We had relatives visiting and decided on the Plough Inn. There was a really nice atmosphere in the pub. The food was really very nice, big portions. The staff were really friendly and helpful, the pub is also dog friendly always a plus. Thank you for a nice meal.

Small menu, but the food on offer looks varied so no problems there. I had a burger, that was amazing! Chips a little overcooked for my liking. Prices are very fair, for both food and drink. Dog friendly which is also great. Fully recommend this place

My first impression of the Pub was ok, no problem with customer service. I had booked a table for 2 for 1pm thinking it would be busy on a Saturday lunch time but in fact many of the tables were empty. We placed our food order and alarm bells went off in my head when after over half an our later we were still waiting for our order. When it did eventually arrive the presentation was ok. I had a Philly steak ciabatta but after sampling it I was very disappointed. What steak there was had been so over cooked that the meat was like chewing on a bullet with no taste and the cheese was an afterthought as it hadn’t melted at all. As for the ciabatta roll I would say it was days old as it was dry and fell apart. Very disappointing for a £10 roll. It’s a shame as the Pub has a prime position in Rottingdean but the food is far from prime in my opinion.

We went here today for Sunday roast. We had a table booked for 5pm and did arrive 5 mins or so late. On arrival it was quiet in there and we went to the bar. There were three young barmaids all chatting to a local couple. This was fine but after making eye contact with all of them and then two of them walking past us and back again to chat to the local couple again we were getting a bit fed up. Eventually I had to say excuse me to one of the barmaids and said we had a table booked for 5pm. All three of them looked at each other and spoke amongst themselves which at first made me think I’d booked the wrong place/date. The bar maid came back to say the table by the window was ours but she would have to clear it as some people had been sitting at it (by this time it was 5.10pm so not sure why it wasn’t ready and hadn’t been cleared). She gave us some menus to read at the bar but with two young children this wasn’t really possible. We were seated at around 5.15pm. At this point we were already disappointed as we have been regular customers of Hove Place and the Cricketers over the last 20 years on more than a weekly basis and a lot of the other Lion Group pubs. I know how picky the owners are and the standards they like their staff to uphold as I’ve seen them in Hove Place and the Cricketers and I do not think this is what they would want their customers to experience. We ordered a roast wellington amongst other things with some bread for my son but instead two roast dinners arrived at different times and my sons bread didn’t arrive. By this time a guy had arrived behind the bar and when he arrived with the second roast he said that the waitress had probably put through two roasts in error instead of the bread. We eventually got the bread. I think it’s a real shame that the bar staff aren’t up to the usual Lion Group standard and based on the experience we had today we wouldn’t return to this particular pub. Errors with the orders aren’t a big deal on their own but the thing we found most disappointing was being ignored when we arrived and it set the scene for the rest of the meal. All it would have taken is an acknowledgement from one of the staff members to say I’ll be with you shortly, and it would have been fine. It seemed that the staff were more interested in chatting than doing their jobs. We actually felt like a bit of an inconvenience to them. The food was nice, and I really enjoyed my roast dinner, but overall really disappointing and we wouldn’t recommend.

We never received our food order due to waiting so long!! We arrived at 6pm at our booked table & placed our order for food at 6.10pm. We were then left waiting & waiting! We asked the bar staff where our food was after 40 minutes of waiting and they told us it is on it’s way! We then waited a further 15 minutes before we decided to leave, as we had to get back home to let our babysitter go home. There was also a table of 8 people sat opposite us who we understand waited for over 1 hour to get their food! Surely the chef/bar staff would know how long the food would be and they could of advised that there was a long wait; it's not as if they knew we weren't coming as we had booked a table!! Shockingly poor service with no apology or offer to rectify our awful experience.

