We had a stay for two nights with two rooms, dinner on evening one and two breakfasts. Positive Points 1. Quality steak 2. Delicious mackerel starter Negative Points 1. Cold and unwelcoming 2. Dirty tables and cutlery 3. Very long wait for food and nobody checked if everything was ok 4. Different change for same drinks every time. 5. No staff....one person does everything! 6. Filthy bedrooms, thick with dust and cobwebs 7. Rooms full of broken items ...mirrors, blinds 8. No slip mat provided for elderly people, so unable to have a shower (my mum was told to throw a towel in the bath!) 9. Extremely old mattress, lumpy and uncomfortable, old duvet with lumps and bumps 10. Linen bundles and beer barrels left outside rooms and at bottom of the stairs...huge fire and safety risk 11. Limited breakfast and very small quantity 12. Coffee and tea not restocked, dirty cups left in room and bed not made 13. Bathroom was rusty, filthy and hadn't been cleaned. Toilets were still dirty from previous guests.

Nice traditional local Cotswolds pub. As to be expected , the rooms are small, but lovely and clean. The shower was great! It is no doubt nicer in the Summer when the outside areas are tidier and more welcoming - but the food was amazing - I would highly recommend the brisket ! Jack the dog was made welcome.

We found this great pub purely by chance, but what a find. Possibly one of the best Sunday Roasts we have had in years. The owners raise their own beef herd and it shows. Great service, fantastic roast and good atmosphere.

This message is to say a huge thank you to Jackson, the Chef, for the magnificent level of cuisine, throughout each course, on the evening of our visit for dinner with friends. In addition, I believe it was Nell, who served us. Her attention to detail, and her natural personal skills, were so very welcoming and sincere. We did have the pleasure of saying, 'Thank You' to them both but you can never say 'thank you' enough I feel. Two young people who displayed gifts, and skills that will prepare them well for life ahead; an absolute joy. A wonderful evening. Thank You.

Went at lunch time with my wife, two children (8 and 3) and our German Shepherd. My wife and I had a chuck eye steak, peppercorn sauce. My son had the Fillet and my youngest the pasta. Food was really good. Excellent quality beef. Great chips and awesome peppercorn sauce. My only very small criticism was a small selection of draft beers but that is being very picky.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

A lovely quaint building and the only pub in a quintessential, picturesque, Cotswold village on a Sunday lunch time. You would expect it to be crammed - but not a bit. We were a group. We had booked in advance. We had paid a worthwhile deposit and we were looking forward to an English Sunday lunch. Our luck was out. It transpires that the current owners have deemed that it is no longer a pub but a "steak house" - and to prove it they had a fairly unintelligible menu the key feature which poked you in the eye was "Dexter steak £70"! A lot of local Dexter cattle will live to see a happy old-age retirement thanks to that pricing policy! They finally rustled up fish and chips (even though it wasn't on the Sunday menu); they then quibbled our deposit; there wasn't even salt in the salt cellars so .........we ate up, paid up and left. The lovely village of Cold Aston doesn't deserve to be let down like this. This pub should be bustling. And if the basics were sorted out, it would be.

We arrived to a completely empty pub so no pressure on the staff. I explained my dietary problem which was fairly easily dealt with. On the specials board was a half smoked chicken with salad which suited me fine provided I had a balsamic vinegar dressing. My husband and sister ordered the burgers. On arrival their burgers looked impressive. My chicken dish not so, it was a breast of chicken smothered in Parmesan. There was no mention of cheese on the menu, I hate cheese. Pretty sure it was a Caesar salad, also with a dressing I could not eat. It was taken away, I was apologetic as I thought it might have been my error. However I was then told the chef had burnt the replacement trying to crisp it up and would do another. I was asked if I would prefer a mayonnaise dressing, I stated that I had requested balsamic. I think that was when they realised the error. It finally arrived with said half a chicken. However once I started eating it I quickly realised it was still very pink close to the bone so I could only eat the very outer parts. Both the burgers were done to a crisp and very dry. My sister couldn’t finish hers. My husband struggled but did. We made the lady who cleared our plates aware as she asked for an honest comment. She apologised saying it wasn’t normally that way. Imagine our shock when presented with the bill for £75 to which 10% service had been added. We had 2 cokes and 2 ciders to drink apart from the food. My husband refused to pay the service charge but there was no further apology or suggestion of reducing the bill. We had such high hopes on arrival in a lovely location. It was sadly disappointing.

