Recently told this had been refurbished, we decided to visit for an early evening drink. We didn’t have one because the place is an untidy, grubby wreck with several dogs running wild, no greeting from the bar staff - it was appalling.

Thought I'd give it a try on my Friday night pub bucket list as I have been to pretty much all Swindon area pubs with very mixed results over the past two years. Welcoming lady behind bar in an empty bar/lounge area but very affable offering a choice of keg beers. Ordered and walked into second busier bar area....not good!. Evidently mainly locals which was fair enough, but one particular apparently uncontrollable 'customer' who was totally oblivious of others, disgustingly foulmouthed, loudly obnoxious individual who was obviously extremely drunk and so loud with it that it totally ruined the whole atmosphere. When she started going behind the bar and pouring her own (so it seemed??) pints I wondered whether she was staff or god forbid, possibly the landlady??? Bar lady who served me seemed rather concerned at her behaviour but not particularly able to deal with her yob behaviour. Maybe she was just a member of staff afraid to upset the boss.???? Who knows?? Entirely ruined the visit for me and I suspect would for any visitor trying the place out of that particular person is a regular...if it can survive on just a local clientele basis who can tolerate such blatant anti social behaviour, then good luck...not revisiting.

Good sized portions and prompt service. All the family enjoyed the evening. Lots of homemade specials available as well. Atmosphere very friendly and cosy.

A mess...cigarette butt's everywhere outside. Even used ear buds. The mens toilets stink and are frequently filthy. Extremely unenthusiastic bar staff. Half of its shut off now. The food is written on a price of paper in a clipboard next to bar. Everything very expensive. Outside is very very messy. Grim. They got a 1 star for food hygiene recently. Am not surprised.

Booked a meal for Christmas Eve, as we were staying locally. Got there as it looked like the locals had been on the pop all day and we thought 'What the hell have we walked into here'? Good pints, first noticed. Ordered food from what appeared to be an understandable for the time, limited menu. Thai chicken blew my mind! Never have I enjoyed a meal so good as this, - perfection served with great pints of London Pride. Is there any more to ask for? Talking with friendly locals having a 40th birthday bash on the next table was most enjoyable. (No way has she reached 40.) And the icing on the cake was the back-room staff coming out with a merry Xmas cheer. An unforgettable evening, in a pub run like a pub should be run. We want to go back, and reccomend this place for its down to earth pleasantness. Well done!

We used this pub once, we passed it on a drive out and thought we'd pop in for a drink.. Its hard to know where to start, using the rear entrance we were welcomed by a very untidy garden, bits of furniture left outside a kind of old marquee which didnt seem to have any purpose and a metal frame just hanging from the side of the building.. the garden was quite simply a mess, the grass needed cutting and there were cigarette butts everywhere. Going through the door was a large pile of bags and childrens toys no idea why they were there. I'd like to say it was just an old fashioned pub, quirky and full of chatacter. But its none of those things it needs a deep clean, painting in colours that give at least some sense of coordination and some money spent on the fittings and furniture... Just to finish off our experience the gents toiled had been used and not flushed and the ladies toilet had toilet paper all over the floor... this isn't just a lack of attention to detail this is a bar thats not had any love, care or maintenance in quite some time..

At 4pm we decided to order a takeaway and rang the pub only to be told it had to be done online. We then selected our food online and filled in the form with name, address etc. We spend several minutes watching the progress bar count down and assuring us it wouldn't be much longer and that we were nearly there. Then we received a message to say our order could not be taken. It gave 3 reasons but not the one it turned out to be. We rang the pub again and was tolkd it was because we had rung before 5pm!! Nowhere does it say you must order after 5pm and, in fact, says they are open from 12 to 2100!! Pubs are telling us they have suffered during the pandemic but this one does not seem to want your business --- unless it is after 5pm!!

I recommend this place wholeheartedly, what this pub has done since the new owners took over is phenomenal. I just ordered a take away curry consisting of Veggie Korma, Onion Bhaji, Saag aloo, Rice, Garlic Naan and popadoms. My partner had a Chicken Tikka with chips (yes I know!). It is quite simply the best curry and take away we've both ever had. I used to live in Slough and I've had a lot of Indian food and what the Pats are serving is very special. It is fresh, it is cooked to order and I encourage everyone else to try it. The owners of the pub have also done a huge amount of generous things in Chiseldon and given away 1000s of meals to the elderly during lockdown and offered free meals to kids during the half term break. We are lucky to have Sanjay and Sunny as part of the village and we should support them.

