Went to celebrate our friends 40th birthday. Really wish we hadn't. As a relative local, we have visited the place several times under the previous owner. Although always pretty pricy, it always felt welcoming. Where do you begin now? Considering the current astronomical pricing in place, the food offering was embrassing throughout the meal. Could write chapter & verse. How on earth can they justify charging so much for what is a very poor, under whelming sirloin steak?? What is it with serving thin steaks? The food being served is so far removed from the pricing. Whoever is in charge really needs to look at the offering. Maybe get a decent chef. There are so many better dining options in the area. They certainly do not compete with the Star, who are streets ahead. Also just up the road is the Plough at Wombleton. They cook up a storm & care about you. Again a way better dining option to here. Sorry pheasant, either up your standards or drop the silly prices.

Visited for Sunday lunch and have noticed the meat portions reduce every time. The pork was 3 small medallions cut very thin with soggy crackling. Vegetables were dry and the pork gravy was very thick. The beef was better both in taste and portion size but generally an underwhelming lunch. Also dislike the sommelier suggesting a bottle of wine at £85 a bottle.

We booked a special weekend here for a couple, including the meal, as they are real foodies. We are so embarrassed by their bitterly disappointing experience and lack of care by the staff. The steak arrived over-cooked (was ordered 'rare') and when the customer sent this back, the waiter returned with a blue steak and an over-cooked lamb for his wife. There has been no apology and no care shown by the so-called general manager. This restaurant/hotel has always been our favourite in this area, under the old management, with the highest of reputations. However, sadly, it seems to have slipped very quickly. We gladly pay high prices for top quality food, and therefore we'll continue to patronise the Star Inn at Harome and give the Pheasant a wide berth.

Went for a meal here last Saturday night, been lots of times before when it was owned by a local lady, was always very good. I had the steak, which was small, overcooked, I asked for medium, came with one strange looking mushroom, and a bowl of very average chips, £40 My wife had the cod, which was just OK, but the portions are tiny, you have to order sides if you want something resembling a meal! This place was always renowned for it's quality beer, but now it is very average I am afraid. Good points, the bread was good, the staff were excellent, but overall, for what you pay, there is better food and value elsewhere.

A beautiful property and setting for a birthday lunch on the terrace under the arbor. Ordered the steak and for GBP 40.00 I thought it would at least be a 250g fillet. Instead it was a thin cut and very disappointing for the price. Even the peppercorn sauce was extra! Still....can't fault the lovely waiting staff and Yorkshire in the sunshine!

Very disappointed. Poor food, overpriced. This place used to be excellent, we’ve been coming for many years. We won’t be coming back. Found out tonight it’s under new ownership/management. Explains a lot.

I’d heard a lot about this place but never had the chance to go. First visit today and well,it’s good really good, really,it’s a must. I had the Sunday Lunch (beef) the meat was wonderfully cooked, perfectly pink, just right. The Yorkshire pudding was light and crispy, the veg was perfectly cooked. Weirdly, the thing that really stole the show for me was the cultured butter, never had it before, it was delicious creamy like nothing I’ve had before. My partner had the butternut squash ‘steak’ with lentil, garlic and sage, adapted because she’s gluten free, it looked very appealing. She said it was really really good, cooked perfectly. In short it’s an absolute must, excellent food, relaxed atmosphere and great friendly service in beautiful surroundings. I’m going to go again, and again and again.

Birthday treat to go to one of our favourite places for lunch but what a terrible let down. Food prices have been increased but quality has gone down hill rapidly. Had the festive menu, cauliflower soup was OK , but the turkey with all the trimmings was a grey tasteless reheated embarrassment! What has happened here is a mystery, if this had been served in a greasy spoon cafe it would have been sent back, let alone this place which now costs ninety pounds for a two course lunch and and a gin and tonic. So terribly disappointed!

Stayed at a cottage nearby so went twice, once for drinks and once for dinner. Thoroughly enjoyed both experiences. Wintery evenings, roaring fire, a superb service from James in the bar, Liam was attentive looking after our restaurant orders and unfortunately didn't get his name but a wonderful gentleman managed to sort a little off menu request. Amazingly tasty food, perfect atmosphere, every single member of staff attentive and genuinely nice people. Definitley recommend and cannot wait to return

Having been to The Star we felt it only fair to go to the Pheasant too. Now everyone’s opinion will differ and both restaurants are well worth a visit. The atmosphere was pleasant, the wait staff friendly yet professional and the food lovely. I had the halibut for main and in my opinion the fish itself was slightly over cooked, however the presentation and accompanying octopus terrine beautiful. Dessert was a masterpiece with a hidden surprise and overall we had a phenomenal lunch. I would definitely return.

