Saw a sign for the deli en route through St Briavels and popped in to get some lunch. A great selection to choose from if a bit pricey. Highly recommend the picnic bag, for £5.50 we got a portion of cheese and crackers, some really nice olives, crisps, fruit and a locally made sausage roll that was SO GOOD. We will definitely be back.

Wandered in on a miserable afternoon in June's extention of winter. Met by the cheery proprietor who immediately invited us to try as much of his interesting display of cheeses, emphasising that there would be no obligation to buy! Had to try a few and came away with about £5 worth of a small variety. Big mistake: should have bought at least double the amount as I'm sitting here now, 160 miles away, with it all gone. Some truly tremendous, local, cheeses on offer. This shop has everything. Local crafts and pickles/jams on sale, tea, coffee and home-made cakes to enjoy at their indoor tables and toys for the rug-rats so you can get a bit of peace, if needed. I would really encourage anybody to enjoy the hospitality of these lovely people and spend a bit of time in this relaxing little place browsing the wares.

On our way home and looked at Trip Advisor for a place to break our journey. The best mackerel pate we've ever tasted and the duck and plum pate is probably the best pate ever. Also bought some wild boar sausages for the freezer - since hugely enjoyed. And this is such a beautiful spot - an old castle almost opposite is a Youth Hostel and some stunning views. The owners will make you up a picnic so just drop by and marvel at the views while you eat.

We came across this delightful shop after following signs to St Briavels on a day of exploring the Wye valley and the Forest of Dean. It isn't a restaurant but a super little village shop. We had a great welcome and a cup of tea. Really enjoyed chatting to the owner who is a fund of information on all things local. I wished I lived nearer to be a regular customer. Milk is available in glass bottles which is kept in the fridge with your personal name tag made by the owners wife. We had already had lunch so didn't take advantage of the picnic lunches to take away. We left with local bacon, cheese and eggs and a pot of plum chutney. All excellent quality. Do call in if you are in the area.

What a saviour this place is. After going to the lovely local pub which is run by a specialist team of business avoiders ie food served on alternate Thursdays every 2nd full moon etc we went in to the pantry. They prepared stunning picnics of the most beautiful products and made our day with the approach and letting us taste the different home made product. Fantastic in every way!

We stayed at St. Briavels YHA and visited the shop to buy some milk. We then decided to order a packed lunch for the following day's walk along the Offa's Dyke path. We can highly recommend the freshly made sandwiches. We also enquired about finding a local taxi firm and the owners (and another customer) went out of their way to help us- even offering us a lift! Definitely worth a visit (or two!)… Recommended to any hostellers doing self-catering.

A peloton of 8 cyclists arrived looking haggard and in need of coffee and cake and the friendly staff at the pantry didn't disappoint. They had the idea of providing us with cups, a couple of cafetiere and bags of delicious goodies then directed us to a local viewing spot just round the corner. Trusting us to bring back the empties (which we did, of course) they really made us feel welcome. And the cakes? Yummy. We'll be back, for sure.

St. Briavels is a very pretty village set in the Gloucestershire hills. I was on a break from a week walking the Offa's Dyke trail and came across The Pantry. Martin, the owner, made me the best coffee I'd had all week. His deli/cafe was lovely to sit in and relax. Martin gave me some great tips on the surrounding countryside and directed me to a most enjoyable walk back to my hotel. I would definitely recommend The Pantry for a very enjoyable stop-off.

This is a deli run by an exceptionally friendly, kind and helpful couple. We went to buy bread but they had run out of the fresh bread we wanted, so gave us a loaf which was defrosting - free of charge! The pate we bought was delicious, as was the fresh coffee. My husband left his glasses on the table and when we came back the shop had closed, but we were able to attract attention as the owner was still tidying up. He came out straight away, carrying the glasses, and told us he was just going to our camp site to bring them back to us. Sheer kindness!

Great tour of the mine. Very interesting and informative. The guide was really good at explaining and he is clearly very passionate about what he does.. You can visit the site for free and without booking, but if you want to go on the mine tour you need to book and pay online via the website. Just beware that the café closes much earlier than advertised and also that some of the information on the website is out of date, including the café menu.
