We visited the pub with high hopes, encouraged by the positive TripAdvisor reviews we’d read. Unfortunately, our experience didn’t live up to expectations. The pub itself is beautiful, with plenty of character and a lovely outdoor space. The staff were all friendly, welcoming, and clearly working hard to provide good service. However, our table had deep grooves that were filled with old food, salt, and other debris, which was quite off-putting. We raised this with a member of staff, who agreed it was unacceptable and kindly offered to move us to another table. The menu and food presentation suggested a high standard, with prices to match. Sadly, the quality and flavour did not reflect this. My club sandwich contained a bone, the chips were inconsistently cooked, and my husband’s seabass lacked flavour. Overall, the visit was disappointing. That said, the venue has real potential and, with some relatively small improvements, could be a fantastic place to dine.

Visited for a casual dinner with my boyfriend on Saturday evening. The waitress was very friendly and service was quick. We had a drink each, which was fine. The Red Lion services a nice selection of beers. For dinner I had the Pie of the Day, which was a fish pie, which was advertised as being serviced with greens and samphire. Sadly there was no samphire in sight, and only 1 chunk of fish in my pie, which was mostly boiled eggs. My boyfriend had the burger and chips. Which was fine, although the burger was pretty overcooked. He asked for some mayonnaise with his chips, which came in 2 paper cups. He didn’t eat the mayonnaise as it had a yellow crust on top as it’d clearly been prepared a few days prior. As I left I used the bathroom. In the bathroom only 2 out of 5 cubicles had toilet roll available. Overall, not great considering the meal was £66 for 2 mains, and 2 drinks.

Good they have Lucky Saint if you want a low or non alcoholic option. The garden looks tired with the neighbouring fencing collapsing into the pub garden and tables not clean. We ordered food on a sunny and warm evening. I thought I had ‘ordered wrong’ but frankly, you should be able to order anything from a menu and for it to taste nice. Left incredibly underwhelmed. The ranch sauce dressing on the wedge salad was incredibly artificial and the mayonnaise brought to our table was already old and congealed. You can’t eat outside either which never used to be the case and balmy considering we are entering summer. We had to have our meal indoors which became chaotic with young servers not knowing which food went to which table. If we decide to come back, I hope the food is much improved.

Went on a sunny Sunday for a roast and while the service was wonderful, and we were sat outside so it was lovely, the food was extremely disappointing. The spring roll was lovely but the smoked trout was dreadful, needed salt and citrus and the fish also had an inedible tough membrane running through it. The vegetarian roast filling tasted JUST like the spring roll so not great. The Lamb was so tough and dry and absolutely under seasoned, lacking basic salt. The veggies were over done and tasted a little old and the meal just tasted stale. At just over £50 a head I don't think its worth returning.

Exceptional experience. We went with our toddler thinking we could eat on the grass bit and the lady front of house explained that wasn’t possible and that they were completely booked but if a space came up, she’d tell us. We sat having a drink thinking that was polite but accepting we weren’t going to eat there. To our surprise, she didn’t forget and got us a table outside, which enabled our son to play outside on the play area. Food wise, burgers were amazing, sticky toffee pud was perfect, service was excellent , really great experience. The play area was well kept and didn’t look like it needed upgrading, which is unusual for pubs. So big bonus! Would defo recommend.

I am so glad that I hadn’t seen the negative reviews before I went as we would have missed a real treat. Five of us had lunch here in March and enjoyed it very much. I had the Panzanella salad, which was fresh and delicious, followed by a slice of fabulous strawberry shortbread cheesecake. My friends had fish, a “really good” burger and the fish pie. Two of them also managed the sticky toffee pudding. We all loved everything, and the friendly and efficient service could not have been better. We will definitely be back!

Building looks great shame about the food! Had 2 high chairs, both broken staff said the didn’t realise yet the bars between the legs were missing. Child steak had pepper seasoning the reason you chose children’s is you want it plain. Chips hard not sure whether they were triple cooked or over cooked. Curry sauce and mushy peas on all three fish and chips cold.

