Arrived at 13.15 for a late lunch with a friend. The sandwich selection was very limited with lots of empty sections which had not been topped up. The queue for hot drinks was taking ages so I opted for the drinks machine. Of the four machines, one was not working at all and two had run out of milk. There was only one tillpoint open causing a long queue, and finally I had to be very selective with my cutlery because a lot of it was not properly clean. Such a pity because the views over Edinburgh are spectacular. I think next time I will try the café in the Catholic cathedral next door

Went mid afternoon for a late lunch but obviously were too late. No hot food, no scones. Opted for wedges of cake which were delicious. However the hot drinks station had its usual queue, my Earl Grey was the weakest I have ever had, and company's hot chocolate had frugal servings of cream and marshmallows. Service on drinks and cake bars was friendly but have yet to be served on the till by anyone who doesn't appear unfriendly, bored or disdainful.

One star for friendly staff and view but the food and coffee were abysmal. Luke warm coffees despite requesting extra hot and dried out egg mayo roll (which they exchanged) then dried out scone and lemon cake. We couldn't eat them..the cakes are cut and sat out under lifts so even if freshly baked that day will dry out very quickly..its not cheap either. Very poor standard from John Lewis. Won't be back.

This was our 1st visit to the store since it reopened. As we had travelled quite a distance we decided to visit The place to eat -as we always do when in store and have always found it good.. Understandably there was a wait for a space so we were given a pager to alert us as we walked around the store..no problem. we were called quite quickly but when we were given a menu there was hardly anything on it -a limited choice of sandwiches , most of which had eggs in some shape or form, 2 types of scone choice (fruit or plain) in the cream teas and the chelsea bun I had chosen, was hard ,stale and dry and looked nothing like a chelsea bun. A menu should be shown to customers before handing out the pager, to let folk know what exactly is available. Most annoying was the fact that when we eventually got walking around the new store layout , we saw another cafe within the John Lewis store that looked much better with lots of choice .Think we will go there next time. I know and appreciate there has to be a reduced menu but not the quality.

Having visited yesterday for the first time since lockdown, to have coffee with a friend. It took quite some time to load the nhs. app app even longer to get someone to take our order and a further wait for the coffee! As there were only a few tables occupied, there seemed to be a few staff members, so I'm not sure what the problem was?Glad to see there is another cafe in the store, next time......

I have been to this cafe before, none of my previous visits were particularly remarkable, not a fan of the industrially made cakes (I tried the carrot cake and the chocolate one) so this time I tried a scone, omg! What a disappointment, possibly the worse scone I have ever had, for sure the last in this cafe, I won't even bother to go back again even with the free coffee and cake voucher. Please change your cake suppliers!

Veredicto? What a disappointing experience. They have a ‘new’ cheese scone to replace the brick hard, dense ones they’ve had so many complaints about. But the new ones are just as bad—hard and tasteless. They took them back and replaced them with cakes-one was dry, the other oversweet! I’m not coming back. Why should I!! Edinburgh is full of wonderful coffee shops with genuine home-baking. The simple pleasure of a scone with coffee has become a pleasure no more! The scones were rock hard! On complaining, we were told that they and many other products were now being bought in, and of an inferior standard. We were offered cakes instead, which can at best be described as "average"! Apparently the chefs have been made redundant, so no more freshly baked scones or anything.

Shopping trip to Edinburgh. Decided to stop for a coffee in John Lewis store. First visit to the revamped 5th floor 'The Place to Eat'. Beautiful modern cafe, didn't feel like I was in a department store. Was greeted by young lady at doorway, felt welcomed. Only had a coffee and a scone with jam and cream, however really fresh and delicious. However the highlight of the visit was the panoramic views of Edinburgh, seen from the large windows, I had a window seat so sat there for nearly an hour. Selection of hot and cold food. Highly recommended.

