Amazing location, pub bar, restaurant and views extremely hard to better. Food needs a radical upgrade, prawn cocktail £16? Prawns out of a bag from Iceland not these days at that price. Duck breast tough as old boots, vegetables thrown at the plate from a great height, poor presentation. Lobster and prawn liquinine, micro waved for £32? Someone needs to get a grip in the kitchen!

We've been coming to the Pickwick for a number of years and I genuinely believe it might actually be my favourite restaurant in the entire country...probably the world...

My review refers only to the restaurant, the location and building promised so much it was a shame about the food, the meat was overcooked and the onion rings were so burnt that they shattered if you tried to cut them, some of the veg was undercooked also, we complained to the waitress and she said that she would speak to the chef, the chef didn't respond and we were asked to pay the bill in full, we will not return

Really looked forward to going here for ages because of views on facebook but can’t sit out the back only if eating can only sit out front no views disappointed ☹️

Stopped for lunch. Shared a £12 beetroot humous sandwich with my wife - see photo attached. Had it been a gourmet sandwich maybe ok but it was nothing special for £12 bit of a rip off. Told me it came with chips - that’s what the crisps are!!!! Half the sandwich (soft bap roll I have eaten).

Amazing plated roast dinner, one of the best I have eaten in a long time, sometimes the dessert can be a let down after a great roast but on this occasion the dessert was amazing. Great staff, chilled and very happy. You will never get bored of the view of the Camel estuary. Might not be the cheapest roast but certainly the quality is worth every penny.

This, has been an excellent stay, with amazing views of the River Camel and out to the Doom Bar between Padstow and Rock. The room was very spacious with its own balcony and had a superb restaurant with the WOW factor of a view. It is set half a mile outside the village of St Issey, just 5 miles from Padstow. The staff were excellent too

Had a great meal with the family everyone happy with meals If I was to pick at anything an extra scallop on my starter would have been great but very impressive, they had a big function and it did not effect our service.

We loved our romantic escape to the Pickwick Inn. A true hidden gem! Our room was lovely, bright and large with fab views to Padstow over the fields. Our bathroom was also fab with a huge bath and shower. Food at Oliver's was also very good, not spectacular, but good all the same. The pub itself looks very cosy indeed. Things to note: You need a car as this is a remote location. Bathroom supplies are just eco soap bars and while ok, could be done better with eco refillable pumps. All in all, would highly recommend for that naughty escape!

Absolutely beautiful from the moment we walked in. A lovely welcome from behind the bar from an older gentleman. The waitress was lovely and freindly and gave us some information on things to do locally! The food is out of this world ! Lovely experience

Popped in after a long coastal walk. Welcoming, dog friendly, comfortable. We had pie & lamb from the special board. Both meals were delicious. Just wish I had asked for mint sauce with my lamb. Would return.

Great setting for a nice meal. We had Sunday lunch and then went back for an evening meal later in the week. Sunday lunch was amazing quality and the 5 kids across 2 families were welcomed. A couple of us had steaks in the revisit which were great quality, but overcooked by 45 seconds. Would defo recommend. Little playground for kids to keep them entertained for a 30 mins

After a long, arduous journey from the North, where better to fill our tired tummies than the Pickwick Inn. As a literature student, I was drawn to the name of the restaurant / pub and on entering the establishment, I loved the decor. Since it was Sunday - we all chose the Sunday lunch and my veggie mother said, 'it was the best nut roast she'd ever had!' It was lovely being greeted by local Cornish barman / owner and the choice was drinks was superb. The beef was beautiful and the Yorkshire pudding was the size of a bin lid!! Maybe that's an exaggeration, but it was big! I would have loved to have tried the dessert menu, but we were are fit to bursting at the end of our meal. Delicious Cornish food - would recommed!

We have been dining at the pickwick for years and often more than once a week. We have never had a bad meal until this week, 31/7/2024. The fish and chips were simply awful. Chips were over cooked and greasy, the fish batter was also greasy. The child's chicken gougons were also over cooked, we couldn't even cut them. Sorry to say we have cancelled our table for tonight.

Wow what a view from the rooms amazing. I spent 2 nights looking at the view and watching the sparrows and birds. Lovely rooms best I have seen. Breakfast was lovely and tasty the Mackerel was lovely. Couple of issues though the bed is not a king size but 2 put together need to fix that. I found the pillows hard and slept ok first night better second using a pillow and cushion. Possibly provide options for softer pillows I had neck pain first night. Worth the money though as best room I have stayed in.