Just had a fantabulous meal at the Plough Inn!! Beautiful setting in a quaint village, excellent service and outstanding food. The whole family enjoyed it! I have to particularly complement the food and the chef. The food was delicious and the beef was by far the best we’ve had in the area. My son said that it was the best steak he’s had in his life. Cooked to perfection!! Thx to the team at the Plough Inn!

Been here many times in the past under previous staff...always had an excellent meal and service... we booked a fortnight ago for 'Sunday roast' on the Spring bank holiday and travelled 15 miles each way from where we were staying only to find when presented with the menu that there was no option of a Sunday roast!. I queried it and was told 'they had stopped the week before as there was no demand for the roast dinner'!. Despite it still showing on the pubs website? We chose to go elsewhere as we didn't fancy steak and chips or similar at lunchtime!..We should have realised that things had changed as there were no diners in at 2pm on a Sunday? Note to the owner/ staff..please remove your Sunday Roast section from your menu ...we went just up the road to Kineton and found a pub packed to the rafters with people eating Sundsy Roasts !...perhaps they'd all had the same experience as us?

A spur of the moment decision to have supper at our local. Pleasantly busy with a warm atmosphere, a friendly welcome, dogs and children all well behaved too! We had squid to start, rolled in herbs, meaty and so much better than salt and pepper squid, followed by the best rump steak we had ever eaten, accompanied by a marrow fat sauce and perfectly done chips. Top quality ingredients cooked to perfection. Not cheap, but a real treat, thank you Nic and team.

Stayed for 1 night with my Mum as we were visiting the Cotswolds. Was advertised with parking; but no off street parking was available. When we arrived, were greeted by a friendly lady, shown up to the room. The room was unsatisfactory - thick layer of mould all over the windows, walls & shower, dirty kettle, dust (thick & black) all over the room, dirty floor & walls, bowel motions in the toilet brush. We spoke to the lady who greeted us to which she apologised as was not aware of the above issues & arranged for us to move rooms. The new room was an upgrade from what we had booked and was of a completely different standard - although there was mould in the windows, the overall cleanliness was of a high standard, tea & coffee facilities, large TV, comfy bed (had a brilliant nights sleep), room was warm & cosy. Only down side was that were was only 1 mirror in the bathroom, so no mirror in the bedroom to use when getting ready (ie when using compliances). We booked an evening meal which was superb; both agreed it was one of the best burgers we had had. Massive compliments to the chef. The general manager apologised for the room & we were given a free dessert; he was polite and nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast was also delicious (full English breakfast) and the lady who had greeted us the day before was pleasant & friendly. So overall, once we had moved rooms, it was a brilliant stay, the staff resolved the issues promptly & efficiently👍🏼

I’m local to this lovely village. And had my sister & partner unexpectedly for the weekend. We decided to go out for Sunday lunch, & my request for a table a week before was confirmed. Our booking was 12.30, we arrived a few mins early. It was quiet. We walked in, there were a couple of staff members behind the bar, & one drifting about the seating area. No one welcomed us! It was as if we’d arrived before opening time? We all ordered the roast beef, which was the only roasted meat available. Our meals came out very quickly. They were nicely presented. But unfortunately they were luke warm. We brought this to someone’s attention, and they were whisked away. I think they were replated, & returned back hot. The beef was delicious, so much flavour. My sisters request for less rare meat was accommodated. The vegetables, & Yorkshire puddings all delicious. We all ordered dessert. I think we ordered sticky toffee pudding all round, which was very nice. And the request for custard as well as ice cream for the men, was carried out without any problem. It’s a lovely picturesque pub. So it was a shame that we got such an unfriendly welcome. And disappointing that the meals came out hardly warm

