I can usually find at least one small thing, default, but the Sunday lunch we had was absolutely perfect. Thick cut a roast beef with Yorkshire, gravy, some had the fish, which looked amazing as well, and the lamb to looked great

Visited for a special celebration with 6 friends and chose from the small plate summer menu. At first we weren’t sure of how to combine our choices but we just went for a variety and they turned out to be perfect, every dish was a joy. The seabream was absolutely delicious, as were the home made lamb kofters and beef burgers. We all appreciated the skill shown in making each dish. The bar staff were lovely and couldn’t have been more helpful. Thank you Pilgrim

Managed to secure a table at long last, it does book up early! However it was worth the wait. Have driven past many many times but this was our first visit. Deceptively large inside and a really welcoming old style pub inside. Quiet when we got in. Service was relaxed but the right tempo for a lazy Sunday lunch. Food was some of the best we had tasted for a long time. Beef was exceptional. One slight critique would be that another veg would make it perfect. Desserts excellent. Can’t wait to go back !

Not sure which Pilgrim Pub the other reviewers ate at, but it certainly wasn’t the one I ate at last night, this was without a shadow of a doubt the worst pub meal I have ever eaten in my entire life! You’re greeted by this strange menu which consists of “snacks” and “specials” instead of starters and main courses. Eventually I decided to have the venison pie (£17) and asked the young lady what vegetables it came with, to be told that it didn’t come with any vegetables. OK, so can I order some vegetables separately? “We don’t do vegetables separately, you can order another vegetable main course though to go with the pie (another £8) !” OK, so I decided to pass on the vegetables and just have the venison pie. When the main course arrives, I have a tureen a bit bigger than a saucer which is filled with mashed potatoes at the bottom of which is some gravy! If there ever had been any venison in it, it had long since made it’s escape and bolted out over the fields! I have to say, I’m rapidly giving up on eating at local pubs now, they seem to be filled with “Masterchef wannabes” who insist on concocting these pretentious menus, which seem to have more to do with feeding their own egos, than producing good food for their customers! Next time I’ll go to an Ember Inn and get a proper meal!

Unfortunately we had a very bad experience at the Pilgrim in terms of the service and manners of the manager/owners. Our cut of beef was very fatty and far too rare for our liking, so was hoping the manager would offer an alternative option but instead said that is how the beef comes and no1 else has complained about it in the pub (making us feel like it was us being too fussy). And then when we said we won’t be paying for the dish, she just took the plate and stormed off into the kitchen, which was very unprofessional. Never quite experienced service like it, and won’t be returning!

My visit to the Pilgrim in November was almost faultless: excellent food, great service and a good atmosphere. Unfortunately this visit did not meet up to our expectations. Firstly the menu style had changed from a traditional balance of starters, main course etc to a confused and irritating avant garde, quirky menu where you choose a number of main dishes which are larger than tapas and only slightly smaller than a normal main course. Initially, nobody explained the procedure and we were surprised that the food was delivered in a haphazard way. I received both my dishes before one of our table had received any food. Fortunately, I received my mackerel just before the duck but this appeared to be more luck than judgement. In fairness to the Pilgrim, the food was delicious but the service was mediocre as the staff were overstretched. This style of service does not work in a cute olde pub as there were only 2 members of staff working the bar and serving food. We all felt that the trendy style was over complicated and staff intensive and it became annoying to have to get up to make requests for the basics. Unfortunately, during our meal, a group of other guests arrived and sat at the next table who had no consideration for other diners. The noise levels were extreme and completely unacceptable. As we conceded defeat on conversation, we felt it necessary to move in order to enjoy the end of our evening. The question is would I return? The answer: unlikely unless they reverted back to a sensible menu. Sorry Pilgrim, it doesn't work!

We arrived about 7 for a 7.30 booking on a Saturday. We'd not visited before. The welcome was friendly. The surrounding area and decor are what one would expect from a village & gastro pub. It was a summer evening and there was a group of people sitting near the the bar who were having a good time. Our table was in the dining area but very close to the bar and the noise level from the bar area was very loud. The summer menu is 'small plates' so we ordered a selection and apart from a mix up over one of the dishes we ordered (resolved by smiling and apologetic waiter) the service and food was good. The group of 4 happy, but loud, people departed, to be replaced by another couple of happy, but very loud groups at the bar. Had we been there for a drink, the noise level wouldn't have been an issue - great atmosphere; but for a family meal, when we wanted to chat and enjoy the food, the noise level was intrusive and degraded our experience. This isn't a complaint - it is fabulous that people are out, enjoying themselves in pubs now; but there is a mismatch between what constitiutes a comfortable noise level for diners, versus people who are out for a social drink and the layout of the venue can't accommodate both needs easily, and for this reason I have rated lower than perhaps the food deserved. (I've just read an article in today's news that says that 'more than half of the capital's food venues are too noisy to hold a conversation' - The Pilgrim is not alone!) If we go back I'll ask for a table away from the bar, and maybe avoid Saturday evenings.

