Simply awful. Food cold and poor quality. Never seen a skinnier piece of fish or drier steak. Thank goodness there was a decent beer.

Sorry to say but we did not have a great experience, staff seemed friendly but could not provide an average customer service. Food was way below standard, felt like the chef was off and the kitchen porter was cooking. I don't think there is a need for details. It is a shame really as the place looks lovely.

I've been here twice with a friend in the last couple months, both with lasting impressions. Strap yourself in! The first time, we ordered 'lunch size' meals. When the food arrived it became apparent 'lunch size' was Pelican-hieroglyphic for 'child's portion'. The fish and chips my friend ordered resembled a sad little battered sausage with an equally depraved entourage of chips, and the steak sandwich I ordered, rather graciously, saved me from a second slice of bread (my primitive brain always assumed serving a single slice of bread amounted to 'steak on toast' - alas, I am not a man of culture). Today, we returned - fuelled by our ill-informed desire to support local business. With rumbling tummies we opted for the big-boy portions. To our delight, these were bigger than the 'lunch size' portions of yestermonth, but to our dismay, not by much. My friend ordered fish and chips again, eager to right the wrongs of the past - but the fish was more batter than it was actually fish, the chips were unsuccessful in their efforts to recruit many more members to their entourage and the thimble of tartar sauce was predominantly occupied by several whole capers that looked rather pleased with themselves - but to be fair, my friend was able to extract two full teaspoons of mushy peas with a syringe from the cute little ramekin it was served in. I had ordered the Korean chicken burger, that previously teased me on the menu. When it arrived, the chips were served in a trendy pot to remind me just how fashionable the whole affair was - but neglected their duty to satiate my appetite once again. The minimalist presentation also caught my eye, it's just so boorish for a perfectly bare porcelain plate to be smeared by an attractive garnish. The burger itself seemed somewhat palatable, but upon closer inspection with the aid of a microscope, I was able to identify a wafer thin slice of chicken in the mix - I can only thank the senior Pelican management for making the executive decision to spare me the injustice of paying £16 for a juicy and succulent steak I may accidentally sink my teeth into. The Pelican is pricing itself as a Bistro Pub, which ensures mind blowing-flavour in exchange for mind-blowing prices. And yet, I must commend their commercial success in delivering only half of this equation - modern solutions for modern problems I say! My friend and I usually get a rewarding high from burning our money (though that's probably because the notes are made from fancy wash-proof plastic now). However, when the Pelican offered us the same opportunity in exchange for war-time rations we jumped at the chance. If you're looking to trim some belly fat but still entertain the facade that the cost of living hasn't hurt your bank balance, they've got your back! But on reflection, we're still pretty hungry. It must be Putin's fault - I'm sure the Pelican has devoted most of its resources in supporting Ukraine. I generously donated an extra star because although the food left me wanting, it did not leave me hanging over the toilet. Looking forward, the holy Mecca of KFC beckons once more - please forgive our lack of faith, Imam Sanders.

Myself and two friends had bed and breakfast and found the evening meals very good and well priced for the area. After a good nights sleep we went out early before breakfast, on returning the chef had finished It was no trouble to the staff and they provided us with a good substantial breakfast. We found our two rooms very comfortable and clean . The staff were friendly and professional . We would not hesitate to use the Pelican Inn again and pass their details on to other members of our club. It is a few miles from our site but worth the extra travelling. I’ve never really been sure why I keep giving The Pelican the benefit of the doubt. It may be that we’re local and we miss the pub in our village, it may just be that I’ve just caught them on numerous off days, or that I’m ever-hopeful things will be different, but after the welcome we were given this weekend, I’ve simply run out of patience and won’t be doing so again.

