The Rising Sun Inn Restaurant in Derbyshire Dales

Having first visited in May we decided to have lunch again as a family when I was in the area in October. We visited on a Wednesday afternoon and it wasn’t overly busy so nice and quiet to chat. Two of us picked the lasagne with a side of onion rings to share and the other meal was again the Hunter’s chicken. There was a bit of a wait for the meals to arrive but nobody minds waiting for freshly cooked food. Second time around and we were not disappointed as the high standards we enjoyed on our first visit were on display again. Piping hot, well presented and tasty lunches were thoroughly enjoyed but all three of us and the onion rings were excellent too. Clean plates all round and washed down with a nice pint and a lemon and lime. Walk off your lunch at Carsington which is just down the road! Really enjoyed our lunch so well done to all involved.

Stopped off for lunch. The surroundings were pleasant, and a fire had been lit. Good choice of drinks at the bar. Based on recommendations, we had the locally sourced pies ( Beef & Ale and Chicken) plenty of veg and gravy. All the food was served hot. Staff were great and service was faultless.

Stopped in Middleton for a long weekend. Went to the Risong Sun for dinner, food was lovely, home cooked local produce. Good selection of beers. Very friendly & welcoming

Fantastic traditional English country pub. Vegan burger excellent value,dog friendly and really friendly staff. Great location.

Nip in for a quick pint on the way home from Carsington water, very nice, will be back for food.

We visited here twice on Holiday in August. Very welcoming , great food and dog friendly.

We had an excellent Sunday Roast at lunchtime. It tasted excellent! The pub is very tastefully and authentically decorated. Unfortunately, the staff didn't seem particularly committed. Even on another weekday for an evening beer, we felt only moderately welcome.

Lovely place for a quiet meal. Went on a cold night but there was no heating on hence the 2 stars for atmosphere

We came here as a family with a young child and were slightly disappointed. The menus were rather limited and it was fairly standard "pub grub" when it arrived ie it felt like.it was out of a packet, though nice enough. There was also quite a bit of waiting to be served as the staff chatted to the locals. It was OK but not really recommended for tourists sadly.

Stopped here for dinner after a day walking in the peaks. one of the best meals we’ve had here. The food was freshly cooked and delicious, would definitely come back.

We visited this establishment as we read on their website the food was good - well after a busy day we were hungry- to be honest the food was cool to say the least and the egg kept repeating on me - the surroundings were old and grubby and through the bar you were falling over lots of dogs and the owners were more interested in their drinks than caring for their dogs - don’t think we will be visiting again

Absolutely brilliant place. Called as visiting family nearby and found a cosy pub with fantastic staff and superb food - the pies are exceptional with great veggie options and a good selection of beers - definitely recommend 🙂

We only had a couple of beers but both tasted watered down so we moved on and found much better beers.

Looking to find somewhere for lunch we came across the Rising Sun. There is car parking out front. The pub is very nice inside with several rooms, and plenty of seating. There is also an outdoor seating area. A good selection of beers - I tried the Derby Brewing Mercia IPA which was well kept and tasty. There is a good selection of pub food with the odd twist at a reasonable price. We tried the locally famous Steak and Ale pie with chips and vegetables, gravy, and an extra jug of gravy. It was absolutely delicious - one of the nicest pies I’ve had, and the rest of the meal was really good. I can’t comment on the atmosphere as the pub was fairly quiet, but it had a nice feel to it.

Chicken in bacon and Stilton was one of the nicest pub meals I've had in sometime... staff very friendly... I spent my childhood in Rise End and the sun has changed very much for the better.. highly recommended...

We have eaten here twice recently and we have enjoyed every bite of every meal.Every thing is freshly prepared and arrives piping hot.The fish pie is,quite simply superb,whilst the hunters chicken is the best I have EVER had.Good selection of beers and the young lady behind the bar,who we have seen on both occasions,is very pleasant and efficient. This establishment is not to be missed!

Great food, great service, we'll be back... Great food, most of our group at from the special menu for lunch, one had s noblvel double burger, all excellent. Dogs welcome. Great service, friendly publican who even said I could keep the musical Beaverbrook beer glass as it was my birthday. Good walks in the area, we have eaten here several times, always excellent , we'll be back...

