We have just spent a fantastic weekend at Thyme. Everything about the place was perfect except for our anniversary dinner at the Ox Barn. Service was extremely slow - we were still waiting for our main courses more than an hour and a half after sitting down. The food was adequate but nowhere near special enough to justify the prices, and the markup on wines by the glass is truly eyewatering. They did give us desserts on the house but overall this was unfortunately the low point of a lovely stay. We ate at the Swan the following evening which was a far superior experience in every respect - better food, service and atmosphere and for much more reasonable prices.

It’s actually shocking that this place is on the Michelin guide. While the service was top notch, and atmosphere ok, the food, which is supposed to be the star of the show was a massive let down. The wines were £19 for a small glass. When it came it tasted like a £5 per bottle wine from the corner shop. We had 3 course set meal and presentation wise it just kept getting worse. Starter was unnecessarily slathered in tons of mayo. Something that is meant to be eaten with bread wasn’t served with bread so had to get that as an extra. Why? Aren’t there better ways to upsell? Why serve an incomplete course to begin with? Pasta with mains was incredibly chewy and the greens served with it were stringy and woody. I appreciate trying to go with the foraging theme but if you’re using old growth then make sure to cook it properly? Dessert was simple creme caramel slapped on the plate. That’s it. No garnish, no creativity to be found. I wouldn’t be so harsh if the prices reflected the quality. But it didn’t. I had better meals in disappointing chain restaurants.

Four of us attended this place last night and it was one of the most disappointing restaurants we’ve ever been to. Oh my God, If this is what you call Michelin service, then obviously I am missing something. We all ordered lamb, and each plate had about three slices as thin as tissue paper, completely stone cold. I’m sure the chef forgot to heat it in the microwave. The plates were cold, too. I’m certain our food sat on the chef’s tray for 20 minutes before someone realized they needed to serve our table. Once the food arrived, we literally had to wait for extra 4/5 mintues before we finally had to call a staff member to bring us cutlery—with no apologies,. I did notice the lady at the table next to us had to send her food back because as it was cold. They wanted to charge £20+ for the service charge—can you imagine how much our actual bill was? I’m sorry, but I refused to pay the service charge. This option should be available on the card reader as YES or NO. Why should I pay a service charge just for someone to bring cold food to my table?. I was really disappointed that this place hold a Michelin title. I reckon this title has gone to their heads, and they've become overconfident in how to cook good food and provide good service to make you feel special, take this comment as a feedback, not as criticism.

We were at the property for my wife's 60th birthday dinner. We had just flown in from another part of Europe and were a bit tired. The experience began with our drive down the road into the property, waiting for the local sheep herd to clear the road. It was the perfect time of the evening, setting the stage for a wonderful dinner. The room is perfectly designed, with the original massive wooden roof looming over a beautiful interior. The atmosphere was festive (on a Wednesday night) and the sound level was just enough to have lots of fun. The service was amazing. The sommelier was helpful and knowledgable. Every starter was intricate and delicious and managed to appeal to my wife, who sometimes values healthy over tasty. They were all one in the same. The mains were also fantastic, with the beef and duck both sublime. Dessert was great. All in all, an experience that is totally worth it, whether staying at The Thyme or elsewhere in the area. We had eaten in two reknown Michelin (a 1 and a 2) starred restaurants that week in Madeira, and neither of them were as enjoyable or memorable as the Ox Barn!!

Excellent welcome, beautiful setting, amazing food but service is slow between meals…. Wonderful place, such a relaxed setting, beautiful gardens, historic building, so well designed and an interesting menu. Welcoming was professional, menu has some interesting options. Simple I know but the bread and butter was excellent. Great wine selections, starters mouthwatering and the main (when it arrived) was full of flavour. If not for the service times, this would be excellent in rating. Would go back for sure.

