The Phoenix in Tamworth

We visited yesterday for the first time, and decided to have lunch. It was really busy. I ordered gammon, egg and chips, which was supposed to come with onion rings, but there wasn't any, and no explanation as to why I didn't get them. The egg was hard boiled rather than fried, surely it's supposed to be runny... My partner ordered fish and chips, was under seasoned and batter was soggy. No one came to ask if our meals were OK, so not sure we would visit again. However the bar staff were friendly, so no complaints there.

Came into today served by James absolutely brilliant customer service. Welcoming friendly efficient. Definitely be back.

Great burger, the chips were super hot, good music, good service and the pint of neck oil slipped down a treat. Thanks all.

If you are ever in the town centre pop into this great pub. Top notch beers good food and very friendly staff. Highly recommended

Great pub this one, staff very friendly, good mix of clientele, food very nice, better than Spoons. I do pop in The Phoenix from time to time and find if ideal for a quick cocktail, real ale drinkers are also catered for plus the usual Lagers etc. Prices are very reasonable for both beers and food with a varied menu to hand, always people in there having food plus regulars having a beer. Disabled people are catered for by way of slopes, which are wide, and fabulous table service by the staff( staff do table service for all food) In conclusion The Phoenix is a great pub in a great location, I give it five stars

I ordered a large Chardonnay which was nicely chilled an of a pleasant flavour. I chose fish, chips and mushy peas which came with a generous pot of tartare sauce. The meal was hot and service was prompt and cheerful. The fish was delicious. It was flaky and of an excellent texture and the batter was crisp and pale golden brown in colour. The chips were tasty and the mushy peas among the best I have ever had. For dessert I chose sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. The pudding was certainly not sticky and was spiced which I found most odd and not at all pleasant. The whole was topped by a fairly tasteless, presumably, toffee sauce. I have to say, though, that the Phoenix is a very good town centre pub.

Met up with a couple of friends for lunch. We went for the 5 small plates the food was incredible. The staff were really nice didn’t have to wait long. Definitely recommend.

I have been coming to this pub for a long time and even as the staff change (albeit the Management have been their since the 70s I think😂) You are always gaurunteed a warm welcome, decent drinks at a good price. 🍻🍻

Been going here for a few years, meals usually good. Not sure what happened, but on Wednesday we went for a meal around 7pm,pub was quiet, not many in. Ordered mixed grill and a gammon meal. Peas were dried out, steak inedible, too chewy, each bite needed ten minutes to chew each bite… so left the rest of it. The sausage seemed overcooked and was very hard, leftover from yesterday? Tiny pineapple ring, did not know they came that small. The gammon on the gammon meal was very thin too. The chips were the only thing that seemed well cooked. Nobody came during meal and asked if eberything was ok, and it took a long while for anybody to collect the plates, and when they did, they did not ask if we enjoyed it or not, maybe they could tell from our expressions? Both of us had the feeling we would not come back there for a meal again, at least for a long while.

When with family for evening meal to celebrate a birthday, the staff were very cheerful , gave us table service as we were a big party, food arrived quickly and was hot, would like to say thank you to George and Claire for looking after us you made the evening relaxed and very enjoyable.

Came in Friday had drinks with two of my mates. Warm welcome brilliant selection of ales and spirits would highly recommend a visit.

Popped in for a quick drink on the way home,, good pint of pedigree, that good I had another and soon food, great staff and good food.

I've visited The Phoenix on multiple occasions with both friends and family. The food is really good quality and the service has always been amazing (especially Lee). If you're looking for somewhere to go for breakfast, lunch or dinner I would 100% recommend.

Claire served us at the bar and she was brilliant. Really funny and helpful. We'd be back just for her alone!

I came here with my family and we did not feel safe at all in this place. In comparison to most places around the town centre.We came in and wasn’t acknowledged at the door, tables were sticky and had salt remaining from previous customer(s). The prices are decent but the atmosphere is severely lacking with customers and staff not being very welcoming we swiftly left to go elsewhere

So glad to be able to return to the phoenix after lockdown. Great food, great service, great setup. Well done Marcus and team.

Service Excellence, this place is everything we regularly dine here on a Saturday daytime while our daughter dance so we choose the venue for our Christmas meal decorations, the table decorations as well as the extra disco lights they put up for the girls. The food was out standing and the service we was given by Luke and Mark was exceptional warm friendly we couldn't have asked for more. Marcus was working the bar and as always friendly on on the ball. Lee and Charlotte worked the kitchen and all from the booking to the day were so good at communicating with us. The Phoenix is one of my favourite places to grab food and a drink whilst visiting Tamworth.The pub is really welcoming and the staff are always friendly. The service is always very high. The pub looks especially nice this time of year with the Christmas decorations etc.

