A disaster to say the least, arrived and told to pick any table, staff seem uninterested. It was quite a cold day and the place was cold and draughty. Food was underwhelming my wife had the fish and chips at £24 fish small with mediocre batter, mushy peas were crushed frozen peas. I had the plaice which was far from fresh and lukewarm as were the vegetables. None of the staff ask how the meal was. I ordered a cheese board was charged £18 for two types of cheese and 7 thin small crackers and a sliver of butter. I have had better fish and chips in our local chippy. Cost for a lousy lunch £111, including a £12 service charge. Also there were 3 dogs in the restaurant which is small and one kept barking. Will not be going again.

I’ve waited 6 weeks to write this review. It’s considered because I know Hospitality has been difficult since Covid. We went to this restaurant to celebrate our 30th anniversary - my partner had chosen it over other restaurants near us in Dorset. It was a fabulous stormy day with great views from the dining room. We were welcomed and given a perfect table - ‘sticky’ - but never mind it’s a big day! Had a lovely glass of English sparkling and then our starters arrived. Mine had congealed food on it, clearly left over from a previous service. The server did a double take too but decided to ignore it…and so did I. (I know that, at this point I should have said something but I just didn’t want to ruin our meal. And, by the way, I don’t think it should be up to the customer to complain, the staff should apologise and replace immediately.) We ordered another glass of wine which just didn’t turn up until we asked again at least 20 mins later. Small things are now accumulating... This is how an expensive meal goes from poor to pitiful. Our mains came (we didn’t mind that it was very slow - it was a Sunday and we were there to enjoy the moment). The additional vegetables were just rock hard. My fish had some unrecognisable ‘innards’ - not roe. We had fully intended to stay for pudding, coffee, dessert wine etc etc but we just looked at each other (30 years of dining out at great restaurants together) and decided to call it a day. We were so deflated… So disappointing. To the restaurant: please take notice of our comments. We want lovely restaurants to go to in Dorset - think about what you’re being told in good faith and up your game.

We have been following Mark Hix's progress for some time and thought we would visit his restaurant in Lyme Regis to support his recovery. We were so disappointed. Although we booked several weeks before it was as though we were not expected when we arrived. On a Thursday night in busy Lyme Regis there were only 3 tables occupied when we left. The menu was very limited indeed. Even with the vegetarian option, the only starter my husband could have was beetroot salad. I had cuttlefish croquets. He had haddock and chips and I had brill for mains. Everything was mediocre. We had just seen loads of crabs and lobsters been landed at Illfracombe the day before, so please don't say the seafood wasn't available. My husband complained ( I cannot remember the last time this happened-beware the quiet man) and the Manager gave us a 10% discount - itemised as a friends and family discount. We wish you well Mark but not at our expense again.

The food was fantastic, the service excellent and the views to die for ! They catered for my wifes gluten allergy, and She could choose just about anything on the menu. This is rare in Devon ! The chocolate mouse was exceptional and the portion was huge. This is a restaurant for foodies who love fresh fish and seasonal local produce.

We initially had a good impression when we arrived to warm welcome. We ordered our drinks and then food from the menu. The starter arrived promptly and my scallops were excellent though my wife's mushroom starter was a bit oily. We both had a main course of sole which was very oily snd did cause some concern to my wife who isn't keen on oily food. We were told it was oil seed rape that had been put on. We went ahead and subsequently my wife had to go and be sick much to her surprise as she had not expected that reaction. We informed the restaurant who said we should have informed them to her "allergy"! It is not an allergy but a reaction to far too much oil seed rape covering the fish, an ingredient that was not shown on the menu at all. On presentation of the bill (a lot but expected) I was somewhat annoyed to find we had been charged £2 for a jug (not bottled) of water which added injury. In retrospect we should have sent the sole back. We left not happy and sadly are unlikely to return as we had a lovely meal there a few years ago. I recommend anyone going to query exactly how it was prepared as the menu was not an acute guide in our case. Our waitress was good though.

The view outshines the food I'm afraid. Very poor choice of 3 mains, brill, plaice or £65 fish sharing plate. Brill was sold out so we had plaice. Was nicely cooked but as with starter had to ask for lemon!! Service also very slow. I would not go back. Other diners not happy either the £65 sharing plate was ridiculously mean. So overpriced, mean portions and slow service with a lovely view.

What a fantastic evening the food (especially the scallops) were to die for - yes it’s expensive but it was worth it. Our waitress/maitre d had a difficult customer who was sat next to us and she handled it magnificently. Phoebe our waitress was wonderful and Mark Hix said hello - what more could anyone ask for!!! Impossible to get to if you don't book a taxi a few days before. Located on a hillside, no parking within 200m. None of these accessibility constraints are mentioned either on OpenTable or the restaurant's website. What is clear is that there is a £40 charge to cancel the reservation once I had found out how inaccessible the restaurant was. An unhappy diner who needs to walk with a cane.

