Thought we had booked a double bed. Two singles which we pushed together. But still very seperate. No king size duvet. Which was a let down.

I visited here with my lass for a quick bite to eat on a Sunday. The place is very clean and the staff are very friendly. I got the gyros for £17 which maybe a bit steep for what it is but I was hoping for something unique. My lass got the whole tail scampi and chips. Presentation of the food was nice and inviting. However…… when eating her scampi she noticed a smell of it being off and inedible, it obviously put her off getting anything else, the staff apologised and refunded us for that meal. Mine was ok, but it was abit lack lustre and was missing that Greek feel. It tasted more like a chicken wrap. Overall the staff are brilliant but the food is lacking TLC and the food needs to be checked more regularly to avoid any off food.

Visited this bar on recommendation from work colleagues. Arrived and was shown promptly to our table. Order taken by friendly and polite staff. The food was lovely and my wife loved the homemade pie. Everything was delicious and the atmosphere was great. I even pushed the boat out and had a cheese board. There was so much to take in just for one, so I had to take a doggy box. Very enjoyable experience and will certainly return.

Had a recent stay at the Portland Lodge in Ashington, Northumberland, and I have to say I was absolutely staggered at the all-around quality of the hotel. The room was secure and impeccably equipped and maintained throughout the stay by the fabulous room team. The staff in the bar and restaurant (always dressed cleanly and smartly in their Portland uniforms) were as caring about the level of service they provided and as professional as any you would find in a major hotel chain. And the food, well, what can I say. It's absolutely amazing, springs to mind. The menu offers a variety of themes, ranging from Mexican, to authentic woodfired pizzas, to home cooked, fresh "Pie of the Day", to bespoke, Portland designed delicacies such as Balmoral Chicken, as well as personal favourites of mine, deep fried lasagne and home made yorkshire pudding filled with luscious, generous beef filling. The creativity and care applied to the cooking are abundantly evident and, more importantly, consistent. Serving sizes were incredibly good, too. The chefs and their team should be very proud. The brilliantly designed beer garden is nothing short of stunningly vibrant on a sunny day. It is like sitting in somewhere in the Mediterranean, with a selection of beverages, alcoholic and non alcoholic, to match. It was incredible and uplifting to experience a hotel, bar, and restaurant demonstrating such consummate ease with itself and quality in Ashington Northumberland. It was so impressive in its all-around offering that I rarely felt the need to leave the hotel. It is little wonder that people travel long distances to enjoy the Portland Lodge and its sister offering in Ashington, the FoxCover Ashington, or that hotel guests return again and again for both business and pleasure once they have visited. The Portland Lodge and FoxCover Ashington additionally provide an ideally situated gateway to explore the beautiful scenery and sites of Northumberland easily. At a time when many hotels do "just enough" to justify their cost, the Portland Lodge simply goes way and beyond as a matter of course. Its highly unique, highest quality offering is a credit to its management, it's staff and the region as a whole, placing it seamlessly on a par with other comparable offerings anywhere nationally. This praise comes without exaggeration from a former London lawyer who has travelled widely both nationally and internationally. Try the Portland Lodge and Foxcover Ashington out for yourself, whether for business or pleasure, and I predict you that you will not be disappointed! 💯 👍👏👌

A visit with friends that was selected by one of the group who had pleasant lunch time meals at the Portland in the past. Our mistake was to book a table for 5-30pm ! ( not lunch) ! The welcome was great, the service from Ray was exceptional, unfortunately the meal whilst pleasant, did not match up to the meals that our friend and “ recommender “ had previously enjoyed at lunch time servings! What a shame and at nearly £70 for 4 average meals, I don’t think that it will figure in our plans for future meals together?

