We were driving home after visiting relatives in Wales and popped in on the off chance of grabbing lunch. It was Sunday and they were only selling roasts, which is not what we were hoping for but as it was 1.40pm and they stopped serving at 2.00pm we decided to take a chance. We order beef. Parts of the meal were lukewarm but to be honest it was so good we got on with it. The beef was the best we have ever eaten. Two thick 'pink' slices and the gravy was so delicious. The service was good and if we are ever passing again we would go in

We went to the Powys Arms during a weekend away. 5 of us ordered food and drinks. It was very disappointing as 3 average meals came out and 2 meals and sides were missing. We did enquire and were told they would be with us shortly. 30 minutes later 3 of us had finished our food and the sides and 2 other meals finally came out. We spoke the manager as we were very disappointed that we had not been able to eat together and didn't really want to buy further drinks when we would have been leaving had all the food arrived together and were shocked by James the interim managers attitude! He first stated it was because the order had been written on two separate pages, we said we understood but this was not our fault and felt we should still be compensated for our disappointing meal experience, he then said (in a very rude and curt manner) that it was because there was a new chef. How remarkable we thought that these two issues should occur on the same day ruining our meal time experience and delaying our meal. By this time we were parched to say the least, so we enquired whether we could be compensated with a round of drinks. At this point james the interim manager became even ruder and curter now stating "you are just trying to get free drinks"! Now while I wish I had the skill and power to create these two events that ruined our meal experience to obtain free drinks, I do not. Incredibly disappointing dining experience and shockingly poor customer service and blatant rudeness from james the interim manager. Think further training is in order for james to ensure future dining experiences are not ruined in such a rude and shocking way.

Great find on our trip from North Wales heading south in our VW campervan, nice camping area next to the pub which was busy with locals and a Dutch couple also in a campervan … on a gloomy Wednesday’s afternoon! Plenty of ales and ciders to choose from and 3 good red wines on offer at the bar. Food menu didn’t have a massive choice but in a very rural setting without huge foot fall (I would guess) I see that as a very positive sign and boy we were not disappointed 😀 I flipped a coin between haddock and chips or sweet potato pie, pie it was then. WOW, short crust pastry with a lovely cheesy veg filling, perfect mash potatoes I mean perfect and baked carrot and stem broccoli on the side but to finish it off the most fabulous homemade gravy. We asked for the chef to come talk us through his secrets, he was so nice and engaging … what a joy.He even walked down to our campervan with complementary chocolate ice cream. All for £43 for 2 people with a pint of cider and 2 glasses of red wine.

A very mixed weekend with friends. Beautiful location good campsite and excellent Sunday lunch( Darren the chef is a gem and went above and beyond!) However friends who stayed in the accommodation were very disappointed! Unclean room NO hot water Not enough tea and milk for two nights! Door handle fell off bed base was dirty! Dead flies! Spoke to owner and manager and they accepted the above but when it was suggested that a fair resolution would be to offer some compensation the manager suggested a return visit at a reduced rate. Why would guests want to return when the experience was not a good one? So do eat there and enjoy the beer but be cautious about booking accommodation!

Went here for my husband’s birthday. They are dog friendly which is great. The menu is very limited, maybe because of the time of year. There were hardly any specials. My husband had the steak and I had the burger. There were only 2 other options. The steak was delicious and the burger was nice and juicy. It was a no frills meal but tasty. The service was prompt.