While on holiday in Lyme Regis we went to The Oyster and Fish House for our wedding Anniversary meal. Having booked in advance after seeing the restaurant recommended in The Times we were expecting a top class experience. However the food was good but the service left a lot to be desired. We arrived slightly early and were shown to a table which was ok but there were tables with a better view, so we asked to move. Every time during the meal we asked a question the waitress said she would have to ask, which proved very frustrating. The waitress who collected our main course plates managed to spill the contents over the table, floor, my clothes and glass case. She then proceeded to try and mop it up with our linen serviette and a quick ‘sorry’. There was no offer of a goodwill gesture. We removed the service charge and spoke to the supervisor but we just had another sorry. The food was nice but the service spoilt a special occasion. I would expect the staff to be better trained in a restaurant of this quality. What a shame!

A terrible letdown, we should have taken note of other reviews. The menu was very small: Wishy-washy tasteless bisque, overcooked grilled fish for 2 served on a cold platter + cold plates. An insult to and ruination of the brill, silver mullet and bass, and the fish skin tasted unpleasant from the artificial grill. The Portuguese Tonnix white wine was excellent. The restaurant does not live up to being in the Michelin Guide. The Hive was also very disappointing.

Sticky tables, and uninformed, badly trained staff seemed to be the consequence of a maitre’d who didn’t know the basics. We waited a long time for service, were never checked back on and not offered another drink, meanwhile other guests left unattended at the door, all this should not have happened on a quiet night. While we enjoyed the sole from the mixed grilled fish, the rest of the food was let down by inaccurate cooking, bland sauces and stale bread. I would expect this level of cooking from a basic cafe, but this restaurant definitely devalues the Hix brand, as evidenced here by many recent bad reviews. More fool me for not checking!

Good but there was room for improvement baring in mind it isn't cheap! Staff were charming but a bit all over the place - felt like no one was overseeing things? Food was great really delicious fresh fish and lovely fresh green vegetables. The Glassware had a real budget feel to it which was a shame given that the drinks were expensive and wines high end - the beer was served in a half pint old fashioned "jug" and my wife's £13 cocktail in a cheap thick glass tumbler the wine glasses also felt decidedly "budget" too which the wine definitely isn't and the table water was served in a bizarre old jug that looked like it had been found in a charity shop. The desert was devine - credit crunch ice cream with warm chocolate sauce - highly recommend this! Overall a great meal and would def recommend however a few easy tweaks could make a big difference imo

We had a fantastic meal here while on holiday in Lyme Regis. We’d visited a few years ago and loved it but this meal was even better. We had some incredible oysters to start, plus the cockle popcorn, which is a must eat! We then had the shellfish soup and chalk stream trout, which were amazing. For our main course, we had the platter of grilled fish to share, which came with both hollandaise and green sauces. Some of the best fish both of us have ever eaten! Very surprised by the recent negative reviews, as our experience couldn’t have been any better!

Taken here by our friends to celebrate our 40th anniversary. Wow well worth it! Beautiful fish, beautifully cooked and served. Nice atmosphere. There was a family behind us with a baby and they were made welcome and there was thought about where baby could sit and so on. I enjoyed the Rhuby Mess pudding (variation on an Eton Mess) and all the other puds were good too. Not a cheap place but definitely worth the money.

We've been great fans of Chef Hix and all his doings over the years, and I'm glad to report that Mark and his brigade are on top form at his Lyme Regis mothership. We enjoyed seasonal asparagus and scrumpy-battered oysters followed by a fillet of the much-undervalued pollock and a scrummy prawn burger. A treacle tart was rightly not resisted and was delicious.

The Oyster House hosted our daughter’s reception at the end of April. From the minute we entered the restaurant and saw how beautifully and tastefully the staff had set out our wedding decorations we knew this was going to be an amazing event - and it surpassed expectations. The quality of the food- canapés and main meal was outstanding; the subtle attentiveness of staff was so appreciated - they made the whole experience into a magical gastronomic delight. Everybody commented how wonderful the chefs, waiting staff and of course the superb location was. Thank you so much to everyone. 🤩

Our waitress with the stars on her fingernails is a great asset to the place. Spontaneous and good-humoured, she created a good atmosphere and we came to chat with other guests. The food was really good but don’t come here if you want big portions or a bargain. Fresh fish (they would have to try hard to serve it otherwise, given the proximity to the harbour), well cooked. The hollandaise sauce was not as good as ours, though. And as a Belgian I thought that the chocolate mousse was too pricey for its taste. We had a good evening but one time is enough.

