We had booked a table and four of us enjoyed sitting outside at the rear of the property for lunch. The pub has a incoherent system of routing you out to the side of the building to the patio attge rear, rather than straight through the building, where you see a no entry sign on the chair. Made no sense at all, just irritating. We ordered from a good choice of mains, small plates or starters. I really enjoyed a vegetarian aubergine dish, with breadcrums and garlic bread. Othere had burgers and peri peri chicken. Staff were mainly friendly. They hold your credit card as a means of ensuring people pay.

Without the benefit of prior research, I ended up in this delightful pub after a wander round the village of Wansford with its lovely honey-coloured limestone architecture. The striking stained glass window at the entrance, best viewed from inside the pub, tells you that this is an out of the ordinary restaurant. The meal was the main vegetarian option, an aubergine-gratin prepared in advance and heated in a microwave, but this ensured that the aubergine was well cooked. It was accompanied by a salad of rocket sprinkled with grated parmesan: a great idea, and not one I'd ever encountered before. Also provided was a swiss roll-style bread, which neither my wife nor I could put a name to. Good coffee was also served, though they didn't have a non-milk whitener. The main dining room is quite narrow but there is a large conservatory at the rear, so parties can be catered for. Definitely worth a detour.

Came here last minute on our drive home. Very accommodating and great service. It was Sunday so a slight reduced menu with the usual Sunday roasts. The food was fantastic, including the desserts we probably shouldn't have ordered (eyes bigger than our bellies!). We will definitely be back.

We went on a Saturday night for dinner, early evening so before the rush later on. The menu was pretty basic and pricey on the whole, I eat everything but nothing really appealed so went for the burger in the end....which was dry and lacking in flavour. The so-called Hazelnut Creme Brûlée had no hazelnut whatsoever and tasted like an ordinary brûlée which was disappointing. £50 for two including drinks, for this would expect better quality food for this price....and the service was poor, we sort of got forgotten about towards the end and didn't really feel welcome there. Won't be going back.

I really enjoyed dining at this pub. There is the "proper pub" area around the bar, and then a proper dining section near the back of the restaurant. The pub offers a small selection or real ale, as well as the typical stuff. The food is fresh, and the menu changes seasonally. I would recommend the venison burger. As this is one of the nicer restaurants in the area, I recommend getting there early if you are attending for lunch or supper, it can get crowded quick (particularly on the weekends). Also, I have found that lunch and the sandwiches are average-priced; supper is a bit more expensive than their lunch and sandwich options.

Clearly The Paper Mills has been going through a rough time of late which is a shame as it's always been good.As we had enjoyed the food at the sadly now closed Bistro over the road before the team moved here we thought we'd give it a go.We were delighted. The food was all delicious and portions generous. Special mention should go to the fish and chips which was the best I have ever had (and I've had quite a lot). The beer had also been perfectly kept, as it always has been here.My only slight negative was that the waiting staff appeared very nervous.

My family and I are repeat visitors, we visited many times and I had past commented that it does the best steak I've ever had, however our latest visit left much to be desired. The double dipped hand cut chips have gone in favour of Mcfries, and other adjustments to shed cost from the meal which spoilt the overall feel and just made it seem a bit like a harvester, 3 steaks ordered and all arrive bloody as hell when medium was requested. Gonna give it a miss next time due to the food standard. Table service was prompt and very good as to be expected from a reputable pub.

We have been going to this pub/restaurant since it reopened as there are not many decent restaurants in the area. Was always impressed with the menu, service and atmosphere. Recently however we have been increasingly disappointed. Went there on Friday, menu has reverted to pub-type, the only decent red meat option(steak) was finished. I had plaice but half the fish was taken up with a very unappetising black-skinned roe, otherwise Ok. The minuscule salad had no dressing and the chips were covered in raw garlic. When I complained about these things I was told "some people like the roe" ie tough if you don't; they did apologise for the salad but there was no offer of compensation. The desserts were not much better: my lemon tart was lemony but the filling barely covered the bottom of the tart and the sugar topping on the the creme brûlée was soft and soggy. The only hot dessert was chocolate fondant. Wine was good and service ok but we were left wondering what has happened to this lovely restaurant. Most of the food on offer now seems to have come out of the freezer! Quite simply, what we had for the price was outrageous.

