Excellent pub. All the food was wonderful, the home made chips the best I’ve had for years. The landlord was just as a landlord should be, welcoming and friendly. The pub had a great atmosphere and had been sensitively renovated. Would definitely recommend.

Excellent food; stunning setting; the warmest of welcomes; and friendly and courteous service from everyone . Oh, and did I mention the attractive choice of beers, wines etc. Rural pubs, like this one deserve to be supported. Pleased to be able to visit several times a year for a special afternoon out in Derbyshire. Wish I lived closer. A big “Thank you “ to all concerned for making us so welcome. Keep up the excellent standards. Gareth Evans, Stockport

We stay in Biggin regularly and this place has been on our radar for ages, but we’ve always managed to get lost walking to it. Today was v wet so we drove. It’s a lovely, traditional Derbyshire pub with an impressive menu. We are veggies so are sometimes limited, but not a the Packhorse. The food was lovely and had a great pint of Tetley with it. We had our dog with us. He’s a Pointer and only two. We’ve worked hard to train him so we can enjoy a pub trip, but unfortunately the other mutt owners hadn’t. I was super proud that Dylan didn’t respond, but left me feeling grumpy as with irresponsible owners like that, there will soon be no mutt friendly pubs left😡

What a lovely pub! Me and my boyfriend went on Sunday 5th May 2024 and we had such a lovely meal. All staff were a credit to the pub too as we were made to feel comfortable as soon as we walked in. We each had a burger with onion rings, home cooked chips and homemade coleslaw which were out of this world. It was all very tasty and very reasonably priced. When we are back in the area, we will definitely be returning! Thanks again!

This was our only 5 star pub review from our holiday in the Peak District. We had dinner for a family of four and it was great. What really made this pub standout was the welcome from the landlord and staff. Super welcoming and friendly. Despite all the challenges of running a pub during COVID they were all really accommodating. The food was good quality pub food, great real ales and a really lively and friendly atmosphere. I enjoy trying different real ales and it was great to see a range of styles and strengths of ale. Including a very nice stout and I don’t normally drink stout. I think because the landlord and staff were so friendly this just raised the whole feeling in the pub. Customers were chatty and friendly and we all wanted to enjoy the atmosphere. Highly recommend this pub.

Such a lovely welcoming little pub, at the end of the lane from our campsite. Called in yesterday after a walk just for drinks but returned this evening for food after seeing what was being brought out of the kitchen.Staff are so friendly, fantastic attentive service. Such a friendly place, a mix of locals and holidaymakers but all so friendly and chatty. Food was top notch, hot, huge portions and probably one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. The hubbies fish snd chips were a big hit too. Would highly recommend to anyone in the area and will definitely return next time we stay down here

Planned a visit here today whilst walking in the area and reading positive reviews. The pub is in a great location with wonderful walks and views around. Sat in the beer garden and enjoyed a well deserved beer. Ordered what was suggested as a lighter meal but was quite a big portion. I had a fish Goujon bap with chips and my wife ordered the smaller version of the burger. Service was good and we weren’t waiting too long. The sandwiches were both very nice but the chips were amazing, real proper home cooked. Had a portion of onion rings too which were very nice. Overall a great value meal, lovely setting and great service. Dog Friendly too. Would recommend to anyone planning a visit.

What a gem, surrounded by wonderful countryside in the heart of the Peak District. The owner is passionate about local real ales and it shows. We were offered a great range matched to our different tastes. The food is excellent too - all homemade and with plenty of vegetarian options catering for everyone. The pies are really yummy. After being let down by another pub in the next village over for food and drinks we decided to walk to the pack horse Inn. Getting served as easy. When I asked about food the owner did say they were fully booked, but would see what he could do. So we had drinks outside with our dog. After half an hour we were given the green light. The food was really lovely, we both had pie of the day (my husband having beef and myself pork) the pies were homemade! To top it all off our dog was welcome also. Really highly recommend this Inn, as they really helped us out after what we thought was to be a night of going hungry. Thank you all for your lovely hospitality.

The pub garden is behind the pub on a slope above the Dove valley. A pint of their excellent beer in the garden compliments a peak district cycle ride perfectly. The pub was closed when we arrived and the staff were very busy preparing for the post-lockdown evening rush. First visit to a pub since lockdown and not at all disappointed. Everything about the welcome, the location, the service, the drinks and the food was quality. Having booked ahead we were seated in newly installed outdoor summer houses with views over the gardens, the hamlet and across the valley. Service was very good and the pies were real quality, homemade pastry (and not just a topping) and stuffed full with a portion of chips and peas and gravy in a jug on the side. Beers were local and good quality. The host was very amenable and is making this a go to location. Cannot fault it at all and a return will be on the cards, hopefully sometime soon.