Not a great meal. Nothing had a wow factor apart from the cherry soufflé. My had the halibut, which was dry, overcooked. My veal just didn't have any great flavour. All in all a huge disappointment. The waiting staff, however, were brilliant. We won't be returning.

Went for the first time for lunch following the good reviews and a tip off from a friend. Wonderful decor and atmosphere. The staff were attentive and welcoming. The menu was very interesting - the seafood platter to start with tasted divine, and I also have to compliment them on the warm freshly baked bread which was a salted brioche-like roll with lightly whipped butter which was utterly delicious. The main was fish pie which was again delicious - but glad I also ordered a side of fries as I had arrived very hungry! Dessert was titled “Strawberry” and had the most amazing tangy elderflower sorbet. The service was swift, not being kept waiting, and engagement was wonderful. From the lady on the front desk who greeted us, to the head waiter and especially to our main waitress who was on her first day and was so friendly and polite. Thank you all, we shall return again soon!

I live locally, have visited The Pheasant on occasions in the past and have had no cause for complaint, however on Friday 13th January ( perhaps the date is significant) I was taken to The Pheasant for afternoon tea by a friend as a treat. We were both very disappointed, to begin with we were not offered a choice of teas, which is the norm in other places, we chose not to have the cakes and were offered more sandwiches instead, they were miniscule....one tiny rectangle each of three fillings, the extra ones didn’t arrive and when I eventually enquired was told that the chef had run out of smoked salmon! I said we would be happy with a different filling and one or two more finally arrived. The small sausage roll each was acceptable but the scones could only be described as rock cakes, looked nothing like scones, were cold and almost impossible to cut into, once we managed to get into them they were very crumbly and couldn’t, by the wildest stretch of the imagination be described as scones. I felt very sorry for my friend who paid a ridiculous amount for something which was not worth half that much. I will certainly not be recommending The Pheasant for afternoon tea to any of my friends. A great disappointment on, what should have been, an enjoyable occasion. Elizabeth

The Pheasant describes itself as a “country hotel” but the restaurant punches above that modest description. This was the sort of meal someone probably had in mind when the phrase “Modern British cooking” was first coined. Perhaps surprising for a restaurant in rural Yorkshire, the amuse bouche was a take on Lancashire Hotpot. Very long cooked lamb, so it was almost a puree, incorporating chives and a fine dice of carrot, topped with crispy potato puffs. Really good - we are northwesterners so are picky about our hotpots. For one of us, there was a risotto starter, using Whitby lobster, broad beans and Cheddar. Perfect consistency – quite wet as you’d generally find in Italy but rarely in the UK. That was followed by halibut – just cooked through and almost a tad translucent. I sympathise with whoever is in the kitchen who has to do the very fine chopping but there’s another fine dice, this time of potato and there’s some sprigs of tendersteam broccoli. Hollandaise sauce came, thoughtfully, in separate jug. Across the table, butternut squash soup was perfect for early autumn. It’s enhanced with a swirl of cream and a sprinkle of pine nuts. For a pasta main course, the kitchen took good ingredients and did very little cheffing about with them. Perfectly al dente rigatoni, crab, sun dried tomato sauce, halved cherry tomatoes and smoked burrata. It’s the sort of dish you’d like to think that, on a good day, you could prepare in your own kitchen – but probably couldn’t. As often the case, desserts weren’t as good as the savoury ones. Versions of “Death by Chocolate” can be an opportunity for the kitchen to prepare a rich and indulgent plate. This wasn’t. It was certainly OK though. Chocolate delice, ganache, a scattering of brownie crumbs and an indeterminate sorbet. The other plate was a take on Bakewell tart, topped with a baked apricot and sprinkled with almonds. A lemon thyme sorbet didn’t work as well as you might have hoped. We finished with good espresso and petit fours - chocolate truffle nd a lemon & raspberry tart. Chocolate always works with coffee, lemon not so well.

