We don't know this area very well but researched somewhere in the countryside and near Wantage as our daughter was picking up a car from there.Beautiful looking building and easy to park. Through a little outside alleyway led to a sheltered garden with large awning and up a few steps to the garden with lawn and tables. I tried the Abingdon ale - Loose Canon .....luuuuvily! Thankfully my daughter was running late so I had to be hospitable and try another pint which was equally as good. The Landlord/owner was very kind as we were a tad late ordering our food. The day boat haddock with hand cut double cooked chips was superb we ate everything plus we had a grilled bavette of beef. All in all a lovely time was had and we will return as the sound of the roasts are amazing.

A very enjoyable pub all round! Very nice large enclosed garden, which plenty of space. Beautiful building, which feels very at the heart of the village. Their own plough beer gave an extra special touch. The service was outstanding and the food was wonderful, very healthy portions of good quality food. A fun village vibe, but somewhere that it's perfect both to meet friends or take family. Really nice walks around as well and perfect distance from Wantage for a nice walk and Sunday lunch.

I booked a table Sunday lunchtime outside. We live in Wantage so decided to have a little lunch stop here. The experience as a whole was lovely. Staff very welcoming and attentive with a good selection of beers and ales- quite a few locally brewed. We had a roast and shared a sticky toffee pudding. Wow what can I say the food was amazing and I finished wanting to eat it all again- (not because I wasn’t full but just because it tasted so good). The pork melted in your mouth but also had very crispy crackling. The apple sauce was creamy and complimented it very well. It was also lovely to have the addition of beetroot and parsnip. I would highly recommend the plough and we will be back for sure on a Sunday and on another day to try other food on the menu. Make sure you book! Also felt very secure with good covid regulations.

Smallish village pub which has been modestly modernised and still retains a good village atmosphere. Although I have visited the Plough previously, this is not a pub I know well, but I understand it has had its problems in the recent past, so it is good to see that it is back on track again. There were three ales on offer at the time of my visit, all from smaller independent breweries, some local, but I opted for an excellent pint of Weetwood Oregon Pale (from Cheshire). From the fairly straightforward menu I chose the Pie of the Day, which was Chicken & Chorizo. This turned out to be an exceptionally well crafted pie, packed with meat and delicious, served with greens and chips and a jug of gravy; well worth the wait - service is friendly but not the quickest here.

A local community owned pub/restaurant which has struggled recently to have a consistent food service. Warming, real log fire and tasty food. Risotto of the day was beetroot, feta and candid walnut - a tasty combination. Special pud of the day, white chocolate brownie with strawberry ice-cream, was more of a cake with pieces of chocolate in it. As this is a small pub its unlikely to attract Christmas parties so good for a meal and catching up with friends.

Now the Plough is a proper community pub this is reflected in the very supportive attitude of the staff and an altogether better atmosphere. Food now in my view very commendable and well presented. Decor improved but quite a long way to go. Would not eat voluntarily in the restaurant (as opposed to the bar) as I am not keen on sitting in cramped railway carriages going nowhere. However I fully appreciate this is going to be addressed. Garden also in need of TLC but appreciate that not everything can be done at once. Keep up the good work. Oh and the beer is great and the whisky, gin and wine selection much improved

Visitors to the village, we went for a Saturday evening meal, having experienced the Plough under several of it's previous "managements". The service was really friendly and helpful and the food was excellent and good value. The restaurant lacked a bit of atmosphere but it improved as it filled up. The layout does not help and the decor is a bit utilitarian. It needs more pictures and a mirror above the fireplace to maximise the light imho. The "olde worlde" decor of the bar has also been replaced which is a pity. One other small point of improvement would turn the Plough from a great restaurant into a classy restaurant: the grammar and spelling on the menu! I found at least 14 howling spelling and punctuation errors - sorry, I used to be a fundraiser and had to write letters and application potentially for hundreds of thousands of pounds and my grammar and spelling could make the difference between a "yes" and a "no". Hence, my proof-reading antennae sometimes quiver uncontrollably, especially when rogue apostrophes are about!!! But it didn't spoil a great evening with great food.

