The Pea Bung has changed in decor but not the food. I used to come every Saturday for lunch with friends (55 years ago!) my fish cake tasted exactly the same as I remember. The staff on Friday went above and beyond for us after I had a medical episode. I cannot fault all the care and attention that you gave me and the total support for my husband and sister. Thankyou doesn’t come close or feel enough for you all. We will return next time we are in Grimsby, you are an institution of Freeman Street Market. I cannot recommend you enough.

Haven't been to the Pea Bung in ages, last time I went, I walked round eating the most amazing chips with scraps, curry sauce & naturally, salt & vinegar. Fast forward to Saturday 2nd September... Myself & a friend decided to treat ourselves, I say treat, as naturally, based on the times I went quite a while back, I thought it would be a treat. Ordered the same as last time, small chips on a tray with scraps & curry sauce. £2.35 for small chips & £1.30 for the curry. £3.65 for a tray of bland floppy chips, scraps were ok, portion size, even though it says small, took the p**s, not worth £2.35 at all. Curry wasn't all that tastes wise & definitely not the £1.30 i wasted on it. Woman serving both myself & my friend, looked like she was storing the lemons in her mouth & been slapped by the fish!! What's the point of spending all the money on smart uniforms for staff, when customer service was seriously lacking. No smile, no please, no thankyou. We both left & I'm pretty sure, we'll be giving it a miss. Such a shame, was so good yesteryear.

Such high hopes but alas bitterly disappointed, we tried the pea bung as a takeaway meal.and I was bitterly disappointed. I ordered a large haddock chips and peas and if this was a large fish then a small must have been a sprat. The chips were cold and all in all the experience was not a good one, even the usual service wasn't as it should be I guess the server was having an off day. It was the first time I've visited since it's refurbishment and I'm afraid I won't be rushing back in the near future.

Went in with my family today (some of which was down from Sheffield), no better place to have fish and chips at a good quality price, the customer service was so good, always feel really homely in there and reminds of going there as a child. The waitress even gave my niece a bowl of “scraps” which she listened to us telling her about which was lovely (one happy little ☺️) ….. The place looks great also

This is the second time we have had lunch here . Both times the food was excellent- the fish is the best we’ve had- so fresh. Chips are good too. Very welcoming and friendly staff. The 2 hours of free parking is a bonus too, as are the local businesses in the market. As we’ve enjoyed it so much, our New Years resolution is to visit once a month.

My memories of the Pea Bung go back to the mid 70s when I used to go at least once a week. Back in the area for a week we decided to do our own personal research into well known fish & chip restaurants. The scales are not happy but we had a great time - nothing beats fresh Grimsby fish! Freeman Street has changed somewhat (and not for the better) but essentially the Pea Bung is just the same, albeit the decor has been updated. Of the three establishments visited during our week, I am awarding the Pea Bung first prize. We visited on a Tuesday lunchtime and were able to go straight in to a freshly cleaned table. The waitress was very friendly and obviously knew a lot of the ‘regulars’. We both chose the specials menu consisting of fish, chips, mushy peas, bread & butter, pot of tea and sponge pudding & custard ... all for the amazing price of £6.75. This also wins my prize for value for money! The actual meal did not disappoint, tasting just as good as I remember from all those years ago, a great nostalgic trip! The area may not be the best but don’t let that put you off, you’re here to sample some of the finest fish & chips. Don’t take my word for it, go see for yourself. There’s also free 2 hour parking just across the road so what’s not to love. Enjoy If you found this review helpful, please show your appreciation by voting 👍🏻

Following a discussion about Grimsby with our friend, We decided to take a trip down memory lane. Firstly, we visited the docks…that was sad to see. Then we visited the Pea Bung. Where do I start?! It was so busy, we queued for a seat and take away was a never ending stream. We watched the waitress take the orders, dish up the fish snd chips, sweep round the fish fryer, (always conscious of Covid-sterilising as she went), clear and clean table, take payments. She had such a wonderful cheery manner with all the customers. We all commented how wonderful she was and would definitely be an asset to any business (we later found out she was the daughter of the owner). She was a shining example of truly great service and work ethic. We were blown away by the meal deal, we couldn’t believe the price! Of course the haddock, chips and peas were the best!!! We did comment that perhaps they should raise their prices to reflect the standard of the meal. We’ll done! We will certainly recommend and return.

I’m new to Grimsby so I googled good chippies near me and The Pea Bung came up trumps. Glad we went there... spam fritter and mushy peas for me and my chap had haddock, chips and curry sauce (the portion of chips was big enough to share). We had a mooch around the indoor market (also great) while our food was being cooked and the lovely lady who served us gave us a shout when our lunch was ready. Will definitely return! There’s two hours free parking in the car park opposite too.

