The Porterhouse in Winchester

This used to be a great steak restaurant, for some reason it’s not! Meat not great quality, no atmosphere and no one in! So disappointing

What a great experience, so much choice and all of it expertly cooked and presented. Having arrived with a mix of vegetarians, pescatarians, gluten free, lactose intolerant, alcohol intolerant friends and relatives for an 18th Birthday celebration, GG and his team ate up these sensitivities and produced an outstanding meal to remember. Everyone was delighted. Thank you.

Beautifully cooked food and attentive staff in a nice surrounding. We went for a pre show dinner and had a lovely meal. Thank you for a nice evening.

I only give 5 out of 5 when my expectations are exceeded, not just for nothing going wrong. I have a top 10 of steaks I have eaten in 25 years including some time with a corporate credit card and customers throughout the world and a lot of disappointments as I have chased my favourite foodnitem. The Porterhouse Steakhouse may not take the #1 slot on the list but it has definitely gone into the top 5. A lovely meal with perfectly prepared food, lovely steak, perfect chips all served by great attentive and engaging staff. Not only was this faultless but it exceeded my expectations, I will return. Final note, leave room for the cheese cake, you won't regret it.

We choose this restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary. we both had a lovely meal. Sorry but i cannot remember exactly what we had. The starter that we had were very good. I had a steak for the main and my wife had the Chicken which was a little on the dry side. We did not order a desert but the staff brought us over a surprize desert which was on a decorated plate and we really enjoyed it. The only dampner on the evening was the table of three youg women and one man. The women did nothing but laugh very loudly through most of our meal. People should realise when dining out to respect other people.

Great service, great staff, great food. Will be going again. This was for my grandsons birthday and acceptance into Winchester University

had a superb lunch here today for Father's Day. We enjoyed amazing seafood starters followed by perfectly cooked fillet steaks and then some delicious puddings. I dont know why this restaurant in Winchester isn't always packed out.

So very quiet when we went in but meant little or no wait for what was one of the tastiest steaks I have ever had. Absolutely fantastic meal and very friendly staff. Reasonable prices for the quality too. Not to be missed!

What more can I say……..great Friday night out with hubby while in Winchester. Lovely warm welcome, lovely table by the window. Really great food and although I’m not a massive fan of steak I went for the mixed grill with a mignon of delicious steak in it cooked to perfection. My hubby had a huge steak which he thoroughly enjoyed with gusto. I had salmon to start and hubby the scallops and both were fab dishes. The service was so friendly and spot on and we were almost the last to leave. Thank you for a lovely evening and we hope to visit again very soon.

We visited Porterhouse to celebrate my son 18th birthday. He loves steak so the decision was easy where to book. My son's feedback it was "the best steak I ever eaten". We all had a very enjoyable evening, the service and the atmosphere was above our expectation and we can be very critical. Is not first time for some of us to visit Porterhouse and I have to say, it never, ever disappoints. The owner is always present and very friendly, making sure it all goes well for his customers. Well done and I am looking forward to bring my son again without doubt. Thank you!

We were recommended here by friends. And we’re not disappointed. The food was fantastic and cooked exactly how we asked. The venue is clean and tidy, the waiters were very polite and well presented. I would say if the place had a revamp inside to modernise the seating area experience it would have been packed and we wouldn’t have got a table. Great great great

Absolutely incredible value lunch menu. £12.99 for 2 courses including a drink. The starters were all delicious and the ribeye steak was so tender and was perfectly cooked. Just over £50 for 3x 3 course meals including drinks in this day and age is a bargain, can’t believe they weren’t busier. Went twice in a week while staying in Winchester and will definitely return on my next trip here.

We booked for lunch on a saturday to break up the shopping. First time here having driven past for years. Great attentive service. Food was very fresh and cooked to perfection. The lunch menu is great but you can also choose from the main menu the waiter pointed out. Steak is gorgeously cooked, impossible to fault. Wine lovely. All in all a perfect lunch and would recommend.

