A lot of people are complaining about the wait, and yes, it wasn’t the tested but I’d rather have fresh real great food that I’ve waited an extra 20 mins for, than something that’s been cooked ages ago and reheated just for speed. I went a couple of weeks ago and it’s the best pub food I’ve had in a while. Really lovely! 🥰

Sunday lunch menu. The place was packed and really could have done with some tables being taken out to ensure efficient service. Food was very good but waited over an hour for it and if not cold certainly wasn’t hot. Dessert menu had 6 items but only 3 available. Cost 220 for 6 of us.

I have lived in Aylesford for twenty-six years and this is the best the pub has ever been. Ignore old negative reviews, under the new ownership you cannot fault them. We are now so lucky to have two of the best pubs in Kent in the village (the other is the Little Gem), but don't tell anyone or they will get too crowded!

We had no booking, but dropped in on spec. We could not have been made to feel more welcome. The publican and his staff were great, and the food (lamb & mint pie( just what the doctor ordered on a cold, clear day out from London. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. The rear terrace is right on the Medway river and the old bridge, very picturesque. Highly recommended if you find yourself in Aylesbury.

We had read very positive stories about this inn. We specifically drove through this beautiful village to have breakfast here on Saturday morning. Unfortunately... everything was closed, even though it should have been open not only according to Google, but also according to the opening hours at the inn itself. But it looks nice, I hope we come around again and find it open!

Recently reopened with new management. Went there specifically because it's local and wanted to show support. From previous visits there, the burgers were great, and the new photo advertising them on Facebook made me go back. Sadly, it was not as advertised but the burger pleasant enough. Generic chips, they were thin, lukewarm, and unforgettable. The red cabbage coleslaw was inedible. Huge raw pieces of cabbage and peppers with a brown dressing, I have no idea what it was, very disappointed! I'd probably go back to give it another chance, but not in a hurry. £17 for a burger.

Recently re-opened, and about time. As a local I’m really pleased we have The Chequers back … but it needs to be on point, as under the previous ownership it fell off a cliff. Monday night meal.. shouldn’t be a gamble but it felt like it might have been with how quiet and slow things were. That said, everyone was in good spirits and the place was very homely. Some of this may be hyper critical but meant to help… The menu is incoherent between starters and mains (Thai prawns were the most abstract entry. Give me terrine or crispy squid?) I also didn’t like the crinkled printed A4 and only getting one menu for the two of us, but we got another when asked. Basics though. When given the menu we were never told what the pie was or specials - had to ask passing staff. When ordering I asked for wine which never came, and was told they thought it was for with the meal… sell me up! Fill me with wine and then I’ll order another! Think business! Food took 30 mins and a chaser at the bar and never came at the same time.. but once it arrived it looked and smelled good. Steak and Ale pie and a chicken ballotine. Pie was good meaty rich flavour and a half decent mash. Chicken was moist and well seasoned, roast potato was microwaved I think, or sat under lamps at best. It really was absolutely ok, but for £20 a main I think more care on service and presentation is needed… OR knock it back a few £. Settling up was easy but would suggest put your service charge on the bill and avoid the awkward or disappointing “to add or not to add”. I’ll come again but will hope for a smarter menu and a more refined service. The place has HUGE potential in the village. It’s unique but needs to become its own thing… I think it will in time but only with good managerial oversight. There’s not a lot of competition in the nearest villages but folk will go to Malling if this place coasts along. Only because I’ve eaten out a lot, I’d say this place has terrific potential and an amazing opportunity to become a well renowned local pub and restaurant.. just got to tune it up and make it happen.