I went to the Paper Mills on Christmas Eve with my parents, my son and 4 friends for evening dinner. The pub was very busy with a nice atmosphere.Unfortunately from start to finish the meal was a disappointment. The food was ok at best but after 3 courses I was still hungry. The service was very slow throughout the meal. However most disappointing of all was the fact that it was cold where we were sat in the restaurant to the point where coats had to be put back on.It's a shame because the pub is in a great location. More emphasis should be given to customer service than making money and cost cutting. I very rarely write bad reviews but felt it was needed in this case. When you pay good money as a minimum you should get good food and service in warm surroundings.

This is our local which we used to visit weekly but no longer I'm afraid, for some time now since the latest chef. There is only one choice for vegetarians and if you don't happen to like that, it's too bad! Having worked in the catering industry I have come across this arrogance where chef believes you should eat what he's prepared to make and not what customers would like. Won't be back for a long time and have noticed that it's no longer the thriving bustling place it once was which is a real shame, but guess we're not the only ones disillusioned with the changes. Prices seem to have got silly too.

After reviewing the on line menu made a booking for a late afternoon lunch. There was no indication on the website or at the time of booking that the regular menu was replaced with a shortened Sunday lunch menu. Arrived on schedule at 3.30 pm bit uneasy that the place was virtually empty and was given the shortened Sunday lunch menu - asked at what time the regular menu would be available and advised that this would be when they had sold out of roast dinners ! - which could be 4 pm or 5 pm or 6 pm or perhaps not at all. Promptly left and headed for the George at Stamford - no reservation but seated immediately and presented with a full menu choice and enjoyed a grand meal at a restaurant which operates to customer needs and not its own convenience.Wont be visiting the Paper Mills again which is a great shame as the food when available is pretty good.

We went to The Paper Mills for an impromptu late Sunday afternoon lunch. The place was almost empty and we ordered two roast beef. Food arrived but a very haphazard service beyond this meant that we had plates of meat with a Yorkshire pudd and then a wait for veg, a wait for knives and forks and a further wait as the potatoes were sent back as they were cold.Having said all this the food was very, very tasty and the drinks were not on the bill when we came to pay. We wanted to get out of Peterborough and have a quiet meal in one of the villages, Wansford is always a favourite so we chose the Paper Mills and were not disappointed. It manages to mix a pub feel with a choice of corners to sit and eat - we could have chosen the conservatory but just being a couple were pleased to be shown into a snug area with just three tables. Food was the basic pub choice including one veg and one fish - I chose the starter size for a main, it was quite enough for me (60+ female!) so the main would have satisfied the hungriest person. Overall a pleasant Friday evening meal.

My mother and I called in here yesterday as we were passing on the way to an appointment. Upon entering the premises we were greeted by a friendly staff member and shown to our table in the conservatory area of the venue. The room was tastefully decorated and looked inviting but was a little too warm for our liking. There was also no music playing and as the only people in the pub initially was lacking atmosphere. The menu was presented: the prices are slightly higher than you would have expect for a pub establishment however, when the food arrived it was well presented, tasty and plentiful. (we had a starter at around £7 each and a main course - Shepeards Pie at £14 each). The service was friendly but a little slow, I also had to go to the bar to purchase another drink as there was no service staff around once the food had been served. Would I go there again: yes I would as the food quality was great but with a little detail to service standards and speed of food service, this could be a fantastic dining establishment.

My partner and I visited last night for a meal, had asked for a quiet table in the Conservatory, ended up sat next to a draughty stairwell in a back part of the pub, with an air freshner in it, that intermittingly let out a squirt of freshner...Yuck! Service was shocking, we had to ask to order, the bottle of wine was plonked in the middle of the table, and we were told it has a screw top! The food wasn't really anything to write home about, waited 20 mins for my dessert, ended up cancelling it, whereupon it arrived in front of me....My partner commented it was the first time he has never left a tip for 25 years, and he regularly dines out in London! Can I suggest Mattoni's Italian in Hampton, lovely polite staff, excellent service, food amazing!