It's very difficult to find somewhere that fulfils all the criteria for a good evening out with friends but, thankfully, we discovered the Pilgrim. Firstly, it's not a pretentious restaurant so don't expect a high level of attentive service BUT the food was imaginative, beautifully prepared and the end result was delicious. I am new to the area, and have been given a handful of places to try, but I stumbled across this gem while out driving getting to know the area. I have sampled various suggestions of Restaurants by the locals, but as we all have different tastes, I find a lot of Restaurants still use frozen chip and that basically puts me off (if there was a shortage of Potatoes I would get it). However, The Pilgrim is simple fresh fare. It is always tasty, its a lovely pub, lovely fireplace in the winter, warm and welcoming with really good food, always fresh food, pleasant service, best honeycomb ice-cream! Puddings were classic favourites - chocolate truffle cake, treacle tart and panne cotta - served with a twist. We were treated to a meal one lunchtime at The Pilgrim by a neighbour, none of us had ever been there before. Our summary would be excellent food, service and, in my case, beer. The menu is relatively limited but this does demonstrate that it is not a mass-catering or pub-chain operation. Food is freshly prepared to a very high standard and well presented. Service is attentive. Overall, it gives the impression of a village pub combined with an excellent restaurant. We all had the same starter of Rarebit which was incredibly tasty and beautifully served and then we had either the duck or beef as it was a sunday. I have never had such meltingly tender and flavoursome duck..cooked to perfection - juicy but not greasy. The beef was served beautifully pink and again was tender and flavoursome. The roast potatoes were crunchy which is a rare treat in pub sunday lunches. We had brought along our own birthday cake which sometimes can be frowned upon - not here. This pub quite literally has everything. Fantastic well cooked locally sourced food, excellent friendly service and the best staff about (particularly Brett the chef). I couldn't recommend it more highly for popping in for a snack or a meal with friends and family. One of the true gems of Buckinghamshire!

Friendly staff, good food, ok prices. Book in advance as not many tables and the locals support this pub so quite busy in the evening.

Staying at a local B&B so popped into the village pub for a pint and a meal. Freshly renovated, the venue itself is very welcoming as was the lovely lass behind the bar. Good selection of craft beers and friendly conversation with the locals preceded a lovely meal cooked by the owner/chef. Fresh produce, locally sourced, drives this pub's menu, a far cry from the dull and uninspired fare usually associated with a country pub. Give this one a try!

We said we would come back and we did. The weather was kind to us and we were able to walk. The place was buzzing with people enjoying a Friday night drink and relaxing. There was a great atmosphere and the food and service was excellent. Thank you again.Averil Wilkinson M. B.E.

We went to The Pilgrim for a meal last night and were delighted. There was a warm welcome and the menu was imaginative. We live in the village and have known the pub for years, but have not been for a long time. The food was delicious, the starters home made pate and the smoked salmon were equally good and a sensible size. We really enjoyed our main courses, beautifully cooked and attractively served. The wine was lovely and the meal was reasonably priced. Thank you for an enjoyable experience. We will be back.

We had decided to go out for meal rather late one evening and didn't think we would actually be able to find anywhere to eat but we managed to get a table here. It was lovely, had never been before even though we only live 10 minute drive away. Such a warm cosy pub with great food. Service was also great and everyone was very friendly and food arrived quickly. The only thing was there wasn't much choice on the menu but that's only a small minor as the food we did order was lovely. We all really enjoyed coming here as a last minute decision and hope to be back again soon.

Fairly new to the area and on recommendation I booked for a Saturday evening to go with friends. The friendly service and relaxed atmosphere matched with perfectly cooked food and I can honestly say I couldn't fault anything. Two of us had the chicken and two had the medium rare flat iron steak and all delicious, so I am sure we will be visiting again.