Visited Saturday 26th Sept 2020 to see the talented Darren Hunt play live - absolutely the major highlight of the evening. Having booked a table we were shown to a table that had been added as an afterthought right next to the toilets and away from any view of the entertainment. We asked to be relocated, which to be fair was completed. We were happy with the new location and ordered food and drink from the table. (Masks need to be worn when walking through the pub now) which was followed too by the staff who provided us with excellent service. The beer was great as was the music and service- but that’s where it stops. The food was just about average although served hot - it was dry and unappealing. ( I had the rack of ribs) I forgot to ask for fries and instead chips the size of Stonehenge were served. The pub itself is disappointing in the layout and just looks like bits have been added on here and there. It’s a great shame as this could be so nice and attract great local custom. The last time I visited this pub was back in the 1990’s - it was obviously different - but still wasn’t the best in the Villiage. I have to say bar an extension and a few flat screen TVs nobody else need worry too much about competition from here.As I said - a gold mine waiting to be unearthed- still!

So.... we arrived an hour early sat in the bar and had drinks... so far so good! We sat and waited for 45 mins for our starters without anyone informing us of delays. We asked about our starters being late and unfortunately was informed that we should have been informed about the late food... starters came out, I had the risotto, it’s not a risotto, unfortunately it was boiled risotto rice with veg... not creamy and not saucy as you would expect from any risotto. Mains served, all mains apart from the “Cornish” main was brilliant... the menu did not explain that all the food was cold, not an issue if the menu didn’t mislead you into thinking you might be expecting something other than you did! Complained and comments had been brushed aside, asked for manager, informed manager had already gone home? (Perhaps managers should stay on a newly opened venue) had my cold main taken off the bill.. a briliant atmosphere but unfortunately I won’t be returning until teething issues have been resolved. Just a note, when I complained I was informed they have had serveal complaint about the Cornish dish not being hot, if that’s the case, change the printed menues! If food is late at least give complimentary bread to nibble on!

The Patriot Arms has changed its name to the Chisledon Smoke House and Grill and what a change! The interior has been refurbished to quite a high standard and it is now a pleasure to drink and dine there. Six of us dined there on Saturday evening, five had the the smoked king prawns for starters and one person the tempura battered onion with a dip, all the starters were excellent. The choice of main meals was varied, I shared a smoked meat platter with my daughter complete with really tasty dips, our plates were completely clean, not a scrap left. The fish and chips were outstanding, the fish sourced from Cornwall, two of my guests had the fish and chips, the other two chose smoked meat dishes, which were they said delicious, once again clean plates. Only two of us prompted for deserts, the main courses being ample for the rest of usJust to sum up, the new Chisledon Smoke Houes and Grill is without doubt the place to visit for good food, good service and two very good chefs..

Two of us arrived but place was totally empty except for a young girl behind bar. Furniture was extremely tatty, and had to pay £10 for a Cider and a glass of red wine. The menu was very bland but was told there was one last Lamb Shank that was not on the menu - seemed OK on the balance of probabilities - wrong decision,It arrived unceremoniously on a plate and was told the cutlery was in a jar on the table - eating ends up so goodness knows how many hands had touched them. Was not asked if I wanted any sauces or mustard and was left to get on with the dish. The so called Lamb Shank had a very large bone with minimal meat - no, actually a very small amount of meat and the gravy had a tang to it. The barmaid eventually asked if everything was OK to which I replied that it wasn't, to which she just smiled and walked away. I have to put this down to her naivety otherwise it could only be described as sheer arrogance. When she came to collect the plate that had hardly been touched I asked whether there was any rebate because the meal was awful to which she smiled and said "NO, SORRY".For the sake of a pathetic £10 meal and poor service this venue is now being featured on Trip Advisor in a very negative way - Whoever runs this establishment have only themselves to blame.MY ADVISE - AVOID IT TOTALLY UNLESS YOU JUST WANT AN EXPENSIVE DRINK IN THE SMOKE TENT OUTSIDE.