We booked the Pheasant as a treat for my friends birthday. The restaurant it’s self is nice & set in a lovely village, however the food was really a let down. Three of our party had steak & chips which was OK (nothing exceptional for £32.50) The birthday girl & myself ordered the Lemon sole with ‘fruits de mer’ - first of all it was cold, the lemon sole was so bland it tasted like it had just been defrosted, the lobster was so rubbery i could hardly chew it, the mussels were vinegary like they had just been tipped out of a pot from a stall at the seaside. We complained and the waitress took them away then the restaurant manager brought the menu for us to order something else, but as this had been so horrible it put me off spending anymore money on anything else. Bearing in mind all our main courses were £32.50 each which you don’t mind paying if the food is great, but none of it was. The restaurant manager (Alan) then brought the bill, which had the 2 x £32.50 removed for the two fish dishes sent back but still had our sides of veg at 2 x £5 which we hadn’t eaten as we didn’t have anything to eat them with. The main reason for the * review was how this was handled by the restaurant manager, there was nothing offered like a free drink or desert or anything to compensate the fact that we’d driven 100 mile round trip to be served cold tasteless food, in fact he made me feel like it was my fault I didn’t like cold bland fish, with not even an apology from him! I drove the 50 miles back home after only eating a bread roll.

My husband and I recently had afternoon tea at The Pheasant as a post Christmas treat which was extremely nice, especially the cheese and fruit scones, but unfortunately the service was a real disappointment. No one on reception when we arrived, eventually told to 'head towards the dining area' (never been to the Pheasant before so no idea where to go). Eventually shown to a table in the lounge area and our order taken. Waiter who brought the afternoon tea couldn't remember what the cakes on the to plate where. We were sat there for an hour or more with no further visits from the waiting team. No one came to see if we needed further drinks, ask if everyting was ok. Had to ask a member of the waiting staff on the way out where to pay. Again receiption unmanned and when someone did appear they were obviously eating something, not really very professional. The afternoon tea was superb but the service left alot to be desired. Needless to say, no service charge paid. Hopefully things will have improved when we return.

Having been regular visitors to The Star over many years, for some strange reason The Pheasant hadn't really been on our radar. Not sure why, but certainly our loss. The welcome was friendly and great to see Jacqui after our long absence. Her presence at The Star always made our visits a delight and seeing her again at The Pheasant only reaffirmed our decision to visit the restaurant on a lovely September lunchtime. Every part of our lunch experience was exactly what we expected. Food, service, ambience, every little detail was taken care of. Meeting Lisa, our waitress, was certainly an added bonus. Easy chat and unobtrusive impeccable service seemed an easy task to her. Jacqui and her team work so hard to make everyone feel special, a rarity these days. In fact, it was so good, we had to make a second visit for dinner a couple of days later. Sadly we only spend a very short time now in North Yorkshire having relocated to Portugal for most of the year. Nonetheless we will make every effort to visit when we're back in the UK next year. The Suite consisted of a four poster bed, huge wardrobes, lounge area and a fabulous bathroom - there were lots of little luxurious touches like pristine white fluffy robes and towels and high class toiletries, a wide selection box of teas and coffees, complimentary sloe gin, a well stocked ‘honesty box’ of food and drinks to choose from. Fresh fruit was a wonderful extra. The Suite and, particularly, the bathroom was scrupulously clean - gleaming, in fact! The Hotel is laid out to the highest standard with wonderful comfort and curiosities everywhere. The staff are all excellent and attentive to make sure their guests have the most enjoyable time. Simple touches , like remembering just how you like your coffee make all the difference The breakfast choices, freshness and extensive range are seldom to be found anywhere to this high standardThe Hotel setting is tranquil and beautiful with delightful walks in all directions - the view over the duck pond from our Suite was mesmerizing There is also, surprisingly, a small but delightful indoor swimming pool tucked away in the groundsIf you are looking for a restful idyll then look no further. We will most definitely return.

We had a meal at The Pheasant to celebrate a friends birthday and if you are looking for something rather special, this is the place. Delicious canapes served while we studied the menu. Extra treats severed during the meal and food that really tasted special. Service was top class with professional and attentive staff that where a cut above the norm, which say's it all about this restaurant. Plus the advantage of charming decor and ambience. Forget about the cost, treat yourself.