We had a nice meal, not quite restaurant food but certainly not pub grub. The restaurant area is clean but we felt the pub wasn't very welcoming.

Came here with family and friends. Had a lovely meal though because it was Burghley weekend the service was probably a little slower than what it most likely is. I had the garlic chicken Kiev. It was, quiet possibly, the most garlicky food I have ever eaten. Absolutely delicious however I shall probably regret it tomorrow! Others in the party had salmon and whitebait - all received exceedingly well. As for pudding, I can highly recommend the brûlée. Well worth a visit - but go at a slightly quieter time I would say.

Popped in for lunch and were made to feel unwelcome. Staff member frowned, looked at his watch and said a grudging "ok" when we asked if we could get some lunch...... and it was only 1 o'clock. We stuck it out and to be fair the food was very good. When we pointed out the frosty reception to the ?Manager, she just said "oh" and seemed almost as disinterested as the guy who'd "welcomed" us in the first place. We'll stick to one of the many friendly pubs in the area.

Pulled off the A1 looking for a coffee on Friday to Wansted. What a gem, the staff were very helpful considering we were a bit late for a lunch time sandwich, the sandwiches we had were absolutely lovely with a to die for dressing on the side salad. A pretty village built of the local honey coloured stone, were only sorry we did not have time to investigate further. Thank goodness we did not wait to go to the the Ram Jam further up the A1 as now we know it is closed. A shame in some ways, but having now found this lovely place will be making it our "must stop there" destination for refreshments etc. in future.

Me and some friends stopped here for a drink after a bikeride around the local area. It's a large pub/restaurant, the staff were friendly enough however i definitely felt out of place in my cycling shorts as everyone in there seems to be in suits and look at you a bit odd.We didnt eat but would maybe go back as the food looked ok.

As the paper mills is our local pub we try to visit occasionally and it has always been consistantly good. We visited for a family meal with 6 adults a 3 yr old and a baby on a saturday lunchtime. I had fish and chips which at £14 is quite expensive but it is a huge plate of food and it comes with home made mushy peas and tartae sauce.Eveyone else in the group enjoyed the food and most of us had desserts. I had the lemon tart which was ok but a bit runny and a bit over sharp so it wasn't so great but generally the meal overall was really good. The service was good and friendly and there is always a good drinks selection.

Whilst on a boating holiday on the River Nene we thought that we would go into Wansford for a couple of drinks. We found "The Papermills", I'm so glad we did.We decided to have an evening meal there, in the garden, it was so lovely. The food was just right and presented very well. The young girl that served us was very polite and nothing was too much trouble for her.Its a lovely place.

We visited the Paper Mills intending to have a quick drink before heading home but after having a look at the menu we were enticed to book a table. The Paper Mills is a lovely old pub, with pleasant staff and it has a good atmosphere. We had read the good reviews it had achieved so were eagerly anticipating our meal. We didn’t have a starter but went straight to the main course, both of us ordering rib-eye steaks. There was much to commend in the meal; the salad, chips, tomato and mushroom were tasty although the onion ring was a little greasy. Sadly the big let down was the star attraction; the rib-eye steak was extremely fatty and contained gristle. The meat was also quite tasteless. At least a third of the 8ounce portion was inedible. We did mention this to the waiting staff and received an inadequate excuse from the chef together with an apology. We have experienced fatty, grisly steaks in other restaurants but they have not charged £22 for a meal, whereas we have usually been pleased with meals at those restaurants that charge comparable prices. After the poor main course, we decided to cut our losses and declined the dessert menu. There are good aspects to the Paper Mills but it’s a shame that, on the occasion we visited, there was evidence that they don’t source quality ingredients. There are just too many good restaurants nearby charging comparable prices that provide consistently good food for us to take another chance on getting a mediocre meal at the Paper Mills.

