Most delicious chips, fish cake and mushy peas I’ve had for some time. Piping hot, crispy, freshly cooked. Simple, basic premises but friendly service and most importantly top class chips and food.

Forgot to put all of order in the package, and we didn’t find out until travelled home. Called to advise, no offer of reduced cost due to huge inconvenience and having to drive several miles back again to collect. Very rude and poor customer service by lady owner. Staff fine, but due to owners terrible attitude, would strongly advise avoiding this establishment. Clearly only led by money

Firstly the name is wrong. The St Cross chippy is called First Plaice. The Harestock chippy is called The Plaice. These reviews are all messed up because someone got the names mixed up. First Plaice (St Cross) is awful, tried it several times over the years & food has been bad each time. The Plaice (Harestock) is fab, never had a bad meal from them.

Large portion of chips is a small portion of chips in all other chip shops. The chips are good but just so small a large portion is not even enough for two people. You literally get one scoop of chips. Would hate see what a small portion gets you.

We get home start eating our food and it’s taste like it’s been sat there all night, it was so gritty and tasted like old dirty oil. So I then called and asked if they could help I was extremely polite and just said I’d rather not drag my kids out in the car again because it was late and we had all settled. The incompetent rude owner decided to tell me I had to bring it all back the next day and she has never had one complaint about her food. I wouldn’t have bothered taking it back if she had apologised and was understanding but due to her lack of customer services I saved what dog sh** food was left and did take it back the next day. Again I was polite called in with a smile and asked for her quietly so her customers in the shop didn’t over hear. Straight off the bat she said I was a liar the food was fine opened up the food and because not every single chip was there and some food had been eaten obviously!! She said well you’ve eaten it your a liar it’s fine your a liar! She then told me she would only refund me £10 I hadn’t even asked for a refund I just wanted some polite service and understanding but no she just continued to tell me I was a horrible person and I was a liar. If I was a horrible person I would have gone in all g*ns blazing ready to argue and embarrass her in front of her customers and I would have put it all over social media because I’m sure if you live in Winchester you know of a great Facebook page called Winchester rants which really gets your opinion across. I explained to her that is what I would have done if I was horrible but I hadn’t and I wouldn’t. She then told me she’s got me on cctv F knows why she told me that because I hadn’t done anything wrong 🤣 refunded me and told me to get out of her shop. When you read this I hope it pis*** you off take some courses in customer service you vile human this could have been resolved with an apology but your actions made it more.

The Fish & chips we had for our evening meal from the Plaice in Winchester were very poor. Chips must have been left over from lunch time as they weren’t nice at all, definitely not fresh & unappetising. Fish looked nice but wasn’t as over cooked & batter too thick. The pea fritter was the worst I’ve ever tasted. Won’t be going back.

I’ve lived in the St Cross neighbourhood for around 12 years and have visited this fish & chip shop on just two occasions - soon after I moved here and most recently in June 2021. On the second occasion the fish was over cooked , light grey in colour and chewy. The batter was too thick and undercooked on the inside. And the chips were awful. They had a tough outer skin which seemed detached from the potato inside. If I had been told the chips were fried in engine oil I wouldn’t have been surprised because the flavour was indescribable. I would surmise that the chips were the remains from an earlier shift and reheated. Well fried fish should be white in colour and moist. And the batter crisp and thin. I will not First Plaice a third time.

I have been using this fish and chippy for years and travel several miles as my local ones are not very good. I have always had an excellent meal with the fish fresh and well cooked and enough chips for two. Tried again to see if it was still up to scratch and it was. It is called First Plaice and is next to the Bell Inn in St Cross, just in case you are confused.

i and a piece of haddock and chips well i have to say the portion of chips was not a large it was a medium size portion and the batter was very greasy and some of the chips were not evan cooked and all my family said that this place has won lots of awards well if they had well they need to do bigger portions of chips and make sure that there cooked properly and the batter is not so greasy and dripping with fat but i will never go back there because the staff was very moody and they snach the money out of your hands they do and thats why i use the fish and chip shop in st cross because the large potion of chips fills 4 people it does but the plaice chip shop is the WORST cap shop in winchester

Some if the food is cooked to order so you might have to wait but it’s def worth it. I drive out of my way just to come here for our fish and chips or sausage or burger savoy it’s tasty and fresh.

