The Original Nash's Fish Restaurant in Leeds

Feeling peckish my friend decided he wanted fish & chips, we were on the Headrow so l thought of Nash's even though l've never eaten there. The reason for that is the business & alley approach looks so unwelcoming. And it did again...7 large green general waste dustbins right outside, rubbish everywhere. Now l know this is not the fault of Nash's but it's plain off-putting, they could screen it off for a small outlay. Secondly l said to my pal "lt's shut", everything about it led me to thinking that, even with an "open" flyer on the door, l was amazed the door opened when l pushed it. Oh oh, totally empty, no food in the fryers, really strange. The woman behind the counter was great, she explained that it was cooked fresh & wouldn't take long. 2 fish & chips were ordered and tbh l was not expecting much. I was wrong, the fish was really good and the chips fine & plentiful, mushy peas ok if a bit watery. The only negative was the tomato sauce, it was terrible, orange & cheap. Whilst we were eating 2 other customers arrived, so 4 in probably 40 minutes there. There is something wrong here, the food was good, the woman friendly & efficient but it is devoid of any atmosphere or decent furnishings, to me it looks like totally wasted potential. I'd probably give it another try, maybe l caught it on an unusually quiet day, but still, please make an effort on the approach & frontage to make it more welcoming, l'm sure it'd make huge difference.

Ordered meals for 5 people on deliveroo, waited over an hour and a half and only 1 meal was sent!!!! Now saying they can’t send out the missing food!!!!!! Absolute joke and Shocking service and will not be ordering from here again 🤬 DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE!!!!

Genuinely the worst sausage and chips I’ve ever ordered. Got it through deliveroo and felt sick to my stomach when I saw a squished spider in one of my chips. The curry sauce was also disgusting and had no taste. DO NOT waste your money on this food find somewhere else for chips ect.

Had their fish and chips last week and it was delivered brilliantly and everything was hot, crispy and fresh. Literally just had to throw today’s delivery in the bin because it was all cold, soggy and stale!! Genuinely tasted like 2 day old food - and I found a wirey hair on the chips. Wasted 15 pound on bin food. Not happy!

Strangest fish restaurant ever. Doesn't do tea they have no kettle. Doesn't do bread and butter. Tables for 4 or 7 no atmosphere. Wouldn't reccomend

The best fish and chips away from the coast. Fantastic fish and chips, great crispy batter. Service can be a little slow at times but it looks like they make up everything quite fresh. Also a little bit more expensive but worth it! Been up to the beer hall a couple of times and that’s been good too!

Won’t even lie I was fully expecting it not to be my cup of tea , didn’t think hipster ale bars and fish and chips mixed but this was potentially the best fish n chips I have ever had .. and I’ve had a lot ! Had a brilliant night, dropped in between bars - ended up staying for several drinks and decided upon food. The fish bites and chips were excellent, all the trimmings, and a great atmos.

Arrived at 8 o clock for fish and chips and was so disappointed to find that this restaurant was not the traditional fish and chip restaurant we had visited many times. There was loud music, very uncomfortable chairs and the table design was such that you didn’t know where to put your legs to get comfortable. When I pointed this out to the young man behind the bar his reply was “it’s cool”. My husband and I are in our sixties and perhaps this is not the place for us or the clientele they are now looking for. However we had two thirty year olds with us who also, like us, couldnt get out of there quick enough.

Nash ha estado en Chapel Allerton desde el principio de los tiempos y siempre fue encantador. Los últimos propietarios decidieron vender y seguir adelante, por lo que estuvo cerrado durante unos meses, por lo que quedé encantado al conducir a casa desde el trabajo, una tarde que vi si había vuelto a abrir las puertas.

Ojalá hubiera leído los comentarios antes de comprar pescado y patatas fritas esta noche. Ojalá pudiera dar cero estrellas también. Nash's tenía una reputación de excelente pescado y papas fritas, digo que sí, porque lo que teníamos esta noche era desagradable y no la calidad de la comida que esperaba.

I've never eaten upstairs, I always get takeaway. Fish are either cooked to order/ cooked while you wait OR even at quieter times, it won't have been sat there long. Just occasionally a tendency to cook the fish for a bit longer than I'd like.

