The Pheasant Inn in Carlisle

Visited half a dozen times in the last year. The owners know how to run a village pub/restaurant. Tastefully quirky interior design. Excellent but down to earth wine menu. Top quality cask ales. Dog friendly. Very convivial atmosphere and a range of seasonal events. But top of the shop s the quality of the food. Last night we had the best cheese soufflé ever. Then the tastiest lamb, perfectly cooked. It melted with tenderness and a happy organic rearing. The steak was sublime. We’ve covered many signature dishes in recent months and always come away delighted. Prices are reasonable for the quality delivered. Well done to the whole team. A must visit.

Delicious food cooked to perfection. Lovely cosy atmosphere sitting next to a coal fire. Lovely staff who are so attentive and happy to help. A definite must to visit for a delicious meal with great people.

Just had the most delicious vegetarian meal at the Pheasant. Decorated beautifully for Halloween with such attention to detail. Twice baked soufflé with an apricot and pear chutney served with roasted potatoes and a selection of seasonal vegetables . There was lots of choice for vegetarians but have had the soufflé before and it didn’t disappoint. Thank you Izzy our waitress for your attentive skills. We will definitely be back soon😋

Incredible setting, traditional with intimate and homely feel. All staff greeted us with a smile and the service was 10/10 from start to finish. The food is divine, as is the choice of wine. Our relatives stayed in one of the cottages which was really lovely and they enjoyed their stay. We joined them for Sunday lunch, staff were all really welcoming and the owner came to speak to us too recognising our relatives from the previous night. All four of us enjoyed our food and would definitely return back.

Living in West Cumbria myself it is frustrating that Cumbria and the Lakes are something of a culinary wilderness, many tourist traps but very few genuine good pubs and restarants left. Trying to find somewere to meet up for Sunday lunch with my family who were travelling back to Bristol from a holiday in Scotland was certainly a challenge. The Pheasant in Cumwhitton certainly bucks this trend and provided us with a lovely lunch, great service at very good value, convieniently just a short distance off the M6 at junction 43, also definitely a great stop over option. We love visiting The Pheasant, they do the best burgers! It’s a lovely local pub with lots of choice on the menu and an equally good choice of drinks to accompany. You won’t be disappointed if you visit.

Excellent menu. We all had different dishes from the menu and all enjoyed what we had chosen. Great ambiance in the pub too, with a good range of ales.

We were staying at the on site holiday cottage and ate here for dinner. The food was of a really high quality and very tasty. We had the focaccia starter with the most amazing tomato dip, a chicken & halloumi burger and a beef burger. The main courses were generous portions, really well presented and so yummy. The staff were amazing and so helpful, nothing was too much trouble. They were chatty and really friendly. Doggy treats and water bowls were provided. The whole atmosphere was warm and inviting. It has loads of rural country pub charm set in a really pretty village and on a cold April evening the roaring fire was very welcome. When in the area we will certainly be back.

Went for a Xmas meal with family and wasn't disappointed. Food was delicious and service friendly and prompt. Went off menu to do us a veggie burger with no fuss. Would highly recomend.

This is our fourth visit to this village pub since finding it via a recommendation. I have to say the food is restaurant quality, the wine list extensive and well chosen. The service from all the young ladies is exceptional, your never left wanting a drink or try to catch someone’s eye. We had the best Christmas turkey dinner of the season thus far. The specials change weekly and have wine pairings. There is a roaring log fire and plenty of tables, nowhere is cold and the welcome is warm. They gladly welcome dogs and small people too!! Don’t hesitate, just book, you will not be disappointed and are sure to wish it was your local.

My brother-in-law is fanatical about his burgers. He has tried many all over the world over many years. Most of them in the burger capital of the NW - Manchester, and specifically Bar Common, where until his visit to The Pheasant held the title for many years as the best burger in the world for him. Now he takes the view that The Pheasant in Cumwhitton has clinched it. I knew he would, my wife and I were already of the same view.