This place is a GEM. We walked from Rochester to Aylesford today on the Pilgrims Way. Got soaked. Were recommended this place at the Priory and had a superb end to our walk here. Amazing service. Think owners are new. Very friendly. Accommodated us even though they were busy on a Sunday. Food was superb. Amazing vegetarian Sunday roast. Good wine and awesome dessert. So overall, 5/5 for food. Service - so friendly and sincere. Waitress and the owner looked after us. We chatted and just had a nice cosy feel to the place. I really hope people disregard the previous reviews and give this place a chance. The new owners are lovely and the food was amazing. I left my handbag and scarf there by accident as I was putting my coats on and had a backpack with me. Bless them. They sent Harley running after us to the station (as we had chatted and they knew we were heading back to London) to give me my handbag. I’m so grateful for the hospitality and their kindness and effort. It’s such a nice feeling to have a glow in the heart that good people do still exist. Thank you guys so much for giving us such an awesome evening. A great end to a lovely day. I’ve been trying to call to say thank you but can’t get thru on the phone. I will be in Aylesford later in the month to do the next section of the Pilgrims Way. I will definitely pop in to say my thanks in person. Please keep up the amazing friend service and the good food.

Went for a roast dinner with my missus on Sunday the 18-02-24 a nice pub been there a few times, when I ordered a drink the only draught lager was fosters which I thought was poor for a popular pub, sat down for our meal I had a burger which was ok my missus ordered a pork belly roast with some lamb as an extra and we wait nearly an hour before our meal was dished up while other tables that came in after us were served up first, when my missus dinner was served it was all lamb and no pork belly when we spoke to the waiter he apologized and said he would get it sorted 10mins later he came back with 2 miserable skinny pieces of pork loin and we were shocked at this and asked for the manager to ask what’s going on to which he gave us 20% of our meal, me and my missus just want a decent meal not a discounted dinner, I won’t be going back there again it’s a shame as the same owner use to own the hengist which is around 200 metres from the Chequers inn

Our second visit. We went a week ago on the Sunday first visit . We arrived at 14:30, we had a table booked for 15:00. We sat in the lovely seated area at the back on the river Medway. Stunning around 15:00 we was shown to our table by the lovely log fire. Although it was more embers than a fire. The table next to us asked to see the manger and they complained about the long wait time. We waited an hour for our food and I had to constantly catch the waitresses attention to remind them that I was waiting for a drink still . Anyway our food came out and it was nice . A week later we returned for our second visit, I walked in to find out nearly all the lagers were off as they was waiting a delivery . We were shown to our table which we could chose from and rearrange the table as we liked, we had our dog with us which was nice . I waited 10 minutes for a beer as they was changing the barrel of peroni , when we ordered our food we found out that they didn’t have any halloumi either. I asked for another pint straight away as I know it takes them a long time to pour a pint . Few minutes later I had the last pint of peroni . Apparently the barrel they had just changed was empty as well. The food came out and the mrs didn’t have a Yorkshire on her roast , I asked for one and they quickly brought one out. I had 2 small pieces of beef which were well cooked to say the least . The mrs asked for another wine and they had run out of Merlot as well. After a visit to the men’s room I was surprised to see the hot water tap was still boiling hot after speaking to the manger the week before but I could see it just fell on deaf ears. No sign, the hot water feed must be coming straight off the boiler as you will literally burn your hands if you hold your hand under it . I was really hoping it was going to be a good experience as we are only local but a few small problems are really letting this pub down . Great location great place just a few things letting the whole place down .

Haven't been since it re opened so thought we would try it. Wish we read reviews first cause we would have gone elsewhere. Menu was different from on line with typically what we wanted not on there. Then certain foods they had run out of even though was only 7pm when we complained was told the food has to be spread over 3 pubs! Then waited 1.15 for our starter which was garlic bread! We asked 3 times for it. When it did arrive was cold and no garlic. So we left. Never again, such a shame cause had great time in there few years back.

