We had a very pleasant and relaxing stay at the Pier House Hotel. We felt at home there and enjoyed the view of the harbor and the sea, as well as the pleasant and relaxed atmosphere in the beautifully appointed pub. The food at the hotel is very good, the service very friendly, and there are other good restaurants within walking distance, especially for seafood. Our room itself was a bit small, but clean and the bed comfortable. We appreciated the connection to the South West Coast Path and the relaxed and considerate tourists and guests who were staying at the hotel and on the path.

The manager Tamsyn was incredibly friendly and accommodating to a group of ten weary (and filthy) walkers after a long day's hike. I booked the 'superior' room at a premium price of £275 for one night. It was for family from Australia and I wanted them to have a lovely experience. However the state of the harbour is lamentable. The works being carried out make it feel more like a building site than a holiday destination. The hotel may not have much control over this but I would have respected them more and possibly used them again had I been informed at booking. What they do have control of is their own premises and their staff. Firstly they couldnt find my restaurant reservation. Then they found it but for the wrong time. The food was good but we waited 45 mins for coffee, reminded them and waited but it still didnt come. Then once in the room we were kept awake by much movement of furniture from downstairs. For £275 a night I expect there to be sufficient sound insulation between the two parts of the business. I was left embarrassed by having provided such a poor experience for my relatives. I would certainly not book you again and will spread my feedback locally to ensure no-one else makes the same mistake.

A great location in Charlestown though during our stay the view of the harbour was spoilt by the work going on to replace the lock gates. Car parked in the Rashleigh Arms, a short walk away. The staff are friendly and attentive and a special mention for Lilly who looked after us particularly well during dinner. The room is lovely with the special touches that others have mentioned - complementary cans of lager, dressing gowns, outdoor parkas to wear if it's raining or cold. The dinner is excellent. Breakfast is also excellent and fresh melon is available! Great place to stay.

My review is for the restaurant only. We didn’t stay at the hotel. We had dinner last night, followed by breakfast this morning. Overall, the food was great, but the morning service did lack slightly. We wanted to order something. That wasn’t on the menu, but they didn’t have the “avocado smash” for the dish available. That’s fine, these things happen, but it did seem like the lad that served us was inexperienced in how to deal with us asking if we could replace this in some way. Again, these things happen and certainly not his fault; more just a lack of training I’d imagine. Otherwise, thank you for a very pleasant couple of meals. The view from the restaurant was superb, and the location is ideal for a romantic getaway I’d say.

Extremely disappointed, for people with garlic allergies, the menu is not for you, too much garlic, the Sunday roast ( if you can call it that) consisted of sirloin, cooked on garlic, roast potatoes, again cooked with garlic, fatty pork, fatty lamb, yorkshire pud with the lamb, not the beef, weird. Why do restaurants have to have cauliflower cheese and not just plain cauliflower. The only thing my sister and I could eat was fish and chips, we wanted a proper roast, I'm afraid we will not be going back, the menu needs looking at as it was sadly lacking.

Great pub, located in a small harbour, which is a lovely place to visit. Tasty menu - we had the roast dinner, which was excellent. Plenty of food on your plate! Beef, homemade yorkshire pudding, roast pitatoes and a selection of veg to go with it. Only thing that was disappointing was the service, as our plates remained on our table until we decided to leave. They weren't cleared away when we'd finished our meals and we had to ask for a dessert menu, at which point they still weren't taken away - we had to put them on the empty table next to us and they stayed there until we left. Despite this, I would go back as the food was really great.

The Pier House is a must visit if you find yourself in Charlestown. The area and views are spectacular, but its when you go through the doors when you realise how great this pub really is. The team couldn't do enough for you, their attentiveness and professionalism was refreshing and made my stay that extra bit special. The room was immaculate and full of thoughtful personal touches, I especially liked the binoculars in the window. I definitely spent too much time watching the fisherman out at sea pulling in their nets. My evening meal was delicious, it only felt right having a surf n turf bufger due to my geography and found the crab on top absolutely delicious. Thanks again to the team for their warm hospitality, I will certainly be returning.

