Great setting. Elegant dining room. But let down by slow service - one hour wait for food to be served - menu inaccurate, food appeared to have been kept warm in kitchen for too long, not good quality ingredients. For that quality overpriced.

Where do I start! My husband and I were looking forward to afternoon tea at the Orangery restaurant, after perusing the menu online beforehand it sounded quite nice. When we arrived we were greeted and shown to our table, the place was almost empty, with only one more couple there. We were asked if we’d like tea or coffee, this came out after 5 minutes. The wobbly cake stand with the very sparse amount of sandwiches and selection of cakes came out much later and our teapot was nice and empty by this time! We weren’t offered a refill and tried in vain to get the attention of the waitress who was extremely busy chatting to the other couple about house prices for about 10 minutes. She noticed my husband waving his arms in desperation to get her attention and completely ignored him 4 times! Eventually she managed to fetch us another pot then took the rest of our milk away whilst she refilled it in the kitchen. I thought we were going to die of thirst! The sandwiches we received were not the ones advertised online. We were given plain ham, cheese and pickle, egg mayonnaise and salmon. Where were the watercress, horseradish, cress etc and the coronation chicken? 4 small fingers of basic sandwiches each…. Not enough and I could have made these at home! The scones weren’t warmed and the cakes bore no resemblance to the menu whatsoever! Where were the mango tarts, Victoria sandwiches, pistachio macarons? We received, very dry coffee and lemon cake, chocolate cake and chocolate macaron. Not very inspiring at all for the hefty £21.95 per head price tag! We couldn’t eat a lot of it as it was that rubbish! We did think we might get chance to take the rest home for the kids, but after waiting another 15 minutes to get any attention we gave up and left. As we stepped out of the door the waitress shouted across the room to us to see if we wanted to take the rest home. We said we would have if she had bothered to ask us 15 minutes earlier. Overall a dreadful experience, zero customer service, very inattentive staff, please don’t waste your hard earned cash on this place. Whilst we were there we looked at reviews on trip advisor and see that many people have complained. Short replies have been added by the Orangery saying that they have taken note of the comments, yet absolutely nothing has been done about any of it! We won’t be returning!

Asked for a table of 4 hadn't booked was very welcoming. 2 friends was running late so we just looked at menus. Friends arrived we ordered 4 drinks which quite honestly we thought they'd gone to France to get the wine. We ordered 4 starters with 3 side salads and bowl of chips. Eventually 3 starters came I waited longer for a cold starter no side salads no chips. I said we ordered side salads waitress said no problem won't take a minute to to prepare you one. Chips came with a bowl of mixed leaves which i don't call a side salad £4.50p. We had all eaten our food a waiter came with 1 bowl of salad told him to take it back we had eaten. No one asked us if we wanted sauces or vinegar we had to ask. We all had coffees drinkable but warm not hot. We complained they took 15% of the bill but spoiled what could have been a lovely lunch. Certainly won't be returning the hospitality and service definitely needs addressing.

Visited one Saturday afternoon with a friend for afternoon tea. The Orangery is located in a historic building that’s beautiful inside & out. The restaurant itself is lovely, great decor & ambience. The staff were very friendly & welcoming. Afternoon tea itself was lovely; delicious warm scones, tons of clotted cream and a tasty selection of deserts. All I would say is that 3 very small fingers sandwiches isn’t quite enough & so the savoury side was lacking slightly. You do get a small slice of sausage roll though. For £44 for one tier, I’d expect a couple more sandwiches. Overall though, a very lovely place & enjoyable afternoon tea.

