My wife and I went with a group of 25 friends from the Chipping Sodbury and Cesson (in France) Twinning Association We took the boat trip from Poultney Bridge and were warmly welcomed aboard the boat which was spacious on the top deck and below where there was a bar, tables and toilets. We had beautiful views of the river and bank side architecture in a lovely slow journey. Our food was excellent, a buffet for our party with tea, coffee or wine. Highly recommended.

I wanted to take the river boat trip but was unable to as it was winter and it was freezing cold and thus, I am unable to join this little tour along the beautiful river. I have read countless comments and apparently, it is all great, thus, I give an excellent rating here. Bath is indeed very beautiful and scenic and if you have a chance to cruise along this river boat, it should be simply awesome.

sitting on the top as long as the weather is fine gives the best view, the Captain gives a good guide to what we see and how the river affects the town, hot and cold drinks available on board. another upside is no fear of sea-sickness or pirates.

We invited 40 guests to enjoy my wife's birthday celebrations with us! If I'm honest wasn't sure what to expect as We have never done this before, I have to say any kind of worries were very quickly dispersed. The crew were, right from the off very courteous, service was to a good standard! We had arranged for a three course sit down meal, which again was of such a high standard, when you consider where we were. The drinks menu had plenty of choice to complement the food. Everyone had a great time and I can't thank Debbie and her team enough for making Clare day such a memorable one! Go try a trip out

We were a group of 20 out for our Christmas work party. We have been on many such evenings out and this was one of the best. The boat was clean and cosy, large enough but not too crowded. The girls running it saw to our every need but were unobtrusive. The food was the biggest surprise as, at this type of venue, you expect it to be mediocre but everyone was really impressed with the quality and enjoyed it. The cost of the evening, including the meals and drinks was very reasonable. If I had a slightly negative attitude towards anything, I think the music could have been a bit more tasteful for a disco but I am a bit of a fogey and probably don't know anything! You could do worse than going here, we had lots of fun!

We booked a Sunday lunch boat trip with friends, and spent a lovely 3 hours gently cruising up a stretch of the River Avon past the centre of Bath and back again. The weather was kind to us, and we sat up on the deck in the sunshine with our pre-lunch drinks, enjoying the beautiful sights of Bath from an angle we'd never seen before. Then it was announced that the buffet lunch was available on the lower deck. Usually there is a rush at the sound of food, but the atmosphere was so relaxed that people drifted down when they were ready, so there was never too long a queue to be fed. The lunch was of a superior quality and very tasty: cold meat, warm mini quiches and warm tiny roast potatoes, plus a selection of salads and bread. We opted to take our plates back up to the top deck to eat lunch on little wooden tables in the open air, but we could have sat at large round tables set with linen table-cloths on the lower deck if we had preferred. After a while dessert was on offer so we went back downstairs to collect our ready plated-up sweets, which were beautifully presented and delicious. Drinks and coffee were not included in the cost of the lunch cruise, but these were bought from the well-stocked bar on board at a reasonable price. There was a pleasant and very relaxed atmosphere on the Penny Lane, and everyone on the cruise seemed to be enjoying themselves. The staff were all friendly, helpful and informal, and the boat and facilities were clean and well-maintained. It was a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon, and I would heartily recommend a trip on the Penny Lane to anyone visiting Bath.

Have just been on the PennyLane River Boat for their Lazy Sunday 3 hour lunch cruise today...although it was raining we were still able to have a wonderful time in and out of the showers...we bought the cruise through Groupon but they are doing a special deal of £40 for 2 so I would advise booking up quick...the welcome we had on board was lovely and friendly...we shared round tables of up to 10 people (in this case it was to the maximum of 70 people on board which does make it a little squashed but was still fine)....it meant that we got to know people as we floated down the river...the food was wonderful...it was served buffet stye with cold meats and wonderful mini cheese tarts and the best new potatoes I have ever tasted...there was also a good selection of other salads....there is a good bar on board so you will need cash but it has a good selection of beers wines etc.Desert was a combo of white chocolate or milk chocolate mini cheesescakes with blackcurrants and a rather yummy lemon tart along with raspberry coulis....these were delicious. Not only is this a great way to spend 3 hours on a Sunday lunchtime but also somewhere I would have a birthday celebration it is that good!

