A lovely Sunday lunch with the extended family. Most of us the Sunday roast (a mix of standard, kids, and smaller portions) - all were lovely! Such lovely big portions, and we all polished them off! It’s so nice to see this place open again, and we will defiantly be back. A nice relaxed country pub atmosphere. Thanks all - big shout out to Chef Phil who me met on the day… 🙌

From customer service to the food, it was sadly lacking in every respect and very disappointing. The meat was incredibly tough (likened to old leather by one of our group), the Yorkshire's were burnt and I was embarrassed to have invited people to join us for what was expected to be an enjoyable Sunday lunch - I should have read recent reviews before booking! If JJ's 'saved this traditional pub' then it needs saving from itself.

Driving past this pub yesterday and decided to call in for lunch. The best choice I've made. Myself and 2 friends had a lovely time. The staff were warm and welcoming and the service was great, they couldn't do enough for us. The food outstanding. I had a steak and ale pie and it was so tasty. My friend is gluten free and there was a great choice for her, she went for the GF pie and said it was delicious. My other friend had the lasagne, you tell it was all home made and looked great. Will definitely be back, nice to see a good traditional pub open and serving great food!

This is such a great looking pub and just down the road from where we were staying for the week in Allerthorpe. We had drinks outside the first evening we arrived and thought it was brilliant to have found somewhere like this. So we were very much looking forward to dinner there the following day. I am so sad to say it was not very good. In fairness, my husband has no complaints about his mushroom stroganoff. I had the vegetarian lasagne. It was a slice rather than the usual individual dish and lacked the usual melted cheese topping. I can only guess it had been reheated as it was dry and a corner chunk was hard and inedible. The worst thing, though, was the coleslaw. I just could not eat it. I can only think it was a vegan coleslaw (the meal was advertised as vegetarian) made with a not very nice mayonnaise. Helllmans makes a really nice plant based mayo - it could be served to non-vegetarians and they would never know. Shame, too, that the chips weren't the home made variety you often get in pubs. Sticky toffee pudding with ice-cream / custard was fine. Staff were polite and friendly. We went back to the pub during the week to have a drink outside but not to eat.

Pleasantly surprised to find this lovely pub open on a Monday evening (apparently during the school holidays) Camping for 2 night with 6yr and 2yr old grandsons and fancied a meal out. Accommodated easily - dietary requirements met with no problem at all. Improvised corn on the cob skewers given to help the children eat them. The steak pie was superb according to hubby and my scampi was lovely. The boy's food was just right and all eaten - the chicken strips proved a winner with 2yr old dairy/soya intolerant. They shared a vegan ice-cream. Special mention goes to hostess Cerys who was so helpful - and had a lovely personality. Also to chef Kirsty - the fact that she personally came out with list of food ingredients was really appreciated. If we are ever in the area again we will certainly revisit.

Happened upon this place by mistake after overshooting our turn. Turned out to be a stroke of genius as we landed upon a proper find. Food was excellent, home cooked not run of the mill stuff and enjoyed a good pint in a great atmosphere. Here for a few days and will almost certainly be back. Landlord went down well with the other half as his impeccable manner was a refreshing change. Brilliant and highly recommended.

Honestly the best meal out we've had in years. Booked for a family birthday meal and requested a dining pod. Perfect for allowing the kids to enjoy themselves without worrying about keeping them on their seats! The owner is fantastic, friendly, upbeat and full of energy, but not overbearing. He strikes the perfect hosting balance! The waiting staff were lovely, very attentive and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The food was superb. Obviously quality ingredients expertly cooked with very generous portions. Not the cheapest but certainly not overpriced and, bearing in mind the quality of the food and service, I would say excellent value for money. Will definitely be back again soon and I cannot recommend this place enough.