Dear oh dear . Worst , most overdressed salad I have had in ages , totally overpowered by too much anchovy . My husband ate it but then he would eat anything as he was starving Lol. Dared to comment and a very sweet waitress offered to sort out a refund, however , both she and the equally pleasant receptionist were overruled by the overbearing and really un customer friendly restaurant manageress who barked at us ‘nothing wrong with it and just pay’ and then chased us to reception to interrupted a conversation, which was nothing to do with her at that point, in order to advise us that we should be grateful that she had ‘accommodated’ us in her empty restaurant in the first place without a booking. Hahaha. All very unprofessional and really Faulty Towers behaviour. Not the best way to represent an establishment. Maybe a bit more customer service training might help. Overall do yourself a favour and AVOID !! Average food at best ( it was virtually empty on a Saturday lunchtime which tells you everything you need to know ) , no atmosphere and an unpleasant experience. Oh and she insisted that the waitress had never said she would adjust the bill , although she certainly did. Maybe the sweet gurl changed her story under interrogation through fear? All very unsavoury.

Visited here last night for dinner. Worth noting we understand the last dinner reservation is 7.30pm as the kitchen usually closes at 9pm? Anyway this time worked for us. The restaurant wasn’t busy and is beautifully decorated. The food was fabulous and the staff are equally as wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble and the kitchen prepared a sauce for the steak which wasn’t even on the menu. Would highly recommend.

Absolutely fantastic venue for my Hen do on 3rd September. Zoe and her team made it so memorable and nothing was too much to ask. We hired the full restaurant as the private dining option with Prosecco drinks reception. Everyone enjoyed themselves and commented on how beautiful the venue was and the food was incredible 🥂 Highly recommended booking for food but also a lovely venue to host an event such as a hen do or baby shower. We were even allowed to decorate the room and they set up the tables for us as per a seating plan which was a lovely touch. Thankyou so much Zoe and the team. Cannot wait to revisit 🤍

We booked for a party of three, we know the location and viewed the pictures on line..What we received was really disappointing , it did not resemble the photos in any way, except for the stand it was delivered on, the minuscule finger sandwiches were a little dry, three fingers per person..The scones were fresh warm and good…There was a mini type meringue with strawberries and a minute piece of millionaires shortcake..Along with an Enormous lemon posset that was easier to drink than eat with a spoon……. nice location, but sorry this cream tea was just a very average plate of cakes and sandwiches.

Yesterday we visited the Orangery and had a fantastic afternoon tea. Mine was gluten free and my friend had a normal one. All the cakes were gluten free, my friend just had a scone that wasn’t. She said the cakes were lovely and she wouldn’t have known that they were gf. After trying so many different places for a gluten free afternoon tea, it was great to find a really good one and just proves that it can be done. I would highly recommend it and at £18.95 it wasn’t overpriced.

A friend went for afternoon tea . The afternoon tea was absolutely rubbish . Not a very good selection of sandwiches or cakes , a tiny pork pie and a dried out piece of quiche . The staff never seemed to be around . I wish we had complained at the time but sadly we didn’t . Although I did write a review on their FB page and received a short message back . All in all they weren’t really bothered. Needless say I wouldn’t recommend this place to anybody and certainly won’t be returning. The disappointing experience also cost us £17.99 each .

We were passing by and called for lunch, order food which came in a reasonable time. My order was sausage and mash, very nice. My wife had mushroom risotto. It came like a soup when the waitress asked how our food was I said mine was nice, the wife said she had never had a risotto that was so watery. Tha waitress said I will inform the chef nothing else said or done. I tasted my wife’s meal it was awful. When we went to pay the bar staff asked how our food was, I replied mine was nice but the wife’s had a very slight taste of cream plus what was a food thickener. The reply was we will tell the chef. We are both pensioners, but the people in the orangery were elderly by our standards. So the staff can fob them off.

At £17.95 per head for afternoon tea this was nothing special , in fact our party of 6 left feeling we had been ripped off. The sandwiches after quite a long wait were non descript and not many of them , the scones were burnt and crunchy , the cakes were nothing special , the "Christmas cake " was just fruit cake , it had no marzipan or icing but we were told it was Christmas cake. Yes the tea or coffee was refreshed on request but a tea bag and hot water hardly cost a fortune do they ? We would not go again especially when further down the road in Rowsley you can get a fabulous tea for a couple of pounds more at a well renowned hotel and wedding venue. Disappointing to say the least.