My partner and I stayed at the portland for 1 night on Saturday the 1st of June. Firstly when we looked at a booking the booking on another site the room price was lower than the hotel price. The booking site said the hotel could offer a discounted price. We thought okay let's give the portandhotel a phone. We spoke to a male who said that it was only the hotel manager that could give the discounted price to call back. Which we did well what can I say this turned out to be a right fiasco and ended up not booking direct with the hotel. The manager thought he was giving us a great deal by throwing in breakfast and parking bringing the price to £150 for a one night stay. We declined the offer and eventually found another booking site for the same room for £99 for night no breakfast but we did pay the £10 for parking. The parking isn't great at this hotel and is at the back. patrons using the bar and restaurant use it as well. The car park was virtually full when we got there. I would wait until you arrive before paying for parking. Now to the room it was okay but I wouldnt exactly say it was a superior room. Kingsize bed was two single beds pushed together and we could feel the split through the protective mattress and bottom sheet. The pillows we had were terrible and need replaced. The mirror is right next to the tv above the kettle and coffee machine and looks totally out of place. Only an observation but I feel that the mirror could be positioned in another part of the room. Now to the tea and coffee facilities there was only two coffee pods at the coffee machine more of these I feel could have been provided. There is a fridge for your own use all be it emptying again I feel that maybe some bottled water could have been provided. We didn't sample the food so can't leave a review on the restaurant. A pleasant stay would I stay here again possibly. Do I think its value for money at £150 with extras for one night absolutely not. I think for what we paid for one night was the right price for this room

Called in for lunch with my Mum and her BFF (both aged 89), so just wanted somewhere local with a car park not too far from the entrance. We were made very welcome and served drinks by Barry who was great; his menu knowledge was extensive and steered us towards lighter food items. Although I’m a Northumberland Arms, Felton ‘diehard’ the home cooked food here was very very good; plenty variety, nicely presented, very reasonable and most importantly tasted great. The interior is warm and inviting. No room for dessert but we will return. Thank you.

Booked through Expedia. When we arrived to book in, we were told parking would be £10 per night and £15 per person for breakfast. The GM said Expedia should have informed us. He said we could just pay for 2 nights parking, and on the day we left I went over to pay on the Sunday, only to be told he had already taken it of my card. I looked into the info from Exepida and it did mention a parking charge. There is no were on the Portland Web site about parking charges or paying £15 for a breakfast. I had initially booked for 2 night through Expedia. We decided to add another night so phoned the hotel. When I went to pay, I got the 2 night for £90 and paid £100 for the 3rd night as I went direct to the hotel. On the Friday afternoon whilst looking out our room window, I witnessed an exchange of money for drugs in the car park. The GM kept addressing me as Mr Tom. The room was nice. The staff pleasant. However we will not be going back.

A very dissapointing experience and misleading hotel information. No room service and only Italian pizza and pasta available at 6pm when I arrived. The room was rundown, curtain poles damaged and loose. 1 pillow was stained all over and disgusting. Another had a smoking burn hole. There was faint black stains on the sheet and other pillows. The toilet position in the bathroom was far to close to the wall and the radiator was in the way. The door rattled and banged everything someone walked past. The upgraded king-size bed was to singles pushed together with a king-size mattress but one of the beds was inadequate support. After a long drive and not knowing the area I stayed but £125 room was shockingly over priced. You don't always get what you pay for.

Went to visit our son and stayed here overnight. We’ve never travelled North before so had no idea what to expect or what hotel would be like. Arrived in the afternoon after an 8 hour drive and the check in was quick and extremely efficient. We were shown to our room by the manager who was very helpful and explained about the hotel. Our room was clean and well equipped. We had dinner in the dining room, the waiter was fabulous, super efficient and helpful. We had the moules which were delicious, the steak which received high praise and carbonara which was freshly made and faultless. After a comfortable nights sleep, we had breakfast in the dining room. The breakfast choice was amazing, with fresh fruit, yogurt, pastries and cereals and cooked breakfast along with a selection of menu options such as smashed advacado on toast and eggs Benedict. We settled for the cooked breakfast which was amazing and we had no complaints. The breakfast waitress, explained the breakfast choices and where everything was. We could not have wanted anything else, there was plenty of choice. At lunchtime we were joined by our son and his family and we had a carvery lunch which, following our previous meals did not disappoint. The meal was delicious and there was a selection of meats and fresh vegetables with the biggest Yorkshire pudding I’ve ever seen! For location, service and price, I do not think you could do better than staying here. The staff were amazing and quite frankly, made you feel so welcome, you didn’t wish to dine anywhere else.

