Great food and extensive garden

Had the pleasure of visiting the Highwayman Inn in Sheriff Hutton recently, and I must say, it was an excellent experience! We demolished a lovely roast, and it was absolutely delicious. The roast was perfectly cooked, with tender meat and all the trimmings you could ask for. The portion size was generous, and everything on the plate was full of flavour. The inn itself has a warm and inviting atmosphere, making it a great place to enjoy a meal with family or friends. The staff were friendly and attentive, ensuring that we had everything we needed throughout our visit. It’s clear that they take pride in offering good food and great service. If you’re in the area and looking for a hearty meal, I would highly recommend stopping by the Highwayman Inn. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, you won’t be disappointed. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

Lovely pub in the village of Sheriff Hutton. Outstanding quality of food. All home cooked and lots to choose from. Portions are huge. I had the chicken supreme which was very flavourful and my husband had the lasagne which he said was the best he’s ever had in a pub. Service was excellent and super friendly. Reasonably priced and very good value for money. Definitely worth a visit, you won’t be disappointed

Tried to book table by phone throughout afternoon, no- one answered. Decided to risk it and arrived at pub to enquire. Tied to get staff attention with no success - other people served ahead of me.

An old style building,what we like ,had a nice table with a view.Food was good,we walked from camp site.Check if it's open as closed at beginning of week.

We arrived at 2pm, but they had stopped serving food at that time. The lady behind the bar was blunt, shall we say. We didn't stay.

Visited this pub while on a trip to York. The food was amazing & wished we had this place on our doorstep!

Popped in for a half while waiting for the chippy to (re)open. What a quirky and unique little pub with fantastic decor. Very decently priced drinks, games available to play, and the Olympics was quietly on in the corner. Popular it seems as it filled up while we were there. They also allowed our daughter in.

Lovely tradition pub with homemade food. The portions are generous but the quality of the food is incredible. Normally its one or the other. My family regretted having starters because they got too full. Each of us had a different dish and every one was incredible.

Absolutely beautiful venue with a great atmosphere. Food was beautiful with a good portion size, great selection of beers as well. Only small negatives was the service was a little slow with long gaps between courses.

Called in for Sunday lunch and I was not disappointed, good size portions with fresh vegetables and home made Yorkshire pudding. They also do a smaller option if your hungry, also a good selection of beers. The staff were very helpful and pleasant, I would recommend if you passing this way.

Felt uncomfortable. No greeting. Order incorrect as staff disinterested. Only asked if it was ok when payment was being made. It’s clearly a pub for locals.

Lovely traditional pub environment with a good choice of food options. Had to wait a while for the food, but the food side of the pub was full so it is not a criticism, just an observation.

Good food, good ale and wonderful, attentive service. Busy evening but they managed to accommodate a table for two without prior reservation.

Food and service is awful. Very slow and the food is usually raw. I also saw some awful things happening in the kitchen such as one of the chefs pleasuring a burger with his you know what. I also heard a girl shout from the kitchen "Oh you're so wet but I can make you wetter". I was absolutely appalled. The staff are very unprofessional and don't do there job correctly.

Had a great Sunday lunch, great food good portions and helped down with a well kept real ale, followed by a drink in the beer garden, spacious, large and a suntrap, what's not to like. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Fantastic characterful pub full of charm and period features. Good ales, food was served piping hot and by 'eck was there plenty of it! We had a vegetable soup and a butterfly prawns to start, followed by the sausage and a 12oz haddock and chips for mains. These were served with seasonal veg, and we came away absolutely stuffed to the rafters with no space for pudding, which is extremely rare for us! Will be sure to come back!

Fabulous pub with superb staff. Excellent food. Always a joy to stop by for a pint and some lunch plus a chat with landlord and lady Ian and Lisa.

We went for Mother's Day lunch. Absolutely faultless. The food was perfect, the staff were fabulous, and all at a very reasonable cost. Can't wait to go back!