45 years I have been going to the Pea Bung and in all that time I have never once encountered bad service nor bad food. As a child growing up in Grimsby we never had a lot of money but Saturday lunch at the Pea Bung was the highlight of the week. As a child, I always wanted to go and sit-in at the restaurant but that was too posh for us. At the age of 45, I finally got to go and sit in the restaurant and have fish and chips on a plate with a can of coke and it did not disappoint. I don’t know if it was my taste buds were at fault or not but I walked out after the meal without the normal smile on my face. It appeared to me that my fish had been left in the frier too long, the fish is normally golden brown but the batter this time was much darker, consequently the fish was dry at the edges. The soft drinks we had were ice cold and served in a chilled glass. This will not put me off returning as I think it was a one off.

Nice and hot, lovely fish, loads of mushy peas and scraps as well. Great service too. Love this place. My sisters and I called in for a chippy takeaway, my sister asked if there was enough chips for all our orders and was told yes there was. The girl serving put a carrier bag with food in on the counter, there you go ladies she said. My sister said these two haven’t ordered yet, oh sorry there isn’t enough chips left. My sister said I asked you and you said there was enough, the girl walked away so I said are you going to put this order somewhere to keep it warm then, the girl came back and put my sisters order on top of the plates to keep it warm. When we eventually got served 10 minutes later and after she had stopped rubbing her nose and pushing her glasses up, didn’t wash her hands we got our food and left. My sister said I was in here last week and the same girl was eating chocolate cake in between serving, licking her fingers and not washing her hands. Needless to say we won’t be coming to you for any more chips, if she does that in front of you what does she do what you don’t see. Has she got a hygiene certificate, has she got a hair net or hat because she certainly didn’t have her hair covered up, it was all straggly hanging down her face. My sisters chips were cold by the way, they had to be microwaved.

My wife and son, who is a wheelchair user, needed a place to eat last Monday lunchtime and I thought the Pea Bung would be suitable for them. I checked on the website and on trip advisor to make sure it would be open as my son is a disabled wheelchair user and so we plan outings in advance. So last Monday they parked outside the Pea Bung which had its lights on and doors open. My wife checked the time and a sign over the door reassured her that it was open as did the timetable on the door itself. Therefore, she got the wheelchair out of the car and my son transferred into it. When they got to the door a member of staff rudely said that they were not open on Monday and hadn't been for a long time. She seemed to think that they were unreasonable. Perhaps they should change their advertising.

Yesterday I visited and was not pleased at all.Firstly, the 3 women serving were rude and arrogant. Well, I could tell one blonde woman may have been in training due to the different uniform from the other women. However, the 2 regular staff I see was as usual very rude. When waiting on chips (which I was for a good 7-8 minutes just for 3 fish and chips) the women faced there back to the customers and stared sniggering then looked at the customers again then turned away and said some more that they clearly didn't want any of us to hear. Now I could tell it made some people paranoid; including myself and it wasn't good customer service at all. They then began to make remarks about how people 'was getting angry waiting for food' and 'good food takes time' which I completely understand and yeah the wait may have been long but it's always worth it. I think the thing that annoyed the customers most was the fact that the women were saying things about people when in fact they could've been cleaning up as the work tops were not clean at all, the outside of the peabung in the market was a state, food everywhere, dried up salt all over the table and the counter. I could see the floor where the women was stood and that had food all over, which I mean I know they're busy during service but when waiting 8 minutes on chips it gives them plenty of time to clean up inside and outside. I mean there is 3 of them and they're was one woman running a whole restaurant by herself, other than when she got another girl from the back to help her with the food. Overall, the peabung food and most of the staff are excellent. However, when I visited the staff were very rude, scruffy and not bothered about the fact there were customers in front of them at all when talking about some very rude things which including swearing when there were children around. I love coming to the peabung and we love the food just some staff in particular need changing or have a good speaking to, that's for sure. I know the peabung is a hard working business and that's what has made it so successful and I would hate to see it get more bad reviews due to VERY rude staff.

A real blast from the past, I can remember the original Peabung in the 60s and 70s when I was a child (and Cox's over the road - now sadly closed). The fish and chips are excellent quality, the chips are some of the crispiest and tastiest that I've ever had in a fish restaurant. Last few times without fail, had to queue as chips not ready. Other shops I have been to seem to be able to manage this, maybe just demand outstrips small fryer?2. Also annoying...two entrances. One from street, other from inside market. You can be stood in a q of 4 people inside when a person walks in from street side and gets served! Always consistent nice batter good chips. Great gravy they also offer a liver gravy but not for me. Do pensioner specials which are very reasonable and fish is lovely comes with tea bread and butter. The staff are fabulous family run from fryers to waitress to kitchen staff. The only reason that I've given 4 stars is because the peas are not traditional home made mushies but bought in otherwise first class

Having arrived later than usual we had to wait, no problem as it made the anticipation of what was to come more intense. Finally seated, we were treated once more to succulent pieces of Haddock and crisp Chips. It never ceases to amaze me how consistently good the meal is. Look forward to my next visit to the smiling staff and food.

A unique fish and chip (and some other delights) shop by the side of the covered market in Grimsby. This place is run by a lovely family, has serving facilities direct to the covered market, serves takeaway to the street and has a small, spotlessly clean restaurant on the side. The young lady who usually serves in the restaurant, daughter of the owners, is an absolute delight. The quality food is so cheap it's silly! We cannot recommend this place higher. A pleasure to visit.