There were 12 of us, which is always a challenge for a restaurant but we gave 2 months notice. Bad impression on entry with a a greeter whose whole body language was negative - offering us menu cards which were already on the table which the maitre d' loudly reminded her of. The restaurant was stifling hot and we had to ask for windows to be opened - weird? Service was shambolic 90 minutes to get the first course - 2 1/2 hours to have 2 courses - we gave up after that. The Maitre d' looked harassed although well meaning, the greeter became unacceptably rude while the situation was saved by a young man who would be a credit to any restaurant. The food - well many of us had the Frito Misto which turned out to comprise one type of fish - after a little back and forth the maitre d' accepted that what was served wasn't as described and did not charge us - generally the cooking was just so so (strangely tasteless scallops for example) although the whole bream was as one would expect in a Mark Hix restaurant - the only thing sadly. Something currently just isn't right with this restaurant given its proud pedigree.

We, like many others I suspect, were persuaded to book following the restaurant featuring on Rick Steins latest TV series, and were not disappointed! The first really spring like day of 2024 made for wonderful panoramic views from this lovely little place perched on the cliff side in Lyme. The oysters were plump, sweet and delicious, I had the crispy mackerel starter (heavenly!), my boyfriend the smoked trout - he was in raptures. Mains were plaice for him, scallops for me - again both perfectly cooked and divine. We really shouldn't have had a dessert but the crunch ice cream with hot chocolate sauce was calling to us so we indulged, and boy was it lovely! Will definitely visit again, you need to book as the restaurant is small making for an intimate and indulgent experience- thank you also to the wonderful staff!

We visited in March with six friends and took the set lunch menu. The starters were very disappointing and not worthy of inclusion. The main was an improvement but not outstanding. The restaurant is clearly trading on its chefs reputation but the food was very ordinary. Service was generally good although the maitre”d was not very welcoming. Having read over the years about Mark Hix various enterprises we weren’t sure what to expect of the Oyster & Fish House. What we did not expect was one of the most delightful and enjoyable meals we have had for a long time. Firstly we cannot praise the waiting staff enough. They were charming, friendly and helpful. Good service is an essential part of a good restaurant and this restaurant had it in spades!! The food was excellent. The simple grilled Brill was delicious as was the rest of the food. It’s a few years since we’ve been here, a place we’ve always loved. The food is still excellent overall - we loved the oysters, the fish, the sides, the desserts. In fact, the only niggles were that the white chocolate fondue/strawberries was totally underwhelming for...

The food is delicious at The Oyster & Fish House. Unfortunately, 3 out of the 6 choices of red wines were not available which slightly spoiled our evening there.

Fantastic fish! A delicious meal in a wonderful setting. Mixed fish sharing plate to be recommended and delightful buttery mash. Service was a little slow for 2 octogenarians!!

Informal atmosphere with wounderful views across Lyme Bay. Friendly well trained staff. We had 5 courses and each one perfectly cooked. Mark being the perfect host flirting around between tables. My fussy gluten intolerance well catered for! A great evening and a highly recommended sea...

Excellent food and great position overlooking the Cobb, we even met with Mark Hix who stopped and chatted with us all. They looked a little understaffed. We arrived 25 mins early not expecting to be seated, but asked if we could buy a drink and...

Had a great lunch overlooking the Cobb. Cockle popcorn and deep fried oysters were as good as ever. Sea Bass was well cooked for main. Still the best view in Lyme Regis for lunch.

Popped in with the dogs for a quick early supper. Mark and the team continue to offer a great fish menu in relaxed surroundings. Fabulous.

I was nearly put off visiting because of the mixed reviews found here. Thankfully I went with gut instinct otherwise our table of four would have missed out on a fantastic lunchtime dining experience. I loved the food and didn’t find it too simple as...

Terrible service. 5 of us went for drinks. We were shown to a table and given drinks menus. After 15-20 minutes we had not been served, no sign of anyone taking our order so had to leave a go elsewhere.

I like the drinks from the bar in the entertainment bit of the building but the chips felt like they just thrown some crisps in the deep fryer but I had food in the restaurant bit of the building and that was a gorgeous breakfast

Fantastic Pub !!! Great food, great people, and a really relaxed place to spend time. Welcoming, and the staff are engaging with a good sense of humour. Exactly what Poundbury needs, please keep doing what you’re doing - great job ! Thanks (Review from a Poundbury Resident, recently moved here) 😁