They have a fantastic selection of well priced set menus in addition to the main menu. We have a 2 course meal with a glass of wine included for £12 per person. Food quality was excellent. Highly recommend

We visited for a special night out. I had emailed in advance to ask to reserve a certain steak from the excellent menu. They did this, and without asking decorates the table for us. The food was superb - really tasty and full of flavour. Through the meal the staff were lovely, and they even brought a free desert for our special night out.! We will definitely come back here as they really turned a meal into a night out - thank you!

I had booked for boxing day but when we arrived it was empty and I was considering leaving as an empty restaurant can be a sign of bad things, but the lovely waiter (named G) said another booking was due in and this is normal for boxing day so we stayed. The main menu didn't match their online menu, so again we nearly left, but G gave us the lunch menu and we are so pleased we stayed. Lovely portion of olives to start (much bigger than other restaurants), great burger, lovely rump steak cooked to perfection with delicious side salad and seasonal veg and top notch chips! Really pleased we stayed. Great price, lovely food and friendly , professional waiter.

Was hoping for more. Staff were friendly and service was ok. Steak was very well cooked but everything else unfortunately was just very average and not especially cheap. The dining room has also seen better days. Sorry…

We go here nearly every week as the food is superb it is good value and all the staff are amazing. we recently celebrated our 55th wedding anniversary and husbands birthday the staff made it really special for us. Thank you to Pradeep and his wonderful staff, back this week!!

We went for a birthday lunch, midweek. The restaurant was pretty empty, it’s a large air conditioned restaurant which was good on a hot day. Service was faultless, as was the food. They offered a couple of set menus as well as a le carte. We had smoked salmon and scallop starters, sirloin and rib eye for mains. We felt the prices were very reasonable. Well worth a visit.

My first time here today. We booked for a table for 7 to celebrate a friend’s birthday. We all went for the 4 course menu. I must say, from starters to desserts, it was amazing! My sirloin steak was perfectly cooked! Erin recommended Malbec with my steak which was just amazing! We will definitely be back! Thanks for making a birthday plate for my friend too. 🫶🫶🫶

Had the most amazing lunch here served by Mount. Great seafood starter followed by the 5oz fillet steak which was cooked to perfection and just enough for lunch time. Chef Bima came to our table to enquire if food was good which it was and also good value for money. Will definitely recommend and will be returning.

On walking in the decor is a little dated and bland but this is the only negative we could find, great service from walking in the door, a warm welcome and polite manner always starts well. Taken to our seat, we were advised of the menus and drinks list available. Offered to take our jackets and provision of water as we sat down. Advised of the GLUTEN FREE/COELIAC AVAILABILITY, plenty of choices and chef was happy to adapt to suit. The service was just as you'd want not too much but just enough to go that extra mile!! Food ordered and kept informed of any gluten potential risks. With a few adaptations, we sat and awaited our meal. Starters and mains with a bottle of wine to share. Food was incredible, cooked well and as requested.

Was only in Winchester one night and my husband found this restaurant online. The food was excellent. We didn't have starters - just as well as the main was delicious and very filling. Everything bar the potatoes with the roast veg was cooked to perfection. Service was friendly and unobtrusive so we were left to enjoy the food. No room for dessert, so I can't comment on that, though I'm sure it would have matched the standard of the entree. We'll go back if we're ever in the area again.

We had a wonderful pre theatre lunch here. We were offered a choice of table and were immediately offered iced water which was very welcome because it was a very warm day! We both chose scallops with lime and pomegranate to start with which were delicious, cooked to perfection. Then my husband had a rump steak and I had a sirloin. The meat was superb. We both like our steaks rare and these were cooked to perfection! To accompany we had chips and the vegetables of the day which were al dente, just as they should be. A couple of jugs of sauce, one peppercorn and the other blue cheese were also brought. Service was second to none. Our server was a charming girl who was attentive without being obtrusive. She had the foresight to warn us that the vinegar bottle tended to be a bit enthusiastic in its dispensing. Very welcome warning - how many of us have over doused our chips when a little sprinkle was what was intended? We were in Winchester for a matinee at The Theatre Royal next door and I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough!

