The Paul Jones Hotel in Dumfries & Galloway

Came across this place randomly. Did not disappoint. Decided to go to southerness after a day at Caerlaverock castle. Had been to the lighthouse over 20 years ago and wanted a trip down memory lane. Stumbled on this place. Sat outside to have a drink in the warm sun. Had look at menu and ordered Cajun chicken macaroni. Massive portion and delicious. Place was busy which is surprising as it feels like middle of nowhere. If you are down this way then the Paul jones bar and grill is a must. Cater for dogs too.

Well what can I say the food we had was absolutely amazing big portions and very tasty the kids meals were brilliant too nit too big and not too small staff are very friendly what a lovely place.

Turned away didnt allow children in the bar side even though lots of seating available and the area had for children was full

Called in as holidaying here. Had 2 x high chairs and another 2 kids. Pub was very accommodating with friendly staff. Was a horrible night raining etc and the food was good. Beers were good and one of our party was gluten free - they had a separate menu for this which we thought was brilliant. Will visit again when in the area for sure

We went to have dinner with our family, the staff are very helpful and friendly. I had the steak pie and chips, the best I have tasted in a long time. A good selection of drinks available at the bar.

Cosy pub with friendly atmosphere and pleasant staff. Food was terrific. Can certainly recommend the gammon steak which comes with a mountain of delicious chips.

Having read the reviews, we hoped we had a good place next to the lodge we were staying in at the nearby site. We can't praise this pub enough. It's clean, warm, welcoming and the service is first class. We ate here several times during our week, and had drinks most days. The prices on food and beverages are reasonable. The portion sizes are generous, the food is hot and delicious. There is a specials board, always a great thing to see. We loved Southerners and will return, happy in the knowledge that there is a fab place to eat.

We went here as they allowed dogs in and we were very pleasantly surprised.Probably the best macaroni cheese I have had in many,many years. and the fries were delicious.My partners had the steak pie,only gripe were the new potatoes were a little firm but that was minor.I would definitely recommend.

We visited here whilst staying at the Parkdean nearby for a meal one night. Definitely recommend as drinks and food are reasonably priced compared to Parkdean. The food was delicious and even though it was busy came out fairly quickly. I would advise on reserving a table though as does get fairly busy being near 2 caravan parks.

Stayed in Park Dean resort for 4 nights in May. We ate dinner for 3 out of 4 nights at The Paul Jones Bar and Grill in Southerness. Food is very good, service is fast and friendaly. Great atmosphere, traditional pub/restaurant which is also dog friendly. Good selection of beers and lagers. Overall, the best place to eat in the area bar none.

The food is lovely, high quality perfectly cooked and steaks have come exactly as requested every time we’ve been. The staff are absolutely lovely and welcoming, we went in this time following our wedding with family and friends and had a lovely evening. Very dog friendly, even sell pots of dog ice cream! Couldn’t recommend highly enough.

We were staying nearby & whilst walking past this spot we noticed a 'Dogs Welcome' sign, so we went in for drinks. Thankfully the dog friendly area that we sat in was for over eighteens only & the barman was kind enough to supply drinking water & dog treats. We liked this place so much that we ordered some food too & nipped back in for drinks the next evening. Highly recommended.

We stopped here on Saturday for lunch with family and returned Sunday with our twins again for lunch. We enjoyed the food and would recommend this to friends and family!

We went to Paul Jones for Sunday lunch. For £14 we were expecting a beautiful full roast beef. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. Portion size was pretty much like a kids portion. 2 slices of beef, 3 small potatoes, a spoonful of mash and a tablespoon worth of chopped veg. When I queried why it was so expensive there was no accepting customer review and rectifying the issue like offering more vegetables. It was just an excuse of where they bought the meat. Will never go again

We noticed this pub was dog friendly but decided on our last day in Southerness to have a late lunch early tea here and we were not disappointed. The food is amazing. The pub lovely seating, spacious and warm with friendly staff. We both had the soup of the day which was vegetable and was lovely. I had the fish and chips, wow far better than a chippy fish, the flakes of fish melted in your mouth and the batter was crispy and light. My husband had the pasta and was very impressed with the taste. Portion sizes are good, lovely place and would fully recommend. Would definately return again.

Me and my family visited here in November and the food was absolutely amazing, everything we had was really really good. Huge thanks to the young chef Sinead! The effort put into the food was 100% noticed!! We met her later in the night after finishing her shift and she was nothing but kind and polite and had all the time in the world for us. Me and my family will definitely be visiting again in the future if the standards continue!