We attended a birthday dinner at The Pheasant and stayed the night. Our room was beautifully decorated, in a traditional English style. The bed was very comfortable, and all the bathroom products lovely. The service was excellent during the party, and through out our stay. The staff were over a high standard. Our dinner delicious, as was breakfast. I cannot fault the Pheasant and will definitely re visit.

The lovely setting, with the sun shining and the garden with its pond, puts the diner in a good mood to enjoy lunch which, here, is a serious step above pub food with a carefully prepared selection of dishes and an interesting wine list with a couple of notable English representatives. Our first courses, extremely tasty crab risotto and very good local asparagus with salmon, led into a satisfying rabbit pie and some wild sea bass with crispy skin and lovage velouté. Our desserts were just as successful, an affogato that was almost criminally generous and presented with an extra dousing of strong coffee, and chocolate cake contrasted with olive oil ice cream and a slightly gingery Breton biscuit. Wine is clearly taken seriously to judge by the Coravin selection, but my red was served in a smudgy glass and the bottles not shown until I requested a new glass and to see the bottles. Nevertheless, very enjoyable and good value for money.

Stayed with 3 friends and our black Labrador for a weekend. It was lovely, our dog friendly room had its own lounge/kitchen area with log fire which we lit in the evenings, lovely . It is like staying in a very comfortable home with excellent wines and wonderful . The lamb was superb and all the food beautifully presented and tasteful. Their beer bread rolls are fabulous and their sweets to die for .A lovely weekend will return , thanks to all the staff for looking after us so well

The atmosphere of every part of the experience, from fireside sofas to table in the conservatory, was wonderful. Service was friendly too, but the food is the standout here. Amuse bouches before we had even reached the table of beetroot purée with quince in a cone, and tapioca crisp with squid foam were lovely. All three breads with truffle butter were amazing, as was the carrot and cumin soup. The other courses of ravioli with shrimp and scallops and pickle, smoked venison loin with cheese and pickled red cabbage, and the date soufflé with salted caramel were all delicious. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a special evening.

Had an enjoyable family friendly lunch here (including two small children). Service very good throughout (and child friendly), food good too although perhaps not as good as I'd hoped (desserts in particular were a bit disappointing).Overall though, very much enjoyed our visit and would happily go back.

My wife and I visited the Pheasant Inn as a belated Christmas treat. We had read great reviews and were not disappointed. We checked in and were warmly greeted and shown to our room. A beautiful room that overlooked the duck pond. We took afternoon drinks in one of the spacious lounges all comfortable and heated by log burners. Then came the evening meal and what a treat! the food, surroundings and service was outstanding, faultless! After a swim in the small but beautifully appointed pool we took breakfast in the same restaurant and again the food and service was fantastic. Can’t wait to visit again. Well done all.

A group of us were staying at the Star last week and thought we would pop into the Peasant for a quick lunch and a coffee ! Well once we saw the fire crackling and the fantastic welcome from Liam we decided to stay longer ! Yes one of us had a scone but the rest decided on sandwiches and chips( very good ) and the teas and coffees turned into Gin and Tonics all made to suit our tastes . We were all a little rowdy as it was my birthday but Liam kept us in order and made us laugh . Before leaving we had a little cake with Happy birthday iced on it ... lovely touch , and then a tour of the hotel and saw one of the excellent looking rooms . We have all decided next time we visit we will be staying there, hopefully before June ...Liam you know why . Thank you

Came here after a lovely drive through the snow at neighboring hills of Rosedale . We hadn’t booked and the car park looked full so wasn’t expecting lunch . Lovely warm welcome as always and we were asked if we had a reservation that was ok as we were more than happy to sit in the warm cosy bar area for dinner. I opted for the Hensley brew of pale ale and the other half a lager god that was a lovely beer . We opted for the 60 day old beef for both of us and god did it look and taste gorgeous . Two big thick pieces of beef Yorkshire pudding roast potatoes and some gorgeous vegetables to accompany the dish . Absolutely gorgeous we then had dessert crem brûlée for me and the crumble for him both delicious but we were both very very full . Our bill came to £65 yes a tad expensive for lunch but all I can say if you want 5 star service and food with a fantastic cosy atmosphere then this is the place to come .