Service was really lacking. We first sat in the lounge area for a cocktail as we had arrived a little early. After about 10 minutes a waiter approached us with menus and twice asked to take our order for dinner (from our seats in the lounge). He seemed to want to rush us - which was just weird as it was a Monday and the place was in no way busy before, during or after our meal. The second time he was actually pushy so we moved on to the table and made our order (about 20 minutes after our reservation time). We ordered a starter that never arrived. Mid-way through the meal one of us ordered a second glass of wine that didn’t arrive until we asked for it a second time. When the bill arrived they had charged us for an extra glass of wine we never ordered or received. Odd to experience such odd and clumsy service in a Michelin star restaurant. The food ok but rather unremarkable. Pasta sauce was a tad dried out. Lamb was overcooked. The setting is really stylish and beautiful.

Stunning venue and delicious food. The menu was straight forward yet the choices worked. However, our meal was spoiled due to sitting next to an uncleared table from our starter onwards. In the end I picked up the dirty napkin and put it back on the table hoping one of the staff would notice. They didn’t. I have attached the photos. Plus we could not get any server to take our wine order despite waving perpetually and then asking the main course server who stated that he would send someone. He didn’t. Sadly we gave up on being able to share a bottle of quality wine with our mains. We managed to get a glass of the Portuguese Red each half way our main course. We had given up on selecting a bottle. The staff were very brusque and very busy, however, no one seemed to have “eyes on the room” which is possibly why our experience was less than we expected. In conclusion, a beautiful wow factor venue and yummy food, spoilt by sitting next to a dirty uncleared table for the duration of our service and the absence of a bottle of wine.

To start the picturesque setting of the ox barn is absolutely beautiful, and a fantastic place to sit and eat dinner. The service is polite and watchful without being overbearing and the food is largely very good, letting the seasonal ingredients speak for themselves accompanied by a menu that is small but appropriate for the setting. The only fault I could find in the food was that the oysters were quite gritty, which in a restaurant of the ox’s barns calibre is a bit disappointing, having said that the chicken was cooked to perfection and the simplicity of the dish allowed you to enjoy each ingredient for what it is, as in my opinion it should be. Another slight let down which for me is a trap that too many restaurants fall into is the verbiage on the menu being a bit over the top, if not bordering on pretentious. A menu should always be easily read and describes what you’re going to eat both simply and clearly. I would say to anyone hoping to be blown away by a plethora of different flavours and complicated pairings, thats just not what top restaurants do. You should be able to identify everything on the plate which was certainly the case here. Overall the ox barn is a great destination brimming with potential, but makes some clumsy mistakes that could be easily improved to take the experience to the next level.

Looks good, but disappointing really. Nice place, nice plating, high prices, everything suggests quality. But the food is bland, and the service terrible. During our trip we found hair in the food twice. Staff were bemused. Forgot basic things. They don’t have a vegan menu but offer to remove animal products… then forget and give you the normal plate that then has to be taken back. They also bring plates to the wrong table and act annoyed that you’re not the right people. One of our party, facing the rest of the room said she spent most of the night watching waiters go from table to table trying to find the right place. So ultimately it tries to look like a high-end joint, but it’s a complete shambles. Style over substance. You get better service and quality at a regular pub.

We sat outside in the beautiful garden and perused the menu, but disappointed that we had missed the delights that the main menu offered. However, when we explained to our waiter James what had happened he was off in a shot and returned, having spoken to chef, with good news. James offered us the full lunch menu, as he and chef agreed that we shouldn’t leave disappointed. James, thank you. You turned everything around in seconds. The entrance to this gorgeous barn to eat is just simply glorious and the wonderful gardens - That is where it sadly ends. The worst Caesar Salad as a starter I have ever experienced and 2 out of the 4 main courses were returned. Chicken not cooked through for our friend and mine was a Monkfish swimming in hundreds of capers / the dish on the menu didn't even mention 'capers' only fennel and pak choi , yet you couldn't see the fish for the sea of capers. Anyway they kindly took them away and were promised 2 chicken dishes to be returned. We never saw our main courses return to the table again - gone !! some antipasti as a sorry for running late appeared ? very strange indeed ( we were told 15 mins for 2 portions of chicken to come to us ) and after 35/40 minutes plus the other 2 guests had finished their main courses anyway by now, a rather shabbily dressed manager came to our table ( the ill fitting suit was something out of a Sue Ryder charity shop window - terrible front of house advertisement in manner and fashion ) **The waitress we had was so very lovely but it wasn't down to her to make things right. On our way back to the carpark we noticed tables outside not cleared and milk jugs lying on their sides on the tables plus puddles of milk developing on the floor , cups , coffee cafetiere's / plates etc lying around and menus strewn about the patio. There were many tables not cleared yet 3 members of staff chatting in reception as we came though. We did take a picture of all the mess as we were so shocked . Not a great welcome into reception if you were staying . Such a great shame as it could be so fab but my gosh you need a serious shake up! Shoddy management , food expensive and really don't bother until they get their act together. Plenty more places to eat and choose from I promise in the area and I am a local customer.

