The food is immaculate. The staff are so lovely and welcoming and the scenery is lovely. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is out for a trip in Edinburgh. Also the music is fire, this is written by a kid BTW so that is a compliment, and my mum loved it too. Definitely recommend, give it six stars if I could.

We came here just by chance after our visit to Dean Village and were pleasantly surprised. In the upper part there is a small room with tables, but when you go downstairs you only see the actual café. The whole thing is in a basement, but it's so nicely decorated that you don't even notice it. The cappuccino was great and I ate what I consider to be the tastiest scons in Edinburgh. Class!

All good places have some bad reviews. This is the one for this restaurant. We got to the restaurant and the waitress with the short hair took one look at us and said there was a 40 min wait and gave us an annoyed look like we should leave. She looked extra annoyed that we decided to wait. Literally 5 minutes later, a table opened and we were sat by a different waitress. 10 minutes after that there were at least 3 open tables. The same short haired waitress took our order. 50 minutes later, the short haired waitress comes over and said that there had been a screw up and that our order had somehow been lost. She had to retake our order and literally had to write it down again. Except this time , even though at least a third of the menu is grilled chicken items, and their name is the painted rooster, they had no more chicken. We ended up with a Ruben and a burger. The only saving grace to what had up until this point been one of the worst experiences of our lives was the food was really good. The waitress with the longer hair who originally sat us did apologize and she took 10% off the bill. As my wife is Asian and I look Irish, maybe she was prejudice. It certainly appeared so, but I can only speculate why she treated us so horribly.

It is situated close to Dean Village and St Mary's Cathedral. The place is small but very pleasant, you have to go down some stairs to access the room, where we were served very quickly. The staff is very attentive and friendly and explained the dishes and the different options on the menu to us. We ordered a No 5 in Toast and some Pierogi (typical Polish dish) and it was very good.

The prices make this place not worth it at all. The food is good, but way too expensive. The craziest thing I saw on their menu was two slices of toast for £3.5. If you go here, expect to spend minimum £20 per person for a decent meal that won’t leave you hungry after. The atmosphere is also meh, it’s in a basement and feels claustrophobic especially when the place is packed.

Ordered a soup which was served with one slice of bread- mine had been one closer to the end of the loaf so was closer to half a slice of bread so it might have been nice to get two smaller bits. In saying that the chicken noodle soup was just what I needed, and a decent bowlful, also points for having some great polish food options on offer too ! Coming from a local I think there are other cafes/deli’s in the area that I’d recommend over The Painted Rooster despite its overall high reviews, due to the general price point of the menu (£11 for cheese on toast) and claustrophobic basement seating which wasn’t particularly warm. It has the culinary charm of a small village cafe with good simple food but beware of the big city bill !! Also noted that the menu inside the front door didn’t seem to have prices on it -slightly misleading.

We were about to visit the nearby Make Believe and had to feed our babies somewhere, as unfortunately the other place doesn’t allow bringing baby food in. Thank you very much to the lovely staff at the Painted Rooster who provided us with two high chairs, took our order at the table and were very understanding with some baby food ending up underneath the table 🙈 We only had some drinks as unfortunately there weren’t many cakes that would be both gluten and dairy free but we would love to come again and try more dishes properly! Matcha latte with oat milk was decent.

We stopped in for a late breakfast, and I really appreciated the choose-your-own-breakfast option. Usually there are a few things I'm excited about, and a few things I'm indifferent about, but this was a chance to get only the exciting bits! When it came out, the presentation was definitely a step up from a lot of similar places we've tried, which was a fun surprise. The food was good, and the service was sparse but friendly. My only negative point was the windowless basement location, since it happened to be a beautiful day outside. There were a few people sitting outside when we arrived, so we probably could have asked about that if it mattered more.

Cozy Polish restaurant which serve cheese sandwiches, eggs, burgers and pierogi (dumplings). Main area in the basement, outdoor seating available. Poached eggs and a grill cheese toast were good, but two poached eggs on a toasted bread with nothing else for 9,5 pounds seemed pricey. Big meals like pierogi and bacon sandwiches around 15 pounds. There is breakfast menu, and lunch starts at noon - then you can order everything - breakfast, burgers, etc. They serve alcohol, too.

Quaint farmhouse style with roosters everywhere. After walking down an old staircase you arrive in this low ceiling culinary beauty. I ordered the smaller salmon and avocado toast. I don’t remember the name of the item, but it was on the bottom right of the menu. An absolutely fantastic meal at the right portion size before I explore Edinburgh. The avocado was ripe and creamy, salmon fresh and smooth, and a perfect poached egg. The horseradish sauce and pickled red onions added a little zing that brightened up the dish. And the service - spectacular! Just the right amount of attention and always happy. Thanks for a great experience!