I visited this restaurant tonight with 2 other adults and 2 dogs. I have been here before and was impressed that dogs were welcomed inside and the food was really nice. Tonight was a little disappointing, we were made very welcome, the dogs got a dish of water, it was a very quiet evening but it took forever to order and get our food. Once it arrived it was nice but portion sizes are quite small and a little expensive , not what we would expect back home in Yorkshire. I ordered gammon- it comes with chips peas and a grilled tomato, fried egg and mushrooms were an extra £1 each (no pineapple option) where we usually go out back home it would all have been included. Price aside it was all cooked well so no real complaints there. We ordered dessert and this is where I feel they missed the target, there cannot have been more than 10 people in the pub ordering food, yet it took nearly 30 minutes from ordering to receiving dessert. They weren’t complicated desserts just an Eton mess and a sticky toffee pudding, I’m guessing they forgot about us, I checked with them after 20 mins and was told it was being sorted, yet it still took another 10 mins or so. If they sort out the speed of service then I would have marked them higher but it took nearly 2 hours to get 2 courses which is pretty poor.

I asked what was the reason and was told that they had had bookings for 15 covers, but had had to cook 40 covers. I am still bemused that a restaurant would not be able to cope with walk in diners.

We went today as a table of 8 with 2 children, one of whom is 2. The waitress and bar staff made the mother, my sister in law feel quite uncomfortable audibly tutting as the little boy wandered near our table. I have to say he was as good as gold but they made us feel like we were an annoyance. The food was good enough but I am sorry you don’t need the attitude to go with it. Very disappointed with the customer service. Upsetting an 80 year old lady over food is not good business. If a customer is unhappy they are well within their rights to complain & have food cooked how they would like. I really hope the manger feels ashamed of how she treated an elderly customer. We had hoped to sit in the large garden and enjoy the summer sun but even so we were made welcome and had a nice table in the centre of the bar which was pretty busy for a damp mid week day. The menu looked pretty tempting across the board and all of us had a very good meal. I didn't expect it but my curry was actually outstanding. The draft beers were also good. I'd been here once before, in a large group, and was impressed not only by the quality of the food but also by their ability to serve c. 30 people out in the garden pre-ordered meals (by 11.00, when we left for a walk, to eat at 13.00) in no more than 15 minutes: so I booked online for a lunch with two friends over from Australia who needed to meet near Ramsbury. Four different main courses, all well received; sensible choice of beers - one a traditional bitter, the other a golden ale - for drivers; good wines by the glass; and excellent coffee. My wife & I plan to go back for one of the local walks they promote in their own brochure.

After trying to book a table by phone I got an answerphone message, I left a message requesting a table and a call back, which I never received. We decided to go anyway and chance it, when we arrived I explained that we had called and the bar lady was quite off and indifferent - saying they were busy, but it certainly didn't look that way. We then said we would like to eat in the garden. (We had been here a few years back and the garden was an amazing feature then, with ducks in a lovely pond leading to the river.) This sadly has been let go and was very overgrown with no visible wildlife.I had chicken off the specials board and it said it was half a chicken. When it arrived it was a large chicken leg and a large wing.( I did expect a bit of breast meat too!) Both leg and wing were red and very raw near the bone. I told the waitress and she took it back to the kitchen and the chef said he would put it back in the oven, but the chef refused to acknowledge that it wasn't done. It was returned to me a few minutes later but was still raw in places and the fries were now cold. (I was unable to eat most of my meal.)My daughter had a panini which was chicken and chorizo. this was so dry she couldn't eat it! I ordered fries with this which they didn't bring out, they said I hadn't ordered them but I know for sure I did. As we were eating in the garden we had to pay before the meal and when they brought out the missing fries. these were wrong too they should have been skinny fries and they brought large chips, but we let this one go as by then we just wanted get though the meal ASAP. They also brought a bill for them, although it was their mistake, there was no apology. My daughters boyfriend went to the bar to get a second round of drinks, his meal was cold before he returned as it took him so long to be served, yet there were very few people in the pub, actually similar customer/staff ratio. Is it not usual for the waitress to ask if drinks are required and bring them to you? Bar, waiting and kitchen staff all left a lot to be desired.Won't be back in a hurry!