Newly opened in April 2017 on the 5th floor of John Lewis store this appears at the first visit to be a larger space than the previous self-serve cafe. There’s a range of seating styles including comfy armchairs by the “library” area (you can browse a book whilst taking a load off your feet), tall stools, cushioned benches and everything in between. It all has a contemporary, bright feel and if you ever wondered where you could use giant lampshades here’s your answer. I'm not sure if the exposed ceiling showing ventilation shafts, etc is part of the look or part of the ongoing work in the store. As before some tables were proving very popular with their position alongside the almost floor to ceiling windows which look out towards the Forth however the view from almost anywhere in the room provides this anyway. You can even look down on the demolition of the buildings surrounding you. There’s a self-serve area for hot drink machines but elsewhere the format looked much the same - a few counters for a small selection of hot dishes, chillers with sandwiches, salads and cakes and the much maligned check-outs where your food can get cold (if it was hot to begin with) whilst you wait in a queue if it’s busy. We were lucky - on day two of opening and in the midst of ongoing works the store was quiet.Coffee and cake with a view - fine.

I was pleasantly surprised when I turned up today at the new-look John Lewis top-floor reataurant/café. With the demolition and rebuilding currently in progress of the tired old St James Centre, the John Lewis department store is also revamping itself. The old "The Place To Eat" was on the fourth floor, but it's now been reopened (first day today) on the fifth floor and... what a panoramic view! Apart from the crumbling remnants of the old St James Centre still in the process of demolition, there is a fantastic and clear view directly over the River (estuary) Forth and into 'The Kingdom of' Fife. The place has been modernised into a clean, fresh and modern almost-Bistro look. The food looked excellent although we stuck with a couple of the beautiful selection of cakes and pastries. The coffee was ok... not as good as I'd like but potable and our chosen delights, delicious. I'll be back there again next week and, hopefully, the attentiveness and friendliness of the staff on today's visit will not have been just an 'opening day wonder'... and will last. We shall see... Highly recommended.

Still the same miserable staff, the same confusing array of different service counters, the same slow service at each, the same slow service at the single pay point. My daughter and I both had Cullen Skink. When I saw the first one being ladled into the dish, I knew I had made a mistake, and I really ought to have changed my mind there and then. Instead of the "chowder" it was described, it was a very thin liquid with some pieces of smokie at the bottom. At just under £7 for a small bowl, this was a rip-off. The coffee was good and strong, but cold by the time we got through the obstacle course of paying for it.If you have the My John Lewis vouchers, it might be worthwhile but only for what the voucher lets you have.

We were in about 12.30 today and were pleasantly surprised that it was not so busy ,sat at a window seat we had the most magnificent views over the north of Edinburgh to The Forth Estuary and the Fife coastline .The menu has changed somewhat from our last visit as the carvery seems to have disappeared . If you happen to go when it's not busy, if you happen to get a decent seat with a view, if you happen to get a cleared table, and if you happen not to be waiting forever and a day to get your food - then Maybe ? - it might be a somewhere to consider - but looking at the range of other establishments on offer in the locality you could do better ( which does surprise me why JL P can't do better - but they have a captive audience of hungry shoppers ) We had had a busy day of trawling around shops when hubby suggested a break, being a warm day I thought an iced tea would be just the thing - turns out it's not tea it's syrup, the time it took to make it I could have left the building and went over to the Omni centre where I may have had better service ! ? _ when it arrived, it came in a plastic cup and the waitress was most concerned that the lid would not fit on , ( that did not concern me just wanted to sit down and have a cool drink ! ) she was not concerned about the short measure she had given - said it was supposed to be to that level , and that the ice had all melted by the time she handed it to me.Really felt disillusioned ( and yes infantile response but did feel saddened, that somewhere that I associate with good quality should be so shoddy ) I even took the plastic cup home - it had a measurement and line at the top saying 330ml and measured where I got it filled to - 250ml - next time I'll just find a bar with a refreshing tall glass of soda water and lime than bother going here Hubby did like his slice of ginger loaf which is the only reason they are getting an average rather than poor - No-body was unpleasant or shouted, and it was generally clean, but just did not do it for me alas.