Estoy muy triste de estar escribiendo esta crítica porque he estado yendo a Nashs durante años, pero este tema será mi última visita. No sé lo que pasó, pero ha ido en baja en términos de servicio y estándares en los últimos seis a siete meses. Cada vez que ingresas nunca tienen nada que vender, ha sido así durante siglos, esta noche no fue la excepción, no hubo salsa de curry, ni salchichas maltratadas, las personas fueron servidas al azar, así que es pura suerte cuando te sirven. Entiendo que se llena y las cosas se agotan, ¿pero en serio? ¿cada vez? . También me gustaría mencionar la aparente falta de dirección o supervisor en la tienda, cuando la mayoría del personal parece ser muchachos jóvenes y parecen tener problemas terribles cuando están ocupados. Esto es muy preocupante. Desafortunadamente, especulo que la falta de un supervisor / gerente en las instalaciones a menudo conduce a los bajos niveles de servicio al cliente que a menudo se reciben aquí y es una verdadera lástima.

Great fish and chips restaurant in heart of warm Chapel Allerton, came here with a friend sat upstairs in restaurant which was very homely and inviting, both had fish and chip suppers, food and service were excellent

We discovered when we went in here that the upstairs restaurant was no more and was being converted into an Indian bar But the downstairs takeaway is still functioning. The food here is so good that we decided to get our meal and eat in a small room adjoining the shop! An unusual dinner date but we like to be different.! So - we had fish and chips (excellent) twice, two mugs of tea, a dish of onion rings lying on a bed of lettuce and tomato served with mayonnaise. It tasted as good as it ever did upstairs and the cost - FOR TWO - was £10.50!!

It's with a heavy heart I write this review. The Fish and chips are excellent, probably the best I've ever tasted. The issue here is the service. Why are 4 people milling around chatting, when there are customers waiting to be served?

Este lugar tiene tan horrible servicio al cliente! He estado dos veces en el último mes y cada vez he caminado, me han dejado hacer cola para las edades sin ni siquiera una palabra que me dijo por el personal. Un cortés "hola, hay un par de minutos de espera" sería suficiente, pero simplemente mirar nervioso con ninguna organización. La semana pasada cuando fuimos, pedí el primero y me dijeron que no sería un 2 minutos de espera, mi compañero me ordenó su después y él al igual que yo, excepto por la salsa, y él recibió su inmediato? ! Tuve que esperar 15 minutos para ser finalmente mina preparada por que el tiempo, mi pareja había ido fría. De nuevo, no había ninguna disculpa o buen servicio al cliente. Un lugar realmente frustrante para ver qué pasa!

We go to nashs quite regular and food is always good and fresh. Lately have noticed speed issues here with service, you can see food is cooked so not the fryers fault it's the tortoises on the counter. One young lady is very difficult to understand and that doesn't help.So come on Mr Nash, s please sort this out because in terms of speed I could walk to another chippy, get home and eat it before I'm served.Aside from that food is very good and the bearded fryer is very pleasant and jovial.

I am very picky when it comes to fish and chips and my friends usually laugh at me when I shudder at the thought of trying a new fish and chip shop but I was not disappointed here!I am not a fan of greasy fish that has not been drained properly or stale tasting chips that have been in the heater for a while so I was pleasantly surprised at the fresh, crispy tasting fish and chips from this place (well with the 10 people that came after us and were queuing through the door, I don't think the food has time to sit and get stale!)I also liked that they had a small restaurant upstairs and the variety they had on the menu.Servers was nice and friendly and the portion sizes were more than enough for my hungry tummy!Highly recommended and they do cute kids meals too which was great for my friend's daughter.

Having moved to Leeds around 18 months ago I'd never been to a proper chippy and kind of wishing I still hadn't.I don't eat fish and chips too often. When I do, I'm usually by the seaside or back home in Lancashire. Maybe I got a bad night but (it was a Thursday evening afterall)... I arrived at around 7pm to find that they'd ran out of small fish but offered me regular for the same price after a little bit of a stand off. They had also ran out of curry sauce and the mushy peas were not a great replacement (quite dry). I could barely understand the girl and she wasn't very pleasant. She wrapped up the the fish and chips without put salt and vinegar on nor even offering and when I ask for it she look at me like I was an alien and expected me to do it myself...Poor service, ordinary fish and chips.

we usually order chips - fish n chips every few weeks here. the chips are lovely and so is the fish. avoid ordering the haggis. we waited over half and hour as it is made to order. the shop was busy and they forgot about us and our other order too...the lady who served us on that day was very slow and kept forgetting our other items we had paid for. it is a shame as my boyfriend likes haggis but its meant to be 'fast food' so we stick to just fish n chips now

This usto be really nice this shop and it's going down hill rapidly, go to this fish /shop at least once a week as it's our house holds favourite takeaway food,but the food can be hit and miss, one week a brilliant fish, grease free, following week, it's like raw, but I always go back cos it's my local one and they are clean and like to be loyal to my areas local shops . but other day I finished work early, wife out, I thought get some fish and chips. It closes at 2pm on a afternoon or did that day, I got there at 1.45, to be told basically to go away as all the had left was a few chips now at this time. So when I said we go back because of loyalty you would think works both ways, I mean there was still 15 mins to closing. There was nobody else in the shop, I don't think cooking another fish and few more chips would have put someone out much, well you would have thought anyway, on there last legs after that lol