I can thoroughly recommend the hot beef ciabatta and chips....i added a gravy which was really tasty. Very good value for money especially when compared to nearby pubs. The small fish and chips are actually bigger than most large fish and chips ive seen. So that would be my next choice haha. All in all thoroughly recommend, hoping to return soon. Five of us stopped here for Sunday lunch really disappointed, everything looked and tasted as if it had been served up hours before and reheated, can’t believe it was £16 per head for something that had been microwaved. Yorkshire puddings just shattered when cut into, roasties were hard and cold, cabbage a strange pale purple colour and tasted of nothing and the three different meats all had a strange colour about them. Definitely the worst Sunday lunch we have ever had in a pub.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I visited The Plough Inn with a group of friends whilst staying nearby in Allerthorpe. We had booked a table for Sunday lunch and were really looking forward to a hearty pub lunch that afternoon. We arrived and the pub was very busy (which is always a good sign), but it later transpired that this establishment was only so busy as it’s number one of only TWO restaurants in Allerthorpe. However, I’d have been better off getting some chicken and gravy from the KFC down the road at the service station, because at least that would be edible, well seasoned, succulent and better value for money. We all chose something from the mains section on the Sunday lunch menu. I got the hot roast meat sandwich and opted for gammon, which, having originally asked for beef, I was sensible to question how it was cooked, to which the waitress stated “well done” and boy, she was not wrong. Most of the table opted for a roast beef dinner, which was accompanied with mashed potato, roast potatoes, vegetables, cauliflower cheese, homemade Yorkshire pudding, stuffing and gravy. I’m glad the Yorkshire pudding was home made, representing Yorkshire as this pub should, however, that was certainly the only item of food which care had been taken to make as everything else was borderline inedible. Starting with the beef, this was described as “well done”, there was nothing well about the beef, perhaps there was when it was cooked and prepared about 4 days prior to serving it, but the meat was cold, dry and tough, even the poor gravy couldn’t save it. It definitely gave off the vibes of an old leather boot. The vegetables, whilst they were your classic carrots, peas, broccoli and cabbage, the cabbage was the most peculiar shade of purple and the rest of the vegetables tasted as though they had been dipped in some boiling water for “good measure” rather than actually boiling or steaming them so they were no longer raw. The mashed potato, this resembled something from a dinner previously served in primary school - most likely prepared with Smash (instant mash powder) as the consistency was exactly the same, lumpy, bland & bright yellow in colour. The stuffing, again this resembled a fat ball that you usually put out for the birds in the garden - dry and unappealing. The roast potatoes were questionable, most definitely frozen as they were, again, bland and dry. Even with a splash of gravy, cutting in to them was a task. Two of our party opted for the “Yorkshire Pudding Tacos” this seemed different and unusual but worth a try. Again, they shouldn’t have bothered. Three yorkshire puddings, with a slab of the toughest beef in Allerthorpe served on top, with coleslaw, gravy and roast potatoes. There’s nothing much to say about this dish, other than it’s probably not worth trying to be “different” as this dish did not work and it does not take a genius to understand coleslaw does not go well with gravy. Two bites into our meal, we were asked how everything was. We all responded “fine thanks” or something similar. Whilst it wasn’t aesthetically pleasing, we were hoping that the taste would get better as we tucked into it more and more. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case and meals went uneaten before one of the party took herself to the bar area to speak with a member of staff about how disappointed we were with the quality of the food, especially for the price we would soon have to pay, despite leaving over half of the plate full. Rude and unapproachable would be the best way to describe the waitress she spoke to. Apparently, us being courteous and stating that the meals were fine when asked, did not give us rise to complain thereafter. Comments from her such as “sorry it was not up to your standards” were absolutely uncalled for. We came to a pub in the local village we were staying in, not a Michelin star pub or anything spectacular. The least we expected was an edible, warm, homely meal. For £16 (which was the cost of one of the meals) I could have made a roast for the full table which would have been better quality, and I am not much of a chef but it really isn’t that hard to execute a proper roast dinner. As a way of “resolving” the matter, we were offered 10% off our bill, which equated to around £13.00. That did not even cover the cost of one roast dinner. But nevertheless, we accepted it as we just wanted to pay our bill and leave. We were hoping to stay for a dessert, however we did not bother, given the quality of the main meal. There were certainly no compliments to the chef on this occasion, nor will there be on any other occasion as we will not be returning.