This is one of our favourite hosteleries for our weekly Friday lunchtime meals out in retirement. I must admit that this is in a large part due to to it serving the tastiest and best value fillet steak around, served as a Wellington, with a selection of sides included, including truffle mash (though sides are extra with other mains). Oh, and also as, though it has no real ale on hand pulls, it does a nice pint of keg Neck Oil India Pale Ale, though it is 50% overpriced at £6, as opposed to £4 elsewhere. The menu features a good range of lunch time fayre, including, as starters, a cracking prawn cocktail (though the latest version is not as good as the one before, which had a little caviar on top), haggis bon bons, Thai fish cakes, black pudding and poached egg, seafood scotch egg and garlic and rosemary Camembert. As well as the fillet, mains include Salmon Wellington, Sea Bass, curry, lasagne, corned beef pie, a massive plate of mussels and various chicken recipies, one of which my wife had. Overall then, a good value, quality, pub eatery, though be warned that it can get a tad busy and thus noisy on Friday afternoons.

Went for lunch, quite expensive and meh quality... Whilst the main lunchtime specials weren't too badly priced (£7.50), the quality could be better (chicken with the flatbread was definitely prepackaged/supermarket meat and quite watery). My lasagna was ok, sauce tasted like it came from a jar though. No rose wine and their blush wine was not great especially at £7 a glass. My pint was £6. Chips (£4) were ok, I could tell their oil needed changed though. Cheesecake was the highlight although I was overcharged on the bill for it. At just under £60 for a lunch and 4 drinks, we'll not be back soon (and probably go to a nearby alternative which is both better value and quality).

Let's start with the bad points. When I arrived they tried to charge me 10 pounds to park? Excuse me I'm a paying guest? This made me very angry. In my opinion this may be so they can present a lower price but then you arrive and they think you will begrudgingly accept this shake down. Sorry I'm not accepting that so I parked for free 30 foot from the carpark in the street. The room was fine but I was so angry this ruined my stay so I have to be honest I would never come back. Pro tip: Treat customers nicely and they will return and recommend a place.

Ordered 2 prawn with Marie sauce sandwiches. I with chunky chips and 1 with soup. The sandwiches were disgusting. They had included avocado which was soft sour and brownish One of the sandwich bread slices was the end cut, stale and half the size of the other slice. There was no mention of avocado on the menu so it was just as well we had no allergies. This is the worst meal I've been served at the Portland and couldn't eat it, I have organised many group bookings. Will think twice of visiting again. They apologised asked what do we do from here and we said we didn't want any more food. From that moment we were left sitting unattended and we received no further recognition so we left.

The room itself was decent Well equipped. Bed wasn't particularly comfy but it was passable. Parking £10 a bit of a shock and at £15 each for breakfast, we gave it a miss. The main issue is the level of noise in the lodge. I could hear every conversation from the room next to us, even low level chat. I think the TVs must all be fixed to the wall headboard side of the next rooms as the TV noise behind our heads was very intrusive. Someone was snoring like a bear. It happens, however there must be zero sound proofing as we had to use ear plugs through the night! Sorry, hate to give a bad review, however I can't recommend at all.

Stayed here for 2 nights. Room was spotless and comfortable. Very good meal on first night, although rather large portions. Very friendly staff. Quiet hotel. Like other reviews we thought the £10 parking charge per night was a bit expensive. Would stay again. Thank you