I've eaten at the Pier dozens of times over the last few decades. I was very disappointed yesterday when the fish and chips were almost inedible. The chips tasted old and solid, the fish batter was like a hard sheet and the fish itself was on the dry side and utterly bland to the extent I couldn't identify the fish. One of my fellow diners was likewise disappointed. At a cost of £21 for fish and chips expectations were high for something a delicious piece of succulent cod in an amazing batter. Sadly not the case. Management offered a refund but we declined. What we can't get back is the time we spent here.

We decided to book here for a birthday dinner for 16 guests. Everything was very good except one issue with the food. A lot of our guests went for the roast and all of them had issues with the roast potatoes. They just weren't cooked very well and when you pay over £20 per plate you expect hot tasty food. Sadly on this occasion that is why I dropped 1 point which I think is more than fair, even after explaining why we didn't like the potatoes and being told that the kitchen and management had been informed but no real resolution or apology. Instead we were brought a plate of surplus potatoes after we had finished the meal which felt like a bit of an afterthought. Staff were very friendly and great location

Called in the beautiful harbour side pub for food and drink. Initially bought the drinks at the bar while we chose the food. That was where the idyllic dream ended. Served by a lady called Tamsin who was clearly annoyed that customers had the cheek of wanting to be served while she was telling another worker some story, she couldn't have been ruder or more dismissive. I ended up paying top prices for the drinks. This included £6.30 for a cider that normally costs a little more than a fiver elsewhere. We skipped the food and went elsewhere in the village to eat, where there were a lot of excellent quality eateries, and the staff were pleased to serve us.

Booked a two day getaway for R & R through Booking.com. Stayed Saturday and Sunday nights on B&B basis. (1st & 2nd March) We checked in around 3pm and were taken to the room by friendly staff member. The room was introduced as a "Cabin" style room. At first we thought that it was quite small and very little room to move. Facilities were excellent and very clean and modern. Especially the bathroom. Again small but useable. Bedroom space was very different, tiny area, hanging space was at a premium. 3 shirts and the space was full. The bed was enclosed in a tight corner with only one access side, so exiting was difficult to say the least. I enquired about a bigger room and the extra cost to do so. I was informed that if someone did not show up I would be informed and the room would be offered. That unfortunately did not happen. I explained that my wife had limited mobility and found it difficult to enter and exit tight spaces but it appeared to fall on deaf ears. A follow up to say sorry no rooms were available might have helped us decide not to stay the second night. I think maybe it would have been better to book direct with the Hotel and the possibility of discussing room size etc. I thought for the money we paid Booking.com the room would have been more standard size. I get Genius discount with Booking.com so my assumption was completely wrong. We likened the room more to "Rabbit Hutch" more than "Cabin" For the price we paid I would consider the room expensive and more to be used as single occupancy rather than double. All other aspects of our stay were lovely, the staff, the public area's, food and drinks were all very good. The only other worry I have is parking ticket arriving at a later date. I asked at the time of check in if it was in order to park just up the road in the general Car Park and was told to give my Reg number to reception and that would be ok. On leaving the Car Park I noticed the "Have you paid an displayed" sign. We gave our details to a young lady service at the bar and she said she would enter it at reception on our room number (4). I checked later after returning from a walk and found it had not been and was done then but informed there would be a problem because the Car Park was not monitored. I hope that statement was correct!

Beautiful place, excellent helpful staff, food and drink expensive. The only criticism is the disabled access. Had to put on coats and outside clothing to get from the room to the front of house. Outside access lighting also poor.

The location is good. The place is clean and there's plenty of seating inside and out. The food is quite expensive but of good quality. Sadly we weren't given the specials menu with the other one (we were given it along with the dessert menu afterwards and saw something on there we wish we'd known was available for the mains). They were also out of one of the sharing platters we wanted. The service was okay. The drinks were ridiculously priced. 2 large G&Ts were £28!! That's even more expensive than London and we were disappointed they didn't have a bar menu so we could see this price gouging - we would have chosen something less extortionate that way.