John Lewis promote The Place to Eat as “somewhere to escape the crowds” however by the nature of the store’s popularity and its large scale this is unlikely to be the reality in our experience. On the contrary it is generally “mobbed” and getting a table is down to your ability to pounce on one as a previous customer stands up to depart. In these circumstances a table by the window to admire the cityscape is about as likely as finding a £10 note on Princes Street.Staff do their best to patrol the restaurant with trolleys clearing away the debris left behind by customers however at peak times they’re often swimming against the tide. It’s on the 4th floor of the store and has a café alongside which is aimed at those only looking for a coffee and cake but more often than not provides an overspill area for the self serve restaurant. There is another café on the 3rd floor. Both floors have toilets which are usually well maintained. The food is laid out in zones which seeks to minimise queues, as does the “greeter” by the entrance who will advise waiting times, and sometimes find you a table when it’s particularly busy.On a recent visit we had quiche with salad (£6.95 each) and a 187ml bottle of wine (£3.95 each). The quiche was “warm” rather than hot but tasted quite good anyway. As mentioned by others, there are separate tills where you pay once your food has been obtained which can lead to food getting cold whilst you wait. I have experienced ordering a “special of the day” which was brought to the table when it was ready and this worked well from that aspect. In summary, decent enough quality produce, prices in keeping with JLP (i.e. never particularly cheap) but try to avoid the obvious peak times if you want a more pleasant experience.

John Lewis must be taking advantage of customer loyalty, otherwise they would have done something about cold food by now. It is the only Place to Eat I know where all customers are channelled into a single paying point. Not only does the food get cold while you wait, but they use the till furthest from the serving counters, so that if your table is behind you, there is no room to go back past the queue and you have to walk round the restaurant after paying. For the prices, a self service restaurant should do better. On the other hand, if you only want a salad, or one of their excellent gateaux, then the place is probably fine.

It's a long time since we ate in John Lewis Edinburgh, but we needed some sustinance before a marathon domestic appliance shopping. The Place to Eat seems to rely very much on store customer loyalty, and that loyalty is not well repaid by the restaurant. I ordered a bacon roll, and by the time we had queued, waited for the coffee to be made, queued to pay, it was cold. To be fair, the young man at the till did go and get another one, but it was not much warmer. The bacon was tasty enough, but the roll was doughey. The coffee is good, but they need more machines, it takes too long to make especially when you have hot food, and gives the staff an excuse to stand there gossiping. In spite of the numbers of staff, there always seems to be queues. We came back later in the day after we had finished our shopping. Again queues. I had a bottle of fair trade orange juice. It tasted horrible, and when I read the label, it was from concentrate. It actually tasted as if it had been boiled. At the price (and the restaurant is certainly not "never undersold") there must be fairtrade not-from- concentrate juice available. The cakes were excellent, but at a price that cannot be justified by the service or environment.A very expensive view over to Fife.

The food was OK but in comparison to other John Lewis's the quality left a lot to be desired. We went for Saturday morning breakfast, hoping to beat the crowds. The Place to Eat was not busy, but when we ordered one of their breakfast specials we were told there was a 15 minute wait. It was not until we said that we would go elsewhere that we were told that we could have anything from the hotplate right away. Strange, as the specials were being assembled from the items on the hotplate. We chose a selection of the usual things, but by the time we had queued for our coffee and paid (at the till point most distant from the food counter) the breakfast was cold.OK, they would have done something had we complained, but that is not the point, the anticipation of eating makes you even more hungry and even more reluctant to wait for a replacement - remember Pavlov's dogs.

Decent little pub on the banks of the Forth and Newhaven Harbour. The pub does simple pub grub for a decent price. If the weather is nice you can sit out and have a beer looking across the harbour. For parents with young kids, there is a large soft play area so you can get a little peace and quiet.