A somewhat disappointing place to stay the night. We were attending a wedding at Walcot Hall just up the road so decided this pub would be perfect being a short walk from the venue. Positives: The pub area itself downstairs is nicely decorated, bright and welcoming and the garden area and exterior looked nice too. The staff we saw and spoke to were all polite and helpful. The provided towels were clean and the bed was clean and suitable for a 1 night stay. We did have to ask to have the 2 separate beds made into 1 which was requested on the original booking, but this was corrected whilst we were attending the wedding. Also, as already mentioned, the proximity to Walcot Hall was a perfect short walk. Negatives: The bedroom we stayed in (room 4) was (in our opinion) in serious need of an update and deep clean. The entire room smelled of what can only be described as old chip pan oil/deep fat fryer oil. This may be due to the proximity of the pubs kitchen which we believed was directly below. All of our clothes (even ones not worn) needed washing when we got home as the smell clung to everything. The walls/floor also seemed thin, as we attempted sleep we could hear chatter coming from somewhere. The bathroom was very dated and looked tired, and interestingly the old oil/cooking smell was stronger in there than the bedroom. The mirror above the sink looked like it was older than we were (37 & 40). The light on the mirror didn't work and the pull cord for the mirror and the bathroom light were dirty. There was hair around the toilet and shower/bath that wasn't ours. A non slip mat in the bath that was yellowing. The shower itself was an over the bath shower which took forever to get to a comfortable temperature due to separate taps that spun for an age doing nothing before water for that tap came through. Also, the thinnest toilet paper I think I have ever used! In the room itself, little inexpensive things could be done to make an immediate improvement. For example, the light shade was dirty and tatty, a new shade isn't expensive and would be an easy fix. Same with the pull cords and bathroom mirror. Unfortunately I doubt the room would smell nice ever unless the pub ceases to use its kitchen or has a full refurb of the room. Unfortunately, there wasn't time to bring this all up with staff as we were meeting the wedding party for breakfast cobs, and staff were busy attending to this. Although this itself was also disappointing. A big dry cob with only 1 sausage, I only hope the bride and groom were not overcharged for this. All in all, basic and suitable but definite improvement needed.

The worst stay we’ve ever had in our entire lives. Myself and my partner stayed here with our 4 month old son as we were attending a wedding around the corner. They left us with no hot water for the duration of the stay, so we couldn’t even bath our baby. And every time we complained they kept making up excuses, you’d think that they would get it fixed straight away since the whole place was fully booked? Breakfast was disgusting, and served with cereal that had expired years ago (I took photos of this). A heavily pregnant woman was rushed off her feet and seemed to be the waitress, receptionist, and everything in between. We called for weeks after our stay to get a partial refund and to talk to the manager, and every time we had a different excuse, going as far to say the manager has just been rushed off to surgery to get us off the phone. Do not give these people your money and ruin your trip. If the manager would like to contact me for a refund that would be great, since we paid £100 per night and haven’t had a reply back from any phone call or emails in 4 months.

Very nice food BUT I emailed the pub 3x and sent a message via the website enquiring about Vegan options and had no replies. We booked a table anyway as we also wanted to stay on the campsite behind the pub. There were only 2x vegan options for mains which was disappointing. We ordered the sharing platter to start and then I ordered the Spicy Bean pie and mash with garden peas for mains. The sharing starter platter arrived and was very nice but the mains arrived about 10 mins later whilst we were still eating the starter. So the mains were sat going cold whilst we finished our starter. Please leave at least 15 mins between courses. The food was very nice but you do need to reply to emails and leave a gap between starters and mains

When they gave me an new steak I had no steak knife so had to ask again. I said to them I wasn’t prepared to pay - they took 7 pounds off. No offer of a free drink or anything. Terrible service. Lovely clean facilities and well set out campsite. The food at the pub was lovely and the staff very helpful and polite. Felt like a lovely family orientated campsite during the day. In the evening however the guests from Walcot Hall treating the road next to the campsite as a race track was a little unsettling. It was like being in the fast and the furious. The first night we were there they arrived mob handed at the pub and proceeded to drink and make merry at high volume until 11 when they all got into their cars and drove back up the lane. We were a little put out by the noise as it woke up both our dog and our young children as well as ourselves. We put it down as a one off and enjoyed the next day. As I say the facilities were immaculately clean. The second night the same thing happened in reverse, guests from the campsite heading up the lane and driving back onto the site intoxicated at 2am. We were unaware the two sites were part of the same business and may have reconsidered our booking if we had known. We would not have stayed a further night if we had not been booked as we were worried for our safety with the noisy drink drivers on site. Shame it ruined a lovely holiday and site.