Drove past the Plough as we were lost and decided to go in. From the outside, it's a beautiful looking building, but that's where the charm ended. We walked in to the pub where the staff seemed to find a million things to do rather than acknowledge our presence. Eventually we were served, but it really did feel like we were in the way. The "landlady seemed surprised when we asked for food, and didn't offer a menu. So we asked for one, and were presented with a grease spotted piece of paper. Which wasn't even the full menu, so we had to ask for that. We felt like we were an inconvenience, and nearly left, but appreciate that everyone can have off days, but frankly, I wish we hadn't. My husband tried "Phil's Famous Ribs" which were no different to what you'd find in a Hungry Horse. The chips were standard frozen fare, which could have benefited from at least another two minutes cooking. Hard in the middle, and decidely pale on the outside, it wasn't very impressive. I had the steak, which I requested rare. There was no blood, and it was erring on the side of medium to well. I did say to the server that the steak wasn't how I asked, but she said they were really busy in the kitchen and it could take "ages" to get another one. Everything was obscenely over seasoned. A heavy hand was apparent, if they are trying to make people spend more on drinks this s certainly one way to do it! When I mentioned this to the landlady she seemed unconcerned and said I wasn't the first to have said this. When we paid, they were unable to give us a proper receipt, and proffered a scribbled piece of paper. It was barely legible and our drinks were missing from the total. We queried this, but were told it was included in the total anyway. Far by the saddest part of this woeful experience is the fact that the pub has been bought over by the village as an asset to the community. Well, that community spirit was far from evident. Whatever the problems are, I don't know, but its not professional for the staff and locals to conduct a loud and expletive laden full scale debate where the cast aspersions over their colleagues from that same community. The Plough could be a fantastic place to go. The garden is lovely, and it has so much potential. The food was mediocre, the service terrible and the atmosphere was not one I'd want to return to. It's such a shame. We're visiting the Hanneys again soon to see family, but we certainly won't be returning to the Plough.

We just wandered into The Plough yesterday and received a kind, attentive, but not over-the-top welcome. The ambience was relaxed, there was no music to interrupt conversation, the décor and furniture were tasteful, service prompt, prices very reasonable, and the meal we had was wonderful. There are some interesting pictures on the wall, all with meaningful links to the village or to those who run The Plough. I particularly liked the photo of the elderly gent having a surprise meeting with Pope John Paul II. I asked all about it and the story was most interesting. That's the place we shall definitely go to again. It is also fairly easy for the elderly, having no steep steps etc.

It's less than a year since the village got together to save this community asset, and it seems to be working well. Even on a Tuesday evening early in January there were signs of life, and a friendly welcome from both locals and staff. The beer was excellent, with a range of real ales, and the menu was varied and well-priced - three courses for under £20, although you might decide to save money and skip the final course if you choose the amazing pork ribs, which won't leave room for it! We tried three main courses, and all were large portions of good pub grub; a whitebait starter and a tarte tatin complemented my steak. Worth going a country mile for ...

Popped in on the off chance one Sunday on the way through to Swindon in the hope of grabbing a late lunch. Phil, the landlord and Fi, the landlady were very accommodating as I had 3 small children to manage. The food was excellent and the whole meal experience was completely stress free. Wonderful pub and amazing food. Will definitely return.

Called in on a Thursday, a friend had recommended the pensioners deal. The pub is now community owned, and run by Phil and Fi. We were greeted by Fi who made us very welcome. We all ordered from the special menu two courses for £10 three for £12. We all had the same starter, but each person a different main. The starters were a good size served with warm bread. Our mains were all home made, good sized portions, great quality, and very tasty. The service was friendly and efficient. We will definitely call again, excellent value for money. Not sure about the choice of cask ales but they were served in good condition.

One of the difficult pub/restaurants to review. It is a "community free house " and we assumed all the staff were volunteers, so when they didn't know the table numbers, or forgot whether they had taken our orders, it was hard to criticise. The food was excellent once they had remembered we were there. The drinks however were extraordinarily expensive. 1 pt lager, 2 g&ts, 3 glasses of house wine and 2 Beck's Blue for des came to just under £40!

The Plough is under the ownership of a consortium of villagers from East Hanney & West Hanney and it shows. None of the big pub-co atmosphere. A party of 12 descended upon the newly opened restaurant for a weekday lunch. Pre-ordering was not required. The menu was comprehensive, with something for everyone. A sentence at the foot of the page encouraged diners to request bespoke meals. The service was very good, the food more so. Make sure you are hungry before arriving! Disregard any reviews dated before 10 July 2015, when the new tenants moved in. The interior of the pub has been extensively refurbished to a high standard yet retains the 'village pub' feel. The Plough is off to a great start, should it manage to proceed in the same vein, it will soon be difficult to get a table there.