Was an exceptional evening with my teenage son. From the greeting at the door, the amazing, attentive waiter and the incredible chefs. Fantastic steaks, son had rib eye and I had fillet. Would thoroughly recommend this restaurant.

Booked for 1815 and welcomed warmly by the manager and shown to our table. The waiter was exceptionally knowledgeable and friendly. Service was impeccable. We ordered a t bone steak ( rare) and a medium sirloin which was cooked perfectly. Steak tartare for a starter was amazing. The setting is intimate but by no means small. After checking out reviews for restaurants in southern Hampshire for a family lunch I decided on Porterhouse. Partly as my brother doesn’t do ‘fancy’ food. We arrived and the restaurant was empty. This was 1pm so maybe a little early and it was a Wednesday. The music was relaxing and a banner saying ‘happy birthday’ lay across the table. The host was most welcoming and friendly. My garlic and chilli prawn starter was delicious with large juicy prawns. The others went for mixed seafood which they enjoyed. My main was ribeye which was perfect. Mother decided on the sea bass which was generous. Father decided on rump as there’s no surcharge with this (although it was less than £4 for my 8oz ribeye) and my brother opted for a huge fillet. A enormous pile of chips arrived as did two jugs of homemade sauce: blue cheese and peppercorn. If we wanted more chips and sauces we were asked to let the staff know. To finish we chose chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce and bailey’s cheesecake. My father didn’t order a dessert, yet a cheesecake arrived with a candle on the house. Excellent and generous. We all thoroughly enjoyed all the courses, left full, staff were great and excellent value for money. This is a lunchtime offer anyone in Winchester would be foolish to miss out on!

Best steak we've had in years , the Chateau Briand was superb. Service is excellent too. Lovely friendly staff. We will be eating here again. Thoroughly recommended

Wow.....what a find . Went for a Mothers day meal with the family. It was perfect from start to finish. The food was fabulous..... The staff were fantastic.... The place was relaxed.... Great overall experience and as the daughter has recently moved to Winchester I know we will be coming here again.......and again. Thank you.

Dined here last night. 2 couples on pre Christmas break to Winchester.Scollop starter was the best any of us have tasted. Two porterhouse steaks, cooked medium and medium well. They were absolutely delicious, so tender and full of taste, and ' rested' and relaxed as a good chef knows to do . The 2 sauces were a delight. One diner had recently enjoyed a porterhouse steak at The Connaught London, and said these were just as easily as good.Refills of chips/ veg and sauces should we need.Well done to you all, the attentive, friendly front of house team and chefs, you gave us a top night.

We had the chateaubriand special for two on one rainy night in October. It was fantastic! The salad and grilled veggies were delicious. Medium rare steak was perfectly done to our liking. Reasonable prices and wine prices.

Staff were very friendly and extremely accommodating. Steaks were cooked perfectly and regular top ups of chips and sauces were offered at no extra charge.

Friendly, efficient, courteous service, genuine value for money, superb food. What more could one ask for? We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, which was washed down with a bottle of excellent South African Pinotage. We felt this restaurant was a real "find". We went for dinner and were extremely impressed with the food two of us had steaks and two of us had the lamb. The lamb diners declared it was the best they had ever tasted. The desserts were very good too.

We had a delicious meal in here, we both had steak. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the service, we had a very pleasant evening. We even considered going back the day after as we liked it that much.

Having not visited the restaurant for a while were delighted with a lovely evening and charming service from everyone in the restaurant.The steak is simply delicious, chargrilled to perfection and the side dishes and sauces were very tasty. The price is reasonable and you leave with a sense that you have had a treat and not been scorched by the price.

We found the Porterhouse restaurant to have a good vibe, friendly staff and a good quality of food. Well worth a visit and a good selection if you are in this part of town. Nothing negative report, apart from, maybe the steaks did come in rather large sizes (no 8oz steaks here!!)

The main menu is centred on steak of which there is an excellent selection. We had the Sea Bass from the 'Special Menu' which was first class. Both the two and three course specials provide good choice and excellent value.

Spoiled for choice, because all the steaks on offer here are all such good quality. I don’t think there is a better quality steak restaurant in Winchester than this. And the prices are very reasonable!

