Nice, sprawling café by the side of the popular walking and cycling Monsal Trail. Cakes, hot drinks, pizza and beer all served both inside and outside even in the rain.

Location good. Shop ok for gifts - especially if you like soap! Service in the café was fast, food and drink selecting good. Nice big pot of tea for 2 allowed for 2 ½ cups each. Accessible toilet was fine. Negative : Both crockery and cutlery not clean enough - plate sticky underneath, good stuck to inside of both cups, cutlery streaky and wet. No napkins.

A port in a storm is how I can describe this establishment. The trail toilets are disgusting, to say the least, good job. I am a bloke as anyone wanting to sit down would not go here. The next moan is the service. We ordered a couple of coffees and a hot pork cob, the coffee came about 15 mins from ordering. Then we waited and waited for the food, finished our drinks, and was just going to see where the food was 50 mins from ordering, and it turned up!! got TBF, it was nice, but why so long to pop already cooked pork on a cob? No explanation, no signs put up, and no apology from the staff. Sorry, but it's going to be a storm that blows me back here.

Awful all round - after over an hour of waiting for food with two hangry children we asked for a refund. The kitchen is far too small for the size of the cafe and number of customers, and the staff are glacially slow. Apparently they don't bother telling customers the wait is so long, in case they go elsewhere. 🤨

Ordered a kids burger which after an hours wait, the burger finally arrived but can only be described as cremated, bitter and mishapen. When we complained, the same burger came back but with a corner cut off it to make it look more round. The photo shows the second attempt at the burger. When we complained again we were told this how the burgers are (burnt and bitter). The waitress offered an alternative so my son agreed a cheese toastie would be acceptable. Unfortunately, this came which clearly hadn't been cooked properly and barely resembled a cheese toastie. The only bit our son enjoyed as the raw carrots!

This is a sad story... Years ago, Hassop's railway station was very imaginatively converted into a cafe and shop. It sits on the Monsal Trail which follows the old railway line. We have been going there most summers since the early days, then the cafe provided good simple refreshments for walkers. Year by year, the style has become increasingly up-market (= pretentious) and the fare has become increasingly disappointing. After this latest visit I'll be surprised if we ever go again. I'll get to the awful cheese scones in a moment. To start with, the system is incredibly bureaucratic and inflexible. There's lots of informal seating outside, you order and pay at the counter. But you cannot just buy a coffee, wander out and find somewhere nice to sit, the till won't allow it. You have to quote a table number. 'It's strictly table service only.' So you go back outside, find a table, take note of the number, hope that nobody else bags it, and go in to order and pay. And sure enough, your order is served to your table. But the food comes without the necessary cutlery, you are told to go back inside and collect that yourself. What precisely is the point of serving you a scone and butter but refusing to bring you a knife to spread it? It's idiotic. And then the refreshments. A speciality tea was fine, you can't go far wrong with that. Coffee was OK although it left a metallic aftertaste. But the cheese scones – in a long life devoted to cheese scones (among other things), these were definitely the worst we have ever experienced. They weren't on display, we ordered blind – if we had seen them we would have known better. They were enormous, strangely dark and shiny – they looked like cannon balls, and indeed the weight and consistency would have suited that purpose. Two big mistakes. There was too much liquid in the mix, and the scones were cut way too big. So they had no chance of cooking through evenly. As a result the interior was dense, soggy and doughy. What we managed to eat sank like lead in the stomach. They tasted of herbs, which is fine. They didn't taste of cheese, despite the lurid orange colour and toasted crust. Plus they had been microwaved, which we didn't ask for, so the surface was damp with condensation. Hassop, please take a few words of advice, offered in friendship. Try alternative recipes, pretty well anything else should be better, it couldn't be worse. Use less liquid, you only need enough to bind the mixture loosely. Use a good, mature white cheddar. Don't use coloured cheese or food colouring, it just looks tacky. Cut the scones much smaller so that they will cook evenly. And don't microwave them if it hasn't been requested.

