The place was filthy. Tables covered in dirty china, old food, dirty tablecloths. The floors could not have been swept in ages & not washed recently that’s for certain! Waste bins in the toilets were also overflowing. It was a quiet midweek visit. Food debris was seen throughout the dining areas. Absolutely disgusted by what we experienced. Ordered drinks & once we found a table (which we cleaned ourselves) & then saw the state of the place - immediately regretted it. The place was so bad it made us all feel very uneasy about any hygiene standards being adhered to. It was generally disgusting overall. Some dogs were having a field day hoovering up under various tables- as so much food debris was left all over the floors in both areas of seating! The tables were covered in old food, with most tables having dirty plates etc left on them. No one was clearing or cleaning tables. One table had a reserved sign - it was surrounded by other tables that had not been cleared in some time going by the old dried food on plates/ dirty tablecloths & dirty teacups etc & there were many. Staff were not busy - just lazy. Only one young server (lad) came into the seating area with hot drinks, but failed to take any crockery away as he returned to the kitchen! The so called female ‘manager’ would be sacked if employed by us. Teas were served from scum lined metal pots that may have been put through a dishwasher (at some point) but had evidently not been cleaned thoroughly in a long time - going by the state of the scum inside. We witnessed a rude staff response when a polite complaint was made by one person ahead of our own group. Sarcasm is not necessary, nor professional esp as the girl with dark hair, was very rude to the lady when she politely requested a replacement clean pot! No wonder she got called out for it when the so called ‘Manager’ was even ruder to her for responding to the girls overheard sarcasm - I wanted to applaud the lady who stood up to this so called ‘manager’. She called the customer rude?!! No she responded to rudeness. We left shortly afterwards - not a pleasant experience & we will not be returning either. Staff training required & more so good management is obv missing. Cleaning would be a good starting point.

A lovely garden area in which to enjoy a break with a toastie, cake or cuppa. Lots of seating outdoors though chairs can be wet of course if the weather is anything other than dry. Parking is limited to 2 hours for customers but make sure your reg number is entered into the system by the tills to avoid a penalty charge, though when we visited we were advised that the cameras were not operational that day, so check.

Visited with 5 friends on a sunny Sunday in mid-March. The ordering system is ridiculous and the high price of a small teapot and £4 for one scone with jam and cream is completely unjustified, especially on a student budget as we are and as many in Cambridge are. We did not order sandwiches or any proper lunch foods due to the high prices. If sitting outside, you have to go up and queue at a door to a table at the entrance to the dining room, and order at this table. There is no signage for this anywhere! When you get to this table to order, it is your first chance to look at a menu, so obviously that slows the ordering process a lot. We waited for at least 15 minutes to even order, as customers in front of us were indecisive: fine, but clearly indicative that two ordering stations and earlier access to menus would be an improvement. You then take a buzzer to your table to notify you when to come and collect your order. Two pots of tea, a scone and a slice of cake took 20 minutes to prepare. You have to take your tray back to the main building when you have finished. There were also no signs for toilets at all, and it was impossible to find a staff member to ask for their whereabouts. The Tea Garden was hosting what I assume was a large school trip at the time of our visit, and their queue to get into one of the smaller dining rooms was totally obstructing the narrow corridor leading to the loos that I eventually found. The large orchard/garden does have plenty of tables a nice distance from one another with deckchairs, most full as it was the weekend! Overall: very poor system for ordering, no real 'service', confusing signs if any, high prices and very limited parking options. But nice atmosphere in the orchard if it is a sunny day.

Edites 2024 Tea gardens are now in different thanks and m2nu is drastically reduced. They do not have enough staff and you can queue for up to am hour for food. There is no set system for people queuing to sit inside vs outside so it's muddled slow and disorganised. The tea gardens are a must especially in the warmer weather we are now getting. Arrive early to avoid disappointment as seating is at a premium due to popularity of the beautiful setting amongst the orchard trees. There is a good range of food here for snacks tea and scones, sandwiches, drinks etc and you can book a table for a party and afternoon tea. Be prepared to be patient as the queue is often long to get served and the staff a little slow. However she you are served everything is lovely, staff are helpful and food is delicious.

It is a very historical place, Bertrand Russell himself has a photo taken in the orchard. I ordered a cream tea (£4.7), came with one homemade scone, and shop bought clotted cream and jam. Add a cup of tea is another £3.3. Although the scone is homemade, I would prefer to have homemade jam and cream. Also, £3.3 for a tea bag and some hot water is too much, even for London. Never the less, I enjoyed my cream tea.

