They say location, location. location - and yes, it has that. But I'm afraid that it's grubby and somewhat intimidating. Price isn't everything. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

Avoid!! This is the most dirty place I've ever stepped foot it! You stick to the floor, sofas have holes in the arm rests where people have picked at them. Only drink from the bottles (and then wipe the tops to clean them) as the glasses are dirty. The journey to the toilet is an experience.. filthy walls and stair rails. Toilets with doors off, or no locks, mirror broken. Mens door has fist mark in it. Bar maid was rude when she bothered to acknowledge you.

Comenzaré mi comentario con una pregunta. . . ¿Cuántos establecimientos de esta época Post brexit puedes encontrar que te venden una pinta de sidra o cerveza por £1. 50 (media pinta £1)? No muchos. . . . Venga a la Tierra libra!

There are, shall I say, a certain clientele who go here, yes it is cheap beer but this place has nothing else to offer. Traditional spit and sawdust pub nothing else apart from the cheap beer to recommend the place - Sorry but I say as I find Unless you are desperate for a drink or broke, avoid like the plague and use one of the other watering holes in the town which may be more expensive, but have much better atmospheres.

Were do I start me and my daughter. Went out for a few drinks last night and we thought. We would go to the pound pub as we got there we got told we was barred what for had no idea there would not give a reason. Its a smelly pub anyway the toilets don't work properly also a lot of young people under age dealing drugs so yes I am so pleased. My daughter and I got turned away the pub wants shutting down the sooner the better

Been here before and yes it's not a posh place and I do not use the toilets at all , but if your after a cheap pint then your in the right place . It could do with a spring clean plus the locals are friendly enough.Pint £2:50

I reviewed this place a year ago when it had just become a pound pub and said I would return in a year to try it again. I did just that a couple of weeks ago and if anything it's become worse. The smell of cigarette smoke is still over whelming not just from the beer garden to the rear but also now from the front door. The barmaid was friendly enough, but wasn't helping matters by standing in the front doorway every ten minutes for a fag herself. Some of the clientele looked like they'd already had too many pounds worth of beer and the whole place lacked atmosphere. It's just what it sets out to be some heavy drinkers ploughing through as many pints as possible around the bar where they can swear to their hearts content with the staff. It's still an avoid for me.

Worst pub in Newark, Ok if you like to be stared at as soon as you enter till the time you leave! Foul mouthed and loud customer, usually already had too much. Outside ashtrays had babies dirty nappies in! Stairs to the toilets need cleaning, black grime on handrails and walls, the smell is disgusting!!

We just had to try it as walking by. One Pound was a bit misleading but I get the point. Most branded beers were a pound for a half and one fifty for a pint. Pint of Boddingtons and two Sella 4%'s for £4.50! Awesome price, yes it's not going to attract many posh people, but so what. It's was just like wetherspoons used to be. 50p a game of pool. Will definitely go back next time I'm in Newark.

Utterly awful, brings down the other pubs around it. Full of people looking for trouble - AVOID. I'm surprised it still has a license given the number of underage drinkers

This used to be a wonderful pub, and I don't know what went wrong and why it's become a grubby annex of Wetherspoons. Also, nothing actually seeMs as though it costs a pound, since a J2O cost a ridiculous £2.30. Err...?!

The class of customers you can image are draw to this place cheap beers!!!!!!! for someone like old age pensioner its great but toilets need to be address just getting there means walking on carpet that sticks to you feet. Can't see it being a winner the average man would walk away like me has seems to be over run with local drunks. If you want a fight it's a place lots of cowards visit. Very brave bar staff !!

I visited the Pound Pub last week with a few friends from work. It was ideal for a few Friday night drinks - very cheap drinks and the beer garden could have been anywhere as the sun was shining. To give an example of the very cheap prices here's an example of the round we were buying:3 pints of Budweiser1 pint of Fosters1 pint of Strongbow1 double Vodka and orangeTotal £12.50 AMAZING!What's not to like?

I saw the advert in the local paper saying the Mayze had become a pound pub so I thought I would give it a try. The pub seemed fine and at only £1.50 a pint I was very happy; however the smoking area to the rear of the pub is right next to the door and with it being a warm evening the smoke drifted in to the pub. I'm not that bothered usually but there was enough that it actually felt like pubs used to when smoking was still allowed so I went elsewhere for the next couple of pints. The trouble is because of the close proximity of the smoking area I can't see how the situation is going to be easily resolved. Might try again in a few weeks to see if anything has changed.

