Good allround experience of this community pub,nothing was too much trouble,will go again.

Visited the Ancient Mariner for their kitchen relaunch last night and was lucky enough to try tasters from across their menu. Highlights included the ox cheek macaronade, fish pie, vegan steak, raspberry profiteroles and a MINDBLOWING mushroom and blue cheese croquette. Food was excellent, and the 3 piece jazz band made for a buzzing atmosphere on a weeknight. This was my second visit in as many weeks and there are loads more great looking events (sea shanties, folk nights etc) I want to return for. Handy that its right next to the train station to get home after! Would highly recommend and will be back again soon no doubt.

Had a fantastic meal at the Ancient Mariner. The fish pie and vegan steak were both excellent, and the atmosphere on a weeknight was really cosy. Went with two friends for an impromptu Sunday roast. By far the best roast I’ve had outside of home cooked. Well done for your first Sunday of doing them. The staff were really helpful. Definitely be back.

We celebrated our first residential party this Friday at the Mariner and it was a huge success! Thank you so much for the awesome staff that was working that night to make our party so wonderful! We’ll come back again!

This is a really terrific neighbourhood pub, with lovely staff and a welcoming interior. Plenty of outdoor seating for sunny evenings, too ☀️ I’ve been here occasionally just for a pint (they have a really good selection of beer!) but most recently for a Sunday Roast. The food was fantastic - the bacon wrapped stuffing that came with the chicken was sooo tasty, and the staff gladly brought out extra gravy to help us tackle the enormous yorkshire puddings! Loved the generous wedge of hispi cabbage, too. The Ancient Mariner hosts many activities throughout the week, from sea shanty evenings, to pints ‘n’ pottery, to live jazz. Looking forward to checking them out in the near future! ✨

Relaxed local pub offering a good selection of drinks and activities

Stayed at an Airbb nearby and used this pub every day. Such a lovely tucked away hostelry away from madding crowds and no traffic. Nice beer range with way above the norm vegan friendly beers all clearly marked. No food apart from pizzas and again lots of vegan options. Friendly service and customers, wish I lived near this one

We enjoyed our stay at ancient mariner, the staff were very friendly and helpful , the accommodation was lovely ,clean and spacious , our dog was happy and contented , food was excellent and plenty of it ,would recommend highly.

The food itself was tasty however the size of the roasts were like children’s portions! A few measly roast potatoes and a spoonful of veg. I expect more for the price, a bit extra would’ve made all the difference

Nice place chicken burger, really nice bud absolutely distraught in this day and age they wouldend accept scottish money Thank you for your reply I sympathise with any business that gets caught out with fake notes .but putting measures in place such as florescent pens and note scanners could go a long way to prevent this. On a second note, your bar person never mentioned anything about fake notes. She said that your bank didn't accept scotish notes .

A beautiful pub with very friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Delicious, high quality food and great music make this place very enjoyable. Definitely will go again.

I really like this pub. The staff are friendly and they welcome all ages. I was there with my 3 year old granddaughter and her parents. We ordered the rosst which was really nice with loads of different veg. My only criticism is it was way too salty for me. But the vege pie was very tasty

It was Mother’s Day and I knew it was going to be difficult, I could not have been more wrong ! Warm and happy staff and the most fantastic roast too . Please don’t go you’ll ruin it .

Decent beer, atmosphere and food - ticks all the boxes!

I was truly impressed by the quality of our meal. We had breaded plaice. sea greens and potatoes, a deceptively simple meal that was packed with flavour. There was plenty of it too. All for £14.

Came for Sunday roast with family, the food was amazing (my dad's hard to impress and said he'd eat it everyday). It was a lovely atmosphere, quick service and from looking at the posters around they have all kinds of entertainment including pottery, karaoke, and sea shantys - so I will definitely come back to enjoy those. Thank you!

First time visit. Won’t be the last. Excellent road, the cauli cheese was a trooper, the spuds a little hard to crack but I don’t actually mind them. Could have done with some more veggies but overall probably one of the best roasts I’ve had in Brighton.

Great Sunday roast, big portion, lots of vegetables , tasty and plenty of gravy - a bit salty but it combined all the different flavours beautifully. Great atmosphere and plenty to choose from drinks menu!

It's a bit tucked away, but worth the visit. great value for money, the spirits selection is incredible,it's a friendly warm welcoming atmosphere, and there are loads of activities (pottery and a pint anyone?). Would be my local if I lived nearer....