Excellent service, atmosphere and food. I had a flat iron steak with onion rings plus pepper sauce. It was perfectly cooked and delicious.

Had a really lovely meal on Saturday night. It is a cosy atmosphere and the service was good. A very enjoyable night out.

This restaurant or pub is fantastic. The food was great we ate every last bit both of us. The staff were attentive but not in your face gave us plenty of time to ourselves. Marvellous place hope everybody locally supports it.

My first return visit to the Pheasant after an unfortunate experience under a previous regime some years ago. My chicken dish was well cooked although the chicken portion was small. The staff were excellent and service was very efficient. Beer drinkers will be disappointed as no cask beers were on offer I think the establishment is more a restauraunt than a pub with food.

Had main courses and puddings. The lamb was really tasty and the steak was good too. The puddings were all good. The wine was good value too. The young girl who served us was really helpful and friendly. Definitely recommend.

Me and my partner came here on sunday and enjoyed every minute. The food was gorgeous and the service was great we will definitely be back !

Don't get me wrong, the food served was very tasty and I was grateful to have a vegan option with both the starter and main course however, my main was a small slice of butternut squash with a few black eyed beans and pumpkin seeds thrown across the top. There was less food for the main than for the starter and yet I was charged the same amount as those who had plates filled with burgers and chips or lamb with potatoes. It was most definitely not a main course, more a side dish. I did feed this back to one waitress who clearly did nothing with this so fed it back again to another waiter. I left still hungry and needing to find food and being overcharged for the privilege (i.e. £16 for a slither of butternut squash. Even the increased cost of living does not justify this). If you are vegan, order the starter twice (or three times to try and get enough food). There was no apology, no offer of some form of carbohydrate or anything to pad the meal out and still fully charged. I don't normally complain but to say I was disappointed was an understatement and they clearly didn't care.

First time here for a meal having heard great reports. Great atmosphere, great food will definitely be paying another visit

Thanks to the exceptional quality of service and food, a happy and memorable trip to this Country Inn. The staff were all attentive and ensured a relaxed and comfortable experience. The food, Steak Night dinner, Sea Bass dish of the day, and gourmet burgers, served with freshly made sides and homemade desserts, plus various coffees (and many ales and wines available), were delicious and perfectly cooked,excellent meals. Adults, children and dogs are all welcome here, and with the choice of Cottage stays too, a lovely place to visit in the Eden Valley. Five Stars⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Had a meal here this evening absolutely perfect in every way food was excellent, service excellent, wine excellent and atmosphere excellent I can honestly say this rivals anywhere within a 15mile radius D+G watch out this place punches above the rest in every way.

I rang at the last minute and they found me a slot, but it was only for a limited time. When I arrived they had juggled some stuff around and given me a lovely seat and said there was no rush to finish. I really appreciated that. My dog was fussed over and brought water and biscuits on his own plate! The vegan burger was very tasty and the accommodated my request for a reduced size portion. My one issue was that the burger was very slippery and quite hard to eat with your fingers, like a normal burger, it slid off everywhere! Still delicious though.

Ignore the 4pm opening time. Well worth the wait. Very friendly owner and staff. Dog friendly. Food fabulous. Beer perfect. New endeavour so best of wishes to them. 👍🏻

We were staying next door to The Pheasant in a holiday let and so HAD to try the pub and restaurant. The food was excellent and so we went again the next night as well! Highly recommended are the burgers and also the haddock (well cooked fish and lovely potatoes!). Our landlord came over for a chat and we thoroughly enjoyed or evening in a friendly local!

Had the pleasure of visiting the pheasant for the first time last night. What a great find. I had a fantastic ribeye cooked just how I requested and chips cooked to perfection! The owner even came up to have a chat and apologise for any delay because the pub was full. Staff were attentive and friendly at all times.

We went for a family birthday dinner, the service and staff were excellent and very attentive. The wine was very nice and highly recommended. The dinner was disappointing, especially after reading all the recent reviews and took a long time to arrive. It was very noisy and cramped in the small dining room, making it difficult to hold a conversation - a table in the bar area may be a quieter option!