Was recommended as one of the nicest pubs in the area, so we tied in a visit with an afternoon walk . 2 adults and 2 children age 9, age 11 . Pub was busy but we were seated quickly . Both myself and the Mrs chose to have a roast . She is vegetarian, and only a very limited selection for vegetarians / vegan so went for the roast . Asked what the vegetarian option was , was informed that she would have extra veg , extra roast potatoes and an extra Yorkshire. Kids both ordered cheese burgers each from the kids menu . My meal was fine as I had Beef , but there was no extra veg or potatoes , just an extra Yorkshire pub vs the beef option , so Wife was disappointed. Hair in the veg which isn’t great either . Kids burgers came out and had onion rings , salad , relish , so I immediately asked if these were the children’s or adults , they were adults in fact so order was incorrect, but fair enough they only charged the children’s price . The salad that came out was not washed and had grit on the leaves which was lazy . But the kids enjoyed the burger . I asked the waitress for a pint of the bitter , as there was a bitter and a pale ale only on tap . She replied she had a pale ale and a bitter , I asked for the bitter , she replies ‘which one they are both bitters ‘ . I replied that one is a pale ale the other a dark bitter whilst slightly confused that after drinking real ale for 25 years a patron didn’t know the difference , and hey presto I got a pint of pale ale instead of the bitter !. Overall it’s a nice pub and the food is good quality . Just the details need some serious work on . Attention to detail , listening to orders , understand your a pub and what ale is , and wash your salad leaves , as after a preview review That we since noticed, another reviewer last year said the same . They either don’t read the reviews for feedback or think diners enjoy soil with their food .

Entering the pub, it was very quaint, with a log burner going in a corner. The staff were welcoming and friendly. We ordered drinks at the table , whilst looking at the menu.I choise mushrooms abd bacon in a creamy red wine and garlic sauce with a half warm baguette, my uncle had 3 yorkshire puddings with onion gravy and my son and partner had prawn cocktails, they ordered their little girls scampi, chips and peas to come out with our starters. For mains my uncle had meat an potato pie and i had an 8 to 10oz ribeye steak .my son and partner had scampi and a double cheeseburger with bacon. My steak was cooked exactly 8How we managed it i dont know but we all had a pudding, my grabdaughter got a choice of icecreams in with her meal and i had a blueberry creme brulee while the other 3 had warm chocolate fudge cake with cream or ice cream. Again all the puddings were delicious.I paid for the drinks and mine an my uncles meals which should have been £77 but under the government scheme cost me £43, definately worth it, to be fair the £77 would hsve been worth it , my son paid £ 32 , another bargain.I would highly reccomend this oub, it is a little gem, i plan on going back with my huband to try one of the dining pod .

Impromptu bank holiday Monday lunch after walking the dogs in Allerthorpe Woods. Only went for a main and we both chose sirloin steak (small 10oz medium rare, large 16oz blue). The two steaks with sides of onion rings, chips, salad and grilled tomato (why?) and a peppercorn and separate mushroom sauce came to £42. No drinks etc, so a little pricey in my experience. Additionally the steaks had much more fat on them than I would normally expect. The meal was pleasant, if not spectacular. As the sun was out, we opted for a seat outside. Due to the arrangement of the property, this meant sitting at the front of the pub, next to the main road, which we soon found out was very busy. The expected mix of cars and motorbikes most likely out for the bank holiday, but also lots of commercial vehicles, especially articulated lorries. Whilst I have nothing against them, and thought of them to be working on a bank holiday, it did dull the experience a bit. Still, now we know!

Three girls looked after the bar and meals, and none were pleasant , helpful or quick...they all just seemed as though they didn’t want to be there. We had to ask for our order to be taken, ask for the desserts menu and never got a smile out of any of them. We had to wait a long time for our meal, which probably wasn’t their fault but they certainly weren’t busy as they often stood chatting or simply disappeared and no staff were to be found. I would go back again for the quality of the food and if the staff were more efficient and smiley I’m sure the place would be a gold mine!