We went in for a bite to eat after work, got to say the food is delicious, especially the bbq wings! we had a couple of planks great value for money and out very quickly. Pub still looks great after it’s refurbishment.Our favourite pub in town centre

I decided to grab a meal while having a beer on Wednesday night. There was a fair few customers drinking & eating yet my meal came out in 15 minutes, which In my opinion is very good service. The food is traditional pub grub but was cooked well & served piping hot. You can’t beat £8 for a double burger with a pint included. I will be taking my family here for a meal very soon. Five stars all round for the staff & food.

Ordered steak and chips served chewing rubber.Asked staff about portion of steak and not happy at all with response bad customer service.

Waited a hour for 2 chicken burger which come out looking like they'd had a cycle through a washing machine.The chips for frozen and were bareable.The salad if you can call it that was brown, lovely not.And the staff just plain rude.No apology, and not exactly cheap food.Will not be returning!!

After wandering around Tamworth in search of a decent lunch and faced with many places not serving lunches, we arrived at the Phoenix. The staff were pleasant enough which is more than can be said for the food. The meals were hot but lettuce on a hot plate is barely edible and the accompanying dishes were hard to identify. We had to ask for the table to be cleaned too. Not an experience I care to repeat.

Well kept beer at amazingly low price; you still get change from a fiver when you buy two pints. The snack we had was tasty and good value. Service was friendly and professional. A good example of its genre.

Lovely pub, staff are without exception friendly, good range of draught and cask ales and ciders. What let’s it down is it’s inability to open at the advertised times, anything from 5-10 minutes to a full hour, is quite common. It has as such garnered a reputation around Tamworth because of this lack of punctuality. Shame.

Went to the Phoenix for lunch, had a jacket potato and salad each, really tasty, washed down with a couple of pints of real ale,very nice & well kept too, staff friendly and knowledgeable Will be calling on again to sample the 6 real ciders &6real ales .

Nearly every Saturday afternoon me and my boyfriend visit here for drinks and at times food We like to drink peroni when it's on tap in a bar as it's so much fresher. The staff are very friendly and helpful, very accommodating. In particular I have to mention Marcus (bar tender) even when the bar is busy he always acknowledges customers who are waiting to be served, hes always friendly and very helpful.

We both chose a jacket potato with cheese and coleslaw and side salad,huge platefulls and we could only manage half.good quality and at a reasonable price ,came with a soft drink or upgraded to a alcoholic drink was just an extra £1. Clean pub and very clean toilets. Will deffinatly go again

On my visit we family on having a meal we the in laws the stake my mother in law had was burnt on one side but the other side was ok . As the stake was coverd we chips on cutting it she nearly chocked and bar man said well it looks ok to me there is a difference between burnt and well done so please if your staff knows how the food looks right or not to the table i no it gets busy in there and it was busy there no need for the barman to say it looks ok when the customer comes first with there rights. Cause at the end of the day its the customer that brings in the wages so hoping that the next meal is ok next time we visit as its a nice place to meet nice bar staff that do talk to you at the bar and not say nothing like other places.

Adam was such a fantastic bar man. Me and my friends had many drinks, meals,(including deserts) and we had fantastic service! Didn't even need to go to the bar!

Taken an hour to come mother in law had a stake and it came out just well done but on her first cut was ok but the second cut she said this isent nice and before she could spit it out it got lodged in her throat and i had to give her many belts on her back as id of given her high neck manoeuvre cause she was lodged in a corner seat staff just looked in shock not even coming to help me one masive belt and colour came back as meat was out on another plate shot out no staff was botherd . Not impressed at all the stake was sent back and the middle ages bar man said you said well done theres a difference of well done in a case on it taken four people to pull it apart and still was hole so no not impressed at all .

We had a works Christmas meal here in December and it was lovely, the burgers are not only good value but the portion size is very generous. The selection of drinks of the bar is enormous took me 15 minutes to decide what to have. Very busy in there with not a lot of space for diners so if your going I would book in advance

Lovely cosy pub right in the middle of the town, great prices and selection. Lots of flavours of gin to try I had the Parma violet. There are so many drinks to choose from my partner couldn’t make his mind up. The burgers are impressive and they have good deals on. My only criticism is the attitude of the staff, some don’t seem to be bothered and it’s like they don’t want to be there. Hardly any smiles and positivity really did ruin the mood slightly

18 of went for our Xmas night out recently and we could not fault anything the food and the service was great. Well done to Marcus and the team. Some of my work colleagues had never visited the Pheonix before and they were full of praise for the evening.

