Charltons in Northumberland

What used to be a hidden gem, has unfortunately now gone right down hill. We stopped off the pick up fish & chips, they were the worst we had ever had in our whole lives. The fish was borderline cooked and very shiny, stodgy batter that was thick, no crispiness whatsoever, and I felt sick trying to eat it. The fish batter was paler than the chips. We binned both meals. AVOID.

Took the dog out for a walk on Cambois beach. Tide out, a terrific place to let your dog run free. For lunch we had fish and chips at Shack @ the beach adjoining Charltons. The food was excellent, best fish and chips I have had for many a year. We were made very welcome, the dog was also welcomed and provided with a large dog biscuit free gratis. The Shack is quite rustic no airs and graces but it provides good food, VERY reasonably priced, and a friendly warm space after a winters walk on the beach. I would highly recommend a visit.

Lovely place. Fantastic staff, unfortunately the food was not so good.

Very friendly staff, prices reasonable, will be back to try the food and a game of pool.

Friendly and supportive staff. We got here with the intention to have lunch and was told the kitchen got burnt yesterday. I sympathize with them. But we were told that we can order fish n chips. Mehn! We ate and ate and was overly excited at the meal even though none of us finished their meal. I will eat their cod fish and chips over and over. We got two cods and several other dishes. We were five but ordered 6 different dishes and got 5. When we realized that the 6th was missing, we called one of the staff who apologized, got the meal after few minutes and told us not to pay for it. I wished I could give more. I highly recommended this place for their kind and helpful service and I will sure visit again. Thank you

We often come here with work with a gentleman we support with Autism & L D. Food is delicious. You may have to wait as it is cooked from scratch. Good prices, tasty food & good selection.Highly recommend this pub

Took my mother here for lunch today. The barman was very friendly and helpful. We both had Tuscan chicken and chips and it was delicious - best chips I've ever had. Had a good walk along the coast afterwards.

Called in for coffee, but stayed for Fish chips.

Considering we booked a table in advance I was disappointed to be told we had to wait as there was non available, eventually was given a table but no menu had to look around to find one. We ordered starters and main course then waited and waited until the starters appeared but NO CUTLERY I had to ask at the bar for some we then waited another age to have the dishes removed then another wait for the main course to arrive but guess what NO CUTLERY, then another wait to have the dishes removed and order some sweets after another long wait the sweets turned up and guess what NO CUTLERY once again a search for a member of staff to get some spoons. The food was good but the service!!!! Staff training seems to be lacking

Booked a table in advance for 5. When we arrived the staff looked totally lost when I said we had booked, there was no tables available so we waited until one became vacant once we sat down there was no menu to choose a meal eventually the waitress took our order for starters and mains after a long wait we were given the starters…NO CUTLERY had to find some at the bar. We then waited quite a long time for someone to remove the dishes and bring our main courses guess what NO CUTLERY again we had to wait for member of staff passing to ask. Once again a long wait before the table was cleared and was told to order the sweet course at the bar but after attempting that staff member came to the table to complete the order after another eternity the sweets arrived BUT guess what NO CUTLERY once again we had to find a member of staff to get some spoons by this time it was over one and a half hours after our booked time to receiving the sweet course The food was very nice, it’s the lack of service that needs addressing staff training would help

Generally sit in the courtyard outside with the dogs. Great enclosed area with plenty of seating. Food is great and very reasonable. Lush stop off after a good walk on the beach

We spent 2 days up at Cambois soaking up the sun and enjoying Charltons amazing fish and chips. Honestly the best chips you can find anywhere. Your iced coffee’s are pretty moreish too.

Popped in after a long walk along beach,which is beautiful, I had a cup of tea which was made with good teabags and I was able to have it as I enjoy ,strong and dark. My partner had a cold can we shared a large plate of chips and a roll each . Fresh home cut chunky chips ,yum they where to die for and very reasonably priced . Definitely recommend

Dog friendly and does a lovely puppachino for my beagle. Lovely well mannered girls serving, my partner ordered a nice sausage sandwich to share with the dog.

Amazing venue, adding to what is also a fantastic beach. Staff very friendly, fantastic pool table and the Fish and chips are up there with the best I've had.

Lovely meal, I had scampi and my partner had the steak & ale pie and the homemade chips were DELICIOUS! There was plenty other choices on the menu im looking forward to trying! Dog friendly, lovely staff! We both enjoyed the whole experience! Brilliant location, beautiful beach for the dog walk then straight in for some food! What's not to like!

Nice place done out well and food is good but it's to dog friendly! was in yesterday and literally counted 13 dogs in the place and personally I don't think you should allow dogs in restaurants, great places lose the dogs!

Been today for lunch ,always had good food ,but today was very poor I had beef sandwich and chips ,there was about 8 slices of beef in sandwich it was awfull all fatty and chewy I told staff but nothing off our bill won't be back for food

I waited here for 1 hour 20 minutes for take out meal when I got it the chips were cold and scrappy very disappointing overall

Young girl serving extremely helpful and polite- food freshly cooked -hot/tasty/good value for money ,lovely cups of tea.Toilets very clean also - rounded off our trip to the beach nicely- will definitely return .

Tremendous sausage buttys to be honest well worth the money and marvellous latte's to go with them ,the staff were so polite and service was exceptional be more than happy to return in the future

Visited for lunch on a bleak day - few customers. Interesting decor and good bar service. Clean loos! Food came slowly and was clearly fresh cooked. Excellent quality cod and chips. With a couple of non-alcoholic drinks about £23 for two of us. Right good value.

