Hassop Station Cafe & Monsal Trail Cycle Hire in Derbyshire Dales

Nice stop on my days out and about on the motorbike. Enjoy their bacon sandwiches and cakes with tea. One fly in the ointment, the begging for extra money during payment at counter service.

Great location. Monsal Trail right next to it. Lovely cafe, they do a great variety of breakfasts, which are included with the room price.

Beautiful cycle route, one way 14 km. You can rent a bicycle on both sides of the trail. Route with several nice cafes (many gluten-free dishes such as Quakers restaurant and Hasselt station, both on the route). The stepping stones (walk about 1 hour, just Google it and you will find it, it is part of the route) is fun and also a beautiful route through nature. This walking route is less suitable for children up to 6 years old. Recommended!

Great breakfast here on a rainy bank holiday Monday

Just been for morning brunch. Such a cheery place in spite of the Bank Holiday weather. The atmosphere was lovely, the staff were friendly and made us feel welcome, as did the bright surroundings and fresh sprays of daffodils on the tables. The food was amazing. We had the full English, salmon and poached eggs on sourdough toast and a children's beans in toast. The accompanying drinks were hot which is always a plus! The shop was more expensive than I remember from previous visits but nice to browse around. A really positive experience. Thanks to all concerned.

Free parking for 2 hours for customers. If you need more time, there is a pay and display park in the same site. £5.50 all day. £4.50 for 4 hours.

Brilliant for a bike ride with kids, beautiful scenery. Lots to see. Lovely cafe or just stop somewhere for a picnic along the trail.

Great find at the perfect time on the trail too we were all flagging! Just a pity about the toilets, end of the day but they were a bit of a mess & smelly. Made me smile though, there was someone outside sweeping the paths and the toilets were desperate!

Great location and always good food..

Initial service was good. But when I was adding milk to my coffee I knocked over some stacks of plastic cups that are precariously placed and not balanced well at all, which went on the floor. They looked st me a bit gone out, but if you don't want it to happen you wouldn't put them right there in such a way.

Total rip off £16 for a chicken ceasar wrap. Save your money and keep driving a couple of miles into Bakewell where you will get a lot more choice and better value for money. Try The Ginger Butchers if you want some great food at reasonable prices.

Car park sells tickets until 6pm, and says on parking machine signs that it closes at 6pm - but it turns out they lock the gates at 5:15pm after the cafe closes. The staff say the signs saying 6pm are a “mistake”.

Just squeezed in the last available car park space at 1130 on an Easter holiday Friday. Good quality breakfast (only served till noon which I always find odd, make it “all day breakfast”!) a bit pricey at £11.50 for the small breakfast with toast but drink extra - expensive due to the lovely location l suppose. There were a couple of let downs- all the serve yourself cutlery looked more unwashed than washed and my toast was forgotten and had to be chased up. I’d already declined the presumptuous “add gratuity” on the card machine when paying up front and would have put some coins in the jar after eating if the service had actually been worth it. I’d still recommend stopping (or starting) here for a walk/run/cycle on the beautiful Monsal trail. The other oldie looked good and there’s an excellent cake counter and at peak times a wood fired pizza offering.

Nice walk from great longstone to Bakewell stopped here halfway for a brew n sosage roll on the Monsal trail. Nice flat walk . Food was yummy 😁👍

Great place for hiring bikes/setting off on the trail and lovely cafe if you need a pit stop

I took the family for a bike ride up Monsal trail. We rented bikes. They have a huge stock so I wouldn't be concerned with pre-booking. The staff were quick and helpful. Got us sorted and off we went. We chose to have our meal half way at millersdale. There is a smaller cafe there. Easy half day with the kids. Some gorgeous view points.