The Pheasant Inn is a really lovely old pub with rooms in the village of Harome near Helmsley where our 3-generation family troupe had rented a cottage for a pre-Christmas getaway. I had been minded to book the Star, also in Harome, but the Pheasant menu looked more interesting for our early 'teens. We were warmly greeted on arrival for our 7pm booking and shown to the bar. Two 175ml glasses of house champagne (£15.00each) and two superb pints of Helmsley brewed "Legend" bitter (£4.00) plus soft drinks were much enjoyed in the festively decorated lounge with huge inglenook and log fire. Home produced canapes were a nice surprise : soft cheese filled profiteroles and tiny crunchy cones with fish. Then the problems began. None of us could easily find a dish that we really wanted which was strange and disappointing. The burger (£16.00) was rejected by grandson (who never rejects food) as tasted weird. Certainly other tasted and it was not fresh crumbed beef but a solid wedge presumably bought in? Similarly chicken pasta bolognese (£8.00 from the bar menu) was not relished by granddaughter although she hoovered up the tables plate of green veg including al dente broccoli. I had shelled Shetland mussels in a leek sauce (£9.00) was fine but not special and followed with short crust pastry pheasant pie with mash (£20.00) which was also adequate but not memorable. My wife"special of the day" pan fried John Dory fillets(£22.00) arrive stone cold and was not enjoyed. A bottle of Pinot Gris Saint Clair (£33.00) and the sommelier's recommended K-Lys Clos Troteligotte Malbec (£35.00) were both good selections and good value. The final straw was the bill that arrived without the deposit of £60.00 deducted - that was sheer incompetence and did not provide the right sort of impression. This Inn/Hotel has so much to offer but they quickly need to provide a more interesting and modern menu with a chef that can present hot and attractive food. This was such a disappointment after such an encouraging start

Recently visited with a group of friends as we were celebrating a special occasion. We were visiting early so met for breakfast at the Hotel. There was a brilliant selection on the buffet including a varied fresh fruit selection and the best Granola I have ever eaten! It was delicious, so much so I have enquired about purchasing some as it’s made at the hotel! The hot food menu was also varied, I had avocado with poached eggs on Sourdough toast which I really enjoyed, although I was a little envious of the full English my friends had which looked delicious! Overall really fab service and excellent food, would definitely recommend, I just need to go back and try the rest of the menu now!

Extremely busy and you will certainly need to book well in advance. Cosy lounges with proper fires, parking somewhat restricted but it is safe outside the hotel on what is a very quiet area.

Sunday lunch here has a bit of style. The staff are all very friendly and give the impression that they want their guests to really enjoy their visit. From the bread (freshly baked individual small loaves) offered at the start of the meal and through each course our meal was excellent. The starters were full of flavour and having settled for the traditional roast beef it was served perfectly (slightly pink) and accompanied with an excellent selection of vegetables and roast potatoes which were also perfectly cooked. This was a most enjoyable and relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

We decided on the spur of the moment to drive up to Harome for lunch on the Bank Holiday Monday, and arrived at the Pheasant Inn in time to be able to park our car in their ample sized private car park. We were only looking for a bar meal, though the restaurant did look extremely inviting. I would describe it as quite a rustic style bar area, very cosy, comfortable and above all peaceful, all attributes which we look for before deciding to stay anywhere new. We found all the staff we met throughout the hotel, bar and restaurant areas extremely polite and helpful, providing just the right amount of help. We were able to get the level of service we wanted without feeling either ignored or harassed, and that is a skill not many places manage to achieve. The food and drinks were very good quality, reasonably priced, not cheap, but then it is not a cheap and nasty pub chain. Had it been, we would not have stayed and eaten there. All in all, the Pheasant Inn is just the type of place we love to visit, and we will definitely make plans to visit again and probably stay next time in the the hotel, which will give us more time to enjoy their top quality hospitality.

This isn't our first visit to the Pheasant we have been coming here for the past couple of years, we started over 10 years ago by going to the Star which is in the same village and we have been there for Christmas, New Year and throughout the year but! I have to say the Pheasant has over taken the Star and everything about it from the service, environment and not forgetting the food is truly perfect. A group of use came for dinner this week and we all sat outside and we all agreed, after visiting the nearby Star for many years this just now has the edge, I am not going to go into the food I am just going to say you have it right "well done".

A fine summer’s evening, dining al fresco at this fine Inn was a delight.A fresh seasonal menu including Halibut, aged beef and local lamb.A surprising blend of oxtail and squid was stunning and fresh summer deserts for those with room.A perfectly executed peach soufflé was thoroughly enjoyed. Service a little haphazard at times but friendly and with a smile.A great bottle of crisp NZ wine from a fairly priced list complinted the fare.