I visited Ox Barn in June 2021 and had a lovely set meal and experience therefore I booked to visit again for my partners birthday. Unfortunately our recent visit was extremely disappointing. The service was good with our polite waitress making sure we had everything we needed and that our coat were taken. However, on this occasion it was the food that was a let down. The starters were good but the mains were really terrible. I usually like not having much choice on a menu as I find it hard to choose what to have, but in this case there wasn’t much I fancied (which is rare!) I think the actual menu should be posted online so you can see what will be on offer when you go. I know it changes frequently but I am coming for the food and want to know there will be something I will enjoy. We finally decided and ordered two hake and two lamb mains. The hake, sauce and sides were so bland and extremely disappointing for the price. Overall, the price and taste of the food completely let our experience down. We did inform our waitress that the Hake was disappointing but nothing was done. The Hake also arrived very pink and bloody (see picture) which is an acceptable way to eat it but it was very unappetising and just added to the disappointment. The lamb was also not great and was slightly dry, again for the price, not what you want. We ate the food, as following our comment on the hake nothing was done so figured we would rather not be hungry. I will note that they brought out some ice cream with a candle for my partners birthday which was a nice touch, but by this point we had already had enough of the restaurant and just wanted to leave. The setting of the restaurant is beautiful and the interior is special but we will not be returning sadly.

Sometimes, spontaneity pays dividends. Last Saturday evening we decided to make a booking and have dinner the Ox Barn at Thyme, Southrop. What a delight. Seldom if indeed ever have I enjoyed the venue, the food and the ambience to quite this extent. Driving into the estate offers an early morsel of the splendour and beauty the engulfs as you enter the truly magnificently renovated buildings. The restaurant itself is simply exquisite - dramatic beams, artwork and selective decoration (and the occasional sheep - I will leave that for future visitors to discover!) frame the extraordinary dining room. At the table, fine detail abounds, the menus are delightful, an elegant font providing an artistic announcement to the food that follows. The dining experience exemplifies the combination of exceptional ingredients and culinary skills. The wine list reflects the same refined and diverse themes with the entire experience brought together by a highly attentive brigade of staff. Thyme offers something that is potentially unique. It was an experience to savour and one which I will undoubtedly repeat.

It used to be busy with an agreeable menu, especially in the summer, sitting pleasantly outdoors. What a disappointing change. A gussied up menu, I could not find a main course I liked and ended up with two starters. Malfatti (main course) turned out to be 3 very small dumplings, rather like nursery food; there was pork, chicken and hake, but on Sunday you would expect a decent roast beef or lamb. There was beef but it was £100 pounds for two, which is the highest price ever seen by me for anything like that. Judging by the other portions, both size (very small) and taste (bland), it would not have been worth it. The prices were eye watering. Even the bread and butter for mopping up the poached egg starter was £4.50, the cheapest bottle of wine £36. Main courses without extras around £30. Our bill came to over £110 per couple, and that was by eating very little, sharing puddings etc. no coffee. There was a hair on my leek starter plate, which was off putting. No wonder it was not full, and even so the service was slow. I won't be returning.