The food is outstanding, beautiful fresh ingredients cooked perfectly. The service is great, the staff are attentive and make you feel very welcome. We had 2 dogs with us and a baby, nothing was a problem for the staff, ( the baby left a food trail). The banoffee pecan meringue was the best dessert I have had in a very long time. I would definitely recommend a visit.

We stayed two nights at the Pheasant Inn and Rooms while visiting North Yorkshire and Hadrian’s Wall. Our accommodation was attached to the pub and led directly out onto the west facing beer garden where we enjoyed drinks before dinner on both nights while watching the sun go down.The food at The Pheasant is excellent. Their signature burgers are delicious and perfectly cooked. They don’t leave room for pud! On the second night we ate lighter, but equally delicious mains which left room for sweet stuff. Chocolate brownie was squidgy but not heavy. The sticky toffee pudding was sticky, but again not heavy or stodgy. It was made in house but definitely rivals at least one more well known brand that comes to mind.Pete, Kate and all their lovely staff are running a very tight ship and manage to strike a balance between having time to chat to their customers, but also see to efficient service.Our accommodation was very clean and comfortable. We were also told that plans are afoot for some improvements here once things settle down again.All in all a great little place.

We visited The Pheasant Inn whilst spending a long weekend in the area. Due to a longer than expected walk we were running late however, they were happy to put our table reservation back by 30 minutes at short notice. Upon arrival I realised I’d forgotten my face mask and had to request one, again The Pheasant owners were happy to accommodate and they even booked us a taxi for afterwards.On to the food.... We ordered the The Highlander and Fajita Zinger burgers, both superb! The beef burger was really good quality and the proper home cooked onion rings we ordered on the side were great. For dessert we went with chocolate brownie and raspberry and white chocolate sundae, both excellent, and prepared very quickly as our taxi was due shortly.The owners and waiting staff were very friendly, efficient and the food was excellent. We’ll definitely be returning next time we’re in the area.Highly recommended. :-)

Un fuego rugiente y una cálida bienvenida nos recibieron en una noche horrible y húmeda. Nos dieron la opción de mesas que estaban separadas y nuestros abrigos mojados estaban colgados para nosotros.Llevamos 35 años viniendo al faisán y nunca tuvimos una mala comida, esta noche no fue la excepción, estuvo deliciosa. Mi marido tenía el pollo envuelto en tocino en un rollo con ensalada y patatas fritas y yo tenía el cerdo en un puré de patatas dulces con verduras y un lado de patatas fritas. Ambos estaban muy bien presentados y muy sabrosos. ¡No habíamos tenido un entrante ya que ambos queríamos un postre y sabíamos que no podíamos comer ambos! Mi marido tenía el pudín de arroz y yo el pudín de caramelo pegajoso, de nuevo, ambos estaban deliciosos.Se abordaron todos los problemas de salud y seguridad y nos sentimos muy seguros allí. El propietario y el personal eran amables y acogedores. Definitivamente recomendaríamos una comida aquí y mojado sin duda volveremos en poco tiempo.

Esta fue nuestra primera noche desde el encierro y no podría haber elegido un lugar mejor para ir. La comida fue excepcional y el personal muy amable y atento. Aunque todos los procedimientos de Covid estaban en su lugar, se sintió como una noche normal con un ambiente relajante. Nuestra primera visita aquí, pero definitivamente no es la última.

Fuimos a comer el miércoles 12 de agosto y pasamos la noche más maravillosa. La comida fue definitivamente la mejor que he probado en mucho tiempo.Nunca he estado en un restaurante en el que podría haber elegido algo del menú y haberlo disfrutado muchísimo, pero aquí en The Pheasant tenía muchas opciones para elegir.Comencé con el queso brie, que estaba cocinado a la perfección y luego un filete para seguir, servido como me gusta, con aros de cebolla ligeramente rebozados y las más maravillosas patatas fritas caseras. El bistec en sí era realmente increíble.Ojalá tuviera espacio para un pudín.Ojalá pudiera dar 10 estrellas porque The Pheasant realmente las merece.Si vas a comer, no te decepcionará.