It was a wet dreary afternoon and the Patriot Arms mirrored this being a soulless dreary unwelcoming place. The Patriots Arms lists it's closing time as being 11.00pm during the week. I arrived with my wife at just gone 10.45. There were two other drinkers at the bar with nearly full pints. Couldn't see anybody serving for a while. When the barman came out he announced 'sorry guys, I've called last orders'. I didn't even bother to try and argue, there was no point. He clearly just wanted to finish up and go home. This is a perfect example of why this pub has got no heart and no soul, and under the current regime never will have. Bar staff who are so disinterested are a complete waste of time. Don't even bother trying to defend it. There is no defence.

Having been to Swindon outlet with my sister and best friend we decided to call in at the "Patriot Arms" on our way back to Melksham. The pub holds very fond memories for my sister and me as although we are both in our seventies our Grandparents had the pub and we spend our childhood there as our parents had the shop next door. "The Pat's" as we fondly remember it, hasn't changed a great deal but it's been extended and the new landlady who has only just taken it on, although she'd managed it prior to taking the tenancy, was really pleasant and helpful telling us that the rather tired decor was going to be changed. We decided to have a bar snack while there, not wanting a large meal and all three of us chose the baked Camembert with relish and wonderful warm special bread (which I can't remember the name of) and a bowl of cheesy chips, well it was really scrumptious and with half a pint of real ale it couldn't have got much better. Our best wishes to the new landlady and her family I hope she manages to turn it into a really great family pub like it was all those years ago and she's as happy living there as we were. Go try it people let's keep our good country pubs in business.

Staying in a nearby hotel we saw this pub on the way which advertised food and football we decided it was a winner for us.We went for an evening meal on a Friday night, on walking in it felt like a scene from the league of gentlemen, the locals stopped and stared and the tumbleweed rolled across the floor...only joking but almost! We had a quick look at the menu and decided to choose something off of the specials board, Red Lamb Curry. The girl serving us was great, really friendly, but the woman behind the bar could have done to take a leaf out of her book. The food came, there was lots of it, it smelt lovely and tasted awesome. We couldn't even manage a pudding. After, we stayed to watch the football which the girl put on for us as there wasn't anyone else wanting to watch it.We decided based purely on the food to come back for a second night, Saturday. We asked if we could have the food on a tab but the bar woman took my bank card but not for any of the locals, suppose they have had strangers run off without paying before?Anyway again chose something off the specials board, myself had wild bore and chorizo pie and my husband has chicken in Parma and Brie. Again the food was super, couldn't fault it, well presented, cute veg accompaniments. The price was good also. If we come back next year we hope the food is as good and locals not to be so curious to the strange faces!DEFINITELY WORTH A VISIT

The landlady makes you feel like an old friend when you walk in and is always jolly and happy to see you. My husband and I love the patriot and would like nothing more than to see it full at all times. Go have a meal there, you will most definitely not be disappointed! Best food ever!!!! 5***** all the way, fantastic!

Having left a dark dingy motel looking for food, atmosphere and BT sports I was delighted to come across the Patriot.Good specials board, I chose Whitebait followed by Brie filled Chicken, Atlantic Ale was in fine fettle and the live band provided a good background to the football I watched on BT sports, both young ladies behind the bar were friendly, good value all round.

We just had a great lunch here, the beef burger home made and cooked rare as it should be.The chicken was a whole breast butterflied and pan fried. Perfectly cooked, if I had a gripe the garlic mayo was not garlic enough.Plenty to eat and the Atlantic IPA was in great nick. Really recommend a visit, you don't often get good food and great beer.Dog friendly, they got their drink before we did!Go.

Since we live in Chiseldon, we decided it was time to support our local pub. We were not disappointed! The food was excellent, if a little pricey. My wife had the pate followed by cod with prawns. I sampled the garlic mushrooms and the roast chicken stuffed with spinach. All of these were delicious. The menu gave ample choice, with a good range of different foods. The service was relaxed, friendly and prompt. The only drawback was the music from the jukebox in the bar was a little too loud for our tastes, but this is being picky!!With drinks, the meal came to just under £54.The Patriots Arms is well worth a visit.

As soon as you walk in the patriot you are made to feel very welcome, a warm and comfortable place to be. We have had food from both the Al'carte and bar menue both of which have been excellent. Can not fault the food or the people that work there, highly recommend place to visit and both my husband and I agree that we will be making it a regular place to visit.