Having stopped off here previously for a drink, we decided to treat ourselves and book here for a meal. On arrival at 7pm for a 7.45 booking, the only place for us to sit and have a drink was at our table. Our table was classed as being in the 'restaurant', however we were just sat in a walk through between the kitchen, bar and restaurant. Our view was of an area at the side of the bar full of cleaning products, employees shoes, and dirty glasses. This was also where staff collated when they weren't serving. We ordered a crab salad and French onion soup as starters. I asked for a flat iron steak as a main but was advised that unless I was having it cooked medium or rare (I wanted medium/well done) it would be too tough! I then opted for beer battered fish and chips and my boyfriend ordered duck. As I ordered the fish I enquired as to whether it was filleted, and was told they do their best to remove all bones but occasionally one or two are found. We were advised to order early to get in front of two larger parties, which we did. Our starters arrived over 30 minutes later, behind one of the larger parties who ordered after us! Being sat in the kitchen walk through we saw all food coming out. My French onion soup was lovely, accompanied by fresh bread. The toast served with the crab salad was absolutely charred, which totally masked the taste of the crab. I swapped my fresh bread with the toast, and I understand the crab salad was then very good. But tasting the toast, I can only describe it as tasting of ash. When the waitress cleared away we informed her of our disappointment. Our main course was then brought out. The duck was amazing. However, after having 2 mouthfuls of the fish, I had found 7 bones. This ruined the meal for me, and at £12, I expected better. This was also highlighted when our plates were cleared, I even heard the comment 'Christ' from the kitchen when my plate was returned. I was advised that fish was filleted on the premises and they apologised for missing the bomes. We chose not to have deserts, and on receipt of a full bill, having complained about 2 meals, I was bitterly disappointed. When this was pointed out, after consultation with another member of staff, one starter was deducted. Whilst some aspects of the meal were fine, we were disappointed by some of the food, and particularly our table. I felt for a total cost of £60 for 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 drinks each, I would have expected so much more.

Been here a few times now. Decent well cooked food. Olde worlde pub, has a lovely ambience. Polite, discreet staff who did not rush us to finish our meal. Food is rather expensive for a pub though .Seating in several areas including a conservatory and one or two smaller more intimate rooms for the quieter ones amongst us !

Had a lovely Sat. lunch here with friends and resolved to try the evening menu so went for my birthday with husband and 2 teenage children. Monday night and pre-booked. We were warned they had a big party in so to go for early table, 7.00pm. In fact we had traffic problems and were a little late, but were welcomed and this made no difference to our service, which was excellent.Food was very good, both main courses and puddings, and the service was very friendly but discreet. No alcohol consumed as we were driving, and bill was very reasonable. (c.£60)I would recommend to anyone, and want to go for my birthday again this year.

Went here as a party of 4! Really close to where we live, good to start! Walked in and there were 4 of the most pretentious people stood at the bar, would they move for a scum bag like me? No! But that's not a reflect on the pub! A reflect on the pub is that it managed to bring me back into a good mood after that! The drink sizes (wine) were very good! The food (steak and chips) were amazing. Was a little expensive but the quality was worth it! Staff were very friendly! Very impressed

The Paper Mills in Wansford had been recommended. It was very, very poor. First job - tell three different waiting staff that you do not want to order wine until you have chosen your food. Job two - find the gravadlax hidden underneath a pile of leaves. Job three - eat a very ordinary sirloin with fatty chips. Job four - complain about the overly sweet. toffee-like liquid 'thing' that passed as a 'tarte tatin'. Job five - get them to correct the bill. Five main courses and there were only four of us. This really is pub food at its poorest. The following night we visited The Berkeley Arms at Wymondham near Melton Mowbray and our bill for four people was the same - yet the quality was poles apart. That simply reiterated how bad this place was. Suffice to say - we will not be returning.... Try the Berkeley Arms - you will not be disappointed!

The menu was very limited, no disabled access to the restaurant so we had to eat in the draughty bar. Food was very expensive and not very special, although the portion size was alright. My poached fruit dessert should not have been served on a plate, because when it was brought to the table, the fruit juice spilled into my lap and my handbag. I felt sorry for the waitress.

