "geezer" (not what I would have put infringe of customers when ordering food) with a baby in hand. Lovely. The food arrived and was actually rather pleasant so no complaints there but our whole experience has been put off by the "manager" who was very rude when we complained about dirty glasses, poor customer service and lack of experience when it comes to consumers. I will not be returning.

The staff don't seem to talk to each other since we had to repeat our orders to another person who was putting it through the till and then again to the serving staff to confirm whether we wanted ice with the drink. Punch & Judy pub in Tonbridge used to be one of my favourites in the area when I was in Kent. However, things seem to have slipped a bit. Beer, at least the pint I had, was rank! The lager was awful too. Switched to that because I couldn't trust their cellar after the worst pint of Sussex Best I have ever had. Very difficult to mess a pint of lager up unless you have serious cellar issues! However, Kronenbourg was also almost undrinkable too. Sat in corner next to extremely top heavy weighted branchy decoration thing that kept falling on me until I was asked to move even though it wasn't my fault this particular piece of top heavy ornamentation kept falling over. It only needed the slightest touch and it would tumble. Got asked to move by landlord even though it wasn't my fault. Music is mostly Heart Fm style pap! Pub not a slight patch on what it used to be!

Have had this as one of my locals. There is a golden mile kind of feel to Tonbridge with eight to ten pubs within walking distance so it'd be rude to neglect them all. It is a lovely little pub. The staff are excellent and the pub itself open plan but cozy in all weathers. The locals are all good fun. They have BT Sport on TV which means rugby as well as football gets covered. The beers are Tonbridge and a couple of other rotating beers which are always well kept. A good friend of mine always said "the Punch" has a definite ski lodge kind of feel to it. That place where you retreat to at the end of the busy day to shoot the breeze over a couple of pints.

We visited The Hengist at 2pm on Sunday 10th November for a family meal of 6 adults & 2 children. The decor looked amazing and the initially very friendly staff took care of our drinks and foods orders well, encouraging us to order extras like gravy and roast potatoes at this point as ‘in his words’ if we didn’t order them now we would have finished our meals by the time they arrived. Having had 2 rounds of drinks all arriving in good time we started to wonder when the food would come. 2 starters of scotch eggs arrived about 30 minutes after ordering but unfortunately the sausage meat part was raw so we let the waiter know that we weren’t happy to eat them. An hour later (so 90 minutes after ordering) we still had no mains, the waiting staff now seemed to be trying to avoid us including to order more drinks and we had to call someone over to ask if at least the kids food could be sent as they were now getting hungry. Soon after a kids pasta and kids roast beef (which had no vegetables whatsoever priced at £11) came out. Still no mention or apology of our wait on food plus a couple of us were now without a drink. 20 minutes later when the children had finished their meals and no check on our table or explanation for our wait on food had been given we decided we had had enough and we would leave, asking for the bill of what we had consumed. A bill arrived including everything we had ordered including the missing meals, missing extras, returned starters and £5 each for the kids apple juices which were supposed to be included in a kids meal as well as a service charge percentage of all of that on top totalling £300! As you can imagine by this point we were quite annoyed, so having told the waiting staff as such, finally an owner came to our table but instead of apologising or trying to correct the situation we were made to feel like difficult customers. We left having spent over 2 hours not eating any food (except the children) and still having spent £90 (a few beers, 1 glass of wine and 1 gin & tonic). I haven’t left a restaurant this dissatisfied in a long time. I understand sometimes things go wrong in hospitality but some communication, an apology and an offer of reconciliation perhaps in the form of some complimentary drinks could’ve maybe corrected this experience to not leave us feeling quite so outraged that we will not only not return but will also actively avoid recommending anyone to try The Hengist!

Wrote this review over two years ago. Best Sunday roast in the area. Fabulous belly of pork with crackling, home made yorkshires, fresh vegetables and simply the best roast potatoes. All brought be together with delicious gravy.