Food was excellent in the cafe but car park as usual was full to capacity. Lovely place but wish cyclists would be more accommodating to walkers and go at a slower speed

Delicious food but very expensive

What a wonderful place to discover, we started walking the Monsal trail in Bakewell,& this place is a couple of miles-ish along the walk, the food is lovely, really well cooked, the staff are very friendly, order at the counter & tell them table number,& food is brought out to you. A lovely gift shop, with everything from jelly cat cuddly toys to soap,& books, plants,& more, there are 2 lots of toilets in the restaurant. There is bike hire £18 for 2 hours, not electric bikes, definitely recommend this as a place to stop for a break on your walk, we already know we will be going back,& taking our fold up bikes with us, so we can go further, busy today, queue nearly to the door for ordering .food & drinks,about 1pm, but went down fairly quickly, 2 people on the tills, very accommodating as well, had my cranberry sauce & stuffing on the side instead of in the sandwich as advertised, highly recommend for somewhere a bit different for a pit stop.

Breakfast before the Monsal Trail. Eggs Benedict and Sausage, caramelised onion and cheese toastie. Eggs Benedict was perfect. Creamy hollandaise sauce with the best poached eggs on top of sourdough bread that had a really pleasant chew to it. Sausage, cheese and caramelised onion toastie was also delicious.

Super friendly place with great coffee, cakes and sit down food, right where you need it for the trail to ride your bike or walk the dog. All in a beautiful location. Love it!

Cafe only open at weekends in winter,bike hire open all year round.good start for off rd safe cycling along the tissington trail,would be a good day out for the family.

The food at the cafe is amazing and great service too the pizzas from the pizza truck outside are also very good! We also hired bikes which was a very easy process and they were very helpful.

Great car park with lots of spaces. Old station has been turned into a lovely cafe & shop. Outdoors is a kiddies play area outside coffee hut, lots of tables & both normal & electric bikes can be hired. Situated right next to the Monsail Trail. Highly recommend a visit.

Lovely cafe and the food is delicious

A great pitstop at the end of our walk. We shared a pot of tea and had an iced ginger biscuit each. One star knocked off as there was no sugar offered for the tea. Dog friendly with plenty of room to sit inside and outside. It was a glorious day for March so we sat in the garden.

Really good bikes to hire, easy process and a lovely cafe for afterwards. Would definitely visit again.

Huge selection of cakes and treats - absolutely delicious! Including some GF options, which was very useful for our group. Great coffee. Loads of space, baby and dog friendly (I don't know about inside - we sat outside). Great location if you're having a walk in the area. I wish I could come back and try more of those cakes...

At this place there is plenty of room to sit and enjoy some very nice food. There is a pizza van where you can order fresh pizzas. We had one of these and it was great. The guy who served us was really cheerful and chatty. There is seating outside that is undercover. We ate in the cafe on a separate occasion and were not disappointed with the food. The service was ok but I did feel that some of the staff were less cheerful than they could have been.

Lovely place to rest, eat, drink and shop between walks! We love it and visit regularly.

So knowledgeable and went the extra mile to provide us with puncture repair kit, backpack, phone holder etc - which we didn’t even have to ask for! Their knowledge of the routes and the area is amazing & you can see the genuine care for their customers. They even fixed the gears on one of our own bikes - we will definitely be using you guys again! Thank you so much!

Great pizza van The best pizza I've had for a long time

Veggie sausage and egg cob. Sausages (linda mccartney style) incinerated like twigs. Dehydrated through overcooking and shrivelled to pencils. Transparent uncooked egg white. Unbuttered dry cob. Tasted like the person who made it hates food or hates people. I think both. Tasted of hostility and resentment.

We stopped here for a drink and snack as we’d been hiking the trail. Wonderful little place with such an extensive and tasty menu. Loads of pretty things to buy as well, the rose cream was amazing. Happy we stopped!

Cold. Decent food & a reasonable vegetarian selection but the room was very cold. If you’ve come in chilly you’re unlikely to warm up here. We had to put out coats back on. Won’t visit again until summer.

Hassop cafe is just the best to sit down and enjoy some nice grub after a nice walk along monsal trail.

Walking the Monsal Trail and stopped for a cuppa. We had tea for two, cake to share and a pizza. Pizza was nice but a little overcooked. There was a huge collection of cakes and the slice we bought was large. Tea for two gave us two cups each which was adequate. The attached shop was lovely. The toilets were not in a good condition.