La razón es que necesitan que las personas entren y salgan rápidamente y las fichas pequeñas son más rápidas que grandes, así que nos hicieron esperar.En serio mal servicio - prueba en otro lugar

This entry is confusing (which I suspect is why the reviews are all over the place/plaice). The fish shop in St Cross (the address on this entry) is called "First Plaice" and is absolute rubbish. Lukewarm food, soggy chips, you get the idea. "The Plaice" is another fish shop about 2 miles away in Harestock (other side of Winchester). This one has an excellent reputation, though is apparently pricey (I have not been and it is not listed in trip advisor). So the moral of the story is: don't go to the wrong plaice!

Nipped in whilst at work in the evening and ordered pie n small chips. £5.30 lighter I got it and drove under a mile away to a better parking spot. Opened them up and was dismayed. The chips were mainly bits, hardly any salt n vinegar (obviously costly) and barely warm. They looked as if they had been in the warmer a while and were dry, tasteless and curling up into a fetal position. The pie was ok for a microwave heated one apart from being soggy.

Driving down the Motorway the M3 I felt like getting fish and chips and new exactly where to go for the best fish and chips for miles around. The great thing about the restaurant is that it is placed along the road where you can get off the Motorway drive through the town centre pick up your order in my case I dropped by ordered a decent size Haddock with a very decent portion of chips that was cooked freshly in front of me and quickly

A busy 'plaice', with a regular shop full of hungry customers, turned out to be reliable indicators of top class fish & chips. Cooked fresh to order, succulent cod in fresh crispy batter with proper chips. Delicious, worth travelling across town for and clearly very popular with locals! Curry (Chutneys) next door and Chinese two doors down also handy if people can't agree on a takeaway option.

Very highly rated chippie in Harestock and I can see why as the fish and chips are fresh, tasty and cooked to order. Sometimes there's a bit of a wait as they often don't have enough cod cooked but this is fine as you know it's fresh. It's a little pricey, too (£5 for a piece of haddock) and there seems to be little difference in the large or small portions of chips, but for flavour and popularity, this is tough to beat. A chippie off the old block.

Best fish n chips I've had (better the Chez Fred's in Bournemouth) Andy and the team create great fish and chips. They won plenty of awards for their chips over the years. It's not cheap but you're paying for good quality and ethically sourced produce. The sausages in batter are amazing and the team are warm and welcoming. I've seen James Martin buying his dinner there virtually in disguise

A friend recommended this chippy. Chips are not soggy. Pea fritters crispy. Food cooked to order. Best cod I've had for a while. Portions are generous, especially battered mushrooms. We usually feel "stuffed" after buying dinner here. Shop is spotlessly clean. Very good value. We have 2 chippies close to home neither match up to this one. (We used to use another one in same area as The Plaice, but standards declined and you got less for the money. Chip portions, particularly, became smaller).

A beautiful location, a splendid restaurant, friendly and attentive staff but sadly the food was somewhat disappointing. The vegetables were extremely limp (over cooked in fact). The homemade pie wasn’t up to par, the filling and gravy were both tasty and enjoyable, but the pie had spent too long under the pass. It was extremely hard and the pastry on the side and base of the pie impossible to cut with a knife….a disappointment.

This used to be a very rare and therefore special place. A tea/coffee shop with the coffee made in a separate kitchen. There was also an ice cream machine in the attached anteroom. This meant that unlike every other coffee shop whether a chain or an independent it had a unique USP, somewhere to have a quiet drink, breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea where you could have a chat with a friend or family. Unfortunately that has changed. It now has an incredibly loud buzzing from the ice cream freezer and the noise of the coffees being made right in the main area. The food is still lovely, the staff are friendly and helpful but it is now a noisy place just like all the rest. What a real shame.