The Red Lion is a lovely pub situated close to the river in the picturesque Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester. I visited with a friend at lunchtime on a Thursday. The bar was empty, but presumably there were customers in the garden. The manager/barman was busy pouring drinks as we waited at the bar. He did not acknowledge us, welcome us or even make eye contact in the five or more minutes that we waited to be served. When he did eventually get around to serving us he was civil, but completely oblivious to the need for him to acknowledge and connect with his customers, to make them feel valued, and importantly to make them want to return on a future visit. The drinks were fine and we ordered a snack lunch of sausage sandwiches. The food arrived after an interminable wait. I hate to think how they cope when this pub is busy, and I'm sorry to say it wasn't worth the wait. With the considerable number of independent butchers in this area you would have expected something special, but these sausages were worse than Tesco's value range. A very disappointing non descript sausage sandwich with an indeterminable relish . In short this was a very disappointing experience for my friend and me. This could be a really pleasant venue and enjoyable experience if the proprietors were to invest in some staff training and development which is obviously non existent at present. Then they could work on improving the quality of their menu. I'm afraid I won't be returning any time soon.

Had my first Sunday roast there with my family. We ordered two different roasts and a separate bowl of roast potatoes with gravy. The potatoes in our roasts were definitely long past their freshness, but the separate side of roast potatoes was even worse for some reason. The gravy was tasteless and vegetables definitely overcooked. Overall, a massive disappointment :-( I think that if you serve roast dinners in the evening, they should be cooked separately to the ones served at lunch time as they lose their freshness. Food was definitely reheated as it arrived pretty quickly and none of it had any 'crunch' and the Yorkshire puddings were also chewy. I'm sorry, but I won't be coming back.

I was invited by a friend to go for morning coffee, and so we agreed to meet at 11.00. arriving, the doors were open so we went in and there was nobody there except two kitchen staff. We sat down thinking that someone would come out and find us. After 50 minutes, someone came into the bar and we asked if we could order some coffee. The firm answer was no. We were made to wait another 10 minutes before we could order. Just a simple notice to say NOT SERVING UNTIL 12.00 would have been enough. The attitude of the man behind the bar wasn't rude, but luke warm and slightly ambivalent let's say. Not a good first impression. Not sure I would bother to go back.

Well first and foremost the staff were just excellent. Wonderful service throughout and they really could not be faulted. The actual establishment itself is very nice and everything about it is lovely and clean. The reason I say average in my rating was the food was very nice but not worth the extra charge they place on it. Maybe I’m being unfair and these are Cambridge prices. My friend said her meal was bland and lack any real taste. I had a lovely meal but it was more expensive than I pay elsewhere. I would say go and try it out, but it’s that bit more in price than other places.

This used to be such a lovely pub. Has clearly changed hands and is now a shambles. We ordered a steak sandwich which we were told comes with onion rings and it did not. Ordered a fish finger sandwich and the fish fingers were stone cold and mostly just deep fried fish skins. The bread was cheap and they didn’t even come with side salads/ chips / onion rings which you would expect for the price. Ordered a coffee and it was really watery and gross. The vibe has completely changed in there and it now feels a lot more like a Wetherspoons. Too crowded, not enough staff, loud, bad food. Not nice cosy pub vibes with amazing food as before. Go next door to the Green Man, it’s much nicer.

Staff were friendly and the atmosphere was nice. However the roast dinner was flavourless and disappointing. Completely under seasoned, school dinner roast potatoes, dry overcooked meat. Veg was ok, but the side of cauliflower cheese was greasy and not very cheesy at all. Our drinks also came after our food arrived which wasn’t ideal, although obviously forgivable, but really what this meant was that although our food arrived quickly (a plus on a busy Sunday) it wasn’t very hot. The veggie squash salad however was nice. Staff friendly but hard to get their attention when wanting to order or pay. It’s totally inoffensive but I sadly feel it wasn’t worth the money and wouldn’t come again.

Visited the Red Lion today for the second time in last few months. Both times we have visited the food has been very good, can’t fault it. I can fault the service. Drinks terribly slow to arrive on both visits. Today our food arrived without two sides of fries we ordered, no apology or urgency to correct their mistake. When we finished eating we sat for 45 minutes with dirty plates in front of us, no offer of a dessert or our bill. Us and the table next to us had to flag down a member of staff to just get the bill and leave, completely oblivious that we were still there. As mentioned the food has been great both times, it’s the service that’s let us down. Especially as they add a 12.5% service charge to all bills…hardly worth it.