I love this little gem of a tea garden! The food is so delicious and they have great coffee. I also love how the inside is decorated. I only gave 4 stars because we were waiting for our bill and then to pay for almost an hour! Even though it was super busy as it was a Sunday afternoon, we had to start putting our coats on before the server came over with the card machine! So maybe a few more employees would ease the pressure at busier times. Also if you don't like egg then it feels like you lose some value for money.. I asked to swap the egg for some smoked salmon but instead I had to pay extra for salmon even with no egg, making it £14 for avocado and smoked salmon on toast which seemed like quite a lot! So maybe having some flexibility and options to swap would be great :)

My daughter and I booked this lovely little place whilst visiting Cambridge. The afternoon tea was really good with a great selection of sandwiches, scones and savoury quiches all made on the premises. The service was very professional, the staff were attentive and very keen to make sure we had everything we needed. If I was to criticise very slightly, i think the outside tables should be put on the gravel next to the restaurant. It was a bit muddy on the day, so our shoes got a bit dirty and we found it hard to move the chairs easily. Apart from that....loved the experience, thank you 😊

We are tourists from out of town and found this gem through a google search. We booked for an afternoon cream tea. All the food is made in-house. The persons working provided phenomenal service and checked in with us regularly. There wasn’t a vegetarian option online, perhaps we could have warned them, but it might be an idea to have it as an option some day when booking on the website. We are loose vegetarians so it wasn’t much of a bother. We asked for more tea and they were happy to provide. They got us a bigger one with two tea bags for the two of us. The food was amazing, and the staff happily moved us outside as requested on the day. Other constructive feedback I would give: I think providing two sets of cutlery would be wonderful, one for savoury and one for sweet. A lovely little touch would be to have quirky china English tea pots cups and saucers to match the cream tea aesthetic. They are not expensive and would really add to the experience! I also think an option to “upgrade” the tea to a glass/bottle of wine would be a great upsell! We had a wonderful time and will be encouraging others to go. Thank you to the team for a wonderful experience

Very historic place, bet it’s very nice in the summer. Bottom room I would avoid it’s run down and tatty Top room has a good atmosphere is warmer and looks maintained. Staff OK but the lad who served us didn’t know what the soup do the day was which is pretty basic stuff to know. Food was all good, only criticism was the sourdough toast (though very nice) wasn’t buttered on the breakfasts which made it dry. Coffee was nice middle of the road on taste, eggs sausage and bacon all very pleasant. Soup and cheese scones amazing I am told. Only thing would make it better is to do some work on the bottom room, sort plasterboard damage in roof, get it painted up as it looks neglected, add / fix log burner or heating as it was drafty and cold down there and butter the blinking toast or at least ask / offer butter. Having avocado with the Breccy I had never had before and it was decent and much enjoyed. Food was pretty nice and it is definately worth a visit and walk (summer months especially I would think) Dog Friendly too

I hate to write such a negative review of somewhere I have enjoyed visiting many many times but I have to ask the question 'What on earth has happened to the iconic Orchard Tea rooms'? It was once a place that we loved to take friends (we took friends there on Saturday but it was such a disappointment). It was very sad to see. On a positive, the Avocado Toast with Poached Egg was Ok but the tea was cold, service was very slow and I don't know where to start on the toilet facilities (looked like they had never been cleaned and one cubicle had it's handle missing which made it virtually impossible to lock the door). If the loos are a reflection of the kitchen cleanliness it's a real worry (I cannot believe the loos in their current state would pass Environmental Health Officer muster!). The place looks unloved :(

The service is extremely poor. Had to wait for sometime to be seated while tables were available and not enough staff to prepare them for the next customers. We sat outside and the table was very dirty. When I asked the waitress who brought the food to wipe it first, she just distributed the mud all over the table surface and left the food without cutlery, on the table and disappeared. I had never seen that kind of service anywhere in the UK. The cream tea was nice, but had to ask three members of staff until to get a tea to go with it! The soups were nice and scones very tasty. The avocado toast was fine but the extra bacon we ordered to go with it looked like a piece of rubber. They had ran out of the sandwiches that my husband wanted. I had very good memories of this place but I don't think I would go there anymore or recommend it to someone.

