We decided to go here on a Saturday lunch time. After ordering our drinks the bar staff proceeded to tell us that they wouldn't be serving food until 2PM which was far too late for us. Seemed like a rip off, just wanted our money for the drinks. The manager was also sat there counting his money, this could have been done on a Monday afternoon when there aren't any customers. Won't be returning.

Lived in efford 21 years, and today was the first time i went into the Penguin. My partner frequented loads years ago! Have to say, my visit today was lovely. The staff are amazing, and the food and the service was totally excellant. Highly recommend. AND, theres easy parking in their own car parking area. Hopefully, my partner will treat me to a meal out at the Penguin again soon.

I have just got back from my meal at the penguin. Firstly, the couple that owned this restaurant was so kind welcoming and had great customer service. The food was of the highest quality well presented and tasted delicious. all of the food was reasonably priced, and you could tell that he hadn’t skimped on good quality ingredients either. For three main courses, two desserts, two alcoholic drinks, two soft drinks and a side it was under £70.

Service was shocking, over an hour wait for food and the place was pretty much empty.Worst thing was they brought adult meals out before the kids meals.Food is over rated and dry as Gandhi’s flip flop.Staggered eating, reminded me of being in Thailand!

Was supposed to be a nice family meal where everyone ate together………..what we got was a long wait and staggered meals which meant some had finished even before everyone had their meal. Kids were last to come out and for the money wasn’t worth it. Kids burgers were thin and the lasagne was dry as a nuns……………,, Would never return

Had the most wonderful meal, freshly cooked and a taste to die for, this was the salmon dish. My wife is vegetarian and had a good choice on the menu and thoroughly enjoyed her food. The food is excellent and fresh and very reasonably priced. Will be going back on a regular basis.

We came for afternoon food/drinks. The beer garden was pleasant. There was a good choice on the food and drinks menu. Prices were average. I felt the service let the place down a little. There was one extremely friendly waitress (blonde hair), but the others were really quite rude, it was also clear that the staff knew most of the (somewhat unpleasant) customers and were often sitting down with them etc instead of working. We'd probably return as the food/drinks were good, but the service needs some work.

We visited on Halloween thinking it would be quiet but quite the opposite. No expense spared on deco, such fun with all the staff dressed up in scary stuff. A party of four we ate in the bar which was surprisingly lovely. Three of us chose the pie of the day. It was so good! A true pie...crust top and bottom. It was served with mash and green beans but we all asked for chips. This was no problem. The pie was so good and we asked if it was made on the premises, it was, what a treat. We will be back. Thank you the Penguin, our new local.

We came in as a large group with a 6year old and 1 year old for lunch. The staff are so friendly and the atmosphere is so much better than with the previous owners. Nothing was too much hassle, there wasn't a long wait for the food and when it came it was fantastic! Being a veggie I don't normally have the substitute for the roast but the chef at The Penguin nailed the nut roast! The cauliflower cheese was so good and a huge portion - so good i took some home in a take out box! Don't be put off by the price of the food, the quality reflects this (unlike previous owners who had overpriced food with nothing special on the menu to warrant it.) If you want a cheap meal then head to spoons up the road on the plain, but if you want a great atmosphere, quality food & great service The Penguin is where to go. It manages to keep the good old pub vibe whilst also providing high quality food and service!

Since it has changed hands the atmosphere has returned to that of a community venue. Great quiz nights, value for money food and drinks at a good price too. Great collection of gins!!! I feel lucky to have such a great local. The owner does so much with the community and local charities in mind.

This is our local so it's the second time we tried it under new management. I didn't really enjoy the food this time round which is a shame as it's a lovely pub. We both had a burger but found it a little greasy. I also found it extremely expensive. The penguin burger was £15 which I think is a tad steep for the location. In town I normally pay about £10 for a similar size burger. Also think the starters are lacking choice. Hate to moan as would like the place to do well but I just think it's missing something. I enjoyed the food more with the previous owners. Hopefully we will give the roast a go as they were always amazing

Had family down for the weekend and decided to give the penguin a try again as under new management. We are a 5 Minuit walk away and had found before the food and atmosphere quite disappointing, food was ok. Anyway the meals did not disappoint 3 people had the beef which I tried, I don’t like beef as a rule but this was amazing like it had been slow cooked and fell apart. I had the chicken which was equally amazing, safe to say we were not disappointed and would 100% go back

We decided to pop in to the Penguin for a meal on our way home. Glad we did, when we walked in the barman smiled & greeted us, we asked for a table, as he grabbed menu boards & took us to a table he told us the specials. When we were seated he asked what we'd like to drink. The place wasn't packed but it was reasonably busy but he seemed to have time for everyone which is a rare skill. I had the special BBQ chicken burger with a side if onion rings, my husband had a steak burger. Well we didn't know whether to eat them or climb them?? The chicken burger was a breast of chicken with bacon, cheese & BBQ sauce more like hunters chicken in a bun. Very tasty the steak burger was just as good. Our onion rings took a while to come out but the guy came over to apologies as he had dropped them on the way out of the kitchen. When they arrived they were huge!! great big thick onion slices battered & deep fried. We took some home as there was too many. So all in all a very good experience, glad we followed our impulse.

Good parking. Popped in today- lovely welcome. Even for our dog. Nice relaxed atmosphere. We ordered a variety of food which was all excellent. I am on a strict diet and I asked if chef could rustle me up a fresh salad with no dressing. What appeared was beautifully presented and just what I asked for. Friendly chap running the show on quite a quiet lunchtime.

Being locals this has been our pub for years, we’d come here a couple times a month. After reopening under the new management we are here regularly now. The staff are just so welcoming and friendly, Lovely to walk through the front door and get greeted by them all, nothing is to much trouble . The food is just superb, much better than the Penguin Lounge!! The Penguin has really been turned around!! Our favourite place to spend our time together.

The team who had operated this pub with food for a few years left a month or so ago to open a healthy food restaurant on the Barbican. After barely a few days closure the Penguin reopened with new management and there are positive signs that a lot of effort to renew the pace and attracts a wide mixture of customers. We have yet to sample the menu but there is a good range of well kept predictable beers etc and the staff are friendly. The pub has no parking except outside houses on the surrounding residential roads. It is no more than 10 minutes walk down from Mutley Plain but in that time you could also walk into town. The Penguin is a bit of an oasis in what has become a desert for drinking places. I might come down here to meet mates of for an event but it’s not somewhere I would see as being a local or go to venue. It looks and feels a bit like it would fit better into a vast satellite housing estate with its own big car park.
