My husband and I have returned home after our second stay at The Peak Hotel in Castleton. It’s been a couple of days since we checked out of this establishment albeit a day earlier than we had originally booked for. I needed to reflect on our latest experience before submitting a review. I normally leave this side of things to my husband but our stay started and ended so badly that I felt compelled to write my own personal account and overall conclusion. I can say with absolute honesty that I have never been made to feel so undervalued and treated in such an awful manner by any other establishment where I have booked to stay. Both staff and management at The Peak Hotel have left me feeling hurt, upset and angry at the appalling way they dealt with both myself and my husband after we had to continually complain about loud and intrusive music coming from the kitchen which sat directly below our bedroom- more notably directly below the head of the bed. We complained a total of five times to both staff and management and this was over less than a 48 hour period . We checked in on the Sunday afternoon and had no choice but to check out by lunchtime on the Tuesday. We weren’t actually due to leave until Wednesday morning. We still had much planned whilst in beautiful Castleton 🧡 I really don’t know what more we could have done or said to have gotten some respite from the awful and continual din that invaded our room, our personal space and our r&r on a daily basis. Even having to go downstairs to complain twice in my pyjamas. It was beyond unacceptable. And to be told time and time again that it would be dealt with and then it start up again, just makes you feel exhausted and eventually beaten into submission. You just have to admit defeat. We never once asked for the music to be turned off only to be turned down. We didn’t expect anyone to work in silence but the lack of consideration shown back to us was staggering. On the last day just before midday when we had once again returned to our room after making the fourth complaint to another staff member and being assured once again that it would be dealt with and the manager would come and see us, the music started up again. This time however it really felt like mockery towards us. At this point I burst into tears and we decided we could no longer stand to be there. It didn’t feel like a nice or welcoming place to be. It took on a darker tone. There had been an offer on that morning to potentially move us to another room but no guarantees. We didn’t ask or want that. We just wanted some peace and quiet and some respect be shown to us by staff members. It really wasn’t too much to ask and anyway , we were checking out the following morning. My husband tried one last time to speak to the manager (he didn’t come and see us either) who had initially been very apologetic towards our situation. Unfortunately he had turned very defensive and uninterested and stated that he ‘didn’t think the music was that bad’. However at my husband’s request, he was totally unwilling to come up to our room and listen to it for himself. It was that bad that we could hear and recognise actual songs and word for word lyrics. But still he maintained his stance. We asked for a room reduction or something off our bill as a gesture of goodwill and acknowledgment on his part but this wasn’t forthcoming either. We were offered another night free of charge at a later date. My husband explained that we had no desire to ever stop at The Peak Hotel again after the way we had been treated. The complimentary night would have been acceptable if it could have been knocked off our bill for the night we missed. This again was rebuffed. Therefore we were charged the bill in full on our departure. No apologies were given. The first stay we had here last October was absolutely faultless hence why we returned this year. There was also a lovely vegetarian option on the menu for Sunday dinner on our first stay. This time around there wasn’t and when I enquired if there was a vegetarian option to the waitress, I was bluntly told ‘no’ before she walked off. I did also ask the manager about this when I saw him on the Monday. He told me that their chef was ‘traditional when it came to Sunday roasts’. He did however add that he himself wanted to see a non-meat alternative added back onto the menu. As the manager, surely he could insist that the chef caters for all? Doesn’t make any sense. I ended up with a very below average burger and fries for my Sunday dinner. So in conclusion, I wouldn’t recommend staying here or even visiting whether it be for a drink or a meal. The place is currently run by people who only care about themselves and their clique. Tourism is quite obviously a necessity in the running of the business as I’m sure much needed revenue is generated from this. However…we were definitely made to feel like irrelevant non-natives rather than valued customers. I have worked within the specialist retail industry for almost thirty years. The thought that any customer of mine would go away feeling as upset and trampled on as we did on Tuesday by my actions and attitude towards them is unthinkable. I know you can’t please all of the people all of the time but you can certainly try your hardest and do the best you can to make everyone feel valued. No one should ever be made to feel so belittled. I always try and put myself in someone else’s shoes when they feel hurt and upset by the actions of others. I would strongly suggest that Graham and his ‘team’ also try this approach and hopefully it will evoke some kind of empathy and better understanding on how to treat customers and visitors with more respect and understanding going forward. The way you allowed things to end when we left was so unprofessional and how you made us feel was beyond unpleasant. Shame on you. Maybe ask their ‘traditional’ chef to bake a large humble pie so they can all have a good slice and reflect. Good luck 🤞🏻