We've been going to Nash's for about 8 or 9 years but I swear, with Trip Advisor as my witness, that last night was very last time I'm going. I've said this MANY times before, but this time I mean it. Every time I leave there I complain about how impossibly slow the service is. If it was funny, it would be a joke. It's almost as if they TRY to be awful at it. For a place (plaice?) that sells pretty much just TWO THINGS: Ya know, fish and chips, they sure are terrible at it!Last night there were two people (TWO) in front me me in the queue and it took 24 minutes for me to get 2 lots of fish and chips. Nearly half ab hour. "The people in front - they must have been ordering at least 20 lots of fsh and chips each, then?', I hear you cry!No... they both ordered two lots of fish and chips each. That's it. I could see the fish and I could see the chips, all cooked and ready to serve. I swear, at one point I actually considered leaping over the counter and serving it up myself. To top it all off when I eventually got home (45 minutes after leaving home, just round the corner) one of the fish was about half the size of the other one. It was nice - it always is - but I'm no longer forgiving your horrendously pathetic and slow service.Here's a tip for you that may come as a real surprise: STICK SOME CHIPS AND FISH IN SOME PAPER AND MOVE ON TO THE NEXT CUSTOMER AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. Goodbye, Nash's, it was nice knowing you.

One of the best places I have been for fish and chips. Went on a Saturday to the restaurant upstairs was brilliant service and staff are very friendly so came again on another Saturday night at the takeaway downstairs. Again cooked beautifully and staff are friendly but waited over 15 minutes and they seemed flustered at a small que. will come again but needs another member of staff to help downstairs when it's busier times.

Every Saturday lunchtime I pop down to Nash's for a couple of potions of fish and chips. Without fail i always have to wait 10 minutes whilst we wait for fish. Its like they are surprised that you have turned up wanting to buy fish and chips from them. They really need to sort out the fryer in this place its really anoying.The food is great but in all honesty im fed up with being kept waiting week after week. Ive taken the view that there are plenty of other great chip shops in north leeds who always have food in the rack waiting to go.Sorry nash's you had your chance but blew it.

Down to earth no frills fish and chip restaurant : the full works .....fish and chips , bread and butter and a cup of tea , and mushy peas if you want them . Very good rates for pensioners !

Went Thursday at 6.10, waited just over 15 minutes, big queue in front of me and waited for chips - there appeared to be 2 chip fryers but they were only using 1 - don't know why, there's always a queue and a wait here (imagine waiting that long just for a bag of chips!). Also there seemed to be a shift changeover so only 1 staff member was serving mostly (busy time for a changeover) and staff werent rushed e.g. could have taken orders while waiting for chips, staff didnt so had a further wait while someone paid by credit card. Got lots of chips but, as seems true anywhere when you are waiting for chips, some were underdone. Bad for a chipshop when the chips arent very good!Also, a few items on menu werent ready - this is not unusual but could say on menu to request them immediately, normally when you walk into a chipshop staff ask, but here they were too busy.Overall from experience and other reviews, this place needs to think about service, with 2 staff on the takeaway at all times and chips ready. And pay attention to the queue and speed of service!

Ate lunch here. Restaurant was quiet. The food and service were excellent. Try the homemade apple pie, it melts in the mouth. Look on the walls at the autographs of the famous people who have eaten there.

A traditional Friday treat with what are usually the best fish and chips for miles!Maybe its a sign of its popularity but on a Friday evening you can pretty much be guaranteed to be queuing for a good 20 minutes waiting for what seems like a lack of planning on their part.How many times do people have to wait as its either r a lack of fish ready or chips not ready?Last time I was in a few customers expressed their annoyance about having to wait such a long time for items being made ready. (its the same most Fridays I call in)Surely it doesn't take much to realise that between 6 and 8.30pm you'll be over-run with customers so get busy cooking!. With customers queuing up its not that the items are going to wait long before they've been served. Its a frustration that can easily be remedied.

The fish & chips are truly excellent and I can't recommend then enough! On the night that I stopped by to grab a take away there were 3 customers ahead of me, all of whom had placed their orders. I waited for over 15 minutes before I was served during which time a huge queue formed behind me and some people even walked out. Once served the food was served up straight away and it does all seem to be cooked fresh rather than standing around keeping warm. Although the serving staff are desperately in need of some time & motion training, if you go in prepared for a bit of a wait you'll not be disappointed with the food!!