If you haven’t tried this spot for a Sunday roast idk what to say other than get yourself down there!! 📸 •slow cooked beef, £18 •crispy pork belly, £17 •basque cheesecake w stewed apple brown butter, £6 (must try this dessert!) FYI: Best Yorkshire pudding I’ve ever had Veggie options available

Absolutely great roast! The pork was beautiful and really enjoyed all of it. Wasn’t quite so keen on dessert but just the wrong choice. Will definitely return

Outstanding new menu on offer from the team at Med Restaurant in Brighton. Delicious food, varied menu with decent portion sizes at a very reasonable price. Sunday roasts are delicious too. Highly recommend!

Super cozy pub with amazing staff, drinks and food! Dog friendly! 🐶😊

Delicious, tasty and fresh food at really reasonable prices. We visited on a Tuesday evening and had vegan focaccia with olive oil and hummus (as the chef had not prepared the vegan butter, so we were better off for it!), padron peppers, plus fried aubergine in hoisin sauce with spring onions and vegan gnocchi which were good sized portions for small plates. The staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly. The pub has great outside seating booths. The interior is warm, clean and spacious. They have a wide selection of ales that are labelled so, as a vegan, I can see which ones are suitable for me. We really enjoyed our impromptu evening out and are looking forward to going back.

Visited today after wanting to try the new menu for a while and living close in poets corner. How lucky we are to have a place like this on our doorstep! The staff are all so friendly and helpful, the atmosphere and decor is cosy and the food was DELICIOUS and so reasonably priced for the quality. 100% would recommend and will be coming back! Well done guys :)

Have always been a great fan of this pub. But just had their new Sunday roast and was absolutely blown away. Best Sunday roast I have had for a very very long time. I wholeheartedly recommend. Kudos to team

Nice location, bright and open with helpful staff. Food is Thai themed and was OK but what I had tasted as if it was made with a supermarket bought paste rather than freshly made in the kitchen but it was ok and for that I'll score less for food. Prices though are very reasonable and being a pub there's no shortage of options from bers and wines through o all of the stronger alternatives.

Nice pub, lovely decor. But utterly ridiculous prices. £7.65 for a pint of gamma Ray pale ale, not acceptable. That's more than London prices. Other beers were still £7.00. Other local pubs (Westbourne) were £5.80 a pint. I'm sorry but you have out priced yourself. Won't be coming back. What a shame because the pub is nice, the service was nice.

We came for the sea shanty night which was very fun however there was a very drunk man who started to ruin the whole evening and the staff were pretty slow to kick him out (to be fair, I would have been scared to approach him too!) It really put a downer on a fun night and I felt very bad for the guy leading the shanty's. We felt very on edge that a fight was about to kick off at any moment. Would definitely go back but think there should perhaps be security on busier nights like that!

Great place for the Irish Music session on the first Thursday of each month. Good selection of drinks and a very lively audience judging by last night!

Thai food is very good I love pad Thai.

Pretty cool neighborhood spot. Friendly staff. Food was very good! I asked if the ribs were tender, and was answered yes but they were fall off the bone delicious! My husband had the duck, a very unique way of serving it and it was also delicious. Also enjoyed live music.

Last month I popped into this pub in between viewing houses in Poets. Drinks only, hence why no food rating. What a lovely space 💗. Was served by Matt and Brendan (what fab staff 🌟) who went above and beyond to make us feel very welcome. Once we find our house, The Ancient Mariner will certainly be our favoured local. Can't wait to try the food - looks delish!

Highly recommend the ancient mariner, good outside space, wheelchair friendly, decent selection of beers with a few jazzy options as well. Surrounded by a few other decent pubs this one has to be right up there.

Lunch time food with family. Pub was quiet but pleasant service. The Thai curries were quite good. A decent portion served with rice - but a side salad is not the best fit! Maybe a few popadoms or pickle? Starter snacks were not so good. Tiny spring rolls and lack lustre dumplings. Reasonable value all round. Could be much better.