In Oct 2023, my wife and myself and our dog stayed at the above hotel for 3 nights in room 3 at the front of the hotel. We had a fantastic stay, the room was great and everything was faultless. As a result we decided to book again this year and we stayed at The Peak Hotel in room 4 which is directly over the kitchen to the rear. This was allocated at the time of booking. We arrived on Sunday 17th November at 15:45 and checked in to the room. Within minutes of us being inside we could hear loud dance music coming from below us but at that stage we didn’t know the source. It was like being on top of a disco in full flight. We were going out in any case and left the room for a few hours and didn’t return until around 20:00. On entering the room we were again confronted with loud music coming from below as before. It was reverberating upwards and we could hear it above the TV in our room. We could also make out the songs being played and hear the lyrics word for word. As a result my wife went downstairs in her pyjamas to see exactly where the music was coming from and to ask the staff if it could be turned down. My wife spoke to a male member of staff who was the one that checked us in. My wife said to him that we were in room 4 and that she could hear music very loudly banging from directly under our room to which the member of staff looked surprised and confused. My wife informed him that it was Green Day playing and he replied that it would be coming from the kitchen staff and he would ask them to turn it down. No apology was given. My wife returned to the room and told me what was said and we waited for the music to be turned down. This didn’t happen as we could then hear The Jam playing. We could not relax in the room as this was directly under where the bed is situated. It wasn’t a good start to our stay but we wanted to try and enjoy it however the music continued at the same volume up until 21:30 when it was turned off. The following morning we decided that we would speak to the manager as we didn’t want a repeat of the previous night. By chance Graham, the manager, was speaking to some residents in room 3 next door to us so my wife managed to speak to him. She explained the issues with the noise to him as described. He was very apologetic and said it was different staff on that day and there was only one person working so there wouldn’t be a repeat of the loud music. My wife thanked him and we hoped that that would be the end of it and we could carry on enjoying our stay. Everything was fine during the afternoon when in our room, for a time. We then went out for our evening meal and returned to the room at about 19:30 as it started to snow quite heavily. It was quiet when we first entered. We had showers and got changed to settle down for the evening. We had just got into bed at about 20:00 when the music started up again with great gusto. We couldn’t relax so we both went downstairs to the bar area and spoke to John, the barman and explained the issue. Our displeasure was clear. We asked if the music could be turned down and he told us that it would be going off and he apologised profusely and offered us a drink on the house. We declined the drink but we’re grateful for his professional and proactive manner. The music was turned off that night. Following on from the previous 2 nights and several complaints to staff and management we decided that we again wanted to speak to the manager as we felt our concerns weren’t being taken seriously and it was leaving us feeling annoyed as we couldn’t relax in the room we’d paid for. Therefore this morning just before midday, we ventured downstairs again in the hope of speaking to Graham. He was not on the premises at that point but we spoke to a female member of staff who was cleaning. We explained the whole situation again and she was receptive to our complaint. She explained that room 4 sat right above the kitchen and that the speakers were in an elevated position and she had previously said to kitchen staff to place the speakers on the floor so that the noise was deadened somewhat by surrounding appliances. For this to be said it made us feel as though this wasn’t an isolated incident but had previously been complained about by other customers. She apologised and said that there was different staff on and it wouldn’t happen again and she would contact Graham and he would either ring us or come up to the room and see us. She did say there was a chance of a different room but there was no guarantee. We explained we didn’t want that as we were only there for one more night and were not happy and that we wanted some kind of reduction on our bill for the inconvenience and upset that this had caused. We once again returned to the room and awaited contact. Within 10 minutes of us being in the room again the music started from below us in the kitchen as before both music and lyrics clearly audible and this time it was Lewis Capaldi shortly followed by Blondie. At this point we were speechless as we had only just spoken to staff minutes before and felt like we were being laughed at and goaded. My wife burst into tears and said she couldn’t stay any longer as it was obvious that nothing would be done about the issue. We therefore took the decision to leave a day early rather than having to endure another night. We felt like we had no other option. We started to pack our things up during which time we thought that Graham would’ve made contact with us but he didn’t. Instead I collected a few bags and went downstairs to go to my car. He was behind the bar and I asked if I could have a word on my return. He said yes. I returned after a few minutes and spoke to him at the far end of the bar. I explained again what the issue was and that nothing had improved so the only option we had was to leave a day early as there was no guarantee that things would improve. Rather than the apologetic manager my wife has spoken to the day before I got a quite defensive person who was reluctant to come to any satisfactory conclusion. He stated that in his opinion the music wasn’t that bad. I explained it sounded like a disco at full pelt and that he should come up to the room to listen to it so that this situation wouldn’t happen to future customers. I also mentioned it would be a good idea to tell kitchen staff that if there were people in room 4 to have the music at a lower level as to not irritate and have a bit of consideration for paying guests. I also mentioned that I didn’t believe that we were the first to complain and he stated that we weren’t but not for a while. Obviously this is an Issue that has not been rectified and displays bad management and customer service. He did not want to go upstairs and at that point offered us a nights stay for free at another time. I stated that we wouldn’t be coming back as we felt we had been treated pretty badly. We would’ve rather have had the last nights stay knocked off the bill as recompense. Why couldn’t this have been done? There was no other reasonable offer given and no meaningful apology either. I was told that I shouldn’t expect the kitchen staff to work in silence which I agreed with however we never asked for the music to be turned off per se but only turned down. I really don’t see why this couldn’t have been done to stop unnecessary upset and unfairness. We had been looking forward to visiting Castleton and your premises for some time. We have now had to return home early feeling let down and deflated. We are contacting you in hope that something can be done and to make you aware that this potentially will cause problems for future customers. If you are contemplating staying here, do not book room 4 but my advise is that there are plenty of other establishments in the town only happy to welcome you and treat you as a valued customer and not a nuisance.