Couldn’t be bothered to challenge it so paid it but did challenge the lack of clarity with the management and got a sneering and rude response. The place is anyway not very disability friendly with few suitable chairs and as others have observed the price has risen and the quality is average at best. Scones are impeccable, to the extent that thinking about coming here for the scone can save me from cravings for scones at many other places (such as coffee chains). Ham and Cheddar Panini Melt was surprisingly tasty. The bread was crisp and thin (less carbs for me) and the cheese melts perfectly on the ham. The crisps were really crunchy. Coffee from automated machine. Nothing really to comment on without the injection of some human spirit. Not bad. Tea from Twining tea bags, which is a little sad for a tea garden, isn’t it? Food and drink is quite overpriced here, but it’s worth paying for the environment at the lovely and relaxing garden. — update 2023 Same lovely scones after change of hands. Lucky we made it a few minutes before closing and bought one of the last tray— warm out of oven. Inside the crunchy shell, it is moist yet indulgently crumbly, not too sweet. Still my favorite in Cambridge and among the top in my UK list. — Such a long line during the warm October Sunday afternoon. The scone is wonderful as usual. Warm, crusty, moist. So disappointing! After purchasing our coffee & cake we decided to take a seat outside in the Orchard. The sun came out and we sat back in our chairs enjoying the quiet of a beautiful autumn morning. This is after all the reason most people go ….to experience the beauty & atmosphere of an iconic & quintessentially old English orchard along with all its history. We were startled out of our dreamy morning coffee by the very loud and tinny sound of rock music which came blaring out from the open doors and windows of the cafe kitchen. I don’t think the staff here “get it” in terms of what they’ve taken on! This is not a burger joint in the city centre, it’s an old established iconic tea room set in a beautiful orchard! The inside is sadly also very shabby and crumbling (toilets are not great either) but I don’t think this bothered me as much as the ill placed & inconsiderate music! It would be nice to see this place run by people who understood the responsibility of the heritage they’ve undertaken.

Spacious and beautiful tea garden. We spent a couple of hours enjoying our cream tea and the outdoor garden. The food was good, the garden was lovely. To those who would like to visit—be prepared to spend substantial amount of time queuing and then looking for a place to sit since even in February it was challenging to find an unoccupied table. Pros *Freshly baked scones with clotted cream and variety of jams *Big and beautiful garden *Picturesque pathways and surrounding areas, we walked to Cambridge after having a cream tea and enjoyed our little walk immensely Cons *Queues 😑 *Staff are here to mind the cash counter, you would beed to find a table and bring your trays there by yourself. Tbh, it’s not really a con, just a mild inconvenience but I almost dropped my tray since it was heavy and that’s an unpleasant memory. *As tables and chairs are often located under the trees, don’t be surprised to see bird poo covering them. 😊

Boy does this place need a makeover!! Don’t think it’s been decorated since Rupert Brooke drank his tea there !! Dark , dirty and grim . If you fancy afternoon tea in a scout hut , this is the place for you , very disappointed

Lovely garden and great vibe to enjoy the last big of summer, except for some queuing in a good weather, but understandable. Plus, perfect view and distance to hike back to the city. Highly recommend!

By far the best scones I've ever had. Their scones are so popular the fresh ones being baked constantly. Felt it's bit pricy for what you get but it was really good scones... However it's a cafeteria style serving (you bring your tray and take it to your seat yourself) so no service is provided really.

You can't beat the outdoor sitting area and the meadows for walking (5 stars just for that reasoning alone). Flat white was good and cakes etc are fairly standard. They stop serving food at 3pm, so we missed it this time. Also, the tables outside need to be cleaned more often.

Little coffee shop and cafe by the river in Grantchester. Prices are what you expect then a bit more, but the latte was really good. 2 hours parking on site, after 2 hours the charges are, ahem, rather steep! That's as kind as I can be. We only had drinks so can't comment on the food. You can do a walk along the river and back for coffee easily within the 2 hours so it's not all gloom.

Nice place to be but grossly over-expensive for what it is. They should also spend some money on the toilets as they are pretty gross too. There is no real service hence the middle ranking.

Lovely garden space and really nice food selection with local ingredients! A sunny day would flood the counters a bit too much, so get here arky to find a spot or chairs! Had some warm scones for cream tea one sunday afternoon, which was lovely.