After hearing that there is a new chef at The Powis we decided to have an evening out! With good intentions of having just a main course this was unfortunately pushed to one side when we saw the menu! There is a very good selection of homemade dishes and our table were spoilt for choice. We eventually plumped for smoked chicken and avocado salad and the warm goats cheese on pea and mint bruschetta with pesto dressing. I was a bit hesitant over the bruschetta but it tasted absolutely lovely, a real different combination!Main courses were the lamb burger and the chicken in apricot and coriander sauce! Both were outstanding and very generous portions! We didn’t think we could manage desserts but after a short break we were tempted to try the baileys cheesecake and the chocolate brownie! Again homemade and very good!We eventually staggered out, very full but having thoroughly enjoyed an excellent meal! Would highly recommend. Very good service and value for money!

Fantastic eaterie that hosted me for two lovely lunches this week . I feel very qualified to pass this opinion in that over my working life I’ve eaten in some of the so called best ... including the fabled Beverly Hills and Bel Air in Los Angeles , Oriental in Bangkok , Mauna Kea and Mandarin Oriental Kahala in Hawaii . Closer to home many stays at the Savoy and Ritz in London and lunches at the Ivy and the Wolseley. The Powis Arms easily matches this line up in food , service and general ambience but with no pretention or unnecessary formality. The food is terrific ( especially the sea bass !) and the cheesecake dessert ... the best I’ve ever tasted .Don’t take my word for it ... go see yourself ... you will not be disappointed.. So put it on your bucket list of pubs /eateries you must visit and make absolutely sure you tick it off . You will not be disappointed. Shropshire now has a world class gem with food of this standard . Well worth the effort to visit from wherever you are in the world .

We’ve been here before and the staff and menu has changed. My only complaint was the menu needs to be more descriptive. For example A “chicken burger” whilst being a happy surprise is not deep fried tosh, needs to explain it’s covered in passata. We stayed at the Powis Arms while attending a wedding at Walcot Hall. Pub is on the edge of the estate. Rooms were clean, comfortable and reasonably priced. We booked two rooms, one slightly larger than the other with the smaller room having a walk in shower and the other a larger bathroom with shower over the bath. Furnishings were in the traditional style of an older property.. Off site parking available. Pub meals are raved about, although we had breakfast food was not served on the evening we arrived (we should have checked the website before arriving). Breakfast was delicious. The dog friendly pub itself has a friendly atmosphere and would be an ideal “local” if only we lived closer.

My review is for the campsite. I have never stayed at such a grim place. The position is just lovely, the grass is mowed, the pitches are generous and on first looks its great, until you go to the shower and toilet block.

Booked on the basis that was dog friendly and it truly was, not banished to some back room. Wonderful laid back warm atmosphere and probably one of the nicest roast dinners out I have had in ages. Lovely vegetables, a good variety red cabbage, roasted carrots etc. Will definitely return, the ladies who appeared to be a running the place are doing a great job, although the quality of the food is always important it’s the feel as well, and I could have quite happily sat there all afternoon other than my husband was driving, we would have.

Although we live only a few miles away near Montgomery, we had actually never hear of the Powis Arms.....we are now so glad that we have visited! The pub is situated in the heart of gorgeous Shropshire countryside and is absolutely lovely - full of real character and an authentic local pub....no glammed up stripped back interior design here..it's the real deal! Food was quite simply...amazing. Spicy pumpkin soup starter was delicious served with toasted spiced pumpkin seeds and oven roasted parsnip crisps. Duck and apricot pate was delicious. Roast beef served beautifully with sweet red cabbage, roasted carrots and parsnips, fab home made Yorkshire puddings...Slow roasted belly pork with dauphinoise potatoes, black pudding and wholegrain creamy sauce....yum! Service was attentive and friendly, chefs are a credit to this lovely establishment. We will certainly be returning soon to enjoy their special Christmas Menu. Don't think twice...book it and enjoy!!