We called late on Mothers day morning and they found a table for four at the time we wanted to eat (4pm)A small friendly pub but Sunday lunch menu is rather limited. Not even a fish alternative to Roast. Just one vegitarian dish and they were not willing to put something together off menu.We chose this pub for th wide array of vegan and vegitarian offering on their webiste menue. There was no mention that sunday lunch menu consisted of Roast and one vegitarian meal only. The food was exellent apart from the Risoto (vegitarian offering) which was not cooked properly. Having said all that, we would go back for an eveing meal during the week.

The Pilgrim Pub in North Marston, is the gem of the village. The staff are just what I want - knowledgable, confident and friendly. The service was excellent and the food was prepared flawlessly by the owner/chef. The tomato soup, was homemade and simply delicious. The steak, which was organic, was cooked to perfection. The flavour and tenderness of the meat was the best I have ever tasted. We will definitely be returning.

We are a young couple in our early sixties and have been to The Pilgrim for dinner on a number of occasions as we live in a neighbouring village. I must say that we have always enjoyed our time here. The staff are very friendly and the menu is great. The owner prepares the meals and is a very good chef. The food is scrummy and there is a varied choice of meals on the menu. One of our favourite three pub-restaurants.

The food was delicious and the menu not too fussy. Staff very helpful and attentive. Even the home made beer was excellent as a taster... probably better at the start of a Sunday lunch,

Arranged to meet someone here for Sat lunch. Had been in the pub before for a quick drink and it looked very pleasant as a place to eat. Arrived shortly after 1pm and asked the person behind the bar if they had a table. Several were offered as pub was about half full. Ordered and paid for drinks then a few minutes later went back to view menu and order food. Girl behind bar said "you want to order to eat eat now?" and when I said I did she snatched the menu on the bar in front of me away before I could reach it and put it behind the bar out of reach which I thought a bit strange. Said she couldn't take my order as there may be a bit of a wait because they had a large party of 6 covers (!) that had just ordered. Whilst I thought this was a bit strange I said I didn't mind, wasn't in a rush and would wait. She said she would check with the kitchen and come over to us. After 10 mins of her completely ignoring us, doing important stuff like polishing glasses and putting them back on the shelves someone else visited the bar and was successful in placing a food order. A bit irritated by this point that she had completely ignored us, I enquired again when she would be able to take the order and she said she wouldn't be able to at all as the kitchen had told her they were too busy to take any more food orders this service. She hadn't bothered to tell us this, and had taken further orders in the meantime which I thought bizarre and rude. No apology, nothing, just "kitchen says no", so after 20 mins of sitting there we had to leave the drinks we had paid for on the table and go and search somewhere else out. Strikes me as a locals pub with service for those in the know. Probably a fine pub if you know the magic handshake, but a really appalling experience if you have the temerity walk in off the street looking for basic hospitality. Really don't like being treated like this and won't be back!

I love this little pub; traditional, full of character, friendly staff and great food. Sunday lunch is excellent and in the evening there is a classy menu with a good variety of choices ( often including a really beautiful risotto). Good selection of beers, ciders and wines by the glass too. Fairly priced and highly recommended for evenings and weekend "occasions".The drawback occurs when you want lunch and are presented with the evening menu where the starters aren't substantial enough but the mains are too big (and too expensive for the lunchtime pocket). There are bar snacks, but these really are tiny and not what is required! There is a gap here that needs addressing; a hearty soup of the day with a decent portion of bread, a ploughman's, homemade pie and chips, steak sandwiches... The Pilgrim needs reasonably priced and more substantial lunch options to hit all the buttons. I really hope the young couple in charge here - who are otherwise doing an excellent job - listen to this feedback as The Pilgrim has such potential but currently the lack of an affordable and tempting lunch menu lets it down.

We had a really excellent lunch at the Pilgrim last week. We were a large group of 20 with quite specific requirements: we wanted a set price buffet, some gluten free food and room to manoeuvre a wheelchair. The pub is normally closed for food on Tuesday lunch time but Nadia said she would open up for us and lay on sandwiches and salad. It turned out to be much more than that - really delicious and inventive and very generous . The tomatoes and beetroot must have been from their kitchen garden as they were so flavoursome. The ham likewise was particularly good. Service was efficient and friendly and the pub building itself has been very nicely decorated and feels very comfortable. Thanks all of you for a very enjoyable visit.