Ok the price is slightly more expensive then most places but the food was lovely we didn't really mind. Husband had the sausages and mash for £11.00 and I had the mushroom tangetali for £12.50 but it did include garlic bread which was delicious. Only down bit was the amount of traffic that goes by. We came here from a local village nearby. Huge car park and very easy to find on the busy A4 road from hungerford to Marlborough. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our table. The place was very quiet with only 3/4 other tables and the the atmosphere hits you as soon as you enter, which is a shame, it's a big place with large bar towards the end side. I had plaice and my partner had venison pie. They were Fantastic. Plaice was cooked well, the pie was very filling too. A selection of winter vegetables was also nice touch. The prices do represent what the pub is, very good value for the area. My only fault would be why there was no atmosphere and was so quiet for a Friday. I didn't see anyone in the bar. The service was warm and friendly. I hope the owners could boost trade as the pub is very easily found, and needs custom.

One pointedly ignored us and when the other could be bothered to look up from her laptop she served us our drinks but would not open a tab for when we had chosen our food.We made the mistake of not looking at the menu before ordering our drinks and it was only after we had sat down in the pleasant beer garden that we discovered that they make no provision for vegetarians. I returned to the bar to ask if they could prepare something for us and although the barmaid could quite easily see me and must have been aware that we would want some food, she was again too busy with her laptop. So we finished our drinks and left. We found an excellent pub a few miles away, the Red Lion in Axford, which we highly recommend for service and 'going the extra mile'.

We were looking forward to our lunch, and have in the past found the fish pie delicious. This time however, it was dire. Mine didn't even look cooked. The fish was hot in places and cooler in others, usually a sure sign of microwaved food which hasn't been stirred. The mash which presumably had been added later was lukewarm and the usually delicious cheesy topping was a scattering of Parmesan which had simply been zapped under the grill. The coffee was very good, as was the service. Presentation was also fine.I hope we went on an off day, but if not, their new chef needs some retraining.

Visited 9th April 2016 with my grandson. Plenty of spare tables so ordered drinks and looked at the menu. As we were on a tight schedule we waited 10-15 minutes then I asked if we could place our order. I was amazed to be told that they would get round to us - they were doing the booked tables first. I said we were on a tight schedule and was told again that they had a table of 6 booked in. With no indication of when we would get served I said "OK, we'll find somewhere else". No sooner had I sat down than the waitress followed and asked what we wanted. I ordered soup and a roll, my grandson fish and chips. Still had to wait a while but when it arrived the chips had been cremated. Half were inedible and were left on the side of the plate. The quality of the food was very average. For that, a bitter lemon and a pint of beer the charge was £22.05. At no time did the staff smile or have a pleasant word and when I had asked if I could place an order three of the waitresses were just standing chatting behind the till.I much prefer to do positive reviews but I'm afraid I couldn't find much that was positive about this experience. Although my grandson said that the fish was ok. So disappointing as I am moving into the area and had hoped this might be my local.

Staff very friendly and welcoming. We booked a table with our dog and they were so organised they had a bowl of water waiting for him ! Service was swift and our starters were very good. Mains however were a little disappointing. Presentation was excellent but the food was not up to the same standard. Chips were soggy, chicken nuggets, burger was dry and so was the lasagne. It was very average. Plenty of space to park. Clean and well maintained decor. A short walk to the canal for a good walk. Overall average.

The last time I ate here was 20 years ago when it was owned by Johnny Morris and it was Chinese food. Now? It is welcoming and dog friendly (in the bar area) Menu is not extensive but well chosen with decent vegetarian choices Prices are reasonable When I visited they had two cask beers on tap with Doom Bar available

Really impressed with the coffee here, which is very rare in a pub. Easter Sunday meal for 4 of us was also very good. Lovely meeting place, especially in the summer!

We have using The Pelican for many years as a half way stop for lunch when travelling along the A4. The food and great selection of wines and beers never ceases to amaze me.You also have a friendly staff who are efficient and attentive. In the winter it is very cosy, especially for Sunday Lunch. It is summer that this lovely pub reaches it's climax with plenty of seating with tables outside. We have eaten many lunches in the garden on a sunny day and enjoyed seeing the ducks that wander about looking for tit-bits.Another important part of this pub is that it has two large car parking areas on both sides of the pub with easy access from the road. I can't wait to stop there again. We could stop over night in one of their lovely rooms, but being as we live not too far away, we don't have to.