Pequeños toques elevaron el faisán a mis ojos a algo especial. El resto de nosotros se aprovechó del maltrecho entrante haggis de mi marido después de su inocente "¿te gustaría probarlo?". Estaba delicioso; cremoso y suave, bastante diferente (como era de esperar) de la oferta amarga, seca y hervida que habíamos probado en Sainsbury's durante el encierro. Las otras comidas también fueron muy bien, con carne de res de origen local, salmón picante y ensaladas llenas de superalimentos increíbles. También había algo mágico en las patatas fritas; hermosa textura y sabor. Mis hijas también estaban en el cielo con los increíbles postres, gofres frescos y helado de truenos y relámpagos. Si no ha probado este último, realmente debe intentarlo. Un sobresaliente para el faisán por la comida, el servicio amable y atento y por la escrupulosa atención a los detalles con las precauciones de Covid. Somos clientes muy felices. La guinda del pastel? Solo tuvimos un minuto para caminar hasta el lindo Airbnb que corren en la cabaña adjunta, con hermosas vistas sobre el campo. Qué más podríamos preguntar?

Fabulosa comida, de origen local era posible. Mi esposo tenía el mejor bistec que había probado en mucho tiempo. Los pudines son deliciosos. Todo hecho en casa. Los 4 disfrutamos de todo lo que teníamos, no me puedo quejar de nada. Recomendamos encarecidamente visitar esta posada cálida y amigable. El personal fue excelente y muy acogedor.

A lovely warm welcome and roaring open fire met us on a wet, cold, windy night. A great choice of dishes including an extensive specials board.My husband's steak was melt in the mouth, my stuffed loin of pork was delicious. All in all another great meal and a lovely night out. We are new to the area and trying different venues . The pheasant was. Excellent in every way . Peter and Kate are so friendly and welcoming . We had a table by the roaring fire ..The Sunday lunch menu was cream of mushroom soup or chicken lover pate. They were both superb . We all had the roast beef or there was lamb with all the trimmings. The sweets were raspberry cheese cake or pecan pie and ice cream . Never tasted a more scrumptious pecan pie just full of nuts .We then finished with a cafetière of coffee with cream and hot milk. There was a good choice of wines. We had a red Australian Shiraz such good value We will certainly return fantastic value for money The whole restaurant is cosy and such a homely atmosphere.

Sunday lunch was absolutely amazing, best rhubarb crumble ever! Fab cosy atmosphere and just beautifully cooked food. Kate and Pete make you feel so welcome! Highly recommend! Kids loved it too after our lovely scenic walk in the countryside, just perfect.

Superb weekend spend here with Peter and Kate a warm and friendly welcome. The staff are fantastic a true credid to yourselves. Burns night supper we made into a weekend, celebrating the life of Robbie Burns. Five course meal which was absolutely stunning and timed to perfection.It ran like clockwork. The Lakes Distillery were in residence to showcase there fantstic range of Whiskeys. The Haggis was traditionally piped in by a Highland Piper and Burns readings given throughout the evening by various Locals. All in all a brilliant evening. We booked Sunday Lunch which we would Highly Recommend and very reasonably priced. All the staff including Peter and Kate the owners couldn't do enough for you. We stayed in our Motorhome in the car park and felt very safe and at home. I would Highly recommend The Pheasant Inn to anyone.We will be back very soon. Thank you Andrew and Catherine.

We went to the Pheasant for Sunday lunch with 2 friends yesterday. It was the first time we had been back since the new owners had taken over. In all the years of going to the Pheasant we had never had a bad meal so were a little apprehensive. However, we needn't have worried, it was lovely and warm with a roaring fire, the welcome was as warm too. We all thoroughly enjoyed the food, the meat was delicious and everything was very tasty. Our friends, who have small appetites, were pleased they could have a half portion. The staff were friendly and courteous. We would certainly recommend the Pheasant. Good luck to you all, we hope you'll be very successful.

