We returned to the pig in the South Downs following holding our reception there last year. The service and little touches made our stay exceptional. Thank you for an amazing night, great food, drinks and service. The room upgrade was unexpected but a lovely treat for us both.

Based on the experience of the three of us who had dinner at the Pig last Saturday evening, it is overpriced, not good value and the service was slow (we waited 45 minutes to order drinks). I mentioned that the last time we were here one of us ordered a Mojito cocktail which was a very poor example of a fine cocktail. The lady said she was very sorry to hear that, went away and returned with a new complimentary cocktail, but it wasn't as we were charged £14 for it. The vegetable greens were inedible and were replaced, what happened to carrots & beans for example. Never mind the very poor lighting, we had to use a mobile phone light to read the menu and we could not read the bill properly but paid on the spot. All in all a very poor experience to which we we will not return!

What has happened to the Pig; I went for lunch this week, probably my 7th visit. I have noticed how the food has gradually declined over my last few visits, so disappointing, in fact I would go as far as to say that it is now very average and very expensive for what they now serve. The so called three times cooked chips were flabby and pretty tasteless and greasy, unlike previous visits, the fish was overcooked, the Tobacco onions, a favourite of mine, were so salty this time that we could not eat them. The service is, as always, charming but overwhelming when the restaurant is not too busy however when it is busy the staff seem to walk around without checking their tables so that it is almost impossible to catch their eye, and surely they could be trained not to interrupt when couples are in mid-conversation. It is really difficult to leave this review as I love the setting of the Pig and I have always had a warm welcome but this week I took a friend who had not previously been there who said that the food at the Crabshack in Worthing is twice as good and half the price and I have to say that sadly I agree.

Fantastic for celebrating an Anniversary. Lovely views atmosphere. A little pricey but very nice food. A shame about the service. We were asked if we wanted bread but they didnt return with any, we had to wave a different waiter over. My husband was given a dirty steak knife and he asked for mayo, which he never got. We were given fee deserts but felt at the top end off the market they should not be getting anything wrong.

Lovely surrounds and setting, with friendly staff. However the food is dissapointing, considering the price. We had the peppers and oregano yoghurt, which had no real care, just half a pepper roughly chopped up and thrown onto a plate. Some bland fish poppers, and lomo which promised pickles, but what you actually get is some raw veg which simingly had just been dipped, no real flavour. At £4.95 each dish we weren't expecting big portions, just a bit more care and love into the food. Mains were a similar story, just a little bland and overpriced for what you actually get. And again things just seemingly thrown together on a plate. The best part of the meal was certainly the fresh bread which was brought to the table, with the homemade herb oil and smokey salt was delicious. And nearly £100 for two people, we expected a bit more. The menu reads well but ultimately, very average.

A lovely lunchtime treat ! My son gave me a voucher for Mother's Day for myself and my daughter and we went with her two children after a visit to Arundel castle . The ambiance is so relaxing , the views are stunning and the food is excellent . The dishes are not your usual "run of the mill' which was refreshing and far more interesting . Our steaks were great value for money as were the deserts. The menu clearly caters for appropriate choices for the children too which was much appreciated ! The service was brilliant , nothing too much trouble , will definitely visit again!

Anniversary lunch did not disappoint - the service was wonderful from start to finish. We had a note to say it was our anniversary and the staff kept mentioning it and giving us well wishes - really lovely touch. The Grounds are beautiful and the kitchen garden is lovely to wander around. The food was absolutely divine a fairly simplistic menu but cooked to absolute perfection and the portions are pretty big too!

I brought my mum here for lunch, and what a great experience it was from the very first moment. Mum is immobile, and was so well looked after by the very attentive staff. The food was so good, most likely grown on-site as we are vegetarians. The ambience was perfect, and the dining area was buzzing as it was full. Even the view was lovely from the dining area looking out onto the South Downs. We couldn't fault it, and I will be back in July with my husband!