Three of us went on a sunny Thursday evening. We had a drink outside while looking at the menu. For starters, two of us had the burrata and one had the steak tartare. For mains, two of us shared a cut of meat from the blackboard - 900g of bone-in rib steak (we were hungry!) - and my daughter had the fillet steak. We ordered the beef dripping chips and a selection of vegetables, all washed down with a bottle of sangiovese red wine. For pudding, we had the lemon tart and a baked chocolate pot. All of the food was superb. The rib steak was sumptuous, perfectly cooked and locally reared! My daughter (who has eaten steak in some top restaurants in London) loved the fillet steak and we all agreed that the chips were excellent. The lemon tart was one of the best I have eaten and the hot chocolate pot is highly recommended. The service was very friendly and efficient. I'm so glad to have found this place and we will definitely return.

I am visiting from America. My goal for this trip was to enjoy the Cotswolds in the superior food. There's a lot of competition in the area and this is a top contender. The owners of the inn are also cattle farmers of the Irish Dexter. They are grass fed only for three years and dry aged 30-50'days. The result? Fabulous marveled beef that melted in my mouth. The.hard work has paid off.

Their menus looked keenly priced. Lovely location and decor. Good beer. However, they specialse in Steak. Fillet, Sirloin and Rump. they didn't have enough Fillet for 6 of us ( early on a Saturday evening) only one Sirloin ( which turned out Fatty and tough) . So, One person had Rump, which was black on the outside yet bloody and cold in the middle. When we sent the rump back , the waitress rolled her eyes. They also sent the wrong wine. So please check when wine arrives. Pudding ok. Overall, I was disappointed with the food. The venue itself, is lovely. Clean toilets. We live fairly local and there's quite a lot of choice. Not sure I'd rush back though

Excellent service and a warm welcome especially to our puppy. The food was ok but the steaks were not the best quality (thank goodness the knives were sharp) and given we only had two courses and one round of drinks £35 pp seems quite steep.

Booked in and last minute but not disappointed. Efficient welcome, drinks brought promptly. Amazingly the house beer was only £3.90 per pint! Good wine menu too.My husband had lamb rump and said it was the best he had had in a long time. I had the pollock with spicy chorizo which was delicious.Good service throughout.

What a delight! A proper gourmet pub, independently owned and run, and set in the beautiful village of Cold Aston in the Cotswolds where the horses wonder by. The food is just delish, and sourced locally. The chocolate mousse is to die for!If you’re looking for fast food, this isn’t for you. It’s a place of proper home cooked gourmet pub grub. I will definitely go back.

Over the past couple of weeks I've visited here quite a bit and each time I'm greeted with such warmth. It's relaxed, friendly and the perfect spot to while away an afternoon in the sun. The food is so great - from the fresh watermelon salad to the scummy burger and fries (I'm slowly making my way through the whole menu - the croquettes are a must). Shout out to Tom, Chris and the team for doing an amazing job in what's been incredibly trying times for the industry.

As a vegan (me) and Coeliac (him) couple, it’s hard to find restaurants that accommodate both. The Ploughs online menu looked promising on sight however when we visited the options were not clearly marked and were quite confusing. However, Chris our waiter was on hand to guide us through and checked and double checked our limited options. As a result of excellent waiting from Chris we were able to adapt the menu to suit our dietary requirements. Hopefully, the labelling of vegan options will improve as a result of our visit! The food was delicious and surpassed our expectations . It was clearly locally sourced produce and tasted as it should. Lovely atmosphere, great service and food. Thank you.

