The attempt and excellent service is evident, politeness, attention, friendlies, yes that was fine. I can only glean that on the day the chef and bartender, were struggling with a new computer system and aftermath of an inept temporary chef leaving the stocks low. The soup: the soup was delicious. We had to assume there was only a scraping left to serve as the portion, served in A finger bowl wouldn't have filled a mug. My Wife had to get pasty from Gregg's after just to feel like she'd actually had lunch. My All day breakfast, even with vegan sausages as there were no proper ones left, was delicious, the scrambled eggs were perfect but served without bacon. Just forgotten about completely. We weren't asked how our meal was, Probably embarrassment. My pint of cherry porter was gorgeous and my wife's cordial and soda was mixed properly a rarity in this day and age so a mixed bag of emotion. So why didn't we announce our qualms? Only one member of staff on, she was busy with other punters. And we needed to move on. So only 4 stars today.

We came here for two meals during our stay in Buxton. The pub was lovely and spacious and had a relaxing atmosphere. Service was quick and friendly and staff were happy to accommodate us and our daughter. I was particularly impressed by the multiple vegan options on the menu. On the first night, I had the vegan meatball tagliatelle and vegan kebabs, which were both incredible! The vegan burger I had the night after did not disappoint, either. My partner had chicken schnitzel and a beef and bacon burger and said the schnitzel in particular was amazing. I would definitely recommend this place!

We went for a Sunday roast after reading reviews of good food. However we arrived and were seated on a tiny table in the fishbowl. They told us that there was no beef as they had run out but everything they had plenty of. We ordered food and sat back down, when we went to get our third drink after waiting for 45 minutes, we asked how much longer the food was going to be. They then told us that the food was 1 hour 20 minutes wait. The couple next to us had been waiting 55 minutes as well and the bar staff apologises to them and offered them a free drink, but they didn’t even check on us. Their food then turned up after hour and half and their gravy hadn’t even been mixed, visible gravy granules floating in the gravy, they said their parsnips and carrots were raw. Our food then turned up, they got the wrong meat and had to send it back for the correct meat. Our parsnips were also raw, we didn’t even get any carrots and barely any veg, the stuffing wasn’t cooked, it wasn’t a roast chicken obviously a frozen chicken breast that had been blasted in the microwave. They then had the audacity to ask how our meal was, after the couple next to us complained to them about their dire meal already, we complained about the same items plus we only got one parsnip and they got two and we got NO carrots! They then told us after the meal that they were running low on veg (good time to tell someone don’t you think?). They offered the other couple another free drink and not us and the lovely couple next to us with their lovely dog Holly gave us the free drinks which was a nice gesture. Considering the price you would’ve expected homemade gravy, the fact that we paid the same price for the 3 meat roast and to not receive or be offered extra meat as a replacement!! When you go out food you expect it to be better than cooking at home and a treat, and you certainly expect your food to be at the very least COOKED!! No one came to apologise or offer anything to say sorry. We felt sorry for the waitress as she was trying her hardest and obviously not her fault, she also said that other tables had complained and that they were taking some items off the menu. No one from management came out at all. We’re not angry we were just very very disappointed in this establishment. We normally share our food experiences on instagram but in this instance I’m going save instagram the embarrassment.

Great pub. We walked in for dinner as a party of 7 on a Friday night - 4 adults, 3 kids under 3. Had a nice big table at the one end and 3 high chairs (which were clean!). Lovely friendly barman. Had a taste of two ales before ordering one. All had meals, all enjoyed. The steak and ale pie was incredible. Sauce was some kind of beery treacley gravy and it was delicious. Pastry was great. Accompaniments great. Nothing greasy or rushed. Gravy was unreal. Will call in again when we're next in the area.

Everyone who came up to the bar had a taste of the droughts on offer so they could get the ale they wanted . Everyone was happy. We had the chicken burger which was nice . Really mixed selection of people in the pub: families , couples , dog parents . Would return despite the slightly limited menu as they have daily specials too.

I don't often write reviews, however I want to write a positive review for The Cheshire Cheese, Buxton. Myself, my husband and son (plus dog) were looking for somewhere to eat while holidaying in Buxton. We looked at menus and read reviews to choose. We saw there had been a couple of lower reviews for this pub/restaurant recently, so almost changed our minds, but we're so glad we didn't. The welcome was very warm and our meals were delicious (burger, lasagne and steak (rare, cooked perfectly). Great value, lovely feel. Please support local establishments when visiting the area, we're pleased we did.