We had a brilliant baby shower in the pub function room which is a lovely room decked out with Christmas decorations and overlooking beautiful Rottingdean pond. The staff were so helpful in their communications with me running up to the event, it was really so helpful being provided all the menus in digital format prior to the event so that we could all pre order. Setting the plough apart from other function venues was the low deposit and ability to for each individual to pay for their pre order on arrival, this eliminated the usual stressful scramble to calculate the bill at the end of the meal. The pub also allowed us ample time to further decorate the function room for the baby shower. The food was delicious and generous in its portions. Thank you so much, I will certainly be booking functions here again in the future

Can’t comment on the food because we didn’t get any ! My partner just went to The Plough ( only because The Black Horse had discontinued food service ) for an evening meal. When we walked in we had to initiate the conversation with staff because the three of them behind the bar were too engrossed in their own. We were finally told, almost begrudgingly, that they were still serving food and we could sit wherever we wished. There was only one other table occupied. We chose our table, sat down and waited. A person who I assume was supposed to be a server, walked by the table a couple of times when she was not engaged in conversation with her colleague behind the counter. We waited several minutes to see whether she would acknowledge us, but, no, she did not. Unfortunately, this is not our first experience of this appalling servic at The Plough. We walked out, vowing never to return.

A year or two ago, we’d come to the plough on a weekly/fortnightly basis as you could always guarantee good food, good service, and good beer, and it would be our go-to place if we had mates from out of town staying with us for that exact reason. Food-wise, it is unbelievably hit and miss now, and as a whole the kitchens standards seem very low. The last three times we have been, food has often come out cold, ingredients missing, or is flat out over cooked, flavourless, and/or dry. If you are going to charge premium prices, you simply can’t afford to be inconsistent with what comes out of the kitchen. And when you mention it to staff, the response is very indifferent, as if it’s no big deal you’re giving them nearly £20(!!) for a burger, which was the case on our last visit. In fairness, they refunded some of the money, but having to complain and feeling like we’d handed over the worst £55 we’d ever spent, it ruined an evening we were looking forward to spending together, and a partial refund doesn’t make up for that. The little touches have gone as well. Not that it’s a huge deal, but sauces used to come in ramekins. Now you just get crusty, crushed up bottles of hellmans mayo brought to your table like a Wetherspoons. The prices either need to come down, or food has got to improve to make it worthwhile visiting again.

Most recently a burger order of “plant based redefined burger, bbq pulled beef and vegan sheese” came with a Pattie only. Not “pulled beef” no “sheese” for £17.95 - no prior warning, just offered a discount. I would have ordered something else if I’d known at that extortionate price for a frozen burger and frozen fries. We thought we’d try it again after a few months absence and it’s the same story. Sub-standard food for premium prices. £17.00 for a beer burger is obscene considering how dry it comes out. The first evening of our long awaited return to Rottingdean and our first instinct was to visit what we remembered as the best pub in the village. It was around 6:00pm and fairly quiet apart from two lads, obviously on their way home from work in their 'action man' gear, noisily clowning around on bar stools. As they played with a retractable measuring tape it was inevitable that an accident was imminent as one of them toppled a full pint over the bar and surroundings. Sadly, the tolerant bar staff, possibly a bit of flirting going on, allowed this to go on with little concern for the older couples who by now we're beginning to leave. Their tolerant attitude probably swayed by the fact that the lads are big spending regulars. We had also planned some big spending the rest of the week at the Plough but sadly a change of plans and did not return. Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android

The Plough Inn is a wonderful pub within the very pretty village of Rottingdean. The menu offered some great options something to cater for all tastebuds, with some superb classic dishes from fish pie, bangers and mash or fish and chips to mention a few. We opted for the later and really enjoyed the dishes we received. The prices were reasonable and the staff were very welcoming to all patrons and visitors passing through. There was a small bear garden, however the village lake is adjacent and locals were taking their drinks out and sitting around the lake enjoying the sunshine and local views. The venue itself is a beautifully rich with the warmth of the lovely wood panelling carefully paired with tasteful pictures a great local to enjoy a drink or visit for food. Either way, you won’t leave disappointed.

We (husband wife and 5 y.o) had a fantastic time here. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. I think their names were Christina and Izzy? Anyway, very nice. We had the fish and chips and it is honestly the tastiest I've ever had, even beats our favourite fish and chip shop. The fish was chunky and fleshy and very fresh. The home made tartare sauce was incredible, I don't usually eat it, but I had a whole small pot of it. The locals were very inviting and nice to talk to (thank you Frank). The location is great, adjacent to a delightful reasonably sized pond, complete with a variety of ducks/wild birds. Dogs are welcome in the pub too. Would highly recommend this to anyone in the area, or planning on a stop if passing through. Would certainly visit again.