I recently had the pleasure of staying at "The Portland" hotel, and I must say, it was an absolute delight from start to finish. This outstanding hotel exceeded all my expectations, and much of the credit for the outstanding experience goes to the hotel's owner, John, and the Front of House Manager, Khalifa. Throughout my stay, John's personal touch was evident in every detail. He took the time to greet guests personally, engaging in friendly conversations and making sure their needs were met. It was evident that he takes immense pride in The Portland, and his dedication to creating a memorable experience for his guests truly sets this hotel apart. Khalifa's passion for hospitality was unmistakable, and he took customer service to a whole new level. From the moment I stepped foot in the lobby until the day of my departure, he was there to attend to every need with a smile. His attention to detail was impeccable, and he seemed to anticipate my needs before I even realized them myself. The amenities at The Portland were also outstanding. The rooms were spacious, elegantly designed, and immaculately clean. The bed was incredibly comfortable, guaranteeing a restful night's sleep after exploring the city. The hotel's restaurant offered a delightful culinary experience, and the attention to detail in every dish was apparent. In conclusion, I cannot recommend The Portland enough to anyone seeking an exceptional hotel experience. John's dedication to his establishment and Khalifa's impeccable hospitality make this hotel a true haven for travelers. If you're looking for a place where you're not just another guest but a cherished part of the family, The Portland is the place to be. I eagerly look forward to my next stay at this extraordinary hotel.

Ideal location for a family visit in the area. Room could not be faulted, spacious, clean and facilities even included a compact fridge. Food was freshly cooked, particularly the breakfast which was a great start to the day. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful throughout our visit.

I stayed a Saturday night in July with my 87 year old dad in a twin room (room 1). . I had contacted them in advance as I needed a downstairs room and the communication was excellent and they were very helpful. Upon arrival I was met at the car park outside the room and shown to the room. The room was very clean and had tea and coffee too. I had read a few bad reviews about car parking costing £10 but I thought that was fair. We did not eat there at night but did have breakfast. We were there at 8am . The lady running the service was very polite and explained everything. My dad had kippers which were cooked fresh and he said we're delicious. There is a great selection of hot and continental food. I had some cooked food and my only criticism was that the bacon was over cooked and hard. Beds were comfy and room spotlessly clean. Checkout was easy as I had paid in advance. Along from the hotel is a small convenience store and a fish and chip shop. We had a great stay

Recommended by Corie your receptionist to pay £10 to use your carpark because its a really rough area. £15 for breakfast….?? Zebra crossing flashing lights all night.. The noise from the pub below was horrendous Description in two words. DONT GO.

Room was lovely and clean and despite being close to the outside bar area it was surprisingly quiet. Would recommend it for a central base whilst exploring the beautiful Northumberland.

Noooo. It was horrible. Much to noise from the bar area the zebra crossing is outside so you get flashing lights all night. Ten quid for the car park because the receptionist Corrie said “ this is a really rough area we can guarantee your car will not get broken into…

Staff were lovely and welcoming from reception to bar, restaurant and then breakfast. Echoing everyone else, wasn’t expecting the £10 car parking charge but otherwise, happy with everything for the price paid!

Lovely hotel, nice comfortable room and great staff. The overnight on site parking charge of £10 did seem a little cheeky though.

I recently stayed here on a business trip for two nights, first the good points- The hotel was very clean and comfy and the rooms were a good size and modern, although I could t connect to their wifi and my phone signal was poor when inside the hotel. Now for the mot so good points - it wasn’t the cheapest hotel to start with @ £176 without breakfast however it looked nice. I arrived early (8:45am) on the day I was checking in as I had an early meeting, only to be told as I was early there would be an additional charge of £20 as check in time was 3pm. Next I was told I had to pay £10 per day to park my car in their car park which not knowing the area I had to do ( did find out later that there is plenty of free parking on the streets) . I decided to buy breakfast on my arrival as had been travelling since 5am, only to be shocked that a full English and a coffee were £13. To summarise, my stay was comfortable but the total cost for two nights including the breakfast I bought was £230 which is outrageous and therefore I wouldn’t stay again

A group of us arrived after 10:30 and paid £10 each for the buffet breakfast, we were lucky if we managed to get 1/2 plate each of cremated black pudding and anaemic bacon. Complained numerous times that there was no food for us to chose from, staff then told us the buffet closed at 11:00 anyway and that there would be no more food made available. No apology offered, terrible food, even worse service from the most expensive bar in Ashington.

Simply amazing, the fish and chips are out of this world, and there is no doubt about it, they were the best I've ever had. This experience was also nicely paired with the customer service, the team are the real asset to St Mary's Inn