We’ve stayed at the b&b nearby and always enjoyed the breakfasts at the tearooms - which are a brilliant bonus to a warm and cosy room. This time we popped in for an early lunch which was excellent, lots of choice and staff all helpful with allergy requirements. Couldn’t fault, will be coming back again soon.

We visited here with 2 young kids for lunch on route back to Sheffield. We were early (11.30am) and easily able to find a table- there are lots of seating areas inside as well as outside (with heaters on). Firstly we couldn’t order lunch until officially 12pm.. that was fine, but we should really have had a breakfast as they looked very nice coming out of the kitchen. Our lunches were really poor.. I was very disappointed. The kids fish goujons were artificial and clearly from a freezer bag, the kids burger was better and chips ok. My adult fried chicken and Stilton sauce was really bad - a very small half chicken breast at best, again clearly from a freezer bag and not homemade, with a small portion of fries. Appreciate I had not just been on a 2hr hike but that would not have filled up anyone who had! The best bit of it was the side salad! And it cost £17! We later saw some roast sandwiches come out and they looked better, perhaps you need to choose those but we won’t be back so that doesn’t matter. Toilets the same as the other reviews- very smelly and dirty. Other issue was the parking- I didn’t notice the free parking area for cafe users and paid £1.50 for the pay and display car park.. that should be better signposted.

We are local to Hassop, so decided to take our family who were at ours for christmas, the service was actually shocking, not a single smile, all looked throughly miserable. Not a single staff member apologised for the hour long wait for food which was very poor considering we had 3 young children at the table. When the food came out nobody knew what they were even giving out, as someone who’s a waitress myself I was actually appalled. The food was average at best but good location but improvement needed.

Having arrived for breakfast we found the service and breakfast to be agreeable, however the toilet facilities were an absolute disgrace. Dirty, smelly and toilet seats hanging off and not working or flushing. We visited at 10am in the morning - so no excuse for the state they were found in.

Great cafe, with lots of choice, friendly staff. There was plenty of room to sit indoors or even outside as we did under the heaters, which was really cosy and warm even on a cold day.

The staff we spoke to were polite but unfortunately we had to complain. We only had a pot of tea for two and a cake. We had to wait a while. The tea cups were dirty one of them had a tea stain ring and it looked like been rinsed under the tap to clean it. The cutlery in the trays was wet and some unclean. The teapot was dirty and was chipped in two places and as my wife said it wasn't fit for the bin. The toilets need a freshen up in fact the whole place does, shame because some of the staff were really polite. I don't know who owns this place but if you read this get some money spent on a refit because its ready.

Guy with the 2006 man bun, who I assume was the manager was unbelievably rude. It's also freezing in there. Never again - avoid at all costs.

Visited yesterday and did not have a good experience. Unisex toilets were not very clean. The roast beef sandwich was more like pulled pork and it took ages and some confusion for our drinks to arrive. The waiting staff were not very sharp at all...seemed to be in a daze. For the money this cafe is charging id expect better toilet facilities and much better service. I had to wait a while to get more cutlery as that had also run out, meanwhile my lunch was going cold All around it has put me off re visiting im afraid. Feel for the money there are way better options around.

Huge cafe menu, very popular and busy, but lots of inside and outside seating. Been twice recently as mid bike ride pit stops and the food I've had has been 11/10! Had the roast dinner panini first time, and then had to go back in December for the Christmas Dinner club sandwich on the festive menu. Absolutely massive, literally a turkey roast in a sandwich, with a boatload of gravy. Fueled me all the way home. Think the staff do an incredible great job on the food & facilities given how busy they are. Some of the bad reviews I think people don't consider just how hard it is for the staff to keep everything in absolutely perfect nick when they are so busy, and of course the food won't be ready immediately if it's rammed!