We were staying nearby so visited here for drinks and food. Dog and child friendly (the bar isn't child friendly). Food is pretty decent and doesn't take too long, a good place if you are in the area

Wanted to eat somewhere on our last night at Southerness Bay. The kids looked at the menu and decided on here. We weren’t disappointed. We were very welcomed by two gentlemen - one who was not too uneasy on the eye!!!! And seated immediately. We ordered and the food arrived hot and in good time. The sweet and sour chicken was amazing and the fish and chips was so big all 3 of us had a go at eating it! This is bad as we then couldn’t fit dessert in!!! Would recommend a meal here - looks can be deceiving - or doesn’t look much from outside but inside is lovely and clean.

We went twice while staying locally. First time with husband and baby and 2nd with extended family (14 of us in total). Sunday roast was sold out unfortunately but it was still delicious! The food was average for the high price of £100 for three courses for 4 people. This I could accept based on it being a tourist trap.However my son is a bit fussy but they do cater for kids ie the kids menu but not sure they really mean it. We asked if he could have the lunchtime cheese sandwich for his dinner bearing in mind this was only 1630. We were told no the lunch stuff is over no way possible. Then for his dinner he had garlic bread only. However those having soup got bread and butter with it. Eh wait a minute what about some cheese on that. Anyway kid friendly don’t believe it the only friendly is to you credit card.

Every time we visit southerness we have dinner in the PJ. Lyn and the staff are fantastic and make you feel so welcome. The food is so good it is so hard to decide what to have and amazing value for money.

We had read a few negative reviews,but thought we would try The Paul Jones Hotel for ourselves.We had booked a table for a family of eight.They accommodated us very well and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Just left the restaurant very disappointed, this came highly recommended, The food wasn't all that, as if that wasn't bad enough in comes a dog, it was on the table on the seats at one point the owner had to go and get, if I had known dogs were allowed in I would never have booked the owner took up 2 stools to put the dogs things on, and then the owner had a cheek to have a go at me for complaining, the waitress said there was another part for dining if she had know she would have moved us, the dog should never been allowed in, so all in all no atmosphere and food not particularly great in my opinion and possibly fleas into the bargain..will I be back Never

Not particularly good for the price, I would say basic freezer food you would expect from home! £12.50 for fish and chips and the chips served are cheap fries, rather than homemade and portion sizes are small, based on our visit we would not visit again and there a better places to eat out.

Not as good as it was. We're local we've been before it's a twenty minute drive away. First time we've been in a couple of years the food used to be excellent today it really wasn't £12 a main around here that's expensive for pub grub. One of us had a burger I think one of did it was drowned in the most cheap and nasty catering grade mayonnaise on one side and cheap relish on the other. The chips were the worst kind of cheap frozen examples and some frozen catering chips are quite good but these really weren't. Service was so bad we didn't stop for dessert. We were seated no one actually specified wether we ordered at the bar or waited at the table so after twenty minutes of no one appearing at the table I went to the bar turns out it was table service five mins later someone appeared and we ordered. Another 45 minutes passed by and finally the food arrived. There were abundant staff just no one seemed bothered. The problem here is at this time of year I suppose they don't have to be bothered different holiday makers every week if they eat there once that's constant custom but we won't be back.

Booked for lunch on Monday and also Wednesday at 13:30 birthday days while we were on our weeks holiday at Southerness Holiday Park. We had visited the Paul Jones Hotel Last year as well and couldn't fault it. That's why we had no hesitation in booking again this year. On Monday it was great we enjoyed all our meals, including starters and main course and couldn't wait to go back on the Wednesday. We ordered our meals, starters and mains and ate them. We are quite quick eaters compared to a lot of other people. I stood up and had a look at the sweet menu in full view of the staff at the bar. We all decided to have a sweet and when the waitress came over to clear our plates away she asked if we wanted more drinks. I said no but we would like some sweets. We told her what we wanted and she went away and we could hear her talking to a man at the bar. She then came back and said sorry the kitchen is closed!!! I was gobsmacked. I've never, ever known anyone to go into a restaurant for a meal and not be able to finish it. It was 14:13. When we booked for 13:30 they could have said something. We are on holiday. We actually sat around waiting for 13:30. We could have been here earlier!!!Then the waitress came back and said she would make the sweets for us but we refused as we had now lost all notion of it altogether. So we paid and left feeling very let down. So the moral of the story is the kitchen closes at 14:00 so book or arrive at a time that allows you enough time to have a full meal!!! P.s. The food was good.

I have been arranging a family meal for a few weeks now with the hotel whilst being in Southerness for three weeks holiday. My dad Is 80 years of age and wanted to have dinner whilst watching the euro football match. The television was turned down and was miles away, so the table was unsuitable. We ordered fish and chips and the fish was full of grease on a plate and had no seasoning!!! Awful. Disgusting that this hotel charged ridiculously overpriced greasy food!!!Very, very disappointed with tonight and will not be back

Went here for dinner with my husband, parents and 2 year old. We were all still talking the next day about how great the food was! All our meals were delicious. There is a great choice on both the main menu and kids menu. Service was excellent too. Would highly recommend eating here if you are staying in Southerness. It's only about a 5/10 minute walk from the caravan site.