My girlfriend and myself stayed in the shepards hut at the castle ruin, this little gem of a pub is brilliant and only a 5 minute walk away. Food was really good, service and atmosphere top notch and the locals and staff are very welcoming! Would go there all the time if we lived nearby. 5 star *****

Great place and great food. Lovelly little beer garden. Try the steak and kidney it's wonderful.

Decent pub and mostly friendly people. Couple of dyed blonde old women growling and gossiping about everyone when you walk in are a little off putting to the new customers though. Situated at a crossroads, it is in a great location and has one of the best beer gardens around. Food always looks good, worth a visit.

Staying at caravan site nearby, and had meal for the 2 nights we've been here. Food was excellent and service great, with friendly staff. Will definately return when we are staying in the area again.

Great Sunday Lunch. Am not surprised that it was so busy. Very dog friendly, but only in the garden or the small bar - so make sure to book a table if taking your dog. Only 2 beers on hand pump - Theakstons Best Bitter and Pennine Hair Of The Dog... but good choices. We chose the small meal which was actually quite big but saw several people eating the adult size which was pretty massive. We were told the roast beef was well cooked so had pork which was excellent. All really good. Traditional puddings were also really great. Super lunch at a very reasonable price. Brisk service from a hard working and very friendly staff. Will be coming here again .

What a find.... We were at the Caravan and Camping Club site and walked it. Took 40 minutes with the dogs. What a great find, we loved dinner, proper home made steak and kidney and steak sn mushroom pies, seasonal veg, great plentiful gravy and nice puds to follow. My wife wants to take this place home to Lancashire. Beer was 1st class too. Can't believe anyone can give thiscless than 5 stars. We had dogs so ate in bar area which we expect and not only food but atmosphere and locals banter was great.

Chili chicken isn’t a chicken breast with chili con carne thrown on it it’s a weird combination and doesn’t work I think your chef needs to have a good look at himself and stop throwing cheap mince onto everything it was even on the burgers have a bit of imagination we decided not to have came with a mince overtone

Cosy little pub with friendly staff and locals.

What a great little pub. We visited on Saturday evening for a meal before my wife's triathlon. I don't think we could have had a better meal, better atmosphere or anything really. The staff and customers were friendly, accommodating and just generally a really really great pub. The food was exceptional from the starters (biggest chicken goujons I think we have seen) to the desserts (the lightest sticky toffee I have had) and everything in between. We will definitely be trying to visit again if are ever in the area.

Had so many bad meals recently that we were beginning to despair but The Highway Man at Sheriff Hutton has restored my faith in finding a good meal. I had the chicken supreme. The chicken was so tender and tasty. The veg was cooked to how we like it - cooked! So very good. Husband had the trio of lamb chops. Again well cooked and tender. The chips were lovely. The onion rings were beautiful. The staff are fantastic and welcoming and friendly. Brilliant. Would recommend this place to everyone. We didn’t have room for a sweet so can’t comment on them. Will have to aim for one of those!! Need to book a table as it’s very popular.

Amazing ale , I had ace ipa. Very nice. Portions are massive . You won't go hungry . Home made and. Fresh . I recommend booking in advance as it does get busy . Had the steak pie and a burger on different evenings . Both were excellent. But expect a wait as it's all cooked fresh.

Great friendly pub with good food and atmosphere nice beer garden also

I heard great things about the Highwayman Inn. Unfortunately, the evening we went (16/06/23) they postponed taking orders at 18:30 as they were too busy. We were told to check again in 30 minutes but they were still not taking orders so we ate elsewhere. The food looked delicious so we'll certainly return another time.

Fantastic place to go for a drink and or a meal, we’re hoping to have our wedding reception there next year!

Just called in with a friend for a drink at the Highwayman Inn at Sheriff Hutton. Small car park at the side. Beer garden at the back suitable for families and dogs. Oldy worldy inside and welcoming staff. A couple of locals said hello.

Another gem of a Village pub serving home cooked food. Best meal all week by far and booked again for Friday. Very busy for a Wednesday night so the locals must know something. Best home cooked chips since my grandma so that is high praise indeed.