All 3 courses of my meal were inedible and, the rest of the party who had the cold weird looking turkey had food poisoning during the night! The low grade ingredients and weird mash up of things put together were really strange - mini jarred salad onions swimming in watery “gravy” isn’t onion gravy! More a health risk!! The whole meal was utterly disgusting and we deeply regret politely accepting it and leaving. We have made contact with you but you seem to care very little. Just happy to rip people off and offer low grade food with a chef that knows very little about cooking And, definitely doesn’t know what a Christmas dinner consists of despite the menu. - cold kale isn’t one of them! Chips are a relatively cheap plate filler, and an easy way to send home happy punters, however the kitchen managed to get this wrong. The chips portion was tiny, making the fish & chips incredibly overpriced for what was served on the plate. A chicken roast was also ordered, with a tiny chicken breast. Certainly under 100g. Again, this made the dish overpriced for what was served on the plate. No one has an issue paying £18-£25 for a meal, providing you serve adequate portions. Both failed on this occasion. A shame as the pub is beautiful, great staff and excellent service. But let down by the food.

We eventually got food at quarter to three. If you're busy then we would have been happy to have given you a pre order. We get it's Christmas, we get it's busy. Puddings were also slow. Had to ask three times for the bill. (Everyone had gone by then) The food when it came was great. I just wanted to snack on the Christmas dog treats whilst waiting.......... And learn how to cook first! Pomme Anna potato (think you need to go back to basics first) The venison must of been flashed in a hot pan and put straight onto the plate! Brown on the outside raw inside and still cold!! So tuff to cut and eat! As for the apple crumble artic roll! I have know words! The one single blackberry on the side! I always really liked the food at the Red Lion when we've gone in the past - it was ok, nothing to get too excited about. Service was good. Main issue is we were a table of 5 sat at a really tiny ill-placed table for 4 people max, very cramped, and up against a wall with a huge piece of artwork that jutted out onto the table. The place felt a bit more run down than last time we went, dirty, smelly, and toilets with huge cracks / holes round some kind of trap door (manhole cover?) in the floor which are both unsightly and a trip hazard.

Chronic food poisoning for two of our party (both from fish orders). Appalling local and central office response. Lovely building but they cram you in. Parking was terrible (a busy day when we went - sunny etc), cars just circling asking if you are leaving etc. Also, parking is run by a parking firm so need to be careful. If you do go, perhaps park further away and get an Uber is my view. I'd give it a miss personally.

A pretty and pleasant place. Love the old world charm and atmosphere. Well done for keeping these aspects alive and not modernising too much.

We visited for a Sunday roast and were not disappointed! Between the 5 of us we had each different type of roast and they were all lovely! Highly recommend :)

Incredibly disappointing. I'd only heard good things about the Red Lion but never been. I booked for a special family meal to enjoy the warm weather, and it didn't state anywhere that terrace seating didn't include table service. The entire surface of the table was incredibly sticky. Ordering at the bar was fine, but the person who put in our order didn't know how to order the starters to come first, so the bread came with our mains. When we were served, our roasts didn't include mint sauce and the server said it wasn't included. When we told her mint sauce was on the menu, she was surprised, but did end up coming back with it. The wait staff just seemed incredibly junior and lacking in knowledge; the amount we paid for the meals and the general reputation of the restaurant led me to believe that it would be a better experience. At least everyone agreed the food was good. I would not chance a family celebration on an unknown restaurant like this again. Definitely do not recommend.

I generally love and thus visit often the Red Lion. The service today was not good. The staff was bored, unhelpful and not polite. The range of cocktail drinks was limited which was rather disappointing for a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Lovely place for a family party. We had our daughter baptism here and was lovely. We had starters to share and the hummus was my favourite. We definitely recommend the Sunday roast for mains if you going there on Sunday. Nice park for kids in the back of the garden which the kids really enjoyed. Staff is friendly and helpful.

I was given pub vouchers to celebrate our wedding anniversary so I picked the Red lion to use them as they were listed on the pub tokens website. We told the staff when we arrived and were reassured it would be fine to use them. When it came to paying the bill the staff disappeared for ages and came back to tell us we could not use our vouchers. This ruined what was supposed to be a lovely treat. In contacting the pub I was informed ( after a month of waiting) that we should have been able to use them and could do so next time. This is not very useful and no goodwill gesture was mentioned whatsoever. The food was expensive but good however the place lacked atmosphere and the service was terrible. We were ignored for quite some time before we could even place a drinks order. I would not hurry back to The Red Lion.