We have stayed in Harome a number of times, mostly in the Star Inn a few yards down the road. So it was nice for me to try a meal at the well-rates Pheasant. We had a lovely a la carte meal, with smoked trout, carved at the table, and just the right portion of lamb loin the stand out. In fact, no missteps with the food from amuse bouche to petit fours. But if there’s room to improve, it is in wine and wine service. Admittedly, this is Yorkshire and beer dominates (battling prosecco and Pinot Grigio no doubt). But IF you decide to put £280 bottles wine on the list, then you need to get the finer point right:- Wine by the glass should be poured in front of customers (coravin is problematic - but bring the bottle as well as the poured glass). This avoids the problem of bringing the WRONG wine which happened to us. - have appropriate stemware. NOT just a mediocre standard white and red glass. I want burgundy in - believe it or not - a burgundy glass. Same for Barolo.- and, being a little picky, don’t over pour if someone has bought a bottle. Finally, check the prices. It is annoying to find the same wine in the ‘by the glass’ list for one price, and a different price (same pour size) in the main list. Though our bill ended up selecting the lowest (I think).Still - great to see quality like this in Yorkshire.

We have enjoyed an excellent Sunday Dinner to celebrate my Mums Birthday. The service and attention by Liam and Charlotte was just brilliant, we could have not asked for it to be any better. The salmon starter, beef and Eaton Mess were lovely. Totally flexible approach to changes to meet our family’s tastes. Worth every penny. Walked there the day before and sat in the garden with our dog. Would recommend The Pheasant for a special event or just to pop in, stunning deco and garden. We booked after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor for my Mums 80th Birthday party . We were seated on a lovely round table in the conservatory and expect for the sun shining in and my Dad insisting on wearing his hat it was a perfect location. There was a slight mishap with a glass of diet coke being spilt over my Mum but it was really handled well and my Mum found it funny and loved the attention she received from the wonderful Liam. My 2 fussy Daughters were catered for with a chicken breast in place of beef and the beef was absolutely wonderful, so tender and tasty. The veg were really good again. I had the Lemon Possett as a desert and it was so good. Fussy pregnant Daughter was then offered a surprise ice cream sundae that when it arrived had us all feeling jealous. The meal was finished with coffee and chocolates that were really nice. Yes it was expensive but the food and service were outstanding and it was the best family meal we have had in a long long time . Thank you to all the staff that made my Mums Birthday one to remember.

This was a very mixed experience. We found the atmosphere in the restaurant rather stuffy and old fashioned, but the service was both excellent and very friendly. We started with a risotto and a mussel dish, both of which were good. The chicken main we had was good, but the pork rather disappointing - when I see pork on a menu at Sunday lunch-time I expect to get pieces of pork sliced off a roast, but when the pork arrived it was a chop, which I would not have ordered if it had been described on the menu as such. The thing that really spoilt the meal for us was having to endure the most banal live music. There is no way we would return to this restaurant unless we were sure this would not happen again. In view of the fact we would not return I was tempted to rate this restaurant as poor, but that would seem unfair in view of the excellent service and on average reasonably good food.

Very disappointed with the food at The Pheasant. Free canapes delicious as were the bread rolls but the main courses were quite unpleasant, all over salted especially the chicken pie. Four of us had this and all left the tough, fatty pancetta in the pie and the baby leeks which were so tough they were inedible. Rhubarb souffle well risen but missing the rhubarb? Staff were pleasant and attentive, good ambience, comfy chairs and lovely linen. Just don't eat there!

"you enter as a stranger and leave as a friend" said the bar room sign which greeted this weary wanderer who'd taken a wrong turn. I ordered a pint and sure enough before it was pulled I was in conversation with a local man who thenintroduced me to the bar staff! The Sunday Roast was in full swing, the campers were in and out from the pub campsite and the occasional labrador was stealing hearts but nothing seemed to much trouble for the staff. This is a proper country pub, as warm and cosy as a storybook cottage and it's charm appeared to be working on a nearby American couple who's fantasies of an Olde English Country Pub had all just come true. I was on foot and was a few miles from the nearest town but lo and behold one of my new-found companions insisted on giving me a lift... As I exited the bar I glanced the "enter as a stranger and leave as a friend" sign again - this pub does what it says on the tin!