We recently moved to Newark and are trying different places. We visited the Mayze after returning from holiday in Spain with excellent freshly prepared food. We were hoping for fresh British pub fayre. Which is essentially what is advertised. The service at the bar was friendly, our meals took longer than expected to arrive but we thought it was due to the (advertised) freshly prepared food. However on arrival my salad looked as if it was prepared the day before and my steak which was requested medium rare was although cooked this way was not the fresh pink and slightly bloody colour in the middle i would expect. I suspect it had been frozen prior to cooking, it certainly did not look fresh. I have visited this pub before for drinks on a busy evening and although it is a standard watering hole the food is most definitely substandard. We will not be eating here again unless they change they're chef.

The Mayze has appeared in the Good Food Pub Guide and so I chose to have Sunday lunch there on my first visit to Newark. Unfortunately my 2 friends and I were disappointed with the food, service and interior. The decor has become shabby and needs a coat of paint. There was only a modicum of salad with the Ploughman's Lunch. The Roast Chicken came drowned on a plate of gravy and cheese sauce, which I would have preferred to be in separate dishes to choose one or the other, or a smaller quantity of each. The side dish of vegetables included poorly cooked leeks that were inedible. The food was cold, may be because the dishes/plates had not been warmed. The waiter did not return to our table to ask if everything was alright, even though there were hardly any other diners. After the meal the waiter did not visit us to ask if we wished to order a dessert, so we left to have our dessert elsewhere. Nor did he come to our table to ask if we wished to have any more drinks, on a hot sunny July day. My friend felt he had not been given the right amount of change and when queried it before our meal was served, he received a refund as they made a mistake of around £3. I think that next time I'm in Newark I will avoid the Good Food Pub Guide and choose a pub that is busy which is usually a sign of good food.

I discovered this pub on a wander around Newark , looking for an evening meal. Good value and very tasty food. The brie and grape chutney was divine. The Scampi was a massive portion. Good cider to wash it down with. Shame it was so quiet.

Had a lunchtime meal at The Mayze,it looked o.k. inside and out but was compleatly empty, I now know why.My wife ordered a Tuna Salad which the menu said included Tuna, sliced new potatoes & salad, which appeared to be a reasnoble sized lunch. On examination there was no potatoes, the chef said he was sorry but they had run out of potatoes. She was offered no alternative or refund, when she sugested that it would be sensible to inform customers if they couldn't fulfil what was listed, so they had the opportunity to re-order,the chef just said sorry again. We were also charged two different prices for the same drinks.I would not return to this venue and suggest that it is better to try somewhere where the staff offer reasonable service.I wonder if I had ordered a whisky and soda,if they would charge full price for the drink if they had run out of whisky?

We were told on arriving 6.30pm that if we wanted to order food we needed to do this asap as the orders stop at 7pm.The table was cleared but not wiped. The food came and was awful the steaks were tough and when staff were asked for steak knifes they told us they didnt have any left ! The lasagne was warm not hot with floating liquid around the sides... didnt eat it !We asked for puddings to be told we were to late ,so we ordered coffee at £8.50 for 6 cups also told that it didnt come with mints. Before leaving we used the toilets which were dirty. One of the chairs in the lounge areas had a broken leg and the material seating was stained and in need of a good clean. The boards in the pub advertised live bands however we left around 9.30 and there was no sound of music ! Such a shame as we were in great company and the place is in such a prime location. The food and service was so bad we all found the experience so funny ,it was like Faulty Towers !I wouldnt recccomend and will not be returning.

We’ve been working away from home for the past five weeks and have eaten at The Post Office in Newark almost every night. It’s become our go-to spot! The staff here is fantastic, always welcoming and attentive—Kenzie, in particular, has been amazing, making sure we’re well taken care of each time we come in. They even switch the sports channel to our local team’s games, which makes us feel right at home. The food is top-notch! We had the Jingle Bell Beef burger, and it was excellent—perfectly cooked with incredible flavor, paired with crispy, beer-battered onion rings. We can also highly recommend the mixed grill and fish and chips—both were delicious and generous portions. The beer selection is solid too! If you’re looking for great food, friendly service, and a spot to catch a game, The Post Office is the place to be. We’ll definitely miss this place when we head home! ( coffee & smashed glass )