Great food had a baguette meal with chips and salad and macaroni cheese , all fresh and well presented . Dressing on the salad , macaroni hot out the oven . Attentive service , could do with sun parasols we were literally getting fried alive in the baking sun not one brolly for the whole outdoor garden eating area.

Great wee place for food and drinks, only issue was one member of female staff who seemed arrogant and very unfriendly towards us and our little pup. Will not be back due to her.

We booked for 6 o'clock and seated instantly we had steak pie and the 10oz sirloin steak both meals where stunning the staff at this place are on the ball everything was working like clockwork and nothing is a bother to them when I'm back in the area I know where to get great home cooking

I booked this via facebook messenger a few weeks in advance and was glad that I did as it was quite busy! We were seated promptly and our drinks were brought to table quickly. The menu was quite extensive and special board also had tempting options but we both decided to have roast beef dinner. The vegetables were served seperately, which I prefer as you can take what you want from the dish, perfectly seasoned. Very nice beef, home made yorkshire pudding, delicious gravy. The highlight is the mashed potatoes, how you get them so creamy I don't know! Roasties were also plentiful and fab. Service was friendly and efficient. No wait despite it being quite busy. We will return next time we come to the area. 10/10

After being stood at the 'track and trace' book for 5 or so mins staff didn't acknowledge us so we walked through yo find a table outside. Waited for half an hour only for the staff to serve the table behind, ignoring us then to serve the table next to us again we were ignored. Gave it another 10mins then went to ask for a menu, was told food would be 45mins which wouldn't have been an issue. Thought that would instigate them to come and take our drink and food order... Nothing again so left and ordered food elsewhere.

Why has it taken so long for us to eat at this brilliant pub in Southerness. Been drinking Sulweth beer here for weeks so tonite we decided to eat here and we are so pleased we did. An excellent one course meal, reasonably priced, home made, lovely efficient staff. Highly recommended for the home made food.

I visited here with my parents for dinner on Bank Holiday Monday. The pub was very quiet with no atmosphere but we didn’t mind. The potions were huge but not very good quality. Both the chicken burger and the Thai red curry had very chewy/grey meat. Both meals were barely touched and the response from the waitress was “I’ll let the kitchen know.” After reading good reviews, we left very dissatisfied and disappointed.

While staying at southerness caravan park I had been recommended the Paul Jones for dinner. I messaged them on Facebook and had no problems making a reservation. Unfortunately due to covid restrictions alcohol was still not being served so was purely was for a meal for 2 adults and 2 children.On arrival there was a big queue and it did take about 10 min to be seated. We were seated right next to the door for the beer garden and exit so it was pretty cold and constant people passing by opening the door. We ordered our mains which did take a long time but this was expected as the restaurant was very busy. The food came and was nice. The kids portions were huge probably too big.On receiving our bill we were a bit shocked at the price. They charge extra for peas and beans with a kids meal. When they asked what my 2 would like beans or peas I did say they don't like either but instead of telling me it doesn't come with and they are extra, they let me pay for them and them to be left on the plate. My fault for not noticing on menu but at £5.95 a kids meal I expected it would come included. The drink prices for soft drinks were obviously increased to try and combat the no alcohol so overall was quite an expensive meal out.We wouldn't return.

I had a ham and cheese salad, himself had the steak and ale pie. I can't fault the food at all, hot and tasty pie, and my salad was plentiful and well dressed. My only issue is that it wasn't any more special than the sort of '2 for a tenner' meals you can find anywhere. I would also have liked to have seen some Haggis on the menu, but that's just my own personal wish as I was on a Scottish holiday and on a mission to eat as many different haggis meals as I could squeeze into a few days, lol.

Visited Paul Jones for a meal which we had done on numerous occasions. 3 out of 4 starters were luke warm the other went back to be reserved hot with the half eaten bread still left on the plate. Main course served and no knives or forks and had to wait which meant food going cold again. Will not be rushing back

We have been here for the last 4 weekends to meet Dad. He lives at Southerness so initially it was to save him as he informally drives to us, but its a real gem! So warm and welcoming. The food is outstanding. We have ordered from the special board every time and it is fantastic quality! Keep it up! Cant wait to return.

Attended at The Paul Jones Hotel on 8th October 2020 for dinner with friend to end our holiday at Southerness, Friendly staff, great food and or dog was also allowed to dine with us.

Staff very friendly and welcoming however the food was overpriced greasy and overall disappointing. Real shame as it seemed such a lovely spot but would not return again.