5 of our family ate at the Patriots Arms 3 times over the Christmas period. This included their Christmas menu that had a fabulous selection and exceeded expectations in quality and taste. Two of us opted for the 4 course and 3 for the 2 course. The Shredded Duck with chilli and garlic dressing as starter was mouth wateringly delicious. We all had the turkey as main course and it was done to perfection! Dessert selection was awesome. Decided to come back on two more occasions in 10 days and had an equally pleasurable experience. Battered cod really good, Garlic Mushrooms delightful, Chicken and Brie yummy, and sticky toffee pudding to get a few calories finished things off perfectly! The very personable Manager, Emma and her team did a really great job in making sure we were happy with our meals and we had a very fun time. Thanks, these were some very comfortable, friendly and satisfying dining experiences!

I've just got home feeling very full and content having had a wonderful Christmas meal at the Patriots. We had booked a table for five and I had no idea it would be anything like as good as it was. In anticipation of the meal I had not had any lunch so I was extremely hungry. When the food arrived it was just as well. There was absolutely no shortage of anything. Plenty of well cooked, succulent turkey with delicious stuffing, plenty of all types of vegetables and a gravy boat for every plate? wow.. that's a first! You needed a big appetite to do this justice and that is exactly what I did. I cleaned my plate because it was just so tasty and flavoursome. Next I ordered a selection of cheeses and biscuits. I cannot tell you the amount of restaurants I've eaten in where they do not give you enough biscuits to go with the cheese. Not so here. Again there was plenty of everything. My wife and friends had the chocolate tart and that again looked absolutely delicious. All followed with seasonal mince pies!Food was great, wine was good. Attentive service by Layla and very professionally overseen and managed by Emma. All this came in at around £20 per head and let me tell you.. that is awesome value for money. At my request the chef came out and I was pleased to shake his hand for doing a great job.You will see from my other reviews that I'm not always an easy person to please. To me that is the whole purpose of Tripadvisor... to warn other users of either a good or a bad experience. If I pay good money and it's not worth it I've got no hesitation in letting people know.At the moment I cannot speak highly enough of the dining experience at the Patriots. I could not fault it in any way. Merry Christmas, many thanks to all and we will be back!!

4 of us went out for lunch, this pub was not our destination, however, we were driving past and went in. It's a big Pub, lots of space and family friendly. We ordered at he bar and the barman was really polite, friendly and helpful. We sat down and our food arrived quickly, it was really good, hot, plentiful and a little different. My wife is allergic to gluten and they really helped her with her choice of dish. My friend and I had fish & chips which was really good. The prices are reasonable and the quality, presentation and cooking excellent. Will definitely call in again. Try it you won't be disappointed .

Went to the annual Villagers Christmas Meal last night with 20 or so other people. The food was fantastic and much improved now there is a new chef. There were ample very attentive and friendly bar staff/waiting staff and we were all served together. The manageress Emma was on hand to ensure that we all had everything we required. It was a great night and we will definitely be back again in the new year. Well done!!!!

New chef and lovely food. Steaks are particularly good. Proper fresh cooked quality food. With regard to the poor reviews, these were a good while back and the pub has changed hands a couple of times since then. There's a great atmosphere, bar staff great and will do what they can to help with any specific requests. Food is brilliant - give it a try. Every meal we have had lately has been gorgeous.

In the village of Chiseldon, this pub has over the years, several managers all attempting to make a go of it in these tricky times. When I visit family, I always make an effort to pop in and occasionally have a bite to eat. I've never been disappointed with the food or drink. Good pub grub and decent beer for the price.

Second time visit to The Patriots Arms but this time there was a new chef. The food was fabulous, you can have proper pub food or choose from A La Carte. A great choice even for me a fussy eater. A good choice of ale and kept well. The staff are so friendly and helpful, they make you feel very welcome. Shame about all the televisions!!

This venue has recently changed hands and has a completely new team. Local competition having gained from this pubs declining popularity are now seeing a business change. There is a new chef, and his food is bringing customers back. Sunday Lunch in particular is fabulous. Ideal for families all year round.

The pub had fallen into a tired and dilapidated condition and the reviews reflected this. We had noticed that the new landlord had put a lot of effort into refurbishment and complete redecoration so decided to give it a try. The restaurant has been completely overhauled with new seating areas. The standards of everything are now much higher than they ever were.. that is surroundings, service and of course quality of food. We'll definitely be visiting regularly.