I wish I had said something at the time but we were treating my aunt and I did not want to spoil the occasion. I had the risotto and my husband had the gammon. The risotto was just not value for money and very ordinary. My husband was not impressed with his meal - gammon dry and chips and peas luke warm. I was still hungry after my risotto so opted for summer pudding for dessert and quite frankly I don't know why I ate it - it was so stodgy. I felt so sickly after eating that we skipped coffee. As I said we have eaten here before and I think that one is better opting for a lighter lunch such as omelette or quiche. I don't think the main courses are as good to eat or value for money. Sadly we would think twice before returning as there are plenty of eateries serving good quality food which is a shame. It annoys me that we paid such a lot of money for poor food though I still enjoyed the surroundings!

We lunched here on Monday this week with our relatives who live in the retirement village on-site. The restaurant is open to non residents but you probably wouldn't be aware unless you read TripAdvisor. The dining room and bars are very tastefully decorated and furnished, tables spaciously separated which adds to the general ambiance. The food was excellent. I had the wild mushroom risotto followed by the 'taste of chocolate' dessert consisting milk chocolate delice, chocolate fondant, cocoa tonka truffle and white chocolate ice-cream. The chocolate fondant was perfectly cooked, exceptional even. Others in the party had scampi and chips, catch of the day and summer pudding which was also excellent. Will definitely be visiting our relatives again if only to dine at this excellent venue!

Had a lovely meal here on one of their themed 'Tapas' evenings. The portion sizes were good and the food was delicious. The halloumi and potatoes were my favourites. We're going to keep our eye out for another themed night and try and make it a regular place to visit. The staff were all nice and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The restaurant itself is so elegant and even though it was busy with other tables we were served efficiently and checked upon regularly by the staff. Can't wait to return!

Myself and a group of friends went to the Tapas night after a recommendation. It was lovely food, a good selection to choose from and the portion size was perfect, my favourite was the halloumi and the lemon posset dessert. The staff were very friendly and attentive a special mention to Zoe and Rachael who are amazing at their jobs. The decor in the whole building is beautifully done. Will definitely visit again.

Excellent food and service once again at the orangery... Tender joints off meat accompanied with a great selection of vegetables, giant yorkshire puddings and rich gravy. The desserts were tasty and looked a picture. We look forward to our next visit in the near future

At the end of July, our party of 6 attended the Sunday carvery, 3 of whom ordered the roast beef. All those in the party had either 2 or 3 courses and whilst the starters and desserts were nice enough (but nothing special) the same cannot be said for the main course.None of the diners enjoyed their beef, it was tough and I thought it to be a very poor cut as it contained too much fat and gristle making a lot of it inedible. Additionally all the accompanying vegetables were cold and had clearly been sitting on the "hot" plate far to long and were drying out. The only hot item was the gravy! Our concerns were made known to the waitress who replied that no one else had complained that day. It does not matter if anyone else did or did not, we were unhappy with the meal and that is what is important, a point that the staff seem (or choose) to miss.I have eaten there with family on several occasions and find the quality of food served to be very hit and miss, certainly not good value for money. I would add that my wife is vegetarian and the menu choice for a vegetarian is very limited.

A perfect setting for a family night out where we enjoyed suburb food and excellent service. The contemporary surroundings complimented the menu. Once the starters were consumed the highlight for the adults was the catch of the day. The children enjoyed the steak and the gammon which left them little room for dessert. The service from the staff was attentive and made our night, the food and drink was excellent value for money,. If you happen to be in the area do make a booking you will not be disappointed.

Came here one Saturday evening with my partner and again I was so impressed by the food and service. It was a special evening (tapas) and the food was to die for! We shared 6 dishes between us and a bottle of wine! The service we received from the welcome right through till the end was wonderful, we were made to feel very welcome and the comfy chairs definitely helped us relax!