We spent 2 nights here at the end of May and found it to be quite disappointing. The room itself was spacious as was the bathroom but it lacked provisions. We stayed in a boutique ‘dog friendly’ room which cost £200 per night including a breakfast plus £10 for the dog. There were no provisions for the dog at all so we weren’t sure what we had paid £10 for. Unfortunately for us, having our little dog meant that we were not allowed to eat in the lovely contemporary restaurant with stunning views over the estuary, we had to eat in the very dark pub. Having a dog also meant we we not allowed to sit around the pool and also, from reading the finer details at check in, we were very surprised to learn that the pool was only open 9-5 therefore felt this was too limited as had the weather been warm and sunny, we would have definitely wanted to have used the pool due to the balcony being north facing and shaded. The breakfast, if you didn’t want a full English was quite underwhelming and very limited. It would be fair to say that our experience would have been better had we been there without our dog so we wont be returning to The Pickwick Inn.

Took my mum, stepdad and aunty here when they came down for the weekend, wanted somewhere with character and great food so it’s a memorable treat and boy did the Pickeick Inn deliver, the pub has so much to admire with its Charles Dickens interior, photographs and books and the food at Olivers Restaurant was superb, we all loved the food and the staff were really friendly and helpful, a true discovery and highly recommended

When the food came our moussaka was was served to the table in the dish straight out of the oven so was 190C. Annoyingly they put it down within easy reaching distance of our 2 year old who immediately grabbed it and now has burns on his hand. They also put a metal pot full of scalding gravy on the kids meal plate, I assume so he could pour it all over his face and burn that too! Someone then lit a bbq in the restaurant which didn’t set the fire alarm off but did make guests try and open the sliding doors, unfortunately the doors were all locked so we had to sit and eat the moussaka which must have been made by the work experience kid in a smoke filled room. Very very expensive and terrible quality. Our little one did enjoy his sausage once he’d stopped screaming. The beer was good.

A pub of two halves. The bar is old school, banquettes, wagon wheels and dark brown varnish and the restaurant is all plate glass and modern with stunning views. Shame no crisps or other bar nibbles but, without us saying anything, the young lady serving arranged for a bowl of deep fried potato skins ! Top marks!

What a lovely venue and a peaceful location. Tasty food but mediocre service and everything had to be ordered at the bar. The old-fashioned pub where we had to sit with the dog was like a parallel universe to the modern restaurant which had stunning views and where the service seemed to be more focused.

Just had a battered sausage & chips which was cooked fresh. It was delicious & a great portion size too. I had my 6 year old with me who said he was cold & one of the guys working there heard this & came out & plugged in a portable heater for him which was a really nice touch. Thanks I will be back & I highly recommend here👍

The Tolcarne Inn is a pub in Newlyn, Cornwall, just outside of Penzance. I happened to be on my way to watch a film about an Irish architect, when I stopped in the Tolcarne Inn for lunch. Suspicious of gastro pubs, ranging from uppity to down-facing. Ladies were pleasant, very quiet clientele, like a village pub. I sat by the window with my book about the cognitive decline of Joe Biden, but when the food came, I forgot about Uncle Joe entirely. I ordered turbot with hollandaise sauce and asparagus, a side of boiled “Cornish dailies” and a white Americano. A warning about “small plates”. Quite, quite. You could have lost the fish in the wash, the two asparagus were stolen from a fisher-maid’s garden, the hollaindaise failed to mask the paltry dimensions. The bowl of potatoes, lathered in butter and dill, was substantial, boasting my fish like a thin man wearing large clothes. (£25 for the lot. Suspicious? I thought so too.) After the first mouthful, I was shocked. I chewed slowly, methodically, the flavours informing my tongue. The turbot was cooked with rock salt; the flesh keeps shape, easy to pull apart. The hollandaise has none of that wiry flavour; it’s smooth, not unlike a Bailey’s. Asparagus are tender, simple. Boiled “Cornish dailies” - new potatoes - are tender too. Dill and butter not overpowering. When you are filled with shock during a meal, this usually comes from the waitress dropping your plate, or some punter attacking the bar, but rarely the food. My modest meal shocked me. I forgot about Joe Biden, remembering my youth. Perfect fresh fish - prepared differently in Bermuda, but the same sensation. The outside world vanishes. Flawless food. Tourists ambling in and out of the pub, acting like the Inn was just another watering hole. No, no, no. My little turbot and asparagus and potatoes forced me back into the shell of my youth, I thought about people thinking about youth; what form it took, and so on. Walker is in shock, on the verge of tears. Now, at this point, you reach out and touch your partner’s hand, but I was alone. So the waitress came over and asked, “Is your food alright?” Because I’m thinking about time and space, prompted by the excellent food, I look up slowly, like a post-operative patient jigged back to life. “It’s flawless,” I said. “Suspiciously flawless,” I added. She smiles, walks away. Meanwhile another customer - frothy, biscuit-shirted - has the audacity to say their beer is “a bit frothy” when archangels and medcine men craft in the kitchen like so many Cornish saints. A chef peers out of the kitchen, catching my eye. A smug smile on his face. “Yes, you are God,” I want to say; I want to sing this from Newlyn to Planet Neptune.