Went for lunch this week at the Pelican and was pleased to find a gluten free selection in the menu, although limited. Was amazed that they had listed gluten free brioche and got quit excited by the prospect. Spoke to the waitress only to be told that was not the case so ordered a gluten free sandwich instead. 10 minutes later was informed sorry no bread. So had to rethink and ordered ham egg and chips which was listed as gf. I did ask the waitress to check the chips would be fried in separate oil as I am coeliac and she went off to speak to the chef and returned saying "of course". My meal turned up and I started to eat, the chips were very crispy and very oily and had the taste of old oil but I ate a few, maybe five, then started to feel unwell. After we left and I returned home I was violently sick, with all e system of being glutened. I just wish these establishments would train and learn about gluten and coeliac disease.

What a Gem!I had the pleasure of eating here last night (Friday 6th) with my wife and what a wonderful choice it was! When we arrived we were greeted by a young girl who direct us to the bar to get some drinks. The lady on the bar was very helpful and polite. We then headed back down to the restaurant area and the same young girl who greeted us sat us down with some menus, and from that moment we didn't have to get out of our seats for anything, we were brought some water without having to ask, nothing was too much trouble and the young girl was very helpful and chatty, (if she see this thank you for the tip about parking!) her recommendations were great. So we order our starters garlic mushrooms and gravlax it arrived in no time and was amazing, I had the mushrooms which was slightly rich but very tasty! For mains we had fish and chips and chicken, again the wait was minimal what I'd expect for such fresh food. The fish was perfect I find a lot of places the fish can be very greasy but not here the batter was golden and crisp and the fish was so tasteful! my wives chicken was also very good she said it was just too much for her which is better than not enough. Overall the pelican in my opinion have got it right! The service was amazing the food was delicious and the location is perfect! Keep up the great work and look forward to coming back.

Our recent visits with friends for evening meals have been very good. A warm friendly atmosphere with good service and food that would do justice to more expensive establishments at a most acceptable cost.

We recently had lunch here whilst travelling through the area. We were made welcome and enjoyed our lunch from the bar menu in a pleasant atmosphere. It is very much pub grub but that is exactly what we needed. Very reasonable prices and the food was good quality, the chips were particularly yummy.

Paid a second visit for a meal on a week day evening. It was like a different establishment. We had a single waitress who was attentive, well informed and with an appropriate humour. The food was good and plentiful. I have noticed that the majority of negative reviews like mine were for Sunday lunch. It would be nice to think that the management would read these and address the issues.

Called in to see friends on our return leg of a European trip - hungry and tired - we where given a warm friendly welcome, some welcome beer and wine, some gorgeous food and a truly comfortable bed (didn't want to get up), when we did, we missed breakfast but where offered some and we gladly had some thick bacon butties and coffee to set us up for our drive up north!.Lovely pub, great atmosphere and great food (we had the steak pie and fish pie - Propper steak pie, not in a pot with a lid) - thank you from 2 weary travellers and see you at new year xx

When tasked with the job of finding a location for a family lunch for 7 on Saturday 5th September 2015 that could accommodate a family member with mobility issues and a love for real ale I decided to try The Pelican. To test the water we ate there as a party of 4 on a weekday lunchtime - the service was prompt and attentive, the food was delicious. Generous portion sizes and all home cooked freshly. The pub it self is large and the tables are well spaced out which gives it a nice feel. I also noted how clean the place was from the bar area right through to the toilet facilities.I quickly decided that we would book for our lunch on 5th. I called to book a table letting the staff know that we would need a table close to the door and mens facilities due to our family members mobility issues and we were told it would not be a problem. We were seated at a nice table that was exactly what I had requested without the 'Mens' being in anyway intrusive. One of our party was stuck in traffic and even though we didn't order until well after the time we had booked for the staff were supper chilled and happy to keep our drinks topped up until we were ready to order. Again the food was delicious, great portion sizes and very fresh. The desert menu was devoured by my family of gannets with lots of yumyums and even I was tempted into 2 scoops of jaffa cake ice-cream even though my diet didn't permit! So to set it out the positives that I believe The Pelican has going for it are -Large car park, Nice outside area, Friendly helpful staff, Great food, Great portion sizes, Fresh produce, Clean, Mobility access friendly, Dog friendly. Lovely atmosphere all round. Thanks to the staff for a job well done and we will be back soon.

