The food was nice but the service was dreadful. We were a party of 10 for a special meal. The starters were interesting and the main courses standard pub fare. We had to ask to order after 30 minutes waiting. The starters then came a reasonable time after that, but then the mains came out before the starters had been taken away. The waitress seemed a bit shocked that this was her role. There was no voluntary provision of cutlery for the main course. We decided to abandon the battle for deserts! What a shame as the venue could be so much better

This is a great place to meet friends and/or family for a meal. We had a great evening. There is a lovely cosy atmosphere. The staff are so friendly and welcoming and they really know their venue and menu! Some in our party had gluten free needs and this was received well by staff. Nothing was a hassle, everything a pleasure. They guided us to menu items that would meet our dietary needs and offered ways that menu items could be adapted to meet needs. The food that came looked and tasted amazing and the portion sizes were good. We will definitely go back and would recommend this place to others.

I always really liked the food at the Red Lion when we've gone in the past - it was ok, nothing to get too excited about. Service was good. Main issue is we were a table of 5 sat at a really tiny ill-placed table for 4 people max, very cramped, and up against a wall with a huge piece of artwork that jutted out onto the table. The place felt a bit more run down than last time we went, dirty, smelly, and toilets with huge cracks / holes round some kind of trap door (manhole cover?) in the floor which are both unsightly and a trip hazard.

Chronic food poisoning for two of our party (both from fish orders). Appalling local and central office response. Lovely building but they cram you in. Parking was terrible (a busy day when we went - sunny etc), cars just circling asking if you are leaving etc. Also, parking is run by a parking firm so need to be careful. If you do go, perhaps park further away and get an Uber is my view. I'd give it a miss personally.

Incredibly disappointing. I'd only heard good things about the Red Lion but never been. I booked for a special family meal to enjoy the warm weather, and it didn't state anywhere that terrace seating didn't include table service. The entire surface of the table was incredibly sticky. Ordering at the bar was fine, but the person who put in our order didn't know how to order the starters to come first, so the bread came with our mains. When we were served, our roasts didn't include mint sauce and the server said it wasn't included. When we told her mint sauce was on the menu, she was surprised, but did end up coming back with it. The wait staff just seemed incredibly junior and lacking in knowledge; the amount we paid for the meals and the general reputation of the restaurant led me to believe that it would be a better experience. At least everyone agreed the food was good. I would not chance a family celebration on an unknown restaurant like this again. Definitely do not recommend.

I was given pub vouchers to celebrate our wedding anniversary so I picked the Red lion to use them as they were listed on the pub tokens website. We told the staff when we arrived and were reassured it would be fine to use them. When it came to paying the bill the staff disappeared for ages and came back to tell us we could not use our vouchers. This ruined what was supposed to be a lovely treat. In contacting the pub I was informed ( after a month of waiting) that we should have been able to use them and could do so next time. This is not very useful and no goodwill gesture was mentioned whatsoever. The food was expensive but good however the place lacked atmosphere and the service was terrible. We were ignored for quite some time before we could even place a drinks order. I would not hurry back to The Red Lion.

Very good steak but need to review their care for gluten free customers: very restrictive app which is more about what you can't eat than what you can..only one starter and one dessert choice...even the ice cream was deemed not possible..very frustrating for a non-coeliac. The menu offered a fantastic selection of classic pub dishes, and everything we tried was spot on: fish pie, steak sandwich with fries and a knickerbocker glory to share., which was hearty and full of flavor. The portion size was generous, making it excellent value for money. To wash it down, we each had a half pint of one of the local ales. Which was the perfect complement to our meals. The service was quick, attentive, and friendly, adding to the overall great experience. Despite being busy, the staff made sure we had everything we needed and checked in on us at just the right moment.

Unwelcoming. Used to be a great place for a family drink and food. As soon as you walk in, you are made to feel unwelcome and uncomfortable by an empty soulless messy bar with empty glasses all over the place and a gruff manager asking you to state your business. Not exactly a comfort. Long wait at the bar. If you want any bar snacks you have to wait at the bar whilst they are being cooked, amongst the stacks of dirty dishes and glasses. Mocktail was out a can at £9.50 and disgusting and we stood at the empty bar for ten minutes as the single rather rude bar staff was busy doing table orders. Good job nobody else was waiting to be served. Clearly going in for a drink is considered beneath their dignity - you have to have a meal. Don’t think I’ll be going back after ten years of patronage. The play area in the garden is good, but throwing old metal ovens into the garden isn’t really good for the safety of free roaming toddlers. This was their last chance. Turned an amazing place into somewhere really quite horrible

A very pleasant, quite large pub restaurant in the delightful tourist venue that is Grantchester. Staff are very attentive, and we were asked about allergies. Note there is a 12.5% service charge, noted in small print at foot of the menu. Our club sandwiches were well filled, and made with sourdough bread, so all good. However the chips to share was a really very small portion, tempting me to work our the price per chip - around 10-15p I reckon. The meal in the photo, with a pint of Eatrella and a half of cider, came in just short of £42.