Fuimos a The Pheasant con amigos para la cena y la noche de preguntas y pasamos una noche maravillosa. El pub es cómodo y el servicio es excelente. Wonderful surroundings and a very warm welcome, the majority of us had the lamb which was utter loveliness, 1of our daughters went for beef, her plate was totally clear when she'd finished, that says something in its self. Veg soup was delicious too. Would highly recommend

We had a wonderful warm welcome from Pete and Kate and a delicious meal in lovely comfortable surroundings. The food was restaurant standard; beautifully presented and served. Arancini to start was amazing. Our main courses were a five bean chilli and a lasagne, both were excellent.We loved everything about this place; the food, the lovely crackling log fire, the service and the whole “feel” of the place.Highly recommended.

First visit to our local following a change of owners. Had a lovely evening with friends. The ambience, traditional Inn, was perfect on a cold November evening, cosy and warm. We enjoyed a pre meal drink at the bar and weren’t rushed to our table. Menu had some of our old favourites and some new additions. Selection was a diverse mix of pub favourites to more unusual dishes and sourced locally.

Really enjoyed our first sunday lunch at the Pheasant with new owners, Kate and Pete. Delicious food freshly prepared and served by lovely friendly people and a glass of their rose wine in front of a roaring log fire. What's not to like?

Had a lovely meal here with my sisters whilst holidaying in Cairngarth cottage last weekend, wonderful food and helpful friendly staff. Would recommend you try it out if staying in the area.

We went to the Pheasant Inn today for Sunday lunch. It was excellent, we had the roast beef. The flavour was amazing. Followed by a creme brulee which was silky smooth with a lovely crunchy sugar topping and a side of ice cream. The service was quick, the food delicious, prices very good and the owners are very friendly and helpful. We were made to feel most welcome. Lovely atmosphere what more could you want.

We visited 2 nights in a row and both times were excellent! Super friendly and helpful staff were happy to accommodate our large family bookings. They have lots of tasty vegetarian and vegan options so the veggies in the group were very happy :)

Desde que esta posada reabrió de nuevo, hemos visitado para comer aquí, 3 veces. Menú excelente, comida deliciosa y con buenas raciones. El personal más acogedor y amable con encontrar tiempo para bromear. Una gran noche y un lugar para llevar a sus familiares y amigos durante la noche. Sarah la gerente / propietario afable y servicial.

As per the title really. Nothing outstanding but quite friendly and nice reliable food. We booked in June but I don't think you really need to other than maybe a Saturday

Like many others, we were recommended this country pub by the owner of our accommodation, and it was certainly justified. Do not be put off by the road works (July 2018)- it is worth the extra drive on the diversion!

We came here as a party of 7 celebrating our parents 50th wedding anniversary and I am so pleased we decided to dine here. The menu had a great selection and the food did not disappoint, service was excellent and the atmosphere was friendly. Absolutely delightful

What a beautiful place, the setting is wonderful, the Inn is magnificent, the food absolutely brilliant.

This pub was recommended to us by the owners of the accommodation we were staying at. We were not disappointed as the pub is friendly, homely and has a lovely atmosphere with a beautiful stove fire and nice quirky decor. There was a good menu and a special board and amazing deserts...sticky toffee pudding with ice cream and hot toffee sauce is a must! There is an outdoor seating area and the views are stunning. The only disappointment was that I ordered beer battered haddock and it was really greasy the plate was covered in grease however my partner ordered the same and his was not greasy at all. I would certainly return. Staff friendly chatty and welcoming and the menu offers good value for money.

Lovely people and lovely food . Recommended by our B and B and not disapointed . Will go again when in the area next. The food is pub grub but with a good selection on the special's board .It was good value .