It's been wonderful to see this pub brought back to life over the past few months. Lovely atmosphere, new events and live music, plus a quality Thai kitchen menu at good value too. I remember this as one of my favourite Hove pubs when I first moved here many years ago and it's a real gem of the neighborhood once more. Thanks crew xxx

New management seem nice. Some of the basics are missing eg not enough kitchen or bar staff (especially on a Friday night /St. Patrick’s) also basic bar etiquette like serving people in order! A working door on the ladies would also be great! Delicious food (when it finally arrived) Great selection of drinks and fantastic seating/atmosphere. 2 more staff would have fixed most of the issues.

One of my fav Hove pubs. Visited again last night ate delicious Thai food and had a warm welcome from the new landlords. They also have a Real fire.

Hi hopes new management will clear out all the coke dealing scaffolders and turn this into a family pub.

Come here every Thursday for the retro gaming night, it's brilliant! 12 retro consoles and literally thousands of games to choose from, and the staff are so helpful and so knowledgeable and passionate about gaming. Attracts a really lovely and friendly crows, and a great opportunity to meet gamers in the local area. 10/10!!!

Great Thai lunch - green curry was excellent in particular. Very attentive staff too.

A really quaint pub inside. Feels cosy, especially in the cold weather. Serves great food. Not tasted anything particular from their menu, so can't review on that & prices. Have a lovely outside space, around the front & one side, with a covering over the top part, & heaters too, I believe, from memory 😁🤔

Thai food was bland, underseasoned and lacking any spice. Served luke warm on cold plates in a cold room. If this is a new menu you are not trying hard enough.

We love this pub and is great for all ocaasions. We just held my partner's 40th birthday party here on Saturday and had a fantastic night. The manager was so helpful and we had music and food. Great night had by all!

Hired out an area of the pub for a private function and genuinely couldn’t recommend it more, the staff literally accommodated everything (lighting, music, the layout of the tables) and actively checked in with us throughout the evening to make sure everything was going okay. I had even left it fairly last minute to organise and they were absolutely fine with it. Can’t say a bad word. I would 100% recommend for a private function (and would deffo do so myself again!!) 😀

I haven’t visited the Ancient Mariner for a while - and was really pleasantly surprised when I went back for lunch yesterday. They have Lime Street Food in residence - Thai food, and it was absolutely delicious! The staff were great as well and the pub is dog friendly which is an added bonus - please support local, especially at this time.

Great pub. They always have my phone safe and sound the next morning when it has a sleepover.

I booked a table here a couple of days before Friday for myself and wife as like every week and just as we were leaving home my wife said '' have you read the revues on this place they are dreadful " so as id booked we decided to make our minds up and give it a try.As we entered the Pub we were greeted with a lovely smiling barman with our two dogs in tow he said " evening yes we have you table waiting for you" by now my face had instantly lifted thinking this might be Good. We ordered drinks ( they have a very good selection ) they arrived whilst we were looking at the menu and choose to go for the Thai selection of mixed starters followed by a green curry and a red curry each. I hasten to add there were around 20 other customers so it was very buzzy atmosphere whilst we were chatting about what the food was going to be like a Oriental gentleman appeared in a very colourful Chefs uniform and ask would we like rice with our order as we hadn't order any by now we were taken by surprise as this was not expected at all. Around 15 mins later the food arrived and wow! colourful vibrant and hot and plenty, What's more it was flavourful so hence very clean plates as we loved it very much, I would revisit this pub to experience the care and quality of the food without an expensive restaurant . by the way our evening was less than £70 all in. so give it try.

Mixed reviews here about the food and service, but in our weekday evening visit all went well. The pub has heated outdoor booths, and is spacious inside with a large dining area. The new Thai menu is very good, and all of the dishes we experienced were as good as any restaurant in town.

maybe time to rethink? greediness is not good. Your £14 sausages and chicken wings are really taking it far. even though hungry and even though i could pay it I won't, out of SELF-RESPECT. Hope you can see my point. Then Ill happily spend , on food and a drink. As of now. no custom, no chance.

Shame - hungry i stumble in, in the afternooon , in hope i can chill , do some stuff i need to do and eat. Lots of shockingly cheekily priced food. Described elegantly on paper to make it sound a bit posh. Sausages Of the week and mash £14 Chicken wings with 'selection of dips' £14 ( really? come on!... haha They SHould be so lucky ... I did not stay for drinks or for food. Simply Out of self-respect, - why would I ? when i can have a lunch-time two course Thai meal for £9 at the Wick Inn or the other Thai on Chrch Rd , Or two course for a tenner at several others, or the Italian opposite the Mash Tun at two courses for for 12? I ended up at Shayan having persian for a tenner. I refuse to line anyone's pockets. Will not be spending money there.