This was the first time to dine at the Rising Sun for any of us although we have had a drink here in the past and have always had it on the list to try for food. We were in the area and decided to finally tick this pub off our list of places to try and we are very glad we did - what a fantastic meal we had. It was quite quiet for a Friday lunch time so had the pick of the tables and enjoyed nice pints of Welbeck and a lemon and lime whilst we perused the very comprehensive menu. A great selection to choose from including the good old favourites and a number of more interesting / unusual dishes. We each picked something different and whilst there was a bit of a wait to get our meals we didn’t mind at all as it’s all freshly made. We selected a fish pie, hunter’s chicken and double burger and quite honestly we all enjoyed every mouthful. Really good portion sizes, well presented and piping hot. My fish pie was delicious with lots of fish and prawns in a creamy leek sauce served with a salad, the chips were excellent, and the hunter’s chicken was probably one of the best we’ve had outside as it was a proper chicken breast not butterflied. The burger was immense and delicious by all accounts. Three clean plates and each of us were very pleased with our choices. We thought it was exceptional value for money as the prices were so reasonable for the amount and quality of the food. Service was friendly and efficient so overall this was an excellent choice for our lunch and will definitely be on the list to return to.

Nice food although the meat was a bit tasteless. Great vegetables (really fresh) and our starters were hot and tasty. The service got a bit muddled so food was coming out at all different times - sometimes members of the group had finished when a meal came out for another group member. Staff were very apologetic about it all.

Had steak and ale pie made by Peppers in ths village. Came with mash and a good portion of veg. Carrot, broccoli, peas and sugar snap peas. Gravy on the food plus another gravyboat full. Absolutely delicious. Typical pub grub menu

Disappointing. Half my chips were overcooked and cold, the other half hot but looked pale and undercooked. My partner’s pie was good, but the veg were overcooked and not properly drained. Whilst it wasn’t particularly expensive, we wouldn’t go back. No issues with the service which was good. And for the record we didn’t complain at the time as we were part of a group, and somebody else had chosen the pub.

Family meal after my birthday outing with family. We all agreed that the food was as good , if not better, than anything we'd had before. We all had a different meal and everyone cleared their plates, even the youngsters. Very pleased and, hopefully, we can repeat the experience.

We were staying up the road so booked a table. Pub served good beer and cider loved the relaxed atmosphere and the fact that it is very dog friendly. People were playing cards and games and it felt like a good old fashioned country pub. Staff were great even though it was busy and food arrived quickly. Good pub grub that is reasonably priced and the pies really are worth a try!

Quiet pub. Food was good solid pub fare.. not amazing but tasty and reasonably priced. Just what was needed after long day walking. The locals were chatty and the landlord friendly. A real fire plus dog friendly. We loved it.

Very good pub grub and service

Nice little pub, they serve food but we only got drinks when we were there. The barmaid was very nice, we tried the local ales and we sat by the fire, it was so cosy!

Lovely meal in a friendly busy pub. Dog friendly so a bonus, friendly locals and the pies with veg (and extra gravy for me) was superb. Good pint of Pedigree too!

Went New years eve and it was OK.

Soooo We ate a Sunday lunch here several times. Each time (sadly) got progressively worse. The first time was excellent. The second was OK. The 3rd was awful. First time we received a large gravy boat each. The 3rd time a tiny coffee cream jug. The first time the meat was OK. Subsequent visits the meat became tougher and more chewy. My partner asked for vegetarian (no meat but extra veg) and his plate arrived without meat and no extras. In fairness when we enquired they did send out a fresh dish of veg. The veg on the 3rd visit was limp and looked microwaved. Please see image. It's such a shame because we are small eaters and ordered the small size which was great value (at least on the first visit) We live super local and had hoped to make this our weekly Sunday dinner. Perhaps they've had a change of kitchen staff. I've still given 3 stars as everyone there is lovely and we all make mistakes. Perhaps it will improve but we're anxious about wasting our money xx

Great place, good selection of nice meals at very reasonable prices, pleasant service, good beers, also at fair prices. Decor is fine if unexceptional, typical country pub vibe. Will be back. Recommended.

Can't fault this cosy pub, we are a walking gang of 8 & we do appreciate a good lunchtime pit stop. We all enjoyed our meals, good value & proper chips! a rarity these days, the sausages, fish fingers, the prawns etc were all delicious. We'll be back thank you

Lovely pub, warm welcome and looked after a very big party of 18 of us twice in 2 days. They were very accommodating with us just turning up Sat tea time and the food was ace. Sunday lunch was great in a giant Yorkshire pud 😊

Shared a lovely meal here with my friend. Hadn't been here for years & we were not disappointed. Booked online & had quick reply, staff friendly & welcoming, very cosy pub atmosphere, everyone was having a good time, very nice that dogs are allowed in & they were very well behaved. I had chicken curry with rice & nan ( could of had chips, or half rice half chips, which was a nice choice) the curry was full of flavours & not dry at all as some can be, rice was very fluffy & light. my friend had sausage, veg & giant Yorkie, choice of mash or chips, she had chips, it was a very large portion, we both enjoyed our meals. The menu was quite a wide choice for saying it's a small pub, we both had lemon meringue for pudding, it was lovely & lemony in the middle, the meringue was soft & not hard which was different as mine always go rock hard. The young girl who served us was marvellous, she was taking food orders, bringing food out & serving the bar, that's multi tasking !! We have now booked a group Xmas meal in December which has realy good choice. Looking forward to our next visit. Thank you.