Visited for our anniversary meal after failing to book our preferred venue early enough. (I’ll be reminded of that for a while!)The restaurant is very bland inside. There’s no warmth or atmosphere to the interior and it all feels a bit cheap. However the staff were very welcoming and explained the menu. Drinks and food turned up promptly. Condiments were in plastic sachets which didn’t improve the impression. My ribeye was very nice, cooked as requested, full of flavour and piping hot. The chips were a bit of a miss and tasted and looked like standard freezer fare. Not the restaurants fault, but there was a very loud birthday party a few feet away which unfortunately didn’t really add to the ambience for us. A ribeye and a fillet with water to drink came to £70. We didn’t stay for dessert.

Came here for wife’s birthday. Great quality beef. And lovely table decorations for birthday plus a complementary dessert cake with birthday candle. A shame we don’t live as local as we would be back more often! Thanks for going the extra mile Porterhouse

We stumbled across The Porterhouse after scanning all the local food places, and what a find. The lunch time menu was very nice and so reasonable, with unbelievable service. All the staff were very friendly especially Alena who went the extra mile with us, ordering a taxi for us to get back to the hotel. Well done The Porterhouse.

Visited last Sunday evening. Couldn't fault the service. Attentive, friendly, & made you feel comfortable. Even encourage me to try the roe on the scallops ! Which I was pleasantly surprised with. We both had fillet steaks, medium. They were more medium rare. That isn't a big issue to us, but my husbands plate had quite a bit of blood floating around. Steaks shouldn't bleed on a plate if rested. But again wasn't a major issue just shouldn't happen in a steak house. The steaks in our opinion lacked seasoning & flavour & were actually quite tough for fillets. Hopefully just a one off. We would try it again as all places have off days. Just this time is wasn't anything special.

My wife and I went there for our first day away of our honeymoon. We were well looked after, lovely staff and phenomenal food...the chateaubriand was divine, we highly recommend to couples to share!

Both the waiters were great and the Porterhouse steak the best we have every had. Portuguese wine brilliant and we were introduced to a Cotswold Malt Whiskey ...we are hooked!!

A solid steakhouse but disappointing when compared to the big time ones in London, Chicago, Las Vegas, etc. I started with the steak tartare, which was nice but surprisingly not served with an egg or bread. For a main, I had what they referred to as Prime Rib. It was actually a grilled bone-in ribeye, not roasted Standing (or Prime) rib. A ribeye, though is a great cut and it was a fine steak though nothing special. I was disappointed in the asparagus, barely grilled and none of the truffle oil flavor that was promised. Overall, a solid steak but not a special meal.

My wife and I enjoyed a fantastic meal here over the Bank Holiday. The staff were pleasant, attentive and efficient. It has the feel of a well run establishment. The food was yummy with a great selection of steak meals. We had the Chateaubriand cooked rare which was really nice. Well worth a visit.

Always an incredible meal! We are so happy you’re open again.Every time we go to the porterhouse the food and service is exemplary! It’s also ridiculously good value for money! We had the scallops and prawns for starter, both cooked perfectly! Then the chateaubriand for main which comes with sides and a start, great value. I can not recommend The Porterhouse enough! It’s our favourite place to eat and I’m already looking forward to our next visit!

Our first indoor meal after lockdown. Tables well spaced and air conditioning with high ceiling.Special menu was great value with superb 5 oz fillet steak cooked very well. 8 oz Rib eye had great flavour. Comes with peppercorn and blue cheese sauces all at 18 95 with dessert and starter. Sauvignon white by glass very smooth and great value Service exceptionally attentive without intrusion. Great quality steaks 20 and 32 oz steaks also available! Highly recommended

This steak restaurant is absolutely amazing! The food is to die for... the service was excellent and was taken good care of! I definitely will be visiting again. We are from London and I must say this tops off any steak restaurants in London! Thank you so much

Well what can I say!. Our first anniversary as a married couple and it was incredible and well spent at Porterhouze. From the service to the wine serving, friendliness and knowledge of the staff.. It was all superb. Steak was cooked to perfection,those chips were something else!!.. Incredible baileys cheesecake with anniversary writing on it. Really good quality for the price and would definitely go again!