We went last Friday (20th) and had the all day special which is fish, chips, sauce, bread/butter and a drink for either £7.50 or £7.95. The batter was fresh, everything was freshly cooked and the waitress was lovely (although holding her own in the restaurant).The only mistake we made was thinking that the food would come in normal chip shop time when it's more of a restaurant wait of 25-ish mins for the food to come. We were a little pushed for time so had to check when the food was coming. I want to clarify though that it wasn't particularly slow, just slower than we expected. I mention it here just to make others aware that it's not an option for a quick meal as we thought it would be. Our fault, not theirs but worth flagging up to others.

The traditional fish and chips are always excellent in the upstairs cafe. The wait can be quite a long time - but they cook them fresh.The bread and butter is basic - wouldn't it be wonderful to have some gorgeous bread in a cafe with the chips. The cafe has no atmosphere can be a little cold but we go for the best fish and chips.

Good quality everytime i have been. Service has been a bit of a problem in past, but we go for the food and the trade off is worth it.

i went with my knitting group,booked for 12.30pm,didn't come ask what drinks we wanted so went o bar. then when came take our order which felt like hour. food ok but add hoc handed out most people eating their fish&chip waiting for peas. i had grilled fish came with chips. which i asked for the grilled fish which comes with mash on menu. then waiting ages for drinks when did come tea pots only two hot water pots so asked for more for over 20 of us. never belive the size of the milk jug it was huge luckly some had tea so pour into smaller jugs.mostly old ladies.im not. one old lady said it was slap dash& wouldnt go back next year for knitting group xmas dinner r recommend to a friend for lunch.

Nash's is definitely our favourite chippy in the Leeds area. Always great quality and we love the extra touches around sustainable fish & recycled packaging. Normally we get a takeaway although recently we also enjoyed a family meal in the cafe.

We got take out as our usual Fish and Chip shop (Kirby's in Meanwood) was closed for their holidays. We thought we'd go to Nash's as, though it's a little more expensive, it's always been good in the past. Sadly, it seems to have let it's standards slip. The chips were rather rubbery and the batter was far too thick and hard. My fish was two bits of fish stuck together and one of those tasted like it had been hanging around for a while and was unpleasantly "fishy".On the plus side the staff were friendly enough and the place looks clean. We will probably try it again at some point as this may just have been a bad day.

The food here is excellent and the service spot on...we had generous portions and quick service in a nice cosy setting. Have been having takeaways from here for years but first time using the cafe...we'll be back. Thanks...

I've been to this fish and chip shop a number of times over the last few years and always highly recommended it to friends. Until today has to be my first disappointing visit. Mushy peas tasted completely bland. Fish batter had a somewhat flour taste to it. Chips were sodden in grease when unwrapping.I suspect the chips had been sitting there a while. Usually when I go here it's always very busy, a good sign. Will give it a while before I go back

A good, traditional eatery serving excellent fish and chips. Service with a s mile, food piping hot, plenty of tea refills. Really very good.

The worst Fish & Chip shop my family and I have experienced. Dirty toilets and rude staff. The food was over priced and too greasy. My son was sick when we got home. Will stick to Murgatroyds near Leeds/Bradford airport where Nash's should visit and learn how a Fish & Chip shop should be run. Nash's has gone downhill.

Restaurant was clean and tidy but could do with a lick of paint to brighten it up although not as drab as some reviews would have you believe.The fish was delicious, large, flaky and in a crisp batter. The only slight gripe would be the three pieces of bread between two of us, which is a bit mean, also why do all fish and chip restaurants cut their bread corner to corner? You can't make a proper chip butty like that! Plenty of good strong tea is a must and didn't disappoint. The waitress was efficient and cheerful and couldn't do enough for us.

Had a Groupon voucher but left it to late to use it before my hols, you have to book the restaurant. Rang them and they said no problem get a take away. Great except no peas available and when I got them home I coudnt eat them, the fish was raw inside the soggy thick batter. They went in the bin. Wont be going back.

To be honest I wasnt that impressed when we walked in. It looks a bit drab and could so with a lick of paint. I went with my mum, her bf and my gran as part of a groupon offer, which is why it was good value. The visit was made better by Isaac who was more scrumptious than my steak and kidney pie! The piece of fish I stole from my grans plate was gorgeous. I wiild return if I get more offers, but wouldnt pay full price

Excellent meal at Nash's; the haddock was beautifully cooked. Service was excellent.One gripe though: the restaurant decor was terrible and is in desperate need of a refurb.

If you fancy the homely atmosphere of Nash's upstairs restaurant at great prices then dip your bread in folks! One of the best Giant Haddocks I ever had ;-)