Ate here twice during a stay in Derbyshire. The restaurant is very comfortable, with great service and a good range of choices on the menu. The food was well cooked and presented. A gluten free diet was not a problem at all even without prior warning. A lovely place to eat.

We were so privilaged to have eaten here and had the recommendation. Our waiter was charming and made our first anniversay so special, a magical touch of old school service. It was just perfect, could not have asked for anoything more. A magical experience of romance and a perfect cosy and private table, like fine dining without all the snobbery. We had an amazing view in amazing chairs and they accepted us gracefully in our walking gear. I loved the bookcase wallpaper in the loo's. The food was fantastic and the waiter could not have been more helpful. Catered for my husbands gluten free diet beautifully and the sorbet to finish was a dream. Wonderful establishment.

I’ve been here with colleagues on a number of occasions and have found it to be a bit hit and miss. Unfortunately, the last few occasions really have been more miss than hit. We, being a group of seven, visited for lunch in the run up to Christmas and it was particularly disappointing. We were seated at a table with no table decorations, service was slow (there seemed to be insufficient staff), portion sizes were very much on the small side and the food was not overly hot. Surprisingly, there was no offer of any bread, even though the soup starter was supposed to be accompanied by freshly baked bread, and there was no cranberry sauce on the table. There was just one type of gravy, irrespective of whether the main course was turkey or beef. The desserts were little better with tiny portions of Christmas pudding that definitely did not look to be homemade. At £25 for three courses it wasn’t cheap. A few months prior to our Christmas meal, a few of us had eaten at The Orangery and were so disappointed that we wanted to cancel our Christmas booking. However, we were told that we couldn’t cancel but, as a goodwill gesture, two of us were invited back for complimentary main course. On that occasion, the food and service was good and we left feeling reassured about our Christmas booking.More recently, however, a friend and I met for a light lunch and, yet again the food fell short of our expectations. I find it difficult to excuse an omelette not being hot when it is served and having to go back to the kitchen to be warmed up / replaced. Sticking with the theme of temperature, our coffees were only lukewarm. There is too much that needs putting right here and, with three out of the last four meals being such a disappointment, I won’t be going again.

We were staying at a near by bed and breakfast who had recommended this bistro. Very nice place - the last orders are at 19.30 though so it's not a place to eat late. Friendly service, nice food and in very pretty surroundings.

Drove past the place a couple of weeks ago with my friend and decided it would be worth a visit, how right we were. There is an excellent selection of menu choices at a range of prices, staff very helpful and friendly, nice feel about the place. Had a thoroughly enjoyable relaxed lunchtime, with excellent food.

Lovely welcoming afternoon tea. The Orangery is a beautiful place to eat. The staff were lovely. Lovely sandwiches and a stunning display of deserts. Endless tea and coffee were provided. More sandwiches were offered but perhaps they should have been offered at the beginning. Apart from that a wonderful experience. Lovely ambiance.

I couldn't fault the food but the service not as good as previous visits. Our waitress was new in the job and obviously was not trained properly. Also the management should have better Customer care. The Orangery rang us on the morning of our lunch to let us know that there was an event taking place and there would be people moving tables around asking 'did we mind?'.We said we didn't activity taking place and so did not cancel the lunch - what a mistake. After our mains we were asked if we would move into the Bistro area for Desserts and coffee. This we didn't expect as the impression was that we would finish our meal in the restaurant. There was no option but to move and we were offered free coffees as recompense !!!I don't like lukewarm coffee but this was what we were served. Admittedly they were replaced but the whole experience has made up my mind not to use this restaurant in future.

The food was dreadful and expensive. Can’t say it any plainer. Schnitzel was burnt and poorly presented. Pasted was soggy. The very worst was the waffles which had been microwaved and were solid! Just the two us for a birthday meal with one drink each and it cost £91!