Fantastic lunch. We met as a family party of 5. We were well received and seated in the window which was very comfortable. The service was impeccable the starters were well presented and the steaks perfectly cooked. All of us were delighted and would certainly visit again

Great experience at Porterhouse. The host (manager?) was welcoming, fun and very knowledgable. We shared the Porterhouse steak for two which was incredible accompanied by a fantastic Chilean red. Quick service making the best out of the shortened hours of service at the moment.

We had a couple of very tasty starters and then a great steak, very tasty and cooked as requested. Good service and a nice atmosphere. Tables all distanced, staff in masks etc.

This is our go to place for steak. Always cooked to perfection. Baileys cheesecake is gorgeous. We always get a warm welcome, never rushed & well worth the journey for a great meal.

Would definitely recommend this place! The waiter (maître d) was really knowledgeable on the wine and origins of the meat. The meat was cooked to perfection and the chips were the perfect fluffy, crispy ratio! Mid range price but definitely worth it!!

My wife and I had a lovely dinner at The Porterhouse whilst we were staying in Winchester. Friendly welcome from the owner/manager, who accommodated us despite us arriving early. Superb sirloins, sides and an inexpensive bottle of red, coupled with good service, made for a really enjoyable evening. Highly recommended!

At the end of our staff in the New Forrest we visited this restaurant. The staff and the good were excellent. We left our rather expensive camera and returned home. Upon calling the restaurant they kindly packaged it up and returned to us special delivery at no charge! Absolute superstars. Many thanks.

Out of isolation today and our treat was a meal at porterhouse. Fabulous prawn starter and melt in the mouth sirloin steak. Absolutely perfect, thanks to the chef,manager and Alena.you made it a perfect return to the outside world.

The food was of an excellent standard and could not fault at all. My husband had steak and I had a vegetarian pasta and both were cooked to perfection with lots of flavour. The service was good and very friendly and the restaurant COVID safe. Would highly recommend

We booked this restaurant while on holiday and celebrating our anniversary. Used the online booking service which worked very well and received confirmation by email. During this time of covid protocols the restaurant was laid out well to give every diner ample room and the service staff were all wearing masks. We received attentive, yet not overbearing service and our meals arrived at good intervals and were nicely hot. The food was excellent. We shared a porterhouse steak, which we had sliced, accompanied by very tasty side dishes, so much so that we ordered more later and they too arrived quickly, without fuss and hot. My husband was particularly keen on the peppercorn sauce. Much to our surprise the staff brought us a lovely 'third' dessert with Happy Anniversary on it. A small, but lovely touch. We would return again without hesitation.

Excellent food and good service. Steak cooked perfectly, not many places get minimum rare spot on. Excellent well hung cuts of meat. Starters and sweets equally good. Today we Came for a late wedding anniversary meal here! The food was beautiful we ordered off the lunch time menu and it was perfect sizes and food we then ordered some puddings which were amazing too. The restaurant had put some little decorations on the table which was a lovely touch :) the waiters and manger were very polite always around but not pushy or hovering just a really lovely meal thank you! Having eaten here many times, this has never failed to disappoint at all. Everything is always perfect, and the food is just immensely tasty.Lovely range of wines and champagnes and always served to perfection.The lunch menu during the afternoon service is a great option if youre in town during the day and offers great value for money. Couldnt recommend this restaurante enough.

Went for a meal here on the first night of re-opening since lockdown. All social distancing and safer practice guidelines were adhered to. Staff were very helpful and attentive. Our steaks were cooked to perfection. All the food was well presented and beautifully cooked. It is nice to be able to see into the kitchen and serving counter - always gives you confidence in hygiene and quality. The table spacing made the restaurant feel a bit 'stark' but that isn't the restaurant's fault - just how things have to be right now.

We booked Poterhosue for a birhday celebration and received a warm welcome on arrival.Our server, Rohan was attentive throughout and most helpful.My 160z Rib eye was superb, cooked as requested medium rare, full of flavour and very soft.Overall we had a fabulous time, with fabulous service.Thank you Rohan and team and for the Happy Birthday Cheescake and candles.