Weather started off raining cats and dogs...but it didn't stop the enjoyment and buzz on board. Very pleasant cruise, overall staff were great only criticism was hearing a staff member slagging off groupon. I say this because as someone who has used groupon a LOT I have to say if it weren't for groupon I wouldn't be spending my money with you initially, you should think of it as an investment for marketing...as I would go back for sure. Food was great and the rain did stop eventually allowing dessert to be savoured above deck.

We attended a surprise 70th birthday party on the Penny Lane on Friday evening. Everything was absolutely brilliant - the guest of honour was over the moon with decorations, catering and the caring and attentive staff, as were all her guests.I would recommend The Penny Lane as a venue, the ambience, food and staff make it a lovely place to have a special celebration. The only slight disappointment was that, due to the river being too dangerous for the Penny Lane to sail, we missed that part of the evening. The staff explained that safety of passengers is of paramount importance, which of course everyone understood.

I took my mum on a Penny Lane river cruise with a buffet lunch. We really enjoyed the delicious food, lovely salads, meats and quiche, deserts, coffee etc, the views of the canal and all the fun of being on a boat. The staff were charming and helpful. Just one niggle for me and it was a product of our age, I guess, we retreated to the covered sitting area because the pop music played on the open deck of the boat was so awful and loud that it scared away the wildlife. A bit old-fashioned maybe, but I want to glide SILENTLY along a canal, looking for ducks and kingfishers, not listening to Rihanna! However, if you like pop music, I think this would be a five star event, although somewhat dependent on good weather.

We had drinks and food at the Penny Lane after we got married in Dec 11. We paid a substantial sum for a river cruise also, however we were informed that the boat was broken and couldn't move! I thought well, this happens and persued some sort of refund. We got £80 back which was a small dent in what we had paid for such a large thing to go wrong! On the night itself the toilets started leaking all over the place and our guests couldn't use them. No one at any stage even apologised to us and when we complained about this afterwards we were met with negativity. The food was average. We called it an early night and moved onto our next venue very early thank God! Having spoken to the owner afterwards, he had a shocking attitude and all he would have had to have done is to apologise nicely and give us some sort of reimbursement for affecting our special day!I'm not a complainer so trust me please. Avoid!!!

Had our Wedding reception on board The Penny Lane on 29th October, WOW, what a fantastic Day. From the moment we stepped onto the boat, we welcomed our guests on the top deck with Champagne and Canapes. We choose from a large selection just 5 canapes and all were beautifully presented and served, and tased delicious, a short trip to the Weir so all the guests could takein the atmosphere, then below decks for the main event and a two hour cruise down the River Avon. Our guests choose their food with their RSVP, a choice of Carved Fillet of Beef or Sea Bass with Scallops and Pancetta, both served with Truffle Potato Cake and seasonal Veg. This food was 5 star, all our guests commented on how gorgeous the food was and couldn't believe they could turn out food to that standard in such a small kitchen. Presented like any fine dining we have had! The Sweets were just as gorgeous and very large portions, in fact I personally had the Cheese and Biscuits, I counted 6 different cheeses on my plate along with all the extras, fantastic. The whole day from reception to Evening Party went smoothly and all thanks to the Staff on board. Andrea was our main contact from Day one and deserves a special mention, very proffessional, warm and welcoming, and knew before hand without any explainning from 'Bridezilla' what to do. Saturday 24th September - We set off from Taunton for Bath with Groupon Voucher in hand to have what was to be a fantastic afternoon aboard The Penny Lane with the crew. On reaching North Parade Bridge we waited in the sun along with the other passengers to eagerily board the boat and start our trip down the river. We were greated by the two hostesses who immediately told us where to find the bar and along with the other passengers we bought our drinks and sat chatting to each other on deck with drinks and cameras at the ready. We cruised slowly down the river until we were told that lunch was being served . We were treated to an ample cold buffet which was followed by a selection of yummy desserts and drinks were always on hand at the bar. We could not fault the food it was delicious. We had a lovely day mixing with new people and found the organisers/hostesses to be very approachable, friendly and always happy to answer the passengers questions in a relaxed but informative way. There were plenty of laughs along the way on our trip.We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and had a lovely afternoon on such a lovely sunny day with lovely people and would highly recommend this river trip on The Penny Lane to anybody and indeed will be back to enjoy it again next year ourselves.Nikki and Steve