Went for Sunday lunch with my husband and sister who has moved nearby. Initial impression was of pleasant atmosphere, we had booked and were shown to our table by the first of 6 members of staff to serve us. They were a real mix of very friendly and helpful to downright abrupt and one who didn't have a clue as to what dishes consisted of. As a different person came to our table each time it was difficult to maintain continuity. We were asked at the end of our meal if we would like teas/coffees and asked for 2 peppermint teas, they didn't materialise so decided not to bother, the same lady then asked us the same question, ironic, so we declined and asked for the bill, amazingly we had been charged for the teas we hadn't had. They were deducted. To the food, surely the best bit about roast potatoes is that they are crispy on the outside. So why serve them underneath the slices of roast meat with gravy on top? It all looked very chefy piled up as is the fashion but it made the potatoes soggy. When the first dish of vegetables came I asked whether it was possible to have the other without cheese, the look I got was as if I asked for something really extraordinary, no yes nor or I'll see what I can do, just a grunt. My request was successful. The main course was fine apart from the aforementioned. Desserts were varied. The berry mess was thoroughly enjoyed by my sister and was a decent sized portion. My husband had the selection of ice creams and from the way the waitress spoke he expected at least 2 possibly 3 scoops. He got 2 of the scantest scoops you'll see. I chose the lemon tart, I didn't think it was a taster menu but the size of my slice of tart would suggest it was, it was barely an inch wide at the crust end, with a smear of coulis a physalis for decoration and some cream, it was lovely but hardly worth the money. All in all I was left with the feeling that this could so easily have been a lovely meal and experience. Close but no cigar. I hope if management read this they will take it on board as kindly meant constructive criticism. One waiting member of staff per table, to establish a relationship with diners would be a great start.

We visited the Pelican for Sunday lunch. WE ordered one beef and one chicken roast. After waiting for at least half an hour for the meal to arrive, we wished that we hadn't bothered! The beef was very fatty, I would say that half of it was fat!! The vegetables and the rest of the meal were almost cold. There was hardly any gravy and the small dish of vegetables that were for 2 people were scarcely enough for one.!! My partner ordered chicken, it looked like the remains of a chicken that would be offered to my cat, we expected nice slices of chicken breast, IT WAS NOT!!. WE THOUGHT THAT THE PRICE OF DRINKS was extortionate, £11 for a glass of chardonnay and a pint of cider! And at £12.50 per roast we expected far better. All in all the whole experience was very disappointing indeed and we shall not be returning.

Visited the pelican on a sunday, thought we'd have the roast. Lovely looking pub with well kept gardens, spaced out tables. Ordered glass of white wine and pint of cider. 11 pound !!!! couldn't believe it. Ordered two roasts, sat outside and waited and waited. When the food did arrive, barely warm, we were both dissapointed . fatty beef and what looked like left over chicken bits, hardly any gravy and dish of veg barely enough for one never mind two. Never again !

Met with friends for lunch at the Pelican yesterday. We sat in the lovely garden enjoying a drink before going in to eat. Liked the spacious dining space and the very well- looked after feel of the interior. The food was excellent - my salmon was cooked perfectly with fresh vegetables. My partner had the fish pie which he is still raving about today. The lemon tart is fantastic. I would go back just for the dessert. A very nice meal, friendly staff and good service.

Stopped here on our way to Hungerford Thursday afternoon. Walking up to the building I couldn't help but notice how well looked after the grounds were. Once we walked in the door we were greeted by a very polite and young girl behind the bar, we asked if we could have some food but unfortunately the kitchen was closed. We decided to have some drinks anyway, the young girl was extremely helpful in helping my mother decided on a wine, and her recommendation was great! She was very chatty and welcoming. We took our drinks outside to enjoy the weather and gardens, however my mother was starting to get a bit peckish so we made the decision to drive on into Hungerford, we asked to have a look at the menu before we left and it looked lovely, the young girl gave us a card as we said we would be back. It was really refreshing to see such a relaxed pub, with staff clearly well trained, and who show a genuine interest. I look forward to coming to eat here with my family. Thank you for a welcoming afternoon with plenty of chat.