Lovely place in a great location, the owner or landlord is a bit miserable and has no people skills. The food is delicious.

We stayed at York Meadows Campsite in our campervan and had a walk ( about a mile) to this fanatstic pub. Unfortunately there was no food on at the time due to staff holidays so can not comment on the food but looking at reviews and talking to the locals in the pub it is very good indeed. The locals are very friendly and we were made very welcome and had a lovely afternoon and early evening chatting with everyone, and also people staying in the campsite who called in as well, alovely pub, highly recommend, looking forward to coming back and trying the food. They are dog friendly and our Tyler enjoyed all the attention she was getting and loved the fire :-)

Popped in to watch the 6 Nations and received a very warm welcome from the locals and Bean. Will definitely come back and have dinner.

Called in for a quick drink after doing long Hovingham walk, both rooms we're full of diners having Sunday Lunch, so food must be good,disappointing that no seating available for just drinks, we ended up in gaming room at the back, staff not very welcoming miserable landlord and staff...won't be going back

Excellent food, the cask ale was really good, the wine selection also. Service was excellent too.

Wonderful place, welcoming and friendly

Recently stayed in the village for a few days and visited the pub a few times with the Mrs. Ate on one evening too. Food was lovely. All the staff were friendly and the locals made us feel at home when having a few games of pool.

Food was lovely, reasonably priced, nice ambiance, great friendly staff. Couldn't ask for more really. Very good.

The staff & other visitors of the pub were so friendly making us feel very welcome to their little village. They were dog friendly in the bar area & even catered to my gluten free needs! Food was delicious & wholesome!

DEAD MOTH IN BURGER ! We were having a nice family meal tonight celebrating our girls going to university, so a pretty special occassion. We chose the Highwayman in Sheriff Hutton as we have been 3-4 times before and have always had good food and a pleasant experience . Tonight was going smoothly until my daughter found a full size dead moth inside her Halloumi burger and nearly vomited! Leaving half of the meal on her plate. On noticing the moth we called waiter who took the offending plate away and apologised. The owner came over and said the following to us '' its a Monarch Moth and they are everywhere this time of year, I don't know how it got in there', then offered us a small apology and walked away. Before paying, we requested a small deduction from the bill to the young waiter - 5 minutes later the owner reappeared and said he could only offer us £5 off or a free dessert! After small negotiation he reluctanclty deducted the cost from the bill but couldn't look me in the eye and then took my card for payment which came to £92 and said "£92 please, thank you!!!" with no further apology. We kept the situation very quiet , and controlled and did not make a scene. Our lovely family meal experience had been spoilt, followed with an unbelievably poor reaction from the owner as if this was a normal everyday occurance. This experience has upset both my daughters, my partner, and myself and made us feel physically sick. We are not a family of drainers, moaners or free loaders but feel we need to write this review as we felt we were treated poorly by the owner (not the young waiters - always good) and this has put us off returning to the Pub for future meals. Warning - check your meals for dead moths as apparently they are everywhere!

We usually treat ourselves to a meal out once , sometimes twice a week at most , and The Highwayman always comes up high on our list. Firstly , Sue behind the bar makes us feel so welcome and we immediately begin to feel relaxed and ready to enjoy a truly home cooked ,tasty meal. We are not disappointed. Portions are generous and extremely satisfying. We recommend trying The Highwayman for good, home cooked, tasty food and are sure that you won't be disappointed either. Colin and Sylvia Maddison

Lovely place. Clean, friendly and superb food. We (group of four people) enjoyed it so much we ate there two nights in a row. If ever in the area again we will certainly be back. I would highly recommend a visit to the Highwayman Inn.

Had lunch there with 2 of my family members who were visiting me the food was delicious the staff brilliant service was excellent I would recommend this place good atmosphere in a lovely village

Comfy old fashioned pub. No food Sunday evening and closed on Monday. We went Sunday evening and it was very quiet.