In a time when the hospitality business has been really struggling and places will go out of business, here was one who wasn’t even making an effort. Shame on you for putting a young woman in a humiliating position and shame on your chef for providing such disgraceful food. Appalling service, which we could forgive as the young waitress couldn’t be blamed for her lack of training. She didn’t know what she was doing and this was her first evening. Did not know how to take an order. Talked her through what to do, a long and laborious process. We were kind and helpful others may not have been.Inn almost empty , shown to table in courtyard, one other occupied.First courses appeared quite quickly not good. Plates were cleared with our help. Waited a long time for main courses and to call them poor would be too flatter them. Chips dark brown but st soggy, peas cold and bullet hard, fish OK but all food tepid. We asked for condiments, another wait and there was pepper instead of salt waited for the correct ones. All starving ate some of the food. Children still hungry but dessert menu only had crumble and ice-cream left. Gave up and I was ready to go and complain and ask for reduction on our bill when our son returned, he had paid the bill. I think he was embarrassed as he had booked this place and just wanted to get out.

I went for lunch with my family (11 in total). I ordered the roast. The food came quickly, even though they were really busy. The food was delicious and lots of it. I especially liked the cauliflower cheese with the roast. The kids had macaroni cheese and sausage and chips which they loved. The staff were fantastic and so accommodating bringing us blankets, as we were outside, and making sure we were warm and comfortable enough. The man who served us, Chris, was really friendly and kept making sure everything was ok with the food and kept us topped up with drinks. We’ll definitely be coming again.

Really disappointed and attention of staff was not great. reputations will not let forever.Get the fundamentals right quality of food and service. Will not visit again.

We visited on bank holiday Monday and couldn’t get a table for food, we could for drinks! Returned on Friday lunchtime. Very poor. Surly staff, a new team member trying their best, seemed to have been left ‘to get on with it’. Food was disappointing, had mussels and many didn’t open, plaice (fish) was sopping and overcooked, partners burger was dry, triple cooked chips were soggy, best part of the meal was the house salad. Staff didn’t ask how the meal was despite us leaving enough to indicate their could be a problem. Yes I know the Plough (and some readers) will say we should have complained. We usually would. We felt the surly and dismissive attitude of the staff didn’t inspire confidence that feedback would be taken positively. We were keen to support pubs in local villages as we come back from lockdown. Hopefully this will stimulate some action to sharpen their act: improved service and quality of-food for example. We may be tourists and I accept the locals keep you surviving all year round, however a customer is a customer. It is a fantastic pub, in a great location. It can be much more with a little effort.

I really want to support pubs who’ve all had such a wretched time and are fighting for survival....We had lunch with friends who live locally. Our drinks came quickly but then it went downhill...one of our party ordered two starters as a main but one came as a starter, no one else was having a starter (although I’d ordered a bowl of soup for a main as the vegetarian menu is poor). After our friend finished his starter (that should have come as part of his main) we then waited over an hour for the rest of our food....the only comment given was a cursory “we’re very busy” but other diners who’d arrived after us had all received their food! Finally our food came. My soup was luke warm and one of the fish dishes had dried out (presumably because it was kept warm somewhere whilst the rest was assembled). All that was actually needed was a genuine apology but we didn’t get one, just a rather shirty and defensive expression of surprise.None of us was looking for the fish and soup to be knocked off the bill, we’re all acutely aware how tough things have been, but a genuine apology with some sincerity would have sufficed. The cost of the dishes was deducted from our bill which really saddened us all.We won’t go back now sadly....

The food was lovely, to us good value for money. The pub was nice and warm and friendly...however we were not told to track and trace! The sign to track and trace was next to the bar and was not before you entered. As a result customers came into the pub without masks! This is the reason why I would not go again. I am used to pubs enforcing track&trace (with a nice kind smile) like GreeneKing pubs which do an excellent job. A real shame as the food was lovely...

This is a really welcome, beautifully renovated addition to the area. A warm and friendly local with stone walls and open fires. Food is very good, modern pub style at a very reasonable price for The Cotswolds. Staff are very friendly and efficient and the clientele are a great combination of locals at the bar, people eating and walkers, cyclists etc calling in for a pint. Been several times since it reopened and all have been good.

Served a Biarra Moretti, didn’t look right, went back to the bar to complain, was told there was nothing wrong with the pint and no chance of changing. Batman very rude.