We were also Groupon customers but any doubts I might have had about it being a cut price deal were quickly dispelled. The staff were friendly, helpful and informative; a misunderstanding over my drink was put right without missing a beat. The food was extremely good - any temptation to segregate the Groupon's or cut the budget was resisted it was delicious - a good choice, very well presented and served - perhaps because our trip had the good manners not to rush the buffet all went very well. People sitting near us were vegetarian and seemed equally happy, someone who didn't eat desserts was made a hot savory instead. I have already recommended the boat to friends who visit Bath.

I fully disagree with the comments already left with regards to the penny lane. My partner and I had a beautiful afternoon on the boat, luckily it was amazing weather and the people were all elderly therefore quite, respectful and polite. It was social yet private and I had a wonderful time. The food was devine. I dont't know about anyone else but I didn't find it was a struggle to get to the food. If people weren't so greedy and realised that there was plenty of food for everyone they would not have rushed to the buffet and been jammed amongst other people. I didn't notice the despute in price but to be honest it was worth every penny. It is a small boat, but what do people expect? It was a lovely experience and I reccommend it to everyone (apart from small children as they may struggle to keep occupied for the whole afternoon)Thank you Penny Lane.

This was a Groupon booking with a selection of dates provided. We went yesterday and immedetly realised that everyone there was a Groupon booking for the entire boat. Groupon had listed this with a 'real' value of £40pp but on the notice board it clearly stated that it was £25pp so not such a bargain afterall. Owing to the mass booking and the price inconsistancy we began to think that maybe the food /service would be scaled down in accordance with the price we had paid. The cruise bit was ok but the food part was truly shambolic, 70 people queing to get their megre buffett whilst others trying to get past to sit at the over crammed tables whilst carrying plates. Imagine wanting to get to the loo on an aeropane when the food trolly is in the aisle and you'll get the picture !We were sitting at a table for eight but they had squeezed another couple of chairs in making it rather uncomfy for everyone. However what reallly lets this outfit down are the unprofessional. loud mouthed women who appear to run the show.Owing to a miscalculation on their behalf and lack of portion control there was an insuficient number of puddings. When a chap from our table complained one of the women started screeching at him about what good value it was and the fact that she could chuck him off the boat at the next lock if he didn't like it ! We could not believe her behaviour and frankly did not want to listen to her screeching over the muzak and hum of conversations from the other diners so my wife went over and told her just that. This did not go down well and the woman then verbally attacked my wife at the table in front of me and the other diners. Obviously my wife and I were livid about the whole situation and were discussing it with other diners on our table when the other woman came out and threatened to evict my wife from the boat if she did not shut up !The moral of this tale of woe is that if per chance you do stupidly go on this boat via a 'deal' then do not complain These women have no customer service skills whatsoever. They simply cannot take any critical remarks at all and, should you dare to complain, will threaten to make you leave the boat when you are in the middle of nowhere. P.S my wife is also in a plaster cast on her right arm making her semi disabled at the moment , sure the local papers would have loved that story !