A disappointing trip. Staff were friendly but I could not believe the prices and quality of the food. We ordered two Sunday lunches and they were £15 each. As we were there with three small children and needed to eat we went ahead presuming we’d get something amazing for the price. So disappointed. Food was just about warm and although it wasn’t terrible and tasted ok, I still couldn’t believe what we got. Two carrots and parsnips, a bit of mixed greens, mash, a couple of roast potatoes, smallish Yorkshire puddings, a good chunk of beef (which was good quality to be fair) and a hard price of stuffing. The gravy was like water. The kids meals were fairly decent. The drink prices too were ridiculous. £10 for a double gin and tonic. The only reason we stayed and paid the price was so our young children could eat. I would never return and wouldn’t recommend. The vibe was funny in there too, not unfriendly but not great. We ate and left. Definitely wouldn’t return.

Awful rude staff, arrived after a long day travelling, bar lady rude and abrasive, man asking for stuff all of which they did not have, then in the middle of his order she left and said she had to take food out. Then when it came to us she had nothing we asked for, eventually asked if had pressco she said yes if one was open. I watched her measure it in a wine cup, surly pressco brought by the glass which she half filled. The final straw was it was flat. The lady behind the bar defo needs so training in customer service the rudeness I have never experienced and will not be returning.

Went for a Sunday dinner after a long day travelling. The starter took forever to come out and when it did it was foul, then came an even longer wait. The kitchen hadn’t been informed that we had finished our starters so hadn’t started our main. When it turned up, it was left overs that had been thrown in a pan to reheat. The beef was rare but when you turn it over it was solid, the chicken was inedible and the veg was a combo of anaemic but also burnt. We ate what we could dare to and left immediately.

This delightful pub has mastered the art of making everyone feel welcome - two-legged friends like myself included, but also our furry companions. The atmosphere is cozy and convivial, with rustic wooden tables that seem to whisper "come hither" as you settle in. But let's get to the good stuff: the beer! Oh, glorious brews! The Cheshire Cheese Pub boasts an impressive selection of craft beers from local and national breweries. I indulged in a few (okay, maybe more than a few) pints of their signature ale, which was as smooth as silk and left me wanting more. And then, there's the food - heavenly creations that will satisfy even the most discerning palate! From hearty pub classics to innovative twists on traditional dishes, every bite is a delight. The staff at the Cheshire Cheese Pub are as warm as the atmosphere they've created. Attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about their products, they'll guide you through the beer menu or offer recommendations on the daily specials with a smile that's almost as bright as the pub's sunny disposition. In short, this Buxton gem is a must-visit for anyone seeking a truly enjoyable experience with friends - human or furry!

An absolute mess of an evening. When entering the building it was okay, the setting was quite conformable and it was very accessible. However we were taken too our table booked for 4 people and there were only 3 seats 😂. Furthermore we later went to order our food (i wanted a rump steak) unfortunately they had none left, so i chose fish and chips instead which they had ran out of, then i asked for lasagne and yet again there was no lasagne. Finally i settled on a all-day breakfast but even then there were no sausages 😭. Our food arrived around 45 mins later which is a long time since the restaurant was practically empty. However the food was nice apart from some cold toast but overall it was good. I really do hope that was just a one off and usually they have more food.

Its ok for a drink, except that the pub feels dirty, we've been here a few times and each time the tables are sticky and you can smell the toilets from the seats outside, its also always dead, even at peak times and its very evident as its a big pub. We had sunday dinner here once and it was awful. We should of known when there was nobody in there and nobody else eating. The beef was extremely tough, to the point of inedible. I couldn't even cut it up so left it all. The potatoes were raw and cold and gravy watery. I'd never eat here again unless it had major upgrades. Traditional pub with a great atmosphere and good food options. The Sunday evening quiz is also a lot of fun.

Went for lunch on a weekday, very quiet, friendly staff and dog friendly. The fish and chips however were quite dire. Very small and shrivelled piece of fish with small portion of chips and peas, and for £15.95 would have expected much better. Good beer but that would not tempt us back.

We booked last minute when our original plan fell through. Online booking worked really well and the text confirmation was great. We had 2 starters and 4 main meals, all were very tasty and cooked to order with large portions. The sticky rice was very sticky and the sauces in all the curry dishes were spicy but not overly hot - just as we requested when we ordered. The restaurant wasn't busy but a large family group was just leaving when we arrived. Super setting, it felt like we were guests at a private house which was really nice. Would definitely go back if we are in the area again.

Called here for Sunday lunch and was very disappointed. For a start the food was served on cold plates All the vegetables were burnt. I pointed this out to the staff but got no apology. Needless to say I will not be having food here again. I suggest you get a proper cook.

Just popped in for a bite of lunch. The two bar staff were very welcoming. Nice selection of beers/ales on tap, and a good selection of alcohol-free bottled beers. Good selection of dishes on the menu. My wife and I each ordered one of the sausage and mash dishes. Got a choice of types of sausages, types of mashed spuds, and type of gravy. Food was delivered quite quickly and was absolutely delicious. Was a great pub to find and I would not hesitate to visit again next time we are back in the area.