I have been to this pub once before, a couple of years ago, in the depths of winter. It was lovely then. It was a prototypical country pub, warm and cozy, with quality food, but not so special that it would prompt me to write a review. Now, a couple of years later, I have visited again, after a stiff walk in the countryside, and have been thoroughly pleased. The beer garden, which I had never seen before, and which you really would not notice from the road, is simply stunning, and is likely the best in Derbyshire. It sits behind the pub, is quite expansive, is exposed to the afternoon sun, and has gorgeous views of the hills and countryside. The cask ale was well kept, tasty, and the perfect cellar temperature. They had four of them on, which is really remarkable for a country pub in the post covid world. And the food was just superb. The offer was limited, but what there was was first-class. Gordon Ramsey would struggle to find anything to complain about. I had the white bait as a starter; the fish was slightly larger than average, cooked perfectly, and served with a nice salad and a sauce to complement. My main was the rabbit pie, which was of a quality I've never experienced. I've long wanted to enjoy rabbit, and have bought rabbits from the butcher on several occasions, and have always ended up disappointed. I think this has been as a consequence firstly of not knowing how long to cook it for, and secondly, because I've only ever been able to source it frozen. This pie was amazing. The rabbit was succulent, and the gravy sweet. I think it had to be fresh (and cooked perfectly). There is no other way to explain its perfection. There was an ever so slight gaminess to it which was pleasurable, and of the kind you would expect from rabbit, but was not overpowering (by contrast with my home-spun versions, which were tought and too gamey). It was a first-rate gastro-pub offer. No country pub in soccer-country cheshire has ever served me anything comparable. The service, I must say, was a bit iffy; it's not clear that all their staff have got used to all the new protocols, and service could be slow as a consequence. I would encourage all who read this, however, to drop what they are doing, get to this beer garden, have a bit of patience, and enjoy this most excellent pub beer garden.

A long walk from Buxton over Chrome Hill with my mate and my two Yorkshire terriers. The beer garden is excellent. Covid proof. Weather proof (pods erected to hold groups of up to six). Great views. Beer plentiful and well kept. But the star was the pie! Rabbit in cider and bacon. None of this casserole with a pastry lid just before leaving the kitchen nonsense. This was a proper home made individual pie (cut out pastry rabbit on top to tell you). Yumsk. Go for a massive walk, end up there, drink, eat and socialise responsibly and take the bus back to Buxton that stops outside the pub. This is what a long walk deserves.

We are regular visitors to the Pack Horse, although the menu has been shortened the choice we made was really nice, I was surprised to see a negative comment regarding COVID compliance as we have been constantly reminded about steps they have taken to ensure safety for their customers, as locals to the pub, we have noticed the huge increase in volume of customers visiting, and considering this increase the owners have done an amazing job, it’s a shame that visitors from outside the area have made these negative comments when we always have a lovely time at the Pack Horse, and have felt safe throughout even considering the fact that so many tourists have been in the area since lockdown. Keep the good work up guys, we love it !

This pub would have got a better review during non-Covid times. The food was tasty and the staff friendly, but I'm afraid we did not feel fully safe from Coronavirus. The main problem was the behaviour of locals drinking in the pub, coming in and out to the bar with no social distancing among themselves. It did not feel that they were taking the virus rules seriously. One local came in, stood a couple of feet from our table and had a coughing fit, without even an apology afterwards. The pub has put in place a number of covid measures, but in our opinion they were too permissive with the locals, allowing them too much leeway and not enforcing social distancing enough. It is difficult when dealing with pub regulars, I'm sure.As I say, the pub was nice, food was good and staff friendly. At any other time this would have been a four-star review. If you are reading this in less virus-infested times, do consider the Pack Horse as a venue for a nice evening meal.

A return visit to the Packhorse and again we were not disappointed. A warm welcome from the landlord, a good selection of ales which is what you expect from a country pub but do not always get, and excellent food. Knowing the qaulity of the pies our group of 5 opten for the pie of the day. Hot tasty and just what you expect from a real pie. Well done. (The Pack Horse was recommended to us by friends who had enjoyed drinks here). We were first to arrive for lunch, not even sure if the pub was open. We received a very friendly welcome and were made to feel instantly at ease. We were informed that the Pie of the Day was still in the oven, which made us even more keen to order it. The 20 minute wait was well worth it as the pie was utterly delicious. We also ordered fish and chips which was beautifully cooked as was the burger. Despite eating everything, we could not resist ordering puddings - again they were homemade and delicious! The beer (Brainstorm) was excellent. We don't live too far away, so will definitely be returning.

Pros: Good location - quiet, picturesque, nice beer garden. Interior is also old and has a cosy vibe. Friendly staff. Cons: Food is VERY average. Tasty enough to be edible still, but not the amazing pub grub you want from a place like this. For example the burger is just 2 plain patties with 1 slice of cheese - about as basic as you could get. Overall probably a great place to grab a beer, but wouldn’t come again for the food.