Get a new chef! This place has been drifting for a while; but now it’s deteriorated badly. Pleasant service but poor on accuracy and timeliness. But, for a gastronomic-pub, someone really needs to check the chef’s head - the menu’s a mess, self-indulgent (chicken liver profiteroles, anyone? Yes, we tried them, an no, they weren’t any good.), and yet despite the chef’s over-ambitious fancy, the food is inadequately seasoned and not actually tasty. Pity.

Dining here is dangerous for people with allergies. Avoid. Unfortunately I had a life or death experience on this pub. We were with a party and asked whether a pudding (profiterole) had nuts in them. Their member of staff behind the bar stated they did not. The profiteroles came and did have nuts in them however I had already started eating them. I then asked a member of staff and was directed to another member of staff who said speak to me (in an authoritative manner, making me presume that they were in a managerial role at The Red Lion). This individual told me to scan the QR code which stated that the profiteroles did have hazlenuts in them. I then spoke to staff about this and conveyed the message that this should be a learning curve for staff who should know what food has allergens in, however this was not taking seriously by staff whatsoever who seemed to think that food allergies which can have a detrimental affect to people’s health and life are a joke. Just a word of caution for those eating here in the future

This is probably the lowest quality meal I have paid for in a long time. Dry chicken in the salad, no dressing, tasteless cheap food and the child's mac and cheese was completely inedible it didn't contain any cheese and very clearly came from a packet. I will not mention price as even though this was disgracefully overpriced given how poor the food was it would still be awful if it had cost half as much. Clearly due to location they do not require repeat business but frankly the owners should be genuinely embarrassed that the food they are selling is not even half as good as what you would get in a school canteen. I used to absolutely love the red lion! The food was always beautiful in a nice setting and nice staff. However the last few times the service and food has completely deteriorated. Booked well in advance for Father’s Day, party of 11 in total. We waited almost 3 hours for food, the staff were all over the place and no one willing to help. We were a 12.30 booking so when we arrived it was NOT busy, very little tables at all but soon started to fill up and clearly the staff could not handle this. The table we had was awful. Seated right next to the play park. The majority of tables around us were also complaining. People walking out as their food hadn’t arrived. The manager is extremely dismissive. He should be helping the staff, organising the floor staff and giving everyone sections rather than everyone running around like headless chickens. They had the audacity to add service and when asking for it to be removed the manager didn’t even ask how our time there was and what the issue was. Very disappointing. His passive aggressive behaviour will not last long in a busy restaurant. You need to support your team and care about your customers. Hopefully they organise themselves very soon as I visited at least once a week before but will be avoiding at all costs for a while now.

It was extremely overpriced and they did not have the resources to comply with so many dishes. It was a very poor decision as preparing 2 courses per person increased their tasks leading to very long delays. I saw many customers asking for the bill after the starter. The food took 45 min to get served or longer. Even the dessert took 30 min after we had ordered it. As a consequence the food was also very badly cooked. My burger was hard and dry. Went for an evening meal at The Red Lion which didn't disappoint! The place has a lovely atmosphere and the staff were very friendly and helpful, we were given some great recommendations for both the food as well as the Summer cocktails. I decided to forego my usual Aperol Spritz order for the Bumbu rum punch, which was absolutely delicious, I will definitely be having that one again! The food was fantastic. I'm usually more of a dessert person but was tempted by so many of the starters on the menu, we ended up choosing the chicken skewers and the gnocchi. Both were excellent, but the chicken skewers were particularly amazing and I would go back just for those! For mains, we each chose from the steaks on the specials menu, the rump steak for me following an excellent recommendation from Pedro our waiter, was beyond outstanding. The meat was cooked exactly as I requested and almost melted in the mouth. The peppercorn sauce was also surprisingly good given I tend to avoid sauces in case they take away from the meat. My partner had the sirloin steak, which was also very tasty indeed. We both said they were the best steaks we've had in Cambridge for a long time! Of course, we couldn't avoid dessert after seeing the peach melba knickerbocker glory, not only does it look amazing, it tasted like absolute heaven. Overall, an excellent experience with delicious food and cocktails, great service and lovely ambience. Not much more we could ask for really!

It was mediocre to be fair; nothing really wrong but certainly nothing to write home about. Presentation was dull. For the price this was however, below par. The restaurant was not full. We a party of 5 went to have lunch at the Red Lion yesterday. Decor was excellent. That's where the positive aspects of this review end! We were shown to our table and informed that the waiter that the menus will be forthcoming. 10 minutes later whe went and got them ourselves. The menu was reassuringly expensive for example £15.00 for a sunday roast, so we had a certain level of expectation. About an hour later our meals turned up. It was one of the worst roast dinners I have ever had. The yorkshire pudding was full of oil, the meat was as tough as old boots and the portion size was more suitable for a child's portion with literally two tiny bits of roast potato on everyones plate. I did complain to the waiting staff and they said it's because it was busy and should try items on the rest of the menu next time as it was better. There definitely WILL NOT be a next time. A delay of service due to a busy restaurant I can accept (busy because of location and passing trade). What is not acceptable under any cirumstances is substandard food. The beer was not that great either. Overpriced and awful food. I wish I'd checked reviews first. Total waste of £85.00. **Bear in mind this was 10 years ago. I haven't been back since. I'm assuming you're new management. If you now say everything is "Stellar" I will try you again! ** Hopefully, I can give you a stellar review. Best wishes