We came here for a late lunch. They do a good chicken wrap and drink deal. Barman brought our pots of tea to our table. Nice hot food and good atmosphere.

I have been here twice now on my two visits to this charming town. The pub has been refurbished and is very cozy and inviting. The staff are lovely and cannot do enough for you and the food is very tasty and filling. Shall go again!

Called in here for breakfast with my sister and daughter on a Saturday morning. We had the traditional breakfast at £2.99 with tea and daughter had the breakfast with a hot chocolate. The breakfast was nice, hot and came fairly quick. The tea was lovely (I can be fussy with tea!!). Service was good from both the bar tender and the waiter. Would go back to try the evening meal next time i'm visiting family.

food was good considering we only paid £10 for a 3 course Christmas turkey lunch, with crackers. service was very slow. I would go back if I wanted a cheap meal.

Sobresaliente en el menú fue con una selección de huevos o piña la persona que tomó la orden dice que no pineapple. Pedí pasta con pollo y una cremosa salsa de queso. Cuando llegó era repugnante fue ni una salsa y todo era como si el queso había sido derretido y el pollo y la pasta en sacudidas Fue conjeled había un par de cucharadas y lo dejó. Nunca he hecho una comida en mi vida. El resto de las comidas de mi mesa ordenados eran pobres, que decidimos comer en otro lugar nuestros desiertos.

Cuando llegamos había comida en el bar, entre este era unos trozos de pollo. Pedimos la misma comida y creo que estas piezas recalentadas y las ponen sobre residuos de los platos. Dejamos la mayor parte de nuestros alimentos y a la izquierda. Nunca volveremos aquí de nuevo.

Llegamos aproximadamente a las 2:30 el jueves por la tarde después de una visita al castillo. Ninguna de las mesas parecían haber sido liquidados por algún tiempo, así que solicitó asistencia para limpiar la mesa para nosotros, pero me dijeron que no iba a tomar un tiempo, pedimos una bandeja y equipos de limpieza y procedió a hacer el trabajo nosotros mismos! ! !

No clean tables despite the inside being empty we cleared and wiped our own table due to a delivery we were told food would be at least 40mins as staff were putting the delivery away. the bar was stacked high with dirty glasses and there was only one member of staff serving. we put our order in to be told there was no onions rings and our cocktail was not available as they had no ingredients to make it. food was poorly presented and not as per the menu all in all a very disappointing experience. very However Oliver was patient and helpful trying his best to deal with a very busy bar on his own.

Has the look of a Weatherspoons and similar menu. Liked the selection of small dishes on a plank- yes, a plank not a board. Quick service, good value.

This is a large, busy restaurant in the centre of town. It has a really extensive menu and does a wide range of breakfast items as well as lunches and foods through the day. We struggled to get a table as it was packed. It has a good range of ales and beers so if this is what you are seeking it is worth trying. Prices are average for a pub restaurant of its kind. Food was fine and service reasonably fast considering how busy it was.

came here with friends after the last visit was brilliant this was awful one star is being generous. came for just drinks both of us ordered hot drinks while we looked at the menu for lunch but we waited 45 mins for 2 coffees still nothing came went to ask how long and was told by the lady when i get chance . I'm busy. total dis respect for the customer so we cut our losses and left i would advise people to avoid at all cost

Went with friends today, had the chicken wrap and chips, food was yummy, drink was cold and the salad was fresh. Can't say much more than that! Good service, good food, would go again.

Popped into The Phoenix for Sunday lunch. My Turkey was ok even though it was 2 little slices but the husbands beef was more fat and gristle than actual meat, so quite poor food to be honest. No point complaining as no one bothered to ask how our meal was, and if a chef could send out the fatty rubbish on my husbands plate then obviously there wasn't any pride in what they were serving

Went in this pub/restaurant with my daughter and 3 grandchildren for a lunch time snack. Ordered the all day breakfast, 2 x chicken and chips, fish & chips and pizza. Bit of a wait for the food to arrive (20 minutes) but it was all cooked very well and was tasty. The atmosphere was rather subdued with music being shown on a number of big screen T.V's - but this was not too loud. Overall I would say that the venue was average in the quality of food but it sufficed for 5 hungry people.

Visited on Saturday afternoon about 4 with husband, drinks service was quick. Ordered 2 chicken BBQ melts from 2 for £8 I think. Waited ages but was tasty when arrived was a small portion but tasty.