Decided to try here after reading the mixed reviews. It was OK, we had 3 bangers and mash meals plus a Margherita pizza, chips, plus one round of drinks. Total price was £80. The food portions were fairly small but the food tasted OK. I wouldn't say the sausages were especially high quality or flavoursome. The mash was smooth though but needed more taste. The veg was crispy/undercooked but that's how I like it. The gravy was nice. The pizza was very average, thin base and pretty uninspiring. This wouldn't be so bad if the cost was not so high... £16 for bangers and mash and a small portion at that is just too much. The pizza I think was £12, again very expensive for what it was. Then finally £3.50 for a small tin of chips. Suffice to say I didn't leave a tip as I think the prices are at least 20% over what is justified for the food.

Having visited the Chequers around 2 years ago, I decided to return for my Birthday meal and How disappointed I/we were. Arrived on time at 13:00 having booked a table already, and were seated around 5 minutes later. No one came to take our order and 1/2 hr passed before we managed to get site of a waitress to take our order. We then waited a further 1 hour before our meal finally arrived. That was after mentioning twice to the manager and a waitress that we had not yet received our meal. Interestingly a couple who sat adjacent to us and arrived at around the same time were served there meal within 1/2 hr. The manager seem to indicate that they attend the large tables of 6 or more and gravitate to the smaller tables of 2 later. This seems to me a ridiculous way of serving customers. We certainly will not be visiting this pub again. We did however, at our request, have a reduction in the final bill of approx £15, and a very limp apology from the manager.

I’ve been here a few times to eat. The last time I had a Sunday lunch it was better than most pub lunches. Today I was very disappointed. The portions were much smaller, especially the cauliflower cheese. The dinner presentation was not like traditional pub roasts, but stacked in a chefie sort of way and topped with pea shoots - not needed on a roast dinner. The roast beef cost £4 more than the other roasts, but was rationed to two tiny slices. The vegetables were nicely cooked and the Yorkshire pudding was different to any I have had before, but quite nice. In all a disappointing meal today, nowhere near as good as it used to be.

This has always been good in the past with hearty portions. This time the portions were small, Stacked up in the middle of your plate,,,, , I had a roast beef.. there was two slices of beef, each of them, the size of a medallion from a Rasher of bacon and about as thick as that! Which for £19 is not a lot! About a month ago I had a roast beef there still £19 but it was lovely big portions, proper pub grub. Also, the cauliflower cheese is now about a third of the size as it used to be. Not to mention the bread board, That used to be a lovely selection of different warm breads with a bowl of sun-dried tomatoes and a balsamic oil dip ! This time It was just a part baked baguette badly cut up with the balsamic oil dip. Come on, leave the posh food to the restaurants, just provide some good pub grub like you were previously doing. Staff were as pleasant and helpful as always though! That’s why I gave three stars rather than two!

We were really looking forward to a Sunday roast lunch at the Chequers Inn and upon arrival we were quickly seated at our table, which was lovely and cosy. We were asked what drinks we would like, and asked for a wine list, to be told they had red, white, or rose. After asking what wines they had, we opted for a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, as they only had a Merlot or Pinot Noir available as red wine. After a short while our waiter returned to say that they did not have a full bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, so we changed our order. (Having subsequently found their wine menu on line I guess they had also run out of Malbec, Rioja and Shiraz, which is why I had to opt for the Pinot Noir - from Romania). After a long wait our drinks of one glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, one glass of Pinot Noir, two large glasses of lime and soda and one small glass of lime and soda were served and we placed our lunch order, having been told there were no burger buns - not a problem as all five of us wanted a roast lunch. For starters we ordered a ‘selection of warm bread with butter, olive oil, balsamic vinegar and tapenade’ and deep fried whitebait. After a very long wait the ‘selection’ of bread arrived. This consisted of a sliced overcooked baguette, with the tiniest drizzle of balsamic vinegar at the bottom of the olive oil and the tapenade had been replaced with finely chopped tomatoes and onions. The exceedingly overdone whitebait turned up after a further long wait. Then one of the roast beef main course turned up, which looked lovely, followed by the roast belly of pork with hardly any gravy so we had to order additional gravy (at a cost of £1 for a very, very tiny pot). The two roast turkey dinners and children’s portion of roast beef turned up after about a further 5 minute wait. The additional gravy followed 5 minutes after that. Despite numerous front of house staff walking past our table it was exceedingly difficult to attract anyone’s attention to ask for more drinks. Whilst we were eating our main course we could overhear the front of house staff laughingly updating each other with what was not available on the menu. Whilst we were waiting to place our dessert order another family came in, but on being told the lengthy list of items which were not available on the menu, they got up and left. When it came to dessert our granddaughter wanted sticky toffee pudding. We were told they had the pudding but no sauce. We asked for floater coffees and were initially told they did not have the cream for floater coffees. We were subsequently told they had the cream, so order a decaf Tia Maria coffee, a normal floater coffee and a rum floater coffee, and another lime and soda. After an exceedingly long wait, (we thought they had forgotten the order), our floater coffees turned up - but not what we ordered. The decaf Tia Maria coffee was caffeinated coffee, when we were told this we asked for a replacement and were told they had no more Tia Maria. Great shame as this is a lovely venue, but we will not be coming back, or recommending it to anyone as the service is so slow and the selection of what is available is not what is advertised.