Very good steak but need to review their care for gluten free customers: very restrictive app which is more about what you can't eat than what you can..only one starter and one dessert choice...even the ice cream was deemed not possible..very frustrating for a non-coeliac. There are apps I have used elsewhere which allow for traces of gluten for those who can tolerate them

The menu offered a fantastic selection of classic pub dishes, and everything we tried was spot on: fish pie, steak sandwich with fries and a knickerbocker glory to share., which was hearty and full of flavor. The portion size was generous, making it excellent value for money. To wash it down, we each had a half pint of one of the local ales. Which was the perfect complement to our meals. The service was quick, attentive, and friendly, adding to the overall great experience. Despite being busy, the staff made sure we had everything we needed and checked in on us at just the right moment.

Unwelcoming. Used to be a great place for a family drink and food. As soon as you walk in, you are made to feel unwelcome and uncomfortable by an empty soulless messy bar with empty glasses all over the place and a gruff manager asking you to state your business. Not exactly a comfort. Long wait at the bar. If you want any bar snacks you have to wait at the bar whilst they are being cooked, amongst the stacks of dirty dishes and glasses. Mocktail was out a can at £9.50 and disgusting and we stood at the empty bar for ten minutes as the single rather rude bar staff was busy doing table orders. Good job nobody else was waiting to be served. Clearly going in for a drink is considered beneath their dignity - you have to have a meal. Don’t think I’ll be going back after ten years of patronage. The play area in the garden is good, but throwing old metal ovens into the garden isn’t really good for the safety of free roaming toddlers. This was their last chance. Turned an amazing place into somewhere really quite horrible

A very pleasant, quite large pub restaurant in the delightful tourist venue that is Grantchester. Staff are very attentive, and we were asked about allergies. Note there is a 12.5% service charge, noted in small print at foot of the menu. Our club sandwiches were well filled, and made with sourdough bread, so all good. However the chips to share was a really very small portion, tempting me to work our the price per chip - around 10-15p I reckon. The meal in the photo, with a pint of Eatrella and a half of cider, came in just short of £42.

Not welcoming at all. Tired decor and furniture. We were told to move and sit on the grass because the table we sat at was for food only. No reserved signs were used. Staff hadn't got a clue. Ended up sitting on an unsafe rotten picnic table. Don't make you day a miserable one by visiting here.

A lovely spot for lunch. Plenty of helpful staff that smile and try to make your stay as pleasant as possible. We visited during a very busy time and yet the service was quick and efficient. The place was clean and dominated a perfect spot with views over the river. They have a carpark with cameras, make sure you give them your vehicle reg or you will be fined!! Thank you, will visit again.

Get a new chef! This place has been drifting for a while; but now it’s deteriorated badly. Pleasant service but poor on accuracy and timeliness. But, for a gastronomic-pub, someone really needs to check the chef’s head - the menu’s a mess, self-indulgent (chicken liver profiteroles, anyone? Yes, we tried them, an no, they weren’t any good.), and yet despite the chef’s over-ambitious fancy, the food is inadequately seasoned and not actually tasty. Pity.

It remains a lovely spot, and the amount of care managements and staff put into caring about allergies and food sensitivities is extraordinary. Not only that, but they take the time to talk to customers and explain even on busy days. Service was also very punctual and very pleasant. I don't think I have seen such extraordiinary levels of client service in any restaurant anywhere. What a brilliant team! Inspiring! Take your company for a team-building day and see how it is done!

We went for Sunday roast for my wife's birthday based on good reviews and knowing the setting. Pretty much all of the food that came to the table was subpar. Dried out cabbage, soggy potatoes, chewy overcooked beef and pork, watery carrot/swede mash, wet battered fish. The chips with the fish were actually quite good and not all of the yorkshires were like shrapnel. Sunday roasts are a mainstay of British pubs...I don't understand how this one went so wrong! We were booked in for 12:30 so it's not like we should have been at the tail end of the lunch period getting the long-time heat lamped dregs.

Came for the breakfast and then to shop. Sadly breakfast was not up to the usual standard. The cafe wasn’t busy. Ordered Full English with fried eggs for me and an American Pancake breakfast for my wife. It took 20 mins for them to tell us they had no pancakes so this was switched to a second Full English with scrambled eggs for wife, so far so good. This alternative breakfast then turned up 15 mins later but not my original Full English, I had to wait another nearly 10 for that. Sadly it seemed rushed, the bacon was barely cooked and the sausages literally cooked one side only and I had no black pudding but did have an extra mushroom! I recon I got somebody else’s order. To add insult they then brought what looked like my nicely cooked breakfast to a table nearby 5 mins later! I didnt eat everything on my plate which never happens when presented with a good Full English. There must have been a breakdown in communication somewhere. I’m sure this was just a blip and they will know how to fix it.