We visited today for Sunday lunch with family we hadn't seen for a while - 8 adults and our 11 month old baby. Initially things looked positive - the menu sounded amazing and we were well looked after. 4 of us ordered starters and waited a good half an hour for them to arrive. When they did they were average at best - overcooked and rather tasteless. It then took another good half an hour/40 mins for the main courses to arrive, baring in mind most of the party hadn't had starters and by this point were ravenous (an hour and 20mins after we had arrived). Most of the party had a roast dinner. My husband's roast beef was stone cold - to the extent he was convinced it was from the fridge. It was a murky grey colour too - not at all appetising. He asked for it to be reheated. When it returned, it was the same temperature. There is no way the plate had been near anything hot, and presumably just did a lap of the kitchen before being returned to him. His food was in edible, so he returned it and sharedmy venison burger (which was overdone and tough, and the chips were cold and dry). All the roasts were of the same temperature as my husband's - the gravy had a skin on it and the potatoes were cold with congealed fat on them. The vegetables were actually very tasty and piping hot, BUT were served 5/10mins after the cold dinners were given to us...!The one star I have given is due to how our complaint was dealt with. A substantial amount was deducted from our bill and the manageress was polite and apologetic. It's a real shame as the pub has the potential to be outstanding. But sadly the food is in edible and overpriced. They are desperately trying to be something they are not, and unless things change dramatically, we won't be returning.

Food was very good ! Roast pork belly was excellent and imaginative with chorizo and black pudding. Macaroni Cheese was superb, with mushrooms and onions and cream. Both dishes were well thought out and the chief definitely put his own stamp on these dishes!Mid week lunch, very good, steak sandwich and cheese and pickle sandwich. Large portions, lovely bread, mature Cheese and steak melted in mouth. One negative, i only had an hour for lunch and it took 20 mins to come out. Perhaps i should have mention this when i ordered. Decided to stop for lunch and we were not disappointed. We chose the fish pie topped with creamed potato and cheese, absolutely delicious and the steak and ale pie served with mash, peas and a small jug of gravy, clean plates from both. There was a wait of 30 minutes before the food arrived, although there didn't seem to be too many people to be served. The menu was very good and there was a number of items we could have chosen. Small plates of 3 items also available and a comment from another diner on receiving the small fish and chips was that it was very generous for a small plate.

The Pelican was suggested by the friends we were having lunch with. Checking Trip Advisor reviews led me to fear the worse. Not so. We were welcomed by friendly staff. The food selection was good and the price reflected the good quality. Individually we ordered the fish platter, slow cooked pork belly and lasagne. Desserts, Pelican Mess and Bakewell Tart and clotted cream. Wine and coffee all good.No complaints at all. Will visit again.Another important point, excellent, plentiful car parking.

Just passing through and thought we'd stop for a bite to eat staff were miserable took 25 mins before anyone took our order after being told to sit and wait then told we'd be served after the tables that booked had been served. It took 35 min for the food to arrive, the food was passable but then anything would taste ok after that wait there was a hair in my partners salad which was a struggle to get an apology for and no discount and during the whole experience we were never asked how our food was. We stopped for a meal early evening. The barstaff was helpful and allowed my wife to taste a drop of wine before committing to buy a large glass, nice touch! The food we had was decidedly average. The presentation was pleasing but with several questionable quality ingredients notably, plastic bread, tasteless prawns and some of the smoked salmon was clearly an economy cut. This pub has the location and the character to be a superb venue, but at this standard we cannot say we will return.

This pub is in a nice location on the Bath Road between Hungerford and Marlborough. The staff were friendly and helpful - especially as we were a large crowd that arrived without having booked. We only had a sandwich lunch, which looked nicely presented with all the trimmings, and the bread was beautifully fresh. However the taste of the ham was almost drowned by the over-generous helping of pickle. Others who had different fillings experienced a similar problem. Otherwise a pleasant visit

We visited the Pelican on a Sunday and had lunch that was served by polite staff. The food met with our expectations for a pub roast andthe price paid. These are only our observations on the day and considering that there are some Gastro pubs in the nearby area this is an unpretentious pub with a large garden and reasonably priced food. Reading some other reviews maybe days other than Sunday would be good to visit.