We stayed in a nearby cottage where the Visitors Book suggested a meal at The Plough Inn. We went, and then went back again 2 days later. Our party of 6 included 2 Senior Citizens, an 11 year old and an 8 year old, plus 2 in-between.We all found a great choice and struggled to decide which of many items to choose. Plus they were very willing to amend the stated items to suit some particular wishes. Quality excellent but service on the second night was a little slow which caused me to reluctantly award 4 not 5 stars. 4 and a half would have been a fairer score. But very worth a visit, or two

Touring the area for a Sunday afternoon drive we happened upon this pub nicely situated on a bend on the road so you can’t miss it whichever way that you are going. It’s a typical country pub on the outside and even more so inside. Spacious car park to the rear of the building.

Visited tonight 4 people.Seated quickly and staff waiting on very polite. Orders taken in good time, however, when the starters were brought out 1 of them being pate stuffed breaded mushrooms, there were 3 on the plate!!.Small ones at that, no more than 30mm diameter, so not much pate inside. That's £2 per mushroom!!.2 of the mains ordered from the specials board, Venison and Cod dishes were very small and veg portions were the same. Not what we expected and will not be returning.

Came here the other night with friends and their 2 kids aswell as our young daughter. Service is great as always and the food was delicious, we had the steak pie (the pastry is to die for), burgers, steak, scampi, and the specials curry! No complaints at all, clear plates all round including my 1 year olds scampi and chips!! We then had desserts we couldn't decide what to have to ordered a number of different ones, including their homemade cheesecake which again went down a treat, happy full tummys left that evening and we'll definitely be returning with more friends and family! You won't regret going here they are the perfect English pub with a great atmosphere and food to go with it!

Went with my partner while staying nearby for a spontaneous lunch date. There seemed to be multiple large reservations as parties were waiting outside for it to open which worries us as to wait times. We shouldn't have, the food was absolutely fantastic, and with us within 20 mins. I had the scampi which tasted fresher than the one I'd had on the coast 2 days previously and my partner had the steak pie, I had to stop him licking the plate after. Would definitely recommend and would probably drive the 2 hours from home to go back.

We visited twice whilst camping locally in Allerthorpe at Allerthorpe Lake Park. The food was great both visits. On the first evening I had pate to start which was delicious served with caramelised onions. This was followed with the pie and veg. The our could have done with more pastry but it was still very tasty and contained a lot of chunky meat. The next day we went on a dog walk behind the pub in the woodlands and then sat outside and enjoyed 2 x hot meat baguettes with chips. Both were delicious (pork & apple and beef with gravy). If you like gin, try the rhubarb gin and ginger ale it was amazing!!

We moved inside as there were too many.Staff behind the bar swatting wasps! Not much choice on the menu, vegetarian choice very poor.Prawn sandwich was good. Kids chicken pasta was good.Vegetarian Spanish Omelette very poor. Basically an Omelette and two slices of potato. I ate it as I was hungry. The homemade chips need washing (scrubbing) before deep fried. This will avoid the grittiness. Expensive for what we had. Would not rush back here.Best thing going for this place was a pleasant waitress.

The Exhibition is a grand old pub dating from 1702 that is situated on a very busy junction opposite Bootham Bar in York. As you enter up the steep couple of steps you are greeted by dark and atmospheric front room which is split by the central bar, it's a mish mash of Victorian and Art Deco with every single bit of wall space occupied with old photos, paintings, brasses and other Breweriana. There are wood panels, glowing yellow lighting and rich dark red ceiling which envelops you into the cosy space. There's so much to take in, especially the Art Deco stained glass panels and large fireplace, you'd almost be distracted from the offerings behind the bar. Which are not the most exciting but there's at least usually a couple of beers from Brew York, Black Sheep and Timothy Taylors, all priced at the usual City centre prices. Where The Exhibition really excels is it's outside space, if you follow your way around to the back of the bar and down a fairy light lit corridor it opens out first into a large conservator which is used for group bookings and then out into what is clearly the biggest and best Beer Garden in York! A beautifully secluded long yard with mature plants and great vintage wall art throughout. The only slight let down is the rather Victorian toilets which could probably do with a bit of an update but otherwise this is a very much overlooked pub that is superb in Summer and would be nice and welcoming inside any time of the year.