Just the place for a family get together, it quiet and the area we were in didn't have sports screens all over the place. Staff are friendly and efficient, locals seated around the bar tend to hog the serving area. But I suppose they are the ,'bread and butter' of the pub. We have had several good value meals there over the years.

A last-minute booking they could not have been nicer. A friendly welcome with fabulous food including a treat for the dog. Thank you. we had a lovely evening.

Must remember to as if food is available before ordering drinks. For the second time today after getting drinks we were told that no food would be available as there was a well attended wake. Last time it was a petanq competition. So after drinking up we went down to The Boat for a lovely meal.

Lovely oldey worldly pub in quaint Middleton with beer garden and outdoor seating. Staff are friendly and food was delicious. The menu is limited but it’s all pub classics. Everything was spot on and super generous portion sizes, which is just what you need when you’ve been hiking all day. Prices very reasonable in the current climate. The pub is dog friendly. Recommended! Especially the Prawn Cocktail. Can’t fault it.

We’ve just been a lovely walk on Middleton top popped into this pub for a spot of lunch, Annabel and Ella were amazing even though I broke the dog treat jar. The girls were absolutely amazing and lovely. A credit to the pub. The food was definitely five star very tasty xx

Really great place for a delicious meal at a reasonable price

The gang of locals stood at the bar and blocking 3/4s of it while fewer than half the tables inside were taken was certainly not particularly welcoming. The food was fairly average - laminated menus advertising fresh-from-frozen meals running the gamut of fish to burgers to pies to curries. Four cask pulls with only three on, but nothing particularly interesting

The young ladies behind the till were very pleasant unlike the landlord who was very rude and obnoxious when we complained about the steak, it tasted off and had a horrible smell. We ordered 3 burgers 2 of which had to be sent back twice as the order was wrong.

Stopped by for a Sunday drink which was ok. The 2 staff we met appeared to be totally fed up which was a pity. It was sunny out but it was hard to find a vacant bench that wasn't on a steep slope. The kids play area was unusable with the remains of tape discouraging entry. I expected better as it's in a nice position and the reviews are very positive.

Pub needs a sparkle Staff friendly, food was ok, 8 meals in total, my burger was good but all the food was a little lukewarm. We ate outside in the beer garden which again needs some TLC. Hopefully this pub gets some investment as it's on a great spot

Small pub in a nice location. Has a beer garden for nice weather although it's not the most level of Gardens. They also serve food during limited hours. I had the double burger which was a good size and price.

This was not planned. But amazing staff warm welcome and the food was excellent 👌 I had the pie and friend had the burger 🍔 and nothing was wrong. The size of the burger was shocking, and you need a good-sized tummy to finish it. Will definitely be going back again 5 stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 from me. SUPER PUB 👌 👍

Really nice home-cooked meal at a good price. Not posh, but we thought it was our nicest ever pub meal.

If your looking for a friendly local pub with basic pub grub. You've come to the right place. Things we liked about this place; open fire friendly staff, chips. Whilst we were there, the mens toilet was flooded and staff didn't attend to during the 3 hours we were there. Their meals weren't quite hot enough, looked good and were nicely presented, but much of the food tasted like it wasn't fresh and the veg was overcooked. The waffle was very dry. I'd say the food was slightly disappointing and would recommend avoiding the deserts, although the bread and butter pudding was a hit. I've given he pub 3/5 because of the lack of response to the toilet and under par food.

Nice place to eat with a good pint. There biggest asset is the young barmaid who holds the place together and is worth every penny she gets and a bit more

Visited twice now 28th for drinks & 31st for food Jan ‘23. Definitely a lovely place. Staff very friendly and checking all is ok, which was lovely. Food - excellent piping hot and huge portions. We were even given updates when our food would be ready from the barman. Who was lovely happy to chat - thank you. As a visitor to the area will defo visit again and recommend to others 👍👏

I came here for the 4x4 meet up that was posted round open invite. Cracking pub frendly staff, good beers on tap, food & bbq was delicious 👍🏻 hope to see more of this happening.

Really cosy and friendly, it's a great place to stop if you're wandering or cycling the high peak trail.

Lumpy, cold mash. Overcooked veg. Average chips. Do not come!