Friendly staff, however service is erratic and random. Several dishes had sold out even at 7:30pm on a Tuesday evening. Pretty much none of the (over-priced) main courses came with vegetables and incredibly there were no vegetables as sides (other than three types of chips)! Only option was a salad which looked as if it had been purchased from Tesco several days previously. This is a great location and has great potential if only they could improve the menu, the service, the pricing and pretty much the whole experience!

Wow most overpriced bar I’ve ever been in. £28 for 2 Gin and Tonics? Cost more than the food. They didn’t give us the specials menu which was much more appealing than the regular menu. Only one vegan option. Hummus a bit dry. Padron peppers lacked seasoning and should have been more blistered. Lovely decor, clean toilets and friendly waiting staff but the prices are a disgrace. We aren’t tourists as we live in Cornwall but even if we were, I would not have visited had I known I was about to be ripped off. The place isn’t all that, now the museum has closed it’s just a place where a tv show was once filmed. Antique shop is worth a visit though.

A lovely friendly venue but unfortunately will not be visiting as often as prices have gone up. I was charged £15.40 for 2 cappuccinos and 2 small Diet Coke for my grandchildren.

Popped in here for a cream tea, deliciously warm scones with jam and clotted cream, a real treat. Very reasonably priced. The staff were lovely, very friendly, would definitely recommend.

The Tolcarne Inn is a pub in Newlyn, Cornwall, just outside of Penzance. I happened to be on my way to watch a film about an Irish architect, when I stopped in the Tolcarne Inn for lunch. Suspicious of gastro pubs, ranging from uppity to down-facing. Ladies were pleasant, very quiet clientele, like a village pub. I sat by the window with my book about the cognitive decline of Joe Biden, but when the food came, I forgot about Uncle Joe entirely. I ordered turbot with hollandaise sauce and asparagus, a side of boiled “Cornish dailies” and a white Americano. A warning about “small plates”. Quite, quite. You could have lost the fish in the wash, the two asparagus were stolen from a fisher-maid’s garden, the hollaindaise failed to mask the paltry dimensions. The bowl of potatoes, lathered in butter and dill, was substantial, boasting my fish like a thin man wearing large clothes. (£25 for the lot. Suspicious? I thought so too.) After the first mouthful, I was shocked. I chewed slowly, methodically, the flavours informing my tongue. The turbot was cooked with rock salt; the flesh keeps shape, easy to pull apart. The hollandaise has none of that wiry flavour; it’s smooth, not unlike a Bailey’s. Asparagus are tender, simple. Boiled “Cornish dailies” - new potatoes - are tender too. Dill and butter not overpowering. When you are filled with shock during a meal, this usually comes from the waitress dropping your plate, or some punter attacking the bar, but rarely the food. My modest meal shocked me. I forgot about Joe Biden, remembering my youth. Perfect fresh fish - prepared differently in Bermuda, but the same sensation. The outside world vanishes. Flawless food. Tourists ambling in and out of the pub, acting like the Inn was just another watering hole. No, no, no. My little turbot and asparagus and potatoes forced me back into the shell of my youth, I thought about people thinking about youth; what form it took, and so on. Walker is in shock, on the verge of tears. Now, at this point, you reach out and touch your partner’s hand, but I was alone. So the waitress came over and asked, “Is your food alright?” Because I’m thinking about time and space, prompted by the excellent food, I look up slowly, like a post-operative patient jigged back to life. “It’s flawless,” I said. “Suspiciously flawless,” I added. She smiles, walks away. Meanwhile another customer - frothy, biscuit-shirted - has the audacity to say their beer is “a bit frothy” when archangels and medcine men craft in the kitchen like so many Cornish saints. A chef peers out of the kitchen, catching my eye. A smug smile on his face. “Yes, you are God,” I want to say; I want to sing this from Newlyn to Planet Neptune.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch here. I had roast lamb and my wife had roast beef, very very tasty. For dessert I opted for the superb bread and butter pudding with clotted cream whilst my wife savoured the " St. Buryan Mess" which was delicious. The staff were lovely and our three dogs were welcome. All in all super pub food in a great location.
