Popped in for a wee lunch on a sunny afternoon in Edinburgh. The Pear Tree was busy which is good and the queue at the bar moved quite quickly. We ordered One Fish & Chips, One Beef burger with Chunky Chips and a pint of Tennent’s Lager. A nice atmosphere, nice staff & nice food, at a good price, thanks.

Very disappointed as a large group of us emailed ahead to confirm a specific Olympic women’s football game would be played on the outdoor screen, we were told that it could be and this was also confirmed with a phone call on the day. We arrived (over a dozen people) and mentioned it would be starting at 6pm and was told that it wasn’t on their schedule so they wouldn’t put it on. The staff member was abrupt and eventually called the events manager who we had emailed with but couldn’t get through to him, the email chain was shown to her (where he had confirmed they had the access to the channel and would play it) but she said she wouldn’t put the game on without his verbal confirmation. By this stage we’d all ordered food and drinks so couldn’t leave to go elsewhere to watch, so had to watch the game on a mobile phone. The duty manager was also disappointingly rude/dismissive about it. Very disappointing experience all round and a shame as we were regular customers.

I've been coming to peartree for years, especially in the summer and especially for sport. Extremely disappointed by the treatment of our group by staff today, especially the duty manager. We had arranged by email to watch the Women's Football for the Olympics, and "Brian" confirmed all set to go at 6pm on the 31st. We arrived, and witnessed another group request to put a different sport on. They switched over no trouble. We spoke with the Duty Manager, showed them the email, and she was incredibly rude and dismissive saying that she didn't have record of that, people asked for the gymnastics, and even argued that the women's football wasn't even on. I showed her the email, she said the would speak with "Brian" and nothing happened. We followed up several times and were rudely told they didn't have record, refused to acknowledge the email, and refused to put the football on. With most of us having intense retail or hospo experience we were kind but firm about our request, and were met by rudeness and disrespect by the Duty Manager. Some serious training needs to be given to anyone there who would like to call themselves supervisor or duty manager, as the treatment to our group was outrageous. Sad that the reputation and our love of this pub can be tarnished by a couple people's poor planning and behaviour.

Although the main attraction of this historic pub is the large courtyard (with covered areas) and enormous screen to watch sporting events, don't overlook the interior which is very nice. This is is going to be one of the most expensive places to drink in Edinburgh. Second, the service is absolutely rubbish, they have so many people that the staff do not care how they treat you, I think they even are a little bit rude. The staff was nice and offered to bring fresh cooked ones only to be exactly the same dry meat taste. Over cooked and no flavour at all. The burger meat was dry as well. This is a great place to watch sport if the weather is good; large beer garden at the front of the entrance to the pub with a giant TV and nice atmosphere when busy, as it usually is when the weather is good. The beer on offer is decent, with plenty of non-alcoholic drinks available too. The fish and chips is superb. One of the best I’ve had in Edinburgh. The rest of the items on the menu is what you would expect from a pub. Personally didn’t think anything looked as good as the fish and chips but may be wrong here. If you fancy a ‘chippy’ while basking in the sun and watching sport then this is the place for you. Even if sport and sun isn’t your thing, I’d say it’s worth it just for the fish and chips.

A lovely pub that was recommended by a friend. We were a family of 4 including a 15 year old and 7 year old and we wanted somewhere for a bite to eat and drinks, watch some football and play some competative Uno. The Pear Tree was ideal, the food was great and generous portions, the drinks reasonable and Daisy was well impressed with the homemade J20's (Passion Fruit Juice and Orange Juice!). The only small drawback was one member of staff who was very rude to a family that were sat near to us outside, and then also very rude to my Wife when ordering food, shrugging her shoulders and refusing to answer a query - hahaha! Nice place if the sun is shining you can sit outside. Inside lacks a bit of atmosphere - needs some art on the walls/more soft furnishings. Coffee ok but not very hot. Scones very poor. One of the best Wetherspoons outlets I have visited. Even although I have only visited a handful of times not being from Edinburgh but Glasgow.... We always visit when through for the day or going to the theatre. A pub soaked in history (as they all are) but the staff are tremendous and although service industry is tedious at best they all seem to enjoy it and make it worth their own while and for the customers too. Brilliantly placed within Leith walk and the shopping centre and more recently a tram stop next door. The food is always 10/10 and the drinks are great too.... With some of the best prices around. Such a shame this place closes it's doors for the last time on Sunday 3rd of November.... Gone but not forgotten, never forgotten! 👍

We booked this afternoon tea as a treat whilst away for a few days in Edinburgh but can honestly say it is the worst customer service we have received anywhere. To start, we were kept waiting for 20 minutes, after being seated, before anyone came to speak to us and the room was freezing cold. Food was reasonably nice but when asking for another pot of tea, which we had been advised was included in the extortionate price of the afternoon tea, they simply topped up the existing tea bag with hot water. When we asked for a new tea bag you would have thought we had asked for the world! Everything seemed to be too much trouble and made us feel as though we were making a fuss. There was a teaspoon of jam provided to accompany two scones and when we politely requested more jam we were told this was not possible as it had all been measured out according to the bookings for the day....unbelievable! A little more thought and consideration about the customer experience would have made all the difference but sadly we would not recommend this afternoon tea at all, you would do better in the regular cafe with a sandwich, piece of cake and cup of tea.
