This pub has so much potential, but it's ruined by constantly changing ownership and staff- it seems to have a revolving door policy. It's clear this isn't a family run pub, and that’s reflected in everything. Some of the worst pub food imaginable- shamefully bad. Indifferent staff. No personal touch. I hope they can sort it out or it's the Green Man otherwise.

A somewhat perfunctory welcome in the bar made up for by excellent service in the garden. The fact that all 3 or 4 salt cellars which we tried seemed damp and unable to produce salt made up for by an excellent blackcurrant sorbet. Overall: lovely location, good food, excellent table service in garden. Thank you.

I have always had a fantastic time at the Red Lion. The staff, Georgia and Pedro especially, have always been fantastic and friendly. We have eaten in the private dining room (parties of eight or more), the restaurant and outside the back. During spring and summer the outside is lovely, quiet and cool, and in winter the inside is warm and cosy. Dogs are welcome, there is alcohol free on tap and the food is honestly brilliant. I've not had an item on the menu I didn't absolutely love.

I am gluten free and the company don’t offer a paper menu . This is embarrassing in front of friends Had to order on the waiters phone app . Ordered a ceaser salad with broccoli 😩it consisted of gem lettuce pieces with sauce salt and pepper a few gratings of cheese and broccoli stems on top .that and a coffee was £21 and I felt like a rabbit while my friend (13 of them) ate like royalty . I believe this restaurant could have done a lot better . A gluten allergy doesn’t mean nothing other than lettuce ! Very upset!

Went for a mother’s day lunch with my family. I had the roast lamb followed by the eton mess. It was very tasty! My family also very much enjoyed their meals. The waitress, Chelsea, was very attentive and made sure i got my complimentary glass of prosecco with my meal. She seemed very knowledgable of the menu and I was very impressed that she asked if any of the party had any allergens before taking our order. Will 100% be back and if Chelsea is working, I hope she will be our waitress.

The Red Lion in Grantchester has become our firm favourite for special family lunches for Mother's Day and Christmas. On Sunday we experienced charming and efficient service as usual from Kirsten, Kevin and the rest of the team. Vegetarian/vegan mains always give satisfaction and the puddings are delicious too. The pub has stylish decor, a pleasant beer garden, plus lots of cosy corners and toasty fires in the winter. In terms of location, there is ample parking and great access to the Meadows for a brisk walk to burn off a few calories... Keep up the good work guys.

We used to really enjoy The Red Lion but over the last year we have been disappointed each time we have visited. While the food this time was good (last time it was terrible, do not order the Veggie Fish and Chips!) the service was awful we had to go and find people to take our orders and they ignored us at the bar, however the cherry on top was the inapproiate genital joke made in the direction of my partner. Incredibly unprofessional.

Disappointing options if gluten free. Allergy board obscured by a sticker. Asked bar staff who advised they could not help. Told to scan and read menu on line. This was the same as printed version we had been given. Asked if burger could be done with no bun plus chips done in an in separate fryer. Lovely server referred to kitchen but came back no as they could not guarantee cross contamination. Left with a choice of broccoli salad, tofu or risotto. Looking for a main meal for the day so went for a risotto. This portion was the size of a saucer. Everyone else had great food. I left hungrier than when I entered.

Me and my friend came here for a Sunday roast. Our food came within 2 minutes of ordering which meant it was just sitting under a hot plate. It was lukewarm. Then we had to wait for our cutlery as nothing was on the table. As soon as we ate the waitress said she would bring the bill.... But we wanted another drink. Felt very rushed to get out. Waitress was nice until I asked for the service charge to be taken off (no reason to pay the service charge as the service was poor). Won't be returning for a Sunday roast as the price is not justifiable for what we received.

This review is subjective as the service was good, the ambience good (if you like dogs) and the seating was ok. However, I left highly disappointed and dissatisfied. We went for a special 3 generational family Sunday lunch. I am the token vegetarian but love a good roast Wellington and this was on offer. Oh my….£18.50 so expectations were high, what I got…3 half roast potatoes, 3 carrots, red cabbage, no kale as stated and probably the worst Wellington I’ve tasted to date. It was a processed lump of soya with pastry around it….Apparently I’m the first person to ever complain about it, hence I say it’s subjective but what a lazy vegan/vegetarian roast!! The alternative was deep fried tofu…The menu would suggest the chef or management put a veggie/vegan on the menu but have no interest in ensuring it’s to a good fresh quality. I’m vegetarian as I like vegetables not meat so don’t expect a vegetarian Wellington to look like processed meat, I would rather eat fresh meat than this! Anyhow, the rest of the family said their meals were ok, the management took mine off the menu so all in all the majority of our table were satisfied so it’s just my opinion but I 💯 won’t be venturing again, especially when I know a few steps down the road I can get an amazing vegetarian roast!

Ok this is a contradictory review. The ambience of the pub is good. A poor experience for what is a lovely looking pub. We had a decent sized party of 21 adults and 11 odd kids for a 70th birthday celebration. At £25 a head, the amount of food was a joke and probably would have cost under £100 from your local waitrose or M&S. Bearing in mind, over half of the people visiting had travelled around 100 miles for a buffet lunch it was nowhere enough. Think a half empty side plate for food amounts provided for adults only. The extra food requested for the children was forgotten. The majority of food ordered was for vegetarians, which in the main did not even come out and another dietry requirement missed altogether. An excuse later received was that a delivery did not turn up. Service was non-existent unless prompted. A small refund has been received with a rather bullish response and no real apology. I would recommend you go elsewhere if you are planning a similar event. It was deeply disappointing.

Okay people, they have upped the game for vegan Sunday roasts! The vegan Wellington seemed to me like a beyond meat/beetroot/veg combination that was hearty, juicy, and full of flavor. Huge portion sizes. Veg cooked to perfection. Extra savory gravy. I am completely impressed! It’s so nice to have an actual Sunday roast and not just veggies as the afterthought “vegan option”. The staff is super friendly and made every effort to accommodate us even when we didn’t have a booking during an extremely busy Sunday lunch. Adding to that, service was speedy and our food arrived perfectly hot. Full honesty on dessert, the vegan chocolate mousse could use some tweaking. The texture was a bit too thick and would be great served with vegan cream or caramel. Again, I really appreciate the Red Lion making a noticeable effort on the plant based options. They’re nailing it and I can’t wait to come back to try their other vegan dishes!

Six of us ate supper at The Red Lion last night. The food was entirely acceptable and good value for money. I went 'off piste' and had soft shelled crab burger ( yes, truly!), and it was surprisingly good. What made the evening exceptional though, was the service we got from Chelsea who was brilliant. One of our party was a visiting Canadian teenager who was very keen to have ice cream and brownies for pudding, and although they weren't on the menu, Chelsea went out of her way to provide this for our young guest.