Unfortunately this establishment is far too lazy and obviously inexperienced at creating tasty and enjoyable meals for vegetarians or vegans. It’s quite clearly far too much hassle and also too taxing on the brain of the chef to come up with some meat and fish free menu alternatives. Very poor show especially as there has never been a time where plant based meals have been so popular and readily available at cafes, pubs and restaurants. Even the local tearooms in Castleton (Tilly’s & Dolly’s) both cater very well for us non-animal eaters. Maybe the chef at The Peak Hotel could go and get some lessons from them? Goodness knows they need it! Lazy, ignorant and very closed minded. Suggest the management either tell him or her to either expand their culinary expertise or find another chef who is better equipped. Safe to say, I won’t be returning to this below average establishment.

Really disappointed with the food here. One of us had a pie which was burnt and so dried up the filling was stuck to the dish! I had a burger which was quite dry also. My husband had the fish which was extremely small and left him hungry. To be fair to the staff (who were very pleasant they took the pie off the bill) If I had been the chef I would have been highly embarrassed to send the pie out to a customer. There are so many pubs in Castleton sadly this is one we won't be revisiting.

Real quality pub - traditional ales, plus all the usual lagers etc. Paddy was really helpful showing me and my wife the different wines and whiskys, plus offering tasting for the ones we were interested in. People like Paddy are the reason we seek out pubs like the Peak Hotel. Did I mention the food is great too?

Welcomed by a complimentary, reserved parking space directly opposite the hotel and exceptional staff who looked after us from the first minute! Home made food was delicious, service was great and a pleasant, quiet seating area at the rear of the hotel/pub. All reasonably priced. The room was spotless, well presented and fitting with the history of the location. Quiet and very comfortable for a good night's sleep. Completely furry friend friendly and an excellent place to stay for an array of local attractions, walls and traditional browsing shops. We really enjoyed our stay and look forward to visiting again.

I booked to stay here for 3 nights. When I arrived I was expected to pay up front for all 3 nights. I obliged but wasn’t very happy. After being shown to my room I was then told that there would be live music playing that night. I certainly wasn’t happy about that, but was told that it shouldn’t be too bad at my end of the hotel. This was certainly not the case and the music continued till nearly midnight. Even after it was over I was kept awake by loud conversation downstairs, and shouting from the street immediately outside my window. I decided there upon to leave the following morning in spite of the fact that I had paid for the room, as I did not want my holiday spoilt. As instructed I rang the manager later that day, and despite my best efforts to get my point across calmly and civilly the conversation needed in a slanging match. I was told that they were a “busy community pub” and I should have researched it! No one mentioned this ghastly racket would take place when I booked and nothing was mentioned on their website. I would like to know how I was supposed to research it! No quarter was given and not a penny refunded. I am NOT a mind reader. In conclusion I would recommend anyone looking for accommodation in the area to look elsewhere. Clearly I will never return. Fortunately I found accommodation elsewhere which was a huge improvement in all respects. I work in a cafe and would not dream of treating a customer in this way. That’s all I’ve got. Nb also the room was pretty basic and in need of refurbishing.