Popped in for a meal and a couple of drinks with my husband on a Friday night. I drank wine and he drank Hobgoblin.To eat, I had fish and chips and hubby had cheesy Cumberland pie. Both meals were piping hot, looked really nice, were delicious - and cost only £7.99 for both!!Bar staff and waitress were really pleasant. Waitress came to check everything was ok during the meal and she cleared our empty plates promptly. The the barman said goodbye on our way out. Both made us feel valued. Nice atmosphere too. Will definitely be back soon!

The last 2 times I have been to this pub I have had to wait over half an hour for food, the first time I didn't mind as much as it was quite busy being a Saturday lunch time but the second time there was hardly anybody in there. I do quiet enjoy the food but do not understand what the long wait is all about. They also do not offer a great range of food to chose from for people avoiding gluten!

Came here with partner and ordered from the 2 meals for £8.. service was really good and food was top notch. so impressed by the experiance here, I will making a quick return. Great Value for money either, and great location.

We ordered at 8.45pm and they close kitchen at 9. Staff (1 bar 1 kitchen ) probably felt they would be going home early before we arrived (party of 5)Bar service was slow but friendly.Food service very slow (40mins) We're not asked if everything was ok and table was not cleared when we finished or before we left.The food was very good value for money as long as you stick to the daily offers or deals and was very nice.Tuesday burger night £5.99 for a choice of 4 burgers 8oz with a drunk.

Was shopping in Tamworth for the day and popped for a burger and a pint seems like a well used place found some were to sit and ordered my food a small wait about 15mins had 6oz classic burger comes with a small bowl of chips enjoyed the food

Food was okay but evening spoilt by agressive drunk woman customer- at 7pm! She should have been ejected but the solitary young girl on the bar looked as scared as we were; not suitable for eating with young family.

I really do not know where to begin with this review, as I have got a few great points to make about The Phoenix, but then, a few not so great points to make too. I will spit each aspect up for you:1. First of all, WHAT Vietnamese food? Don't make me laugh!2. Value for money - can't beat it, it definitely is the best thing about this pub-restaurant. Two pints for under a just under a fiver - brilliant! The value for food was relatively cheap too and the menu featured some meal deals.3. The food itself - my views are mixed. My partner ordered this double Quorn burger and he was very satisfied and gave it a 4* rating. I ordered some sort of spinach and cheese quiche with pine nuts and it did indeed look like a massive bogey! However, it did taste nice, but there was not enough of it - there was far more salad and chips in comparison and the quiche and chips were not overly hot, maybe warm-ish. I didn't expect much from the prices but it is your average, from-frozen pub grub, nothing special. Which again is fine from the value for money.4. The menu was great - it had it's own vegetarian menu inside which was good. The menu had meal-deals too and tried catering for people's needs. There is a cocktail menu too which I would've loved but we had a train to catch.5.The staff - I found them to be unhelpful, lazy, slow and very miserable. For example when we first got in- it took us 5 minutes to be seen to - no-one was at the bar at either side! ALL of the waitresses looked like they would rather be someplace else and seemed like they were avoiding us at times. Like when we finished our food, we were stuck with our plates for a good half an hour even though they kept glancing over and making obvious eye contact with me! Also, when we were eating, not once did they ask us how our food was!6 The service was poor - aside from the lazy waitressing, it took them forever and a day for our from-frozen food to come out, I would've been more understanding if it the food was prepared from fresh, made to order, but not from frozen quorn burgers and a luke-warm bogey-quiche.7. Location was great - right in the centre of Tamworth, perfect for a "pick-me-up" after hitting the shops or the castle.8. Interior & atmosphere - quite clean, spacious, packed and modernised pub. Just did not like the fact that a few regulars shot us some strange looks and this drunk, regular guy was staring at me for a good 20 minutes - although this isn't the pubs fault.So I am going to give The Phoenix a score of 3* due to the mixed positive and negative points. In a nutshell, brilliant place if your on a budget and are not picky with your food!

My wife and I visited Tamworth Castle on 22nd March 2015 - had an excellent lunch at the Phoenix - we got the last available table - so a full place with most people eating is always a good sign - good variety of food on offer with meal deals - our lunches including a drink was under £10 - also in Town Centre so very handy and not far from car park

Me and my partner came here for a quick me. We ordered two burgers and chips, the order took over 40 mins to come to up the staff were rude and the regulars gave funny looks to anyone new in there. Wont be coming again

Came here for my dinner the other day and it was appalling. For starters I was ID'd for a glass of coke and scampi and chips. Where is the logic in that? This was at around 5pm and made no sense. The barman wasn't very polite and seemed irritable at customers (including myself). Food came relatively quick and it wasn't the best. There was hardly any scampi, mostly batter. And the peas and chips were undercooked. And considering it wasn't very busy at the time I'm shocked by this. I won't be coming here again.