A lovely visit to the Ancient Mariner once again. Hospitality and food all first class. Staff were amazing and very attentive. Can never fault them at all. Will definitely return

Ordered burgers and a chicken wrap. The burgers had the relish, lettuce and gherkin all missing. Completely overcooked, as were the chips. ‘Homemade slaw’ was a few cut up pieces of onion and pepper with no dressing. The chicken wrap was just as bad, with two tiny pieces of chicken and some torn up cheese. Drinks were warm and when we mentioned the issues with the food, the manager was clearly just annoyed we had a problem. Nobody checked on us at all and we had to move our dirty plates to another table once we had finished what was actually edible on our plates. Honesty one of the worst meals we have ever had. It has seriously gone downhill.

Our waitress was nice but none of the food we had was. Chicken wings were pale and unappetising, did not look properly cooked, despite apparently being in the oven for 90 minutes. Fish and chips not much better. No smoking and vaping signs ignored in the outdoor area. Won't be back.

After church got invited here for a Sunday roast lunch. Very impressed with the facility and very friendly and welcoming staff. The food was excellent, pork belly is to die for. Will be coming back to this absolutely awesome pub. Highly recommend 👌🏻

This has been one of my favourite pubs for a long time & I have a few tops ones in Brighton & Hove after growing up here, then moving back. However this is by far top of the list! You really need to pop along and try it if you haven’t already. Why do I love it? Well - the staff are welcoming, so friendly & professional, the atmosphere is really great & lastly, but most importantly as I am a foodie the food is so yummy.Best burger & chips around! Kevin ( the manager) is a complete asset & always looks after myself personally if I pop in there & the charity I work for ( for a work function) I recommend this place to anyone unreservedly :)

We had Sunday lunch here last weekend. Lamb, beef and pork. We all enjoyed our meals. The lamb and beef were deliciously tender and the pork belly was excellent. The veg and Yorkshires were good. The only criticism I would make is that the roast potatoes were on the large side and not very crispy. Smaller and crispier is the way to go!!

Loved it, thankyou! Gorgeous roast, friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere. I reckon the outside booths would benefit from some fairy lights 😄 but in my opinion no other room for improvement! The heaters worked very well, perfect place to go if anyone is a bit vulnerable to covid because all the booths separated

Fabulous place. Went to watch rugby and ate there. Food great and staff can't do enough so cheerful.

Had a great roast at my local last Sunday. Friendly, efficient service, our meals arrived quickly and were decent portions. Didn't stay for dessert sadly! Next time.

Having lived in Montgomery Street and thinking of the Ancient Mariner as my local for a while, I was so disappointed today with who I believe was the manager and his dreadful attitude, treating my friend & I as if we were unwelcome vermin and then serving us one of the worst Sunday roasts I've had in ages, cleverly disguised with good presentation but the quality of the ingredients was questionable, the potatoes so overcooked they were impenetrable, overcooked veg that had turned to mush, beef that couldn't be cut and pork that although quite fatty, if cooked properly would have made nice crackling. Don't waste your money here folks, doubly embarrassing for me because it was a friend that was treating me to lunch, I'll be sure to return the favour and her money.

Local pub and been there many times but recently the service and food quality has deteriorated considerably Food was bland, burgers not cooked properly and gravy with the pie was terrible. The mash was dry and pie not great .

Service and staff were great but I ordered “loaded fries” with bacon & cheese and it was a pretty small load for £8. Just a tiny bit of sauce and probably one rasher of bacon. Load those fries up a bit more next time please!!

Inadequate, stressed, inexperienced staff. Food was basic, couple of dishes came out stone cold. Management were rude , obviously very stressed out but totally unprofessional. Won’t be going back and will be telling others not to bother

Had a burger and fries here in the outdoor seating area. Good food but the coleslaw was just chopped red cabbage. Burger and fries were great. Outdoor seating area is sectioned off between the tables and has heating which was amazing. There's only one toilet (for women) so if the pubs packed you could be waiting a while.

Good food, excellent staff and reasonable prices

Kevin and his team really looked after us for our Christmas party. No room hire cost, food was reasonably priced and was one of the highlights of the night. A great selection and tasted amazing. Have been before and will definately be back again. It...