I came here for a late birthday lunch celebration for my friend today and had a lovely afternoon. There was a good amount of people in the restaurant but it is by far the best service my friend and I have seen - especially from the really kind lady in her late 50s that offered us bread before our mains arrived. Everyone we spoke to was genuinely happy to be there. Beautiful location & I couldn’t fault the food in any way (I had the pak choi risotto, and my friend really enjoyed her gnocchi). Whilst slightly on the more expensive side, you really get the value from the money you paid. Would highly recommend and will be back for dinner soon !

We came here for lunch for a special occasion. The food was excellent, the wine is expensive, service was good in the restaurant, but value for money at £90 per head, very questionable. The decor is dated but that is part of the charm of an old building.

There is no doubting that the formula operated by the Pig hotels works. There always busy and the food is generally good. However there is definitely a case of style over substance. The shabby chic decor is in some cases far more shabby than chic (both the first two chairs I sat on in the bar were broken and third was just uncomfortable). The service is very inconsistent, great in restaurant, woeful in the bar and reception. The bed rooms are equally variable, the stables wing being cold in winter, with the noisiest plumbing I’ve ever encountered. An overnight stay with dinner cost us £600 and for that money we expected better

My friend and I had the set lunch for her birthday. The starter was so small, it was more like a crudités! The bubble and squeak and venison main was ok but more like mash potato than bubble and squeak and the faggots just placed on top. No garnish or vegetables. All veg and salad etc are extra cost! Cheapest glass of wine £12! We didn’t have dessert or stay for coffee as felt a little ripped off.

Managed to get a last minute dinner reservation for a birthday - have visited several different Pig hotels and this building is one of the most impressive and typically well designed with a great atmosphere. However, the service is really the driver for giving this place only 3 stars. The menu is great and we love seeing the 25 mile local ethos, but staff didn’t have a particularly high-level of knowledge about different options which made the start of the meal quite disjointed, plus the pace of service wasn’t well managed with drinks taking much longer than the food. On several occasions we had to flag down staff to ask for water, glasses, plates / knives for our cheese sharing board, and had to remind them of wine which had been ordered but forgotten. On top of this, even for a special occasion, the prices and mark up on wine in particular are eye watering. Such a shame because the concept and atmosphere is let down by lack of attention to detail in service. Would love to visit again, but won’t be rushing back

We had a lovely two night stay in February. The hotel was in a very quiet area, the suggested walks are great and easy to navigate. Breakfast was delicious; a good selection of food on the buffet. We stayed in the Old Stable which wasn't too far from the main house, and we could park right outside. The room itself was spacious for two people.

As fairly regular local visitors we love the building and ambiance, plus very helpful and caring staff. However the soup starter was little short of cold and lacked substance. To give credit to the staff it was taken off the bill without quibble and deserts were also on the house in recognition which was appreciated. However, we would sooner have had everything spot on. It was an enjoyable evening with good food……but unfortunately not £95 per head good.

Made a big effort to travel down from Guildford to visit The Pig on 15th and check out the surrounding area . The Pig is off the beaten track and a mile down a single track road (beware the many Range Rovers who consider themselves as having the natural right of way!) - nicely situated with views and good car parking. We found a spot in a very busy car park early afternoon and wandered into the reception area to hopefully find a spot to have a cup of tea and cake - but unfortunately we were told that we could not bring our two small well behaved dogs into the establishment but could sit outside on the terrace - which we declined as it was -3 degrees. Very disappointed that we couldn’t be accommodated and surprised that dogs not welcome given it’s in the middle of the countryside a board suggesting walks around the area. Maybe it was naive not to have checked beforehand - anyway we decided to leave not wanting to leave dogs in an unattended car (as suggested) and managed to find a welcoming pub a couple of miles away to grab our tea/cake. (again having to give way to another Range Rover!)

We visited on 16th January. We were welcomed very warmly by the receptionist and were seated immediately in the bar for a drink before proceeding to the restaurant for our meal. The food was absolutely delicious and the wine which was made 100m from our table was perfect along side. Sam our waiter was amazing from the get go and clearly knows how to make each customers experience one to remember! We had a tour of the ‘walled garden’ which was gorgeous.