Hassop Station Cafe and shops are a great location on the beautiful Monsal Trail. The old station itself is a beautiful large building that has been converted into a large indoor cafe with extensive outdoor seating, lots of it undercover for times when the weather is less than ideal. Attached is a bike repair and hire shop for the trail, which attracts lots of people to walk and ride along the beautiful car free trail. The Station also offers a wood-fired pizza horse-box van that does reasonably priced and delicious pizzas. The surrounding area is absolutely stunning and less than a 10 minute drive from Bakewell but also close to Buxton and has a nearby bus stop on the Peak Bus route which allows bikes. This can get very busy at weekends and bank holidays etc and toilets are limited so ideally visit midweek or be warned.

This is our regular 'drink and toilet' stop on the Monsal Trail walk. We used to really like it back in pre-covid days but it seems to have gone downhill in terms of quality of food and hygiene. So... The coffee is nice but the service is often VERY slow. The food is ok-ish yet the prices are quite high for what is offered. On our most recent visit we had 'buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup' (3 very small very flat and very dry and rubbery pancakes each slightly bigger than the tiny bowl the maple syrup was served in) and a toasted teacake (ok, but also petite).

We have been here numerous times following walks from Bakewell. The food is decent and about the same price as all these places. The staff that we have encountered never seem very friendly or bothered about about making it a memorable experience. We don't go for the staff though, but they really need to have more enthusiasm. I work in retail and fully appreciate that customers can be demanding and sometimes rude. I also agree with another poster that the toilets are rather shabby and need more frequent checking.

Route with several nice cafes (many gluten-free dishes such as Quakers restaurant and Hasselt station, both on the route). The stepping stones (walk about 1 hour, just Google it and you will find it, it is part of the route) is fun and also a beautiful route through nature. This walking route is less suitable for children up to 6 years old. Recommended!

The atmosphere was lovely, the staff were friendly and made us feel welcome, as did the bright surroundings and fresh sprays of daffodils on the tables. The food was amazing. Just squeezed in the last available car park space at 1130 on an Easter holiday Friday. Good quality breakfast (only served till noon which I always find odd, make it “all day breakfast”!) a bit pricey at £11.50 for the small breakfast with toast but drink extra - expensive due to the lovely location l suppose. There were a couple of let downs- all the serve yourself cutlery looked more unwashed than washed and my toast was forgotten and had to be chased up. I’d already declined the presumptuous “add gratuity” on the card machine when paying up front and would have put some coins in the jar after eating if the service had actually been worth it. I’d still recommend stopping (or starting) here for a walk/run/cycle on the beautiful Monsal trail. The other oldie looked good and there’s an excellent cake counter and at peak times a wood fired pizza offering.

We visited here with 2 young kids for lunch on route back to Sheffield. We were early (11.30am) and easily able to find a table- there are lots of seating areas inside as well as outside (with heaters on). Firstly we couldn’t order lunch until officially 12pm.. that was fine, but we should really have had a breakfast as they looked very nice coming out of the kitchen. Our lunches were really poor.. I was very disappointed. The kids fish goujons were artificial and clearly from a freezer bag, the kids burger was better and chips ok. My adult fried chicken and Stilton sauce was really bad - a very small half chicken breast at best, again clearly from a freezer bag and not homemade, with a small portion of fries. Appreciate I had not just been on a 2hr hike but that would not have filled up anyone who had! The best bit of it was the side salad! And it cost £17! We later saw some roast sandwiches come out and they looked better, perhaps you need to choose those but we won’t be back so that doesn’t matter. Toilets the same as the other reviews- very smelly and dirty. Other issue was the parking- I didn’t notice the free parking area for cafe users and paid £1.50 for the pay and display car park.. that should be better signposted.

Not a single staff member apologised for the hour long wait for food which was very poor considering we had 3 young children at the table.