You know a good pub when it feels like a home away from home; a place to sit, drink and chat comfortably, that's the Packhorse, a traditional English pub. The new owners are doing really well. This pub had become a bit of a local institution with 4 deliciously interesting new guest ales every week or so. Happily, the baton has been well passed on from old to new owners, same great ales, and the character and ambiance has been well maintained, in fact it might just be improving. Thank you!! We had lunch here as part of a walk from where we were staying at Hurdlow. We received a great welcome and really enjoyed the home-cookef food and range of real ales. Perfect country pub experience, thoroughly recommend.

Very welcoming landlord to this pub at the bottom of a 20% descent. The real ales were well described and local advice taken on routes out of the village. Somewhat off the beaten track but definitely you’ll not be disappointed. Large car park, garden and restaurant areas. Recommended

Having cycled past here a few weeks before, the place looked very tempting so had to give the inn try, we decided to go out for Sunday ride out and have lunch, stopped at the Packhorse Inn, only wanted something light, and my partner had a beef dinner with vegetables only, excellent portions, beautiful chips with my cheese and onion panini. Landlord and landlady very welcoming, make you feel at home, nothing to much trouble, also have some local ales on, will definitely visit for another sample. Place was very busy also, which is an excellent sign. Thanks very much.

When we arrived with our children the staff obviously did not want us to stay. They stood around chatting without serving us and then put a reserved sign on the table we went and sat at. They said they had no room but then decided that we could squeeze around a small table even though they could have quite easily pushed to two together to accommodate us. They did not want our custom even though we were locals. They won’t be seeing us again.

Visited here with friends, booked a table and informed them when booking we would have two dogs with us, the table was brilliantly located in a corner, lovely and big with lots of room for the dogs.

We were so pleased to find the Packhorse Inn whilst walking a few years ago, and generally break our Hartington/Sheen Hill walk here. It looks great from the outside, and going in does not disappoint. Friendly service, and a decent menu. We'll be back.

Out for a drive in the wonderful Peak District, the sun was shining, warm weather, no coats and everyone smiling and happy. Where to go for a good Saturday lunchtime meal and drink? The Packhorse Inn at Crowdecote of course! A good traditional pub that offers a warm welcome, great beers and excellent food. We had starters and mains but were too full to manage a dessert on this occasion. Landlords very helpful and knowledgeable. This pub has very good facilities for those with mobility impairment or needing wheelchair accessible access to both inside the main bar and the restaurant area, as well as accessible toilet facilities. Staff offer assistance to everyone requiring help, whatever their needs. We are looking forward to our next visit.

a booked group, we visited on a wet weekday lunchtime and service was friendly with good ales and food. A plus or not depending on your point of view... zero mobile phone signals inside the pub and a weak wifi.....

We ate here twice during a week's holiday based nearby. The landlord could not have been more welcoming or helpful and his staff were great too. The pub has character, warmth and offers a proper welcome. The food was delicious and locally sourced/prepared. The home-made 'proper' pies are worth a visit on their own. Cannot offer too much praise - what an enjoyable experience.

We were staying in Longnor and were pointed toward the Pack Horse with a guarantee of a good meal in a cosy, friendly pub. That is always a worry. Would it live up to its billing? And the answer is YES! If I was going to describe my ideal Pub it would be The Pack Horse. Located in the Dove valley the Pub makes a very welcoming stop. The Pub has age and is warm and cosy. There was a good choice of beers and the landlord was happy to offer tasters. The menu was not the longest but each item was a tempter. Everything was home cooked and delicious. It was just a relaxed and enjoyable evening, a fine place to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

We spent the day walking and came to the Pack Horse Inn for a late lunch. The staff were very polite and didn't mind that we were slightly late for our booked time.

We were staying close by and booked for lunch here and what a delicious lunch it was. We both had the chicken croquettes to start, scrumptious! For main course I enjoyed the excellent rack of lamb whilst my wife chose the duck dish which she loved too. The food is top notch and we will definitely be back. The service was good and all the staff were really friendly. It’s worth booking so you’re not disappointed as the area is a haven for walkers, cyclists and day trippers.

This glorious old beamed pub has an unsurpassed setting. The landlord made us feel very welcome. The food was truly excellent - try the homemade pie! The ladies loo was spotless. A lovely place to visit before doing a circular walk to Pilsbury Castle.

After being turned away by the pub in nearby Longnor after we had booked a meal for 4, the evening was saved by this delightful pub that couldn’t be more inviting - and importantly the food - fish pie, veggie tart and roast lamb in our case - was excellent with most generous portions. Recommended!