We were kept waiting at bar for 25 mins as our table wasn't available, obviously previous participants not told to clear table in time, even if they arrived late they should have been reminded that the table needs to be free by a certain time. Once we were told our table was free they led us to the bar table which we informed them that we were booked into restaurant so then had to wait longer. Food arrived but senior staff shot off without asking what condiments we wanted so hailed a waitress to sort them. Nobody asked how food was or if we wanted anything else. When we had to hail another waitress for drinks, three drinks asked for had ran out . Bill arrived with 12.5% auto tip which we refused due to poor management service, not waitress's fault. Place was like a cattle market shoving to many people through so ended up like being at a busy Wetherspoons rather than the treat we hoped it would be. We went to Rupert Brooke for dessert which was much more of a pleasurable experience and organised.

Great food in local Granchester pub. Worth booking in advance at weekends but plenty of tables inside. Good atmosphere and quick service and the food was delicious

Good food. Several lagers unavailable on our visit. Service charge of 12.5% automatically applied to the bill. Luckily, service was good.

We enjoyed Sunday lunch. We sat in a quiet corner of the pub. We were genuinely surprised that the pub was not busier. Three of us ate fish and chips - which was well cooked. The fourth person simply ate vegetables. We enjoyed Grantchester - walking along the water meadow and also along the footpath past the Old Rectory to access the River Cam.

Pretty looking pub amongst a few good pubs in Grantchester. The food is good but the selection of beers and ales on draught is what brings us back. Marry that with a nice chilled atmosphere and a nice pub garden, it's become one of our favourites to visit after work when we need to wind down.

Low quality food. Tiramisu is a joke, there is no mascarpone and there is no coffee.

This pub has so much potential, but it's ruined by constantly changing ownership and staff- it seems to have a revolving door policy. It's clear this isn't a family run pub, and that’s reflected in everything. Some of the worst pub food imaginable- shamefully bad. Indifferent staff. No personal touch. I hope they can sort it out or it's the Green Man otherwise.

A somewhat perfunctory welcome in the bar made up for by excellent service in the garden. The fact that all 3 or 4 salt cellars which we tried seemed damp and unable to produce salt made up for by an excellent blackcurrant sorbet. Overall: lovely location, good food, excellent table service in garden. Thank you.

I've eaten here a few times. The food is usually really good. I had the chicken Kiev today and it was a little dry but otherwise still good. The staff are excellent, one of our group was a little fussy but they dealt really well with it. We will come back again!

I have always had a fantastic time at the Red Lion. The staff, Georgia and Pedro especially, have always been fantastic and friendly. We have eaten in the private dining room (parties of eight or more), the restaurant and outside the back. During spring and summer the outside is lovely, quiet and cool, and in winter the inside is warm and cosy. Dogs are welcome, there is alcohol free on tap and the food is honestly brilliant. I've not had an item on the menu I didn't absolutely love.

I am gluten free and the company don’t offer a paper menu . This is embarrassing in front of friends Had to order on the waiters phone app . Ordered a ceaser salad with broccoli 😩it consisted of gem lettuce pieces with sauce salt and pepper a few gratings of cheese and broccoli stems on top .that and a coffee was £21 and I felt like a rabbit while my friend (13 of them) ate like royalty . I believe this restaurant could have done a lot better . A gluten allergy doesn’t mean nothing other than lettuce ! Very upset!

Went for a mother’s day lunch with my family. I had the roast lamb followed by the eton mess. It was very tasty! My family also very much enjoyed their meals. The waitress, Chelsea, was very attentive and made sure i got my complimentary glass of prosecco with my meal. She seemed very knowledgable of the menu and I was very impressed that she asked if any of the party had any allergens before taking our order. Will 100% be back and if Chelsea is working, I hope she will be our waitress.

Very excited to pop in and have a toasty and cream scones after reading great reviews. Sadly the service fell WAY short to basically ruin the experience. No hint of any customer service by the young lady on the till. Inflexible with regard to timing of our lunch. Made it very clear there was no table service! Appreciate it was probably the end of a long day, but keep it going until the doors close! In summary .. good food, tainted by poor service. 😞

The rating I've given is for the cafe. Waited in a long queue for at least 10mins before I even got the hot drinks i ordered the Mint Hot chocolate with cream and aero pieces thought I'd treat myself it was nearly £5 so I a good Hot Chocolate, well it was in a normal sized cup 3 quarters full with some cream and areo springed on top it was luke warm. The staff weren't overly friendly either. I won't be rushing back anytime soon

Really excellent Sunday lunch, lovely food - attentive and rapid service, great atmosphere - wood burners roaring. And great value .