The first time my husband and I went to this pub was a few years ago. A welcome break whilst walking our dog from Alwalton to Wansford and back again. Sated by a pint of cider and a delicious baguette each, we continued, homeward bound. Today, we again visited the Paper Mills. Though this time we were booked in for a 'proper' lunch, with our three year old daughter and my mum and dad. All I can say is why oh why did we not come back sooner? As soon as we walked through the door, we knew the place was obviously popular! As busy as it was though, the service we received was impeccable. Friendly, polite, efficient, but at no time did we feel rushed. As for the food? Wow! Delicious, generous and beautifully presented. What more could you ask for? Tasty food, great service and relaxed ambience . A perfect Sunday lunch!

We ate here on a Sunday Lunch time, I would say this was a better experience than when we ate outside in the summer. We booked a table ahead and were shown to a table in the snug, which was nicely placed I thought. Rather than a Sunday roast we chose a fish dish and lamb shank. My lamb shank was exceptionally good, husband found the fish a little bland, and also his ice cream was nice, but nothing too special. Conversly I thought my meal was excellent altogether, and the pub feels nice and clean without sacrificing its character.

Met clients here for a business dinner. Started off with a pint by a roaring log fire then moved into the restaurant for the meal. BarExcellent range of drinks and quick service. Offered menus to browse while drinking. FoodTop quality. I had salmon as an appetizer followed by pork belly. Absolutely spot on!The burgers looked amazing also. My clients had steak and that too was well received. ServiceQuick, efficient and polite. Perfect. What a pleasant evening in a well run pub. Total contrast to experiences earlier this week in frognall!I will definitely return with clients and family.

It was a horrible day when I went to the Paper Mills, and we'd narrowly avoided getting soaked through to the skin just getting into the venue. When inside, it was fairly busy, but we were seated quickly and served efficiently, in a comfortable and warm venue! Food was good, although we did have rather a lot of it!

I been there three and both times and it excellent. The first time was my wedding meal in August and there were 16ish of us. The only bad meals were mine and the brides and we both had steaks. All the others were excellent. On our last visit this month there were approx 12 of us and all meals were outstanding. The service is also very good. I will be back very soon.

Being a Tuesday we expected there to be plenty of room but having arrived just after 7pm we took the last available table for the night. This is a popular pub/restaurant so reserving a table would seem essential if you are not to be disappointed. The bar staff also took our drinks order and immediately showed us to our table. The menu has a good range of dishes from basic fish and chips to some quite creative options. There was quite a wait before our order was taken as the staff were busy serving food and clearing tables. We chose the corn fed chicken and a sirloin steak cooked medium rare. While waiting for our food we were served some lovely wholemeal bread and an, individually wrapped, portion of butter. The two slices of bread seemed very meagre compared to the size of the butter portion and must create a lot of waste when only two people are dining. The food well cooked and very tasty; the chicken was particularly good and the potato rosti excellent. The steak was correctly cooked, tender and had a pleasant taste with a nice hint of smoke from the grill. The fat chips were hot, lovely and crisp, with soft moist centres. At the end of our meal there was a bit of a wait before the table was cleared and we were able to request the bill. Overall the food is very good and is an encouragement to return but the service needs to be a bit slicker, either there is a need for more people serving or better organisation and oversight.

Visited Saturday afternoon for a cold drink and scone. Wanted to sit outside as it was such a nice afternoon. The only free table was literally stacked with dirty plates, glasses, cups, cans. I went inside and although the entire place was empty EVERY table was also stacked with dirty crockery!! Half eaten meals, flies everywhere. One of the tables outside became vacant so I ordered my coke and scone and asked that the table be cleared.. A very reluctant lad came out and cleared the debris, didn’t bother to wipe the spilt salt, ketchup and general mess up. Another customer was loading dirty plates from her table onto another but still nobody bothered to clear up. My scone came out like molten rock,it had clearly been zapped too long in the microwave. When it had cooled down enough to hold I tried to cut the scone,it was rock hard. By this time the staff were out enjoying the chaos that was happening in the grounds of the cathedral and clearly weren’t interested in customers. Definitely won’t be returning, the whole place was dirty.