Heard such good things about the roast dinner here. Only to get there on a cold wet lunchtime to be told they are not doing them in the summer. But it was still on the menu! We ordered other food off the menu the gravy was thick and looked like tar the other meal was dry and tasteless.

Cant really descibe how bad this pub was, i ordered a pizza off the menu and it had a maggot in the pizza as well as gone off bacon. Absoultly distgusting. Will not be going back and only took 2 pounds off the bill and staff was not friendly at all.

It was July 4th, the pub was decked out in American flags. They were setting up for a barbecue and celebration with a live band later on that afternoon. We sat outside in their lovely garden and had a couple of drinks, beer and delicious hard cider. Sorry we missed the July 4th party!

We stopped here on our way down to Wales in our motorhome. We called the landlord in advance and he was more than happy to let us to park overnight in his car park; we in return spent the evening in the pub and had a very pleasant meal, reasonably priced. This is a friendly pub with good food and service and is just a couple of minutes drive off the M4 motorway - so very convenient if crossing country. Would recommend it and would return.

Me and a friend were enjoying a lovely spa weekend at a local hotel but fancied a nice Sunday dinner, we found another pub nearby but they stopped serving food at 3. It was 3.05 haha. So we drove a little further along and found the patriot. The girl who served us was lovely and friendly and helpful I am very fussy about my Sunday roasts and when I'm at home in London I don't go to pubs for Sunday dinner as they're usually pretty poor with 'fake' roast potatoes ( ugh ) .This was genuinely the BEST pub dinner I've Ever had. The beef was cut thick and was so tender the gravy was proper meaty gravy thick and tasty the Yorkie was fantastic and the roast potatoes were just simply amazing My friend ( who's a little bit posh ) ;) said her food was stupendous. Would highly recommend for the Sunday roast. This lunchtime after leaving the hotel before setting off for home me and my husband visited for lunch based on the day before. The bar woman was miserable I tried to engage her in conversation but she just ignored me. She gave us our drinks took the money and never spoke a word We didn't even know how much they were till we got our change and looked at it We ordered 2 beef burgers and chips and they were really lovely. The burger was tasty ( tiny bit dry . No sauces ) but meaty and thick and plenty of food. Shame about her tardiness as it put me off a little bit Though I'd go back for the amazing roast alone :)

We've eaten here many times over the years but it sadly went downhill so we haven't visited in some time. Noticed that it had been taken over earlier this year and reviews looked great so we went on Saturday for my husband's birthday. So glad we did! The refurb is lovely - seating is much more spaced out than previously. Team were all super friendly and efficient - lots of smiles and conversation if you wanted it - just how we like it. It was a very busy Saturday night and they looked full. Service as the evening went on slowed up a little but not drastically so and it didn't detract from our lovely evening. Food was exceptional! We had the crispy olives to nibble on, the trout for mains (please keep this on the menu it was amazing) and vanilla creme choux pastry and roast pineapple for dessert. It was all stunning! We only live a few miles away and are so glad to have a top notch eatery on our doorstep! Already re-booked to go with family for lunch in a few weeks time so fingers crossed we'll have the same wonderful experience! Top marks to the chef!!

Poorly trained staff gave our order waited an hour, no one is aware of a table not having been served, we checked, the order hadn’t been put through. Staff and bar man have no idea what whats going on, would rather chat to each other than look a customer in the eye, wasn’t busy. They are not trained that there’s a table there that’s been in a long time but no food. We were then promised it would be out in 5 mins but still took 15 a total of 1hr 20 mins wait for two sandwiches, no reduction on the bill either just poor training won’t be going back.

We go here quite a bit, lovely new pub with nice atmosphere. My to go to dish has always been the Plantbased Burger. It was sooo good even my meat eating friends would have it. It was like a 10/10. But when we went the other day we found to our disappointment you’ve changed the plant burger to a beetroot burger??! It was eatable, but only a 3/10. Please bring the old vegan burger back.

Gave a 2 because the waitress was lovely. Food terrible. Items missing, cold food, congealed cauliflower cheese and overcooked potatoes. Would not return! Did complain but fell on deaf ears.