I was walking around town when I stumbled upon the Porterhouse, was welcomed by who I believe was the manager, and wad quickly looked after by him. Absolutely delicious rib eye. I'm just sorry I don't live closer!

We booked a table for 7pm this Saturday evening for myself, my brother and the wives after attending the Sausage and Cider Festival. We were earlier than expected so my wife called up and asked if we could rebook for 6pm which was not a problem. When we arrived, we were greeted by extremely welcoming and polite staff who seated us and allowed is plenty of time to look through the menu and select our meal and drinks. 3 of us chose the Grilled Trio for main course which consisted of Flllet Mignon, chicken breast and lamb chop and I went for the Beek skewers. Due to my wofe having a shoulder injury, we asked if her dish could be cut up by the chef and I asked if my skewers could be made extra spicy, and this was greeted with no problem and they happily obliged. The food was delicious and the service was superb, and extra mention to Rohan who looked after us so well and is an absolute credit to the retaurant. We had a wonderful evening and will definately revisit when we are next in Winchester. If you like steak, this is the place to go in Winchester no question.

Having read the large number of positive reviews, we decided to give this place a try. We were not disappointed. We started with the shared mixed platter, and then the rib eye and t bone steak, all the food was good. Only minor criticism was the blandness of the blue cheese sauce. With a bottle of Syrah, the bill came to just over £100, which was reasonable value for money.

Very enjoyable meal on a quiet Monday evening. Service was very good, though being quiet it wouldn’t have been taxing. If something needs improvement, it’s the menus ... they’re just not quite up to the standard of service and food that they offer.

Went for the chateaubriand deal for 2 for £ 50. Asparagus,halloumi and salad to start was light and right for what was to come. My wife required steak cooked medium while I opted for medium rare. Due to the portion size of meat, 2 of the medium rare pieces were a little on the blue side but this issue was quickly rectified by chef/waitress. Excellent quality of meat. Sautéd potatoes and veg medley very good but the meat was the real star. I requested a sauce (not on menu ) which wasn’t a problem. Have paid £100 plus for this meal in London. Really impressed. We went for an early evening dinner so The Porterhouse was quiet but food , service and wine were top notch. Highly recommended.

The food here was amazing, and excellent value for money. We had the Christmas menu and at around £28 per head for 3 courses was great. The chips were outstanding and the steaks were cooked perfectly! I’m not sure why anyone would rate the sauces as average, they were all great and the staff went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed, without being pushy. Thank you very much for a great, well organised evening! We'll be back in the summer!

Went for the chateaubriand for 2 with the halloumi and asparagus starter special. Cost the best part of £50 and the starter comprised of a small slice of halloumi and 1 asparagus spear each, along with a few lettuce leaves. The steak was a nice piece of beef although well undercooked, we asked for medium-rare and it was bordering on blue. The chips and the garnishes and sauces just tasted cheap and detracted from the quality of the beef. Im happy to pay a bit more for a meal if you get the quality but it most definitely wasn't good value for money.

Was away with work and service was good and went for set menu as normal menu looked pricey. It was ok. Mixed starter good, main had steak which was nice and cheesecake nice. Did the job without the WOW factor.

The two course lunch menu with a glass of wine, beer or soft drink must be the best deal in Hampshire. The food was nicely presented and cooked. Service was friendly and attentive.

We had a great evening here for my partner’s birthday! The staff were extremely friendly and attentive. Not too attentive, though, just the right level.

Visited The Porterhouse for our anniversary meal. For starters we had the sharing platter which had king prawns, chicken & steak skewers and halloumi cheese which was delicious. For a main dish I had the prime rib steak and my wife had the rump steak. The prime rib was tasty but was well undercooked. I asked for medium rare but half the steak was extremely rare! I sent it back to be flashed. My wife’s rump steak was extremely over cooked! Not sure how a steakhouse cannot cook a steak to how you request it! The sides were delicious though. The extra touches and the cheese cake which was complimentary because of our anniversary was a very nice. Staff were very good and helpful but wouldn’t return