Stayed here B&B; for a friends wedding. Lovely from start to finish. Amanda was able to accommodate our Nissan Leaf on their campsite immediately behind the pub to recharge overnight. This is an EV friendly place people- provided there's a free pitch and you have a phase 1 to 3 pin plug adapter, you'll be fine.

It was a last minute decision to go to the Powis Arms and we have been a couple of times before and not been disappointed with the food. It was quiet when we turned up just before one but soon got a bit busier so there was a nice atmosphere. The menu choice is varied and with the roast option on a Sunday it was difficult to choose. We all decided on the roast beef in the end and it was very good. Sliced beef and brisket with roast potatoes, veg and Yorkshire pudding. Cheesy leeks and extra gravy came separately. We managed two desserts between three of us, which was chocolate brownie and ice cream. The staff were very pleasant and attentive, even the chef came out to check everything was good. Would definitely recommend.

Camped in the on-site campsite. No food available on a Monday night, but we thought we'd earned a pint after putting the awning up so called in for a drink. Very friendly staff & locals. Dogs were welcome.

A traditional pub with rustic charm. It was warm and cosy when we arrived for an evening meal on Saturday evening at 8pm and the staff were very attentive. There was a roaring fire and whitewash stone walls. The food was lovely, traditional pub grub at around £10-15 for a main and there were several vegetarian options. I had smoked mackerel pate and my fellow diners had Shropshire blue salad with date and walnut and sesame prawn toast all at around £6-7.50 each. I followed with cheese and tomato pie with veg, chips and optional gravy (veggie gravy available) for my main. There were options of rump steak for £15, sea bass, etc. It had a really nice atmosphere. Will definitely put this on our ‘go again’ list.

On a very cold and snowy Saturday the 3rd of March 2018 a group of 28 walkers arrived at the pub after giving them less than an hours notice of our arrival for lunch. It was short notice because of the weather we had to change the luncheon stop.

Staff were brilliant all weekend we were there. The delightful hostess greeting and organising very well indeed......despite the snowy conditions. With good walking nearby, cosy rooms, fires and good food we had a lovely time. If you need to attend Walcott Hall for a function stay here instead of there and enjoy the beers and full English breakfast for a lot less money. You can walk to the hall or drive on the private estate so drink/drive is not an issue!!

I've realised recently I'm quick to criticise establishments, yet don't praise; as I go somewhere expecting to be pleased. The realisation was; that places like this don't get the credit they deserve.

We went for lunch for my husbands birthday, the staff were friendly but the menu was very very limited would not advise fussy eaters to go, they also had four desserts and one of them wasn't available. However what we did order arrived promptly and was nice.

We were staying in a friends cottage in the village so visited this pub a few times. There was a large group of us worth young children also but they were very accommodating. The Sunday roast was just delicious and very filling! The setting, ambiance and staff are all lovely. We also visited for lunch on our last day and again they were really good at managing my dietary requirements. Bonus - they have lots of games available to keep the little ones entertained!

The service was friendly and the food absolutely first-rate. Can recommend the Ploughman’s which is loaded with cheese, really top notch ham, and lovely crusty bread. Would have loved to stay for cake but we were all too full.

we always try to come here when we can get in and don’t fancy cooking one ourselves. the meat selection is always good and very generous, their roast potatoes are the best - lovely and crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. it is a carvery so can help yourself. they unfortunately don’t have any mash but we just add extra roasties! their gravy is lovely and homemade with the meat juices in. the staff are lovely and attentive. our favourite place to go for sunday lunch!

We booked for dinner as we knew the White Lion had reopened for food with a new chef. We were not disappointed the food was delicious, we had the rib eye steak, the sea bass special and the penne vodka. All were beautifully cooked and served. The service was great and the staff were friendly. We will definitely be eating here again.

We are regular visitors to the Red Lion in Myddle. We return every time because the food and service is second to none. We always receive a warm welcome and we know how hard Pete and Jackie and staff work to make sure that their guests are not disappointed. If you fancy a meal out around Shrewsbury (lunch or dinner) then look no further than the Red Lion. You won’t regret it.