So the room is lovely and the food was ok to good but the lack of competent service was the major let down. Drinks order taken late, coats not taken until we asked, had to ask for wine list, second bottle of wine poured into the same glasses and not tasted first, wine warm so required ice, turbot not available but not mentioned until ordered then told it was hake, every dish was auctioned off at the the table because they weren’t using position numbers, two salts on the table rather than salt and pepper, coffee and teas served before dessert, no sugar offered and milk supplies with two mint teas and an espresso. Some food was good, some fell short, and it’s not inexpensive. The place is incredibly poorly sign posted so it too quite an effort to locate the restaurant which from the way we approached was mis-labelled as the Ox House not the Ox Barn. This was all on the back of just 5 tables in on the night we went. Overall yet another Cotswold venue, furnished to the hilt but operated by a company with no restaurant passion. Clearly not busy enough to be a going concern on our visit yet no effort made to market the venue, sign post it or look after the few guests who had come. As a result it felt like the business was indifferent to whether we were there or not. Our waitress bravely asked the question as we were given the bill and got, I hope politely, the same rundown as above. The manager, who incidentally was guilty of the absolutely criminal sin of pouring the second bottle without offering to taste or swap glasses didn’t come over to follow up. FYI we paid the service because the floor team clearly had no idea what they had done wrong.

Lovely surroundings, but I was just hoping for better. It’s such a pretty location and feels so promising, but it doesn’t live up to expectations. For a £80 a head lunch (without alcohol, only 2 courses) it really needed to be exceptional, and it wasn’t. Service was very very slow and poorly paced. The menu was surprisingly unbalanced and lacking variety - two pork dishes out of 6 mains? And the food was nice but not great. Overseasoned starter and main. And the chips… goodness me. Terrible! Thick cut but bland and undercooked. So promising but just didn’t hit the mark. There are better options around. It’s just a shame that this felt like such a let down.

The menu was good, although there was a series lack of vegetarian options (1 main course!) and I think if you're a vegan a phone call before booking would be highly recommended. The wine menu was rather small considering the availability of space they have and the prices increased rather steeply so if your on a budget you'll be limited to maybe one red and one white wine. Considering the price of the meals the service didn't match what you would expect from, what should be a quality restaurant. The staff weren't very knowledgeable or attentive to our table at all. I don't think our waitress even smiled at us. It almost felt slightly unwelcoming. I'd say it felt more like gastro pub service than a restaurant which was a shame. The food was well presented and although the starters were pretty tasty, everyone had to reach for the salt and pepper to season their main courses. I cant remember the last time I had to do this in a restaurant. The lamb looked very fatty and the fat hadn't been rendered down very well. The beef, although well cooked and looking good was a bit chewy and not melt in the mouth as you'd expect. Our side of Duck fat ratte potatoes were barely cooked and the fat seemed like a bit of an after thought for the dish. The only reason most of our dishes were empty at the end of the meal was because we had someone that eats three times as much as an average person. Otherwise everyone would have left something on their plate, not because there was too much, but because it lacked flavour or was too oily/fatty. Thankfully the salt and pepper mills are of good quality as they are well used!! Overall, despite its looks and cost, the food was average, the service was below average and it was only really the venue that makes it an attractive place to go.

Amazing food, fabulous location/barn. Service rather disappointing for a restaurant like this - young staff forgot some orders and hard to get their attention as they were liking at each other’s phones behind the bar.

The ambiance was good. The food was good. The service was slow - there were times when we thought we'd been forgotten. The prices, in our opinion, were a good 50% above what was justified.

This gastro pub is a real find. The food was excellent and the menu was varied. I’d particularly recommend the venison haunch in cranberry saw. There was also a very good vegetarian burger. The food was delivered quickly and the staff who most welcoming and friendly. Thank you all for such a lovely lunch.

Menu had decent choices. Seemed to offer value for money. A find! Easy to find. There are rooms and will consider these for next trip -I know nothing more.