I came to the Peak Hotel as a second choice I have to admit, after such terrible customer service at Ye Old Cheshire Cheese down the road when I dared to come in before 12 o clock on Sunday. I'm so glad I did, as a vegan, I'd looked at all the menus outside the pubs and it really was a very close call between these two so it seems fate played a part in this. I walked in and was greeted by a friendly young lady behind the bar with a smile (very different to what I got down the road). She brought me the menu to my table and I went up to the bar to order a drink. I already knew what i wanted so ordered food and paid. My meal came around 10 minutes later which I was very impressed with.... and it was amazing (and massive). I was made to feel at home by a couple of the staff which when you're dining alone can make a big difference. I've been to the Peak a few times when I've been to Castleton and it's been a good experience every time. Dog friendly, people friendly and a great atmosphere. We will definitely be back again soon. Thank you so much.

I have visited this pub twice now, twice in December and once in January. The pub itself is lovely, such a friendly atmosphere and the decor is lovely with log burning fires. When i visited the week between christmas and new year me and my mum went in on a cold day and had two glasses of mulled wine, which clearly wasn't mulled wine but just to glasses of burnt red wine, the worst i've ever tasted. Never the less, like I said before I love the atmosphere of the pub and the service is good so me and a friend returned to have a meal in January, if anything the menu does lack a bit of choice, me and my friend both ordered 'steak burgers', now i'm a Farmer and to me steak is steak, (even if it's just sizzle steaks!), and what was served was just two normal beef burgers, the beef burgers was nice and tasty but if i'd have known it was just a normal burger I wouldn't have ordered it. The drinks range is good, wide and varied!Another thing I found a little uncomfortable was we visited to eat on a quiet Saturday night, and when asked wether we could put the drinks/ food on a tab when we ordered we was told we could but only if we leave a card behind the bar. Now I understand this as the pub must have a lot of walkers and passers by which must give them the slip, but it was just a bit bizzare when it was a quiet Saturday night and there was a lot of staff working.

Despite a busy Sunday the team were very friendly and great service. Food was lovely although the soup of the day didn’t get the stamp of approval (too much lemon?). Ambience very relaxed. Highly recommended.

Super friendly pub, awesome staff and a really wonderful atmosphere. The inside of the pub is both cosy and spacious, and outside area looked super cute with the fairy lights too. What really made this place memorable though was the staff - helpful, chatty, full of charm and personality, and particularly skilled in moth catching! Everyone was incredible with our dogs too, depsite one being a little unsettled and yappy at times.

First of all I want to say how disinclined I am to write anything negative, having read the manager’s responses to any previous negative reviews, and if I had noticed them before my visit I would probably have chosen an alternative restaurant. I think it looks much better when managers/owners acknowledge negative comments and apologise or explain in a friendly manner, but sarcasm seems to be preferred here.

Signs outside say food served all day. We parked just over the road where it stated that you would get the £3 fee refunded when you ate at Peak Hotel. When we went to the hotel the door was shut and paper stuck on it saying it was closed until Wednesday.

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our one night stay in the Peak Hotel. It was a last minute request and they offered us a room which was amazing. Rustic vintage style, clean and tidy and amazing view. The price was bit expensive given that breakfast was not included, to be honest. Nevermind, we would recommend this hotel.

Visited here on the first evening of our stay in the area - party of three plus dog. Friendly accommodating staff. Extensive menu. Between us we tried scampi, a ‘Devil’s Arse’ burger, and sea bass. All great except that the Mediterranean veg with the sea bass were too spicy for my husband. That said we enjoyed our food enough to book for Sunday lunch, when our daughter and partner were to join us. We arrived on the Sunday to a lovely sign on our reserved table ‘party of 5 plus doggo’. Sunday lunch was also very good and value for money.

Went here on a walk day after hiking with two friends in the peaks, the building is gorgeous and the staff are friendly but it's uncomfortably hot inside and the outdoor area is quite small and seems to feature only family benches and has no standing room at all - meaning only a few people can take up all the spaces - so we, and various other couples and small groups, had to hover in a cramped smoking area just to be outside.

Stopped off here after a long and breezy walk around the peaks of Castleton. We have been before with the dog but sat in the beer garden which is small but perfectly serviceable. Knowing they were dog friendly we went in and sat inside. Staff were so welcoming and friendly and are genuinely dog friendly so we decided to eat there. Food was amazing, best burger I have had for a long while, worth paying the bit extra for. A lovely warm and cosy country pub

Visited Sunday afternoon with my partner, his parents and his aunt and uncle from Hong kong. Ordered 3 roasts and because 3 were not so hungry, ordered garlic bread, creamy mushrooms and a sausage panini for the others to share, asian style. A couple of beers and a big jug of water for the table was also obtained. Lovely atmosphere in the place and the staff were excellent and friendly. All the food was brought together and some extra side plates as the food was being shared. The portion sizes were excellent, in fact we may have ordered slightly too much for those not really hungry. Really nice food - no complaints at all. Also worth noting is they refund your parking fee for the public car park across the other side of the street if you spend over £10. For six people, we spend just over £60, which we thought very reasonable.

