Called in here for coffee and cake whilst some members of our party hired bikes to ride the Monsal trail. Lovely cafe with very friendly staff. We ended up staying for lunch when the rest of the family returned from their bike ride. Lovely area selling gifts, books etc. A section of the car park is free for 2 hours if using the cafe or shop and pay and display elsewhere for bike hire etc. Would call again if in the area.

Ordered the soup of the day, Tomato soup, not very tasty and overpriced. Worst of all, are the toilets , I have never experienced such an awful smell in a public toilet ever. Very dirty and of putting. We are staying next door in the rooms that include breakfast in the price at the cafe. I will be leaving early and skipping breakfast.

Friendly, professional staff and good service. I noticed there were quite a few orders that were incorrect, as was my own but they were rectified promptly. Food ok, it went cold quickly. Hygiene is an area that needs addressing, general clean needed. Staff seen running fingers through hair ?restyling, looked like it had gel on and then straight back to making the toast. Lots of face touching and then handling food and cups etc. My main worry was 3 members of staff went to the toilet with their aprons on! Could be a really nice place to go with a few adjustments.

Visited yesterday on a rainy Sunday. Very quiet inside. Large tables in main area were sticky, and I mean STICKY!! Moved to side room, room decor tired but ok. Staff not friendly or smiley, aprons dirty & creased. coffee and cake averaged £8 per head. Tray bakes ok, cake slices ok-ish, scone served with tiny ‘jar’ of cream, would’ve expected fresh, better quality & slightly larger portion. Coffees tasted nice. Worst part was the bathrooms!!! 😮 stinky, dirty and worn out! Extractor fan in cubicle absolutely covered in dust and dirt. I nearly spoke to a Manager but had the feeling no-one would care. Our last visit 18 months ago was brilliant, what has happened to this place?? So disappointed.

Great location at the start of the Monsal Trail. We hired cycles to bike up to the viaduct, enjoyed the fantastic view, and worked up an appetite. (But it's also a wonderful trail to walk). Then back to the station to return the bikes, and chilled for a while at the cafe. Treated ourselves to a bite to eat. Lovely food. Cheerful, friendly service from the staff. Good tea and coffee. A mixture of delicious cakes. And plenty for fans of 'savoury' too. We had a very tasty sausage and bacon bun (choice of white, granary or brioche!), and a sausage roll. Then washed it down with a pot of Yorkshire Tea, and a pot of Earl Grey. Lots of tables and seating (both inside and out). Everything clean and well kept. Toilets on site.

I’m a local, and I’ve been in hassop station a few times, but this is my first review. I just went in for coffee, no food (thankfully after I sat down and looked around) although what came out of the kitchen looked nice enough. Now, I understand that this is a place for walkers, with muddy boots and dogs, but it’s got to be said, this place is absolutely filthy! I’m not talking about a bit of mud on the floor from walkers boots, I’m talking about thick, black dust on the light fittings & cobwebs hanging from the ceilings, dirty, marked walls next to the tables you’re sat at kind of filthy. Months & months of neglect. The bottoms of table legs caked in dirt where the mop has swished past. The condiment table next to the counter is thick with dust and has cobwebs circling the legs! It was pretty busy when I went in, I counted 9 staff on the premises, all of which were friendly enough, but they all looked scruffy. The ‘uniform’ is jeans and t shirts, and all were wearing creased aprons. Such a shame, because it never used to be dirty. It feels like they know it doesn’t matter what it looks like, and charge a fortune because the tourists just keep coming. The whole place is in desperate need of a dam good clean, a lick of paint and an iron for the staff to use!

Very disappointed with the whole experience. We opted for takeaway pizza to eat in - a Pepperoni, Peppers & Mushrooms and The Meaty. Far too oily - my guess is far too much cheese and not enough of the toppings. They both could have done with another five minutes in the oven as the middles were soggy and the bases not cooked through. The staff looked fed up - not a smile between them. The saving grace was a decent bottle of wine at £18.

I had to ask three times for a fork as there were none and when i got one from a member of staff she was very sarcastic and scowling. Two other members of staff were also very grumpy as they went about their duties. The manager did apologise saying they had been busy over lunchtime but this is not the first time service has been poor. Not a good example for local customers and foreign visitors alike and the staff should remember that it is their job to be polite and provide an acceptable level of service. If the visitors didnt visit then the staff would have even less to smile about if the place closed. Food was acceptable when it finally arrived. Fingers crossed things will improve next time i decide to spend my hard earned money on acceptable food and a poor level of service.

So... The coffee is nice but the service is often VERY slow. The toilets are usually dirty and often out of loo rolls. The food is on the lower side of average yet the prices are not. On our most recent visit we had 'buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup' (3 very small very flat and very dry and rubbery pancakes each slightly bigger than the tiny bowl the maple syrup was served in) and a toasted teacake (ok, but also petite).

Absolutely outstanding! We visited Matlock Baths on what might be one of the busiest days of the year. We were ealking past this place when one of the team there was stood next to the A-board menu talking to people. Steak pie immediately caught my eye, the smaller meals ideal for the other adults and the kids meals looked ideal for our kids who don't eat very much. We waited about 20 mins whoch I think is perfectly resonable. The food came and was excellent. As we were leaving we asked who the restaurant is named after and was told it was Gary Charles. All in all, an excellent place, excellent team and excellent food. Brilliant.

Having first visited in May we decided to have lunch again as a family when I was in the area in October. We visited on a Wednesday afternoon and it wasn’t overly busy so nice and quiet to chat. Two of us picked the lasagne with a side of onion rings to share and the other meal was again the Hunter’s chicken. There was a bit of a wait for the meals to arrive but nobody minds waiting for freshly cooked food. Second time around and we were not disappointed as the high standards we enjoyed on our first visit were on display again. Piping hot, well presented and tasty lunches were thoroughly enjoyed but all three of us and the onion rings were excellent too. Clean plates all round and washed down with a nice pint and a lemon and lime. Walk off your lunch at Carsington which is just down the road! Really enjoyed our lunch so well done to all involved.

We went to Ostello Lounge early on a Tuesday evening for supper. It wasn't busy, the staff are friendly and the food was excellent. We had two chicken and avocado burgers and one vegan cheeseburger (although with real cheese as the diner is vegetarian, not vegan) and they were all excellent. We then had a toasted teacake, a chocolate and raspberry torte and a banoffee cheesecake, which were all very good (in the case of the cheesecake, which I had, it was excellent again). One of the party lives locally and said he will now be visiting regularly, and the other two will certainly be coming back next time we are in Matlock.
