Got to say, ignore Vikrants review, we were staying at the Kimpton and decided to head over to the painted rooster on a whim for breakfast. The staff were bloody brilliant, turned up..no bs from the lady that told us a table for two would be available in 5-10 mins. Ok so a table of 4 turned up and because they had one of those free they went ahead of us in the queue...but I understand that in these times you allocate tables based on numbers rather than people just wanting breakfast. Once seated, staff were really attentive the Haggis Benedict was absolutely bloody amazing! As was the Scottish breakfast...great Lorne sausage! Also loved that the staff remembered another table that had visited previously based on the coffee order! This place is brilliant and we'll be definitely back once we return to Edinburgh!

Amazing Breakfast & Exceptional Hospitality! The Painted Rooster was a fantastic find! The breakfast was absolutely delicious, and the staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. We visited with our baby and dog, and they went above and beyond—offering water and even some ham for our pup. Such a thoughtful touch! The food is really good and stands out compared to a lot of other places. This said, there were no prices on the menu upstairs and two breakfast rolls to go turned out to be £17 which I think is super unreasonable. More than twice as expensive as other good cafes within the same area. Looks like somehow even higher than their Deliveroo prices for the same items?? It was dissappointing, epecially as the prices aren't transparent. Used to go quite often when they'd just opened but won't go back after this experience

Such a shame as food was good, nice variety on menu. However annoyed with myself as I was asked would I mind if a 10% service charge was added to the bill before I was given the bill. I would always leave a tip however on this occasion I was standing by the till waiting to pay, and another couple had arrived waiting to be seated however the two service staff were chatting just general chit chat leaving us all standing waiting. Quite rightly those waiting to be seated gave up and went off but I was daft enough to agree to the service being added. Shocking customer service. We won’t go back despite the breakfast being tasty

Went there for Breakfast on a Sunday morning on our weekend break to Edinburgh. This place came up on my Google search as close by with good reviews. It is located in the basement and the interiors are warm and cosy. But it’s very congested and the tables are extremely close with hardly any room in between. The food is average for the price. The taste was not bad. There are vegetarian and vegan options. We were not very impressed with the service. It seemed very rushed and impersonal. They kept rushing us from with clearing the table and bringing the bill when we didn’t even finish our food let alone ask for the bill. Maybe this was just our experience but don’t think will be too excited about going here again.

All good places have some bad reviews. This is the one for this restaurant. We got to the restaurant and the waitress with the short hair took one look at us and said there was a 40 min wait and gave us an annoyed look like we should leave. She looked extra annoyed that we decided to wait. Literally 5 minutes later, a table opened and we were sat by a different waitress. 10 minutes after that there were at least 3 open tables. The same short haired waitress took our order. 50 minutes later, the short haired waitress comes over and said that there had been a screw up and that our order had somehow been lost. She had to retake our order and literally had to write it down again. Except this time , even though at least a third of the menu is grilled chicken items, and their name is the painted rooster, they had no more chicken. We ended up with a Ruben and a burger. The only saving grace to what had up until this point been one of the worst experiences of our lives was the food was really good. The waitress with the longer hair who originally sat us did apologize and she took 10% off the bill. As my wife is Asian and I look Irish, maybe she was prejudice. It certainly appeared so, but I can only speculate why she treated us so horribly.

The prices make this place not worth it at all. The food is good, but way too expensive. The craziest thing I saw on their menu was two slices of toast for £3.5. Ordered a soup which was served with one slice of bread- mine had been one closer to the end of the loaf so was closer to half a slice of bread so it might have been nice to get two smaller bits. In saying that the chicken noodle soup was just what I needed, and a decent bowlful, also points for having some great polish food options on offer too ! Coming from a local I think there are other cafes/deli’s in the area that I’d recommend over The Painted Rooster despite its overall high reviews, due to the general price point of the menu (£11 for cheese on toast) and claustrophobic basement seating which wasn’t particularly warm. It has the culinary charm of a small village cafe with good simple food but beware of the big city bill !! Also noted that the menu inside the front door didn’t seem to have prices on it -slightly misleading.

Usually there are a few things I'm excited about, and a few things I'm indifferent about, but this was a chance to get only the exciting bits! When it came out, the presentation was definitely a step up from a lot of similar places we've tried, which was a fun surprise. The food was good, and the service was sparse but friendly. My only negative point was the windowless basement location, since it happened to be a beautiful day outside. On a cold February morning the place only had front door heater on, which was not doing anything to warm up the room that had 4 big single plane windows. Food is too expensive, Full English for £15 and £5 for coffee. All the seating is hard wood or cold steal. Go to The Clock Cafe down the road for a cheaper, warmer and comfortable experience. Also they had their council food bin right next to the front door! Why!

Had an excellent lunch at Holy Cow. Really nice cosy little cafe with great vegan food. Ruben sandwich was awesome

Good atmosphere and reasonable prices but we had a very poor experience. Ordered two coffees which then took around 10-15 minutes to arrive (they weren’t that busy) then within a couple of minutes of getting them another member of staff came round to tell us that they were closing in 10 minutes. They then proceeded to clear up around us making it very clear they wanted rid. Not impressed. If you do decide to visit, suggest you check how long they will give you to drink/eat. If we hadn’t have paid up front would have walked out.

Came to Detour Espresso because my friend recommended it. I was very happy with the flat white there, contrary to some reviews I saw on Google: the coffee did not taste “burnt”, I thought it had a lovely roasted flavour to it, without the bitter aftertaste that is so often an issue; the texture was brilliant, again, no funny aftertaste; also, the size was very normal for a flat white (after reading some reviews I expected it to be a lot smaller). I also got their soup, which if I remember correctly was carrot and coriander, with sourdough bread. I thought the price was good - £4. The sourdough was toasted which was lovely. The soup was also delicious. Next time I’m in Edinburgh I’ll definitely pop in again! PS: if you want fresh pastries, consider coming earlier in the day, because when I came (2 hours before they close or so) they didn’t have much out.