Arrived here this evening after reading reviews, chose the peak hotel over the other pubs in the area as saw it was child friendly!! Was busy when we arrived and lots of tables reserved but staff found us a table for 4 and we ordered drinks while we choose food. Good choice of kids meals, £5.95 for sausage and mash, chicken nuggets and chips etc, lots of burgers, hot dogs, pies, nachos etc on the menu. My husband went for the Devils Arse burger and I chose the chicken and leek pie (the specials pie were chicken and leek or chicken and black pudding). The meals arrived and when I cut into my pie I discovered I had chicken and black pudding by mistake. Now any other pie I could eat but I can’t stomach black pudding. Politely took it back to the bar and explained and was immediately offered a replacement. Whilst we waited (took a good 30 mins but don’t mind this at all as it proves how fresh the food is, and my kids take an age to eat so not a problem at all!!) I was brought a refund for my meal. To me that was totally above and beyond what the pub needed to do but massively appreciated. When my pie arrived it was so worth the wait. It was delicious and my husband had to help me finish it! We would definitely return should we come back to Castleton again! Thank you

The bedroom we stayed in was really nice, four poster bed and modern bathroom. Really clean and traditional looking. The staff were really nice here and there's a big carpark across the road. The pub is quite quirky and they allow dogs and supply treats! The only slight disappointment was the breakfast. It took 45 mins to arrive (which they apologised for) and wasn't very good. Overcooked egg, undercooked pancake. The full English wasn't as described either. However it was a good overall stay.

There are many good things to say about the place - the ambience , the quirky individual styling , great beer and food etc - but what really stands out is the outstanding service by each and every staff member . Castleton was heaving, but the friendly staff found us a table - with a warming there would be a wit. There was… but the food was fresh and homemade when it eventually arrived. I had the vegetarian lasagne which they kindly made with normal cheese instead of the advertised goats chees (proving the fresh status). Yes it was busy, but the staff were all very young and managed admirably.

We were stopping the 1 night here, so decided to eat at the pub that evening. We were looked after by Scott and another bar man that evening, and both provided excellent service. The menu was decent, not a great variety, as we come from the lake district, and menus are massive there. But wereboth plumbbed for a starte and main course. Only to find out they had run out of Turkey for the christmas dinner.....So the wife decided on the lamb, which was cooked excellent. Ihas a steak burger, again excellent, with a massive plate of fries...Great selection of beers, spirits and wine.. great staff and service throughout the evening, and friendly locals there also. We managed to get a booking for a large group on a Saturday night and, although this wasn't our first choice destination, we were all very satisfied. Been to the Old Hall at Hope numerous times and the food is always gorgeous. Visited here thinking it would be as good. Had starters of halloumi fries and Henderson's garlic bread, both were lovely. The main courses were disgusting, blade of beef looked like and tasted like a cheap tin of stewing steak, my husband had the hot dog with pulled pork and chorizo - for £12 you expect a proper sausage not a cheap tinned hot dog with cold dry pulled pork mush and cold fries and a cheap dry bread roll. The biggest insult was when I complained about mine, the woman tried telling me that that was how it was and I probably expected something else. I'm sorry, but I've had it in other restaurants and it was nothing like. I'm expecting a clever response from the owner, he very clearly doesn't like any sort of criticism!

Castleton is a pretty village with many places to eat. However we parked in the Peak Hotel car park and had lunch in the hotel. Baguettes for lunch was perfect. We have been regular visitors to Hargreaves prior to Covid, it's our favourite eatery in Buxton and always look forward to our visit. We visited yesterday and what a disappointment. What was once an " Edwardian " tea room , now looks more like a works canteen. My favourite colour is green, but the plain painted walls in a drab olive colour just doesn't work especially with no prints to break it up. Tableclothes seem to have disappeared and the lighting looks awful. Oh and they have fallen into the trap of PC "Unisex" loos. Having said all that, the food was very good and the staff/service efficient and friendly. Sorry, these, I know, are difficult times and it is all a matter of personal taste, just not to ours. I wish them well but we will now have to seek out pasture new.