Had a really lovely meal, scampi portions were very generous the homemade chips were really tasty, good value and will be back to try their sunday lunch... my partner has mash with homemade steak pie, was delicious..great value and nice to have homemade food .... Definitely recommend

When in the area visiting its the go to pub for Sunday dinner , can't be beaten

My family and I visited today all the way from the west of Ireland (on a North of England trip). The venue was very easy the find and the welcome was very warm. The selection of beers and wines was excellent and the freshly prepared food was wonderful. I would highly recommend this place and thank you to Mr Charlton for being such a great host.

Following a walk on Cambios beach with friends we had lunch and coffee. Fish was massive and in a nice crunchy batter and the chips could feed two. Staff were friendly delivering everything to the table even the coffees.

I turned up at 7pm on a Friday night fir a date night to be told it stopped serving at 5.30pm.

We had drinks, chips and cookies. Chips were a nice big portion. Service was good.

Initially wanted a Sunday lunch but was told it was currently booked up but the fish and chip part was available. So we ordered fish and chips and what a disappointment the staff were friendly but the place was not very clean and poor table set up this includes the Sunday lunch part. The fish and chips were terrible I ordered haddock which was grey and just all batter which was rock hard and the chips very pale and greasy. Left most of the meal and was extremely disappointed. The place is dirty and very overrated although in a nice spot near the beach. Will certainly not call again.

What a change I often visited cambois took my little girl to the beach then popped into charltons fish and chips were old style out of this world can't remember when i had them like this last, then a take out coffee and my kid had ice cream and a walk on the beach made a perfect day 😀

A good place to call into for refreshments after coming off the beach.

Charlton's is always a firm favourite of mine and my husband's. Food is delicious and service is quick. We visited there for fish and chips on Thursday having not visited since the start of the pandemic and it's still great.

How fantastic to actually find a good old proper pub with great home cooked food and selection of drinks , staff very good lovely atmosphere looking straight out to the beach and to be owned by probably the most famous geordies son (Jackie charlton) we were in our element.good old British pub loved it.

Food is absolutely lovely, cooked to order so nice and fresh. Very reasonably priced. Will definitely be back

I am currently on holiday and whilst on holiday I looked up restaurants near me. The first to come up was called Charltons Bar and Restaurant. Getting there was simple enough because it was very close to my lodge. When we got there it was surprisingly quiet. We sat down to order and I ordered the classic burger. The staff were friendly and there was a pool table which I enjoyed playing on. When my food arrived it had within lettuce, tomato and cucumber which they admitted to mention came with the burger on their menu. This was easily fix able and once I had fixed it I enjoyed it very much. The chips were incredible and one of the best I have ever tasted. The burger was well cooked and very well proportioned. Very nice and would recommend to anyone.

Lovely little family pub tucked away. Lovely atmosphere and the food was amazing. Huge portions! Lovely pleasant staff. Prawn cocktail was massive, onions rings could have done with slightly longer as really pale, my poke in the eye was beautiful with half rice and chips and gorgeous fresh side salad, hubby had steak and mushroom pie with mash and peas. Bottle of wine and a pint of cider just £40.90 well spent.

Called in here for a quick coffee at the weekend and ended up buying homemade cakes and the best cheese scones in the world. The lunches looked fabulous too so we will be back to try them. They have added a chippy which we also want to try. Such friendly service and a great location, what's not to like?

Only been in the shack alongside Charlton pub. Just recently discovered the area. Lovely friendly manageress who served me coffee & ice-cream for my grandson. Fabulous walk along beach with small kids park nearby. Real quiet, clean little gem on Northumberland coast. How glad I am that we found this place. My dog goes crazy on cambois beach, he just loves it & so do I. So many friendly doggie people to speak to on our walk from river wansbeck to North blyth if the tide is out. The Shack do amazing fish & chips when you've worked up an appetite. We are now firm fans of Sunday lunch at Charltons. Very tasty choice of 4 meats with good portions of vegetables served by very friendly lasses. Tomato soup starter is fabulous as is pudding especially apple crumble pie. Highly recommended.

Always a peaceful place to have a pint, and the food is usually pretty good too. Staff are first class; friendly and welcoming.

Called in for a Coffee and Hot Chocolate whilst walking the dogs on the beach. Friendly helpful service great quality drinks (and cheese scone) and very welcoming and dog friendly. Will likely make this a regular calling in point when walking the Cockers in the area.

Go in this place every time i visit my daughter in cambois, usually 5 star but today i decided to take 2 of my grandchildren in for their tea and was told they were not takung food orders due to the cook being rushed off her feet with the xmas fayre orders so i looked around and there were 6 people sitting 😳 so 1 adults and 2 childrens meals would have been too much? It only takes once to put you off somewhere and i thought that was a bit of a joke to be fair. Sorry but your establishmenthas been 5 star up unto today. Shame

Great atmosphere with attentive, friendly staff. Food was great - good quality and excellent value for money. We took our dog and she was as welcome there as we were!

Went to the cafe part with my wife daughter and grandkids after a walk on the beach. We all had fish and chips to sit in . Food was first class , you could easily pay twice what they charged in a lot of places , could not fault it at all . The staff , two young ladies were lovely , great service and friendly and good with the children . What a gem .

Friendly warm and Welcoming, Just like Jackie was his personality shows through the owners and bar staff. If you've got time and fancy a great meal then pop along and you wont be disappointed.