As visitors to the freeman street market we were so pleased to find the little hidden gem The Pea Bung! We called in last week and had the most beautiful fish chips and mushy peas. All week my husband has been nagging me to go again and we visited today. Same as last week our meal was just lovely. The waitress is really friendly and very efficient if I had a restaurant I would want her working for me she's great! I'm having second thoughts now about writing this review as I'm worried all you readers will head down to the pea Bung and come my next visit I won't get a table

Greeted as though we are there every day when in fact it is only 3 or 4 times a year. The fish as always was piping hot, large and succulent served by a smiling waitress who seems to remember our order each time. I look forward to our next visit. Keep up the good work.

No visit to Grimsby is compleat without having a fish and chip meal in the pea bung excellent food served by lovely staff, I no longer live in Grimsby but always visit Freeman Street market, when I'm home! sadly the whole area is so run down which is such a shame it puts people off, but the market is the hub with it's new face lift, friendly stall holders trying to make a living;. hopefully with the planned regeneration Freeman Street will one again the thriving area it once was, and the Pea Bung will stay forever famous.go on give it a try

Just dropped in for lunch after not been in for a while. The restaurant was clean and light. We opted for the Pensioners Special at £5.50 per person. This comprised of fish, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter, a cup of tea followed by ice cream. The meal came, the chips were nice. The fish good in a nice crispy batter and the peas were served in a side dish. They didn't skimp on the portion size either. The staff were polite and attentive. I was glad we got there early as the place soon filled up. Lunch at the pea Bung was a very pleasant experience..

This place is regarded by many locals as being one of the best fish and chips in Grimsby and sadly, I cannot agree. I went a while ago and made one fatal mistake - I decided to have peas with my fish and chips... I forgot one major detail which is NOT displayed - they pour SUGAR in their peas. It totally ruined my fish and chips as it was soiled by what was like near liquid bright green icing sugar dumped all over the top. It rendered my meal totally inedible. I wouldn't mind if there was a notice alerting you to the fact they sugar their peas. It would come as a huge shock to some tourists I'm sure, not that Grimsby ever gets many of those these days. There's probably as much sugar in one helping of peas as there are in a bar of chocolate.Never ever again.

In the area once more, we headed for our normal spot for lunch. We were seated quickly and were served equally as fast. Considering we use this restaurant so infrequently, we were amazed the the lovely waitress remembered our order and also no lemon piece on the fish, this brought a smile to our faces that it was not "once seen, always forgotten" the meal as always was first class, served by a smiling and helpful young lady. If in the area, I urge readers to visit and enjoy their fare.

I am currently working abroad but every time I am home I have to visit the Pea Bung. The fish and chips are excellent but the home made pie with liver and onion gravy is gorgeous. Either eat in the restaurant or on one of the tables in the market.

Lovely local fish and chip shop. Been around for years. I used to come here as a chip 25 years ago and the atmosphere is still the same, friendly and always guaranteed to have a good old chat with some one. Nice chips. Try it out and you will understand what I mean.

This is an excellent restaurant on Freeman Street next door to the market. Yes it is a little way out but you can always catch the number 3 or 9 bus get off at the market and the buses are quite frequent. The staff are very nice and friendly and the fish and chips are well worth making the extra effort for. The restaurant is spotless and clean.

A Grimsby institution - the Pea Bung has lasted so long because it is quite simply the best !A lot of fish & chip shops and restaurants claim this - but I do not see how the Pea Bung can be bettered !Spotlessly clean, lovely staff, and fantastic fish and chips !We went in for lunch on Saturday, and a notice proclaimed they were now using new potatoes .... The chips were the Best we've had in a long, long time !Well done to everyone at the Pea Bung - long may you reign supreme !

Visited today for the first time in at least 10yrs. After reading the reviews thought we would give it a go ! Well how wrong can reviews be ... Chips we're discusting, all small sharp bit and covered in black bits from dirty fat. The fish was soggy, the batter a mush and the pot of peas that the young lass shoved and squashed at the bottom of the bag had burst all over .... If it hadn't of been peak time I'd of returned them as they we're put straight in the bin.. Having eaten fish all my life I can honestly say this comes in the top 2 worst chip shops yet.

Easily one of the best chippies in the area. Big portions, good prices and the Sausage & Stuffing pie is one of the best pies you can get from a chippy. Well worth a visit.

Our family have been using thus business for years. However, last weekend we had a huge order for 20 people. We decided to ring the order through a few days before just in case they needed notice for such a large order. The gentleman who took the order was most unhelpful, telling us that we would have to wait our turn when we came to collect. Fair enough, we weren't looking for special treatment. Put his rudeness down to him maybe having a bad day. The tone of his voice was aggressive, rather than what he said. Anyway, Saturday approached and we went to collect our order. Sure enough we were kept waiting, despite having said we'd be there at 4.30pm. We were greeted with angry face and once the large order had been completed, the gentleman said "amen" in a very rude way. Consequently, they have now lost our custom and we will never buy from this business again.