A lovely ye olde style pub set near a nice duck pond on the outskirts of the village. Went in for a nice lunch time meal before a long drive. Staff were welcoming, smiling and helpful. I had a cheese ploughmans which was very cheesey with plenty of condiments and bread. Very delicious. Gravesite of the mega guitarist Gary Moore is nearby, so if you go see that come in here for a pint is my advice.

Lovely little pub positioned at the top end of Rottingdean. The decor is great and has a comfortable feeling about it. It also has a lovely pub garden. Great food menu choices. There is also a great selection of beers and wine. I can personally recommend the Sunday roast it was excellent. Service was excellent and attentive. Highly recommended.

Really lovely food. We ended up here after dog walk within the area and decided to stop for lunch. I had the Chicken burger with cheese and bacon and my partner had the Gnocchi. We were both very satisfied with our meals and the portion sizes were spot on! The service was brilliant and everyone was very attentive, the only thing I could fault is that the food took slightly longer than expected however other than that we had a lovely time. We will definitely be coming back with family in the near future! Date of visit 21/4/23

We were advised as we got in that we would need to wait around 40 mins to be served but we were okay with it and they acomodated us and our dog,the place is lovely. We ordered the gnocchi and I was really dissapointed, the gnocchi were swimming in oil so I couldn't eat it. Hope they change that dish, made the whole experience a bit bitter

Cosy pub with friendly, attentive staff serving excellent food. We ate here two midweek nights & was really impressed, only to be completely blown away by the outstanding Sunday roast. What a treat.

This is well run by the manager but the prices for drinks are ridiculous. £5.15 for a point of Harveys and £1, 80 for a packet of crisps!! This could have more locals as competitors in the village are at least 60p cheaper for a pint of Harveys and are sensible on the cost of crisps. Get it right - this is not central Brighton!!!

Booked a birthday Sunday lunch here for 8 of us for my Mum's 90th as staying in an Air B&B in Rottingdean. It was fine and the food was ok although we waited for an hour for our food. When we asked after 40 minutes if our lunch was en route the manageress told us there had been a problem with the oven. That happens and we were cool with it but they might have told us. The meals arrived in two batches so the first were not that hot once the roasts had arrived. I asked for medium beef and it was well done. This pub is quite expensive for what it is. London prices really. The manageress then apologised that we had waited so long for food ( we had arrived at 12.30 and were hoping to be out earlier than 2.30 to celebrate more with our Mum) and she offered us free dessert. We said no thanks as were going home for birthday cake. The first bill that came was not discounted at all and as we were about to pay they produced a second bill with my Mum's main course knocked off. It was ok and judging by other reviews we were just unlucky. It was just a shame it was for such a special occasion for us.

The best pub in the village by some way. Lovely cosy décor, an outside area overlooking the village pond. Good selection of ales and nice, reasonably priced pub food.

A lovely old pub with lots of character in beautiful Rottingdean and somewhere we were looking forward to visiting. Oh how disappointed we were. The service was awful, slow and inattentive and our cold starters took 40 minutes to arrive with no apology. The mains were nice but so obviously re cooked and/or reheated. Disappointing experience.

We just stumbled into this place. What a delight, lovely ambience with the fountain, superb service and gorgeous food. We had the Arancini, Seared King Prawn, Skinny Fries, Club Slaw, Sourdough & Pecan Pie. It was ALL just so nice. The service was superb from Megan, Grace, Charlie & Tom. Clearly assets to themselves and to the restaurant. Keep up the superb work and will DEFO be back when we come back to Brighton. Thanks so much Andy & Joanie

Having visited today my wife and I had the all day breakfast.the food and service was good however ,hygiene was extremely poor tables and chairs still had crumbs and. It’s if food is n them nobody wiped tables after clearing plates . I noticed 8-10 flys flying around and walking on the ceiling. This only comes from poor hygiene. I asked to speak to owner or manager and was advised no one here today. Perhaps this is why today there was no hygiene. Won’t be eating here again. Sorry to say this but I speak the truth and explained it all to the waiter on the day.

Good but quite pricey. But it's a bit classier than other pubs so nice if you aren't drinking and just want to relax with a friend.