A party of 10 of us ate here at very short notice on the new chef's first day in the refurbished kitchen. We were therfore prepared to make some allowances - but as it turned out, none were necessary. All the dishes were extremly well received, the service was friendly and helpful, and a good time was had by all. The building has a quaint thatched roof exterior with newly decorated contemporary-looking interior. If they can keep up this good standard and the maintain the prices, this pub should do very well.

Under new management, we ate here as a family. As locals, the last time we are here was a couple of years ago and to be honest the former owners lacked the welcoming service you expect from a village pub. Thankfully under new ownership the service is great. Welcoming without being overbearing. The food selection is good with typical pub food and roasts on a Sunday. The burgers are very good. Could do with being a bit bigger for the money but great tasting. The roasts are good value too (beef a little tough but tasty). All in all much better than it was under different management and hopefully the pub will stay open now. Will return.

Visited with friends for lunch (weekday). Chose the location because it was more or less equidistant travelling for all of us.Lovely warm sunny day - sat outside but seats were a bit rickety and we were sitting next to washing hung out to dry.The service was excellent, the food less so. At the end of the meal there was only instant coffee available; ‘the coffee machine is not working’.That sort of place really.

My husband and I visited the Plough yesterday for a late Sunday lunch, we arrived just after 3pm and asked if it was still possible to get food as the pub was quiet, just a few people in the bar area. We were told that would be fine and then given the standard menu and given the option of either beef or pork belly if we wanted the roast. The standard menu looked very tasty with prices ranging from around £10 -£15 for a main course. We both decided to go for a roast, my husband had the beef and i had the pork. we went through to the dining area and although its a little old fashioned its comfortable and we had the area to ourselves. Our meal was brought to us in good time and there was plenty of meat, potatoes and gravy on the plates, the vegetables came out in a separate bowl and again were plentiful. My pork was well cooked and tender and my husbands beef was also very nice and pink in places which a lot of restaurants seem to struggle with. My husband is quite picky when it comes to meat and I am delighted to say that he ate every last scrap of beef on his plate. all in all a very good meal at a reasonable price, 10 out of 10 for using local produce ( the meat comes form the Dews Meadow farm) we will definitely be coming back and bringing friends next time

My wife and I visited The Plough for Sunday lunch on 1st June. Having arrived without booking at around 1.00 o'clock, we were told as soon as we had ordered a drink that the kitchen was full with orders and there would be a wait before they would take more orders. Just 10 minutes later our order was taken and within another 10 minutes or so we were sat in the restaurant having a lovely pork Sunday lunch with great crackling and lovely fresh vegetables. A great selection of real ales was on offer and after a very filling roast, we sat out in the walled garden and enjoyed the afternoon sun... lovely.

My wife and I visited the Plough in West Hanney on Friday evening 14th March. We ordered the Goats Cheese Bruschetta with Salad to commence. Good portions and very good quality. For main course my wife chose the Butterfly lemon and garlic chicken and I chose the Lamb casserole type dish with vegetables. Both were excellent and my lamb consisted of delicious chunks of tender lamb. Then we had the Sticky Toffee dessert a very large portion with custard for a very reasonable £3-95p again very very good. All this washed down with an excellent bottle of Portuguese white wine specially imported by the owner. We will have no hesitation in returning to this excellent venue, to try some more of the many delicious looking items on offer from the comprehensive menu.

Our family have been trying several pubs in the area and this one got a 'Yes we would like to go back another time' which the others did not. The pub is old and largely unchanged since we were last there a few years ago. However it is a very friendly and charming place. We were really suprised by the quality of the cooking. We highly recommend the Butterfly Chicken in Lemon and Garlic in a cream sauce. The chef (possibly French?) came out to check that everything was all right and then explained what he had included in the dish to create the lovely taste. We followed this up with poached pears in ginger and port with a cinnamon crumble which was also extremley good. Our tip would be to choose dishes where the chef has a chance to show off his skills.

We eat here after looking a a few places to eat in the area. I had prawns in garlic to start and they were cooked to perfection not the usual overcooked prawns you normally get in a pub. The atmosphere was very friendlty and nothing was a problem. I had the mexican steak which was very nicely cooked. For pudding the sticky toffee pudding was a dream followed by a proper espresso coffee. I must try if your in the area.