The worst burger I have probably ever had in a pub and I’ve had a few… don’t order. Pizzas look poor and at £15 a meal you wanted better cooked food. Good location and drinks were as you’d expected but management of the pub and cooking of the food was no more than two stars.

We popped in here for lunch with our two children. We ordered some ‘artisan’ bread to start. This was simply a sliced up part-baked baguette and a bowl of olive oil with the tinniest drizzle of balsamic vinegar at the bottom! I ordered the sausages on the special menu with hand cut chips (as suggested by the waiter) but, when our food eventually arrived after an hour and 45 minute wait, I had mash instead. I questioned this but was told that they had run out of hand cut chips. We had already been informed that they had run out of chicken and this was at 12.30pm on a Saturday! The fish and chips both had chips though (which incidentally were also supposed to be hand cut!). We waited so long for our food that we were able to watch a man in the cottage opposite paint and re-hang his front door - we were quite literally watching paint dry!🤣 The whole set-up seemed totally disorganised. Another family came in quite a while after us and were served their food before us. They even ordered a burger and fish and chips the same as us and our children had to watch as this was brought out of the kitchen and taken to their table instead of ours 😡. Another table next to us also complained about the slow service so we weren’t alone! I have to say that, when the food finally arrived, it tasted ok but the whole experience left a sour taste in our mouths and we won’t be returning any time soon.

The food wasn't the best, but I am extremely fussy when it comes to a roast so always set my bar too high, the food portion was excellent and great value for money however the lamb could have done with a little less time and I would have preferred to have the gravy on the side - however overall experience would definitely tempt me back

We dined here for the Thursday lunchtime £8.50 fish and chip deal. We soon realised why it was £8.50 as 3/4 of the “fish” was raw batter. I assume this was to make the fish look bigger than it actually was. There were inches of raw batter surrounding the fish which tasted like soggy bread, clearly it had been fried in too hot oil which had cooked (burnt) the outer layer of batter, and did not cook the many inner layers of batter. We raised it with the waiter who confirmed the unidentifiable mass inside was batter, as he said everything is homemade. We would have preferred to have a smaller piece of fish which was actually all fish and not soggy wet bread-like batter. Also the service was incredibly slow. Such a disappointment as we’d dined in the pub on 5 occasions previously and rated the experience highly. Hopefully the issue with the fish and chips can be resolved by the kitchen.