Amazed at all the recent negative reviews. I live fairly nearby and visit a few times a year. Have never had a bad meal. Six of us met there today for a short walk and then lunch. Hadn’t booked a table (big mistake near Christmas) but the manager/head chef (not sure??) very kindly managed to accommodate us at the time we requested. It was very busy and I expected queues and/or a long wait, but food and drinks were served within a reasonable time. The menu is huge with a great choice. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their orders (chicken broth, ploughman’s, steak pie, festive toastie…). Negatives are: It wasn’t overly warm in there, the toilets were just average to bit great. Tbh I didn’t check for cobwebs (as mentioned elsewhere), but it has very high ceilings so I’d think they’re inevitable. Can’t really say I’m too bothered either way. It’s an old train station, not a Michelin star restaurant. Couldn’t fault the service or the food. Looking forward to returning. Thanks once more for fitting us in.

Absolutely fabulous place to stay. The rooms were very comfortable, clean and tidy. The cafe was fabulous. Amazing breakfasts and traybakes. All of the staff were really welcoming and polite. We will be back!

A tasty soup & crunchy roll was just what I needed on a wintery afternoon

Great day cycling with daughter and Grandkids. Bike hire for all ages with helmets. The trail is long and fun the kids loved cycling through the railway tunnels.

Excellent food, service fast even on busy days

Great place, we stopped here after a cycle along the Monsal trail, and had the wood fired pizza that can be located outside. The pizza that we had is great, and there was also drinks and cakes for sale. I can’t comment on the cafe itself as we didn’t buy anything from there. Good during sunny weather, and the area is sheltered. I suspect maybe too cold during winter months, but there is there large indoor cafe too, plus a huge gift shop. Definitely worth a visit if you are there. The only slight downside is that the location of the toilets is very confusing. All signs point to two portaloos outside, which are actually just for general use for anyone walking / hiking the Monsal trail and more can be found inside - however again these aren’t the easiest to find.

A great location on the old railway 🛤 line. Great drinks and food. We hope to try the accommodation soon.

Pay for parking, £5.50 for 5 hours which isn't bad but the parking was rammed. Really nice bike trail through the tunnels. Cafe had friendly staff, ordered 5 drinks but as it was so busy I was waiting in the way of the free water refill. Next time I go I'm definitely having a cake.

Called in here for coffee and cake whilst some members of our party hired bikes to ride the Monsal trail. Lovely cafe with very friendly staff. We ended up staying for lunch when the rest of the family returned from their bike ride. Lovely area selling gifts, books etc. A section of the car park is free for 2 hours if using the cafe or shop and pay and display elsewhere for bike hire etc. Would call again if in the area.

Ordered the soup of the day, Tomato soup, not very tasty and overpriced. Worst of all, are the toilets , I have never experienced such an awful smell in a public toilet ever. Very dirty and of putting. We are staying next door in the rooms that include breakfast in the price at the cafe. I will be leaving early and skipping breakfast.

Friendly, professional staff and good service. I noticed there were quite a few orders that were incorrect, as was my own but they were rectified promptly. Food ok, it went cold quickly. Hygiene is an area that needs addressing, general clean needed. Staff seen running fingers through hair ?restyling, looked like it had gel on and then straight back to making the toast. Lots of face touching and then handling food and cups etc. My main worry was 3 members of staff went to the toilet with their aprons on! Could be a really nice place to go with a few adjustments.

Visited yesterday on a rainy Sunday. Very quiet inside. Large tables in main area were sticky, and I mean STICKY!! Moved to side room, room decor tired but ok. Staff not friendly or smiley, aprons dirty & creased. coffee and cake averaged £8 per head. Tray bakes ok, cake slices ok-ish, scone served with tiny ‘jar’ of cream, would’ve expected fresh, better quality & slightly larger portion. Coffees tasted nice. Worst part was the bathrooms!!! 😮 stinky, dirty and worn out! Extractor fan in cubicle absolutely covered in dust and dirt. I nearly spoke to a Manager but had the feeling no-one would care. Our last visit 18 months ago was brilliant, what has happened to this place?? So disappointed.

Very good. You can't escape car parking unless you park nearby as the car park records VRN. Cafe is overpriced but the trail is spot on. Great for families.

Absolutely fabulous food, you get what you pay for.

Disappointing visit this time to the cafe. Hope it improves as it's there for the people who visit the Monsal trail and not just to employ yourselves.