Usually come here just for drinks but this time we dined for late lunch. The haloumi fries I had for starters were the biggest & tastiest I've ever had & were accompanied by a lovely salad plus chill mayo, yum! My husband had white bait for his starters & they were a good sized portion too. For mains we chose the award winning pies (£10 each on a Tuesday) and they were very tasty. I had fries with mine, hubby had mash. Both very good sized portions including the veg. For dessert, hubby opted for the apple crumble with ice cream plus custard as it was his birthday! The chef obliged & surprised us by serving up 2 portions. My hubby thoroughly enjoyed one of them (I don't do sweet stuff) & the other was boxed up for us to take home. Great customer service from the Head Chef Jay who we had a pleasant chat with about his food. A very friendly guy who clearly is passionate about what he does. Thanks for a lovely lunch

Me and my partner visited on a Monday eve. We had a table booked for 6:45. Our table wasn’t ready, and we were told to wait as they’d had a large party and needed to clear and separate the tables. Fair enough. 20 minutes passed, table still not ready. I asked the bar manager and he dismissively stated they are aware we are here and it won’t be long. 10 more minutes passed, and we were finally seated. Placed our order. It was busy as it was 50% off steaks so we knew we’d have to wait a while. Food took around 35/40 minutes to arrive, my partner had ordered a fillet steak and I ordered a lamb and mint pie. My partners meal arrived first, and I had to wait another 5 minutes for mine, which by then he was halfway through his steak. My partner asked the same bar manager if the pie was coming out soon, to which he stated “I don’t know, I’m just the bar manager. It shouldn’t be long” I have to say his attitude stunk. In the mean time, I noticed a table that came in about 10 minutes after us received their food before I did. When my pie finally arrived, it was fairly nice. My partner had ordered bearnaise sauce which he had to ask for because they hadn’t bought it over with his steak. It was really vinegary. No steak knife provided either so my partner had to sit there hacking away at his steak with a normal knife. We weren’t asked if we wanted any extra condiments, my partner had to ask for some vinegar. Never asked how our meal was. Very poor service I have to say. Thank god service charged wasn’t added to the bill otherwise I would’ve asked for it to be removed. Average food, poor service. Only good thing about it was the wine. Won’t be returning.

The braised beef was all gristle and bone. The young staff didn’t really know what to do about this. After sorting this out with different orders we were ignored after the meal to look at unhappy leftovers and chase staff for the bill. All in all a disappointing experience. The pies however are excellent but staff need a lot more experience and training regarding customer care.

Lovely views and the Thursday fish and chips are lovely. However the last time we went in August the staff were very disorganised. We got served steak without chips that was poorly cooked. I had to ask 3 times to get the chips and then the veg which also arrived one a separate plate. Not what you want when going out for a meal. It’s a shame because the building and bar staff are lovely, as are the drinks.

Food was very good. Sitting in the garden watching the boats go by with food and drink was a nice experience. Service only gets four stars as on that day as there were four experiences whereby specific requirements were made with the food and drink and they were forgotten about before the items came out. All were rectified, however four occurrences during one meal is a little frustrating. Nevertheless, I highly recommend and will be returning to eat again.

Food was good, but I think they could've served the ploughman's on a plate instead, it was quite hard to eat off the board. We sat inside and were disturbed constantly by the loud doorbell going off for the kitchen. Little things like this being fixed would make a world of difference

We have been four times now for the steak Monday, it is the best we have ever eaten and love they do half price on Monday which means we can afford a meal out as a family, will come every fortnight whilst this runs. Drinks they have two pints for £8 between 4-6 which also helps us. Have also been for lunch the other day and was lovely too. Very helpful via Facebook message to which is good for me Tracy C

Unfortunately waited 45 mins for brunch even though it was quiet. When it came the butter had melted onto the plate and food which made it all very greasy. New young staff were unattentive and not sure what they were doing. Amazing views, pity about the experience. The manager/(owner?) was very helpful but also very stressed. I'm sure it's not always that bad, just my experience on the day.

Great little place . It is not the easiest place to find as it is inside Snodland Antiques Centre which used to be the old cinema back in the day . The food is freshly cooked and there are some amazing home made cakes that are made by the owner Hannah who incidentally was the lead singer of Bananarama before Siobhan Farley . Once you have found it you will definitely go back .
