We were told that the lamb shank was unavailable. It’s a set menu with only 4 main course choices. At £30 for two courses & £35 for 3 courses you would hope that an alternative would’ve been provided. The choices left were a basic pasta dish, fish & chips & a burger and chips. We went for the burger which was unexciting and served warm. It wasn’t a pleasant eat at all. If I’d paid weatherspoon prices it would have been passable. Wee things like the condiments were the cheap sachets of ketchup etc served in a wee bowl. Something you would expect in a greasy spoon. The restaurant itself lacked atmosphere. It was empty. Lighting was poor. It felt like you were sitting in someone’s basic conservatory or a warehouse. The temperature was not uncomfortably cold but could’ve done with being warmer. The puddings were average. Chocolate mouse, was ok & the banana cake was bland. We decided on only two courses as we could tell before we even ordered that we’d be disappointed. I am not hard to please but this was a very poor meal. To improve the experience would take very little. If staying at the hotel I’d suggest having your evening meal elsewhere. Service was ok. A very young lad served us. He looked like a fish out of water. I’ve two teen sons & they would probably be similar, but the restaurant lacks so much that an outgoing and welcoming staff would help to lift what felt like a very flat evening. Breakfast was better. And the orangery felt very different. Food was ok. The space felt more welcoming.

Very poor slow service, we were the only ones having lunch in the Orangerie. Trying to grab the attention of the servers proved difficult, although there were three standing a few yards away, and not looking in our direction even though we were seated at the table closest to them. We had to call out to order drinks. And then it took forever for the food to arrive. It was a pity. As it is such a lovely setting.

The food was buffet style and was good. There was only one morning where I found a hair in my eggs (and no it wasn't mine since I have short hair and it was very long). They did remove the pan the eggs were in, but I'm not sure if they made fresh eggs or just picked the hair out and brought the container back out. The staff was always friendly and accommodating.

We were sat on time for our afternoon tea booking but it was over 40 minutes before our orders for tea arrived. Our food took even longer. You get one cup per tea pot and need to ask for more but trying to flag down the waitstaff is difficult as there is often no one in the room. They didn’t provide us with milk for our tea. We had to ask for that and so that was another five minutes of waiting. We asked twice for water for the table and never got it. I guess the water glasses on the table were just for decoration. We asked one member of staff for more tea and some water. He said yes. Then promptly disappeared and never came back. We had to ask another member of staff and that took another long time before our second cups of tea arrived. Food itself was fine but the scones were small.

We ate breakfast on both days we stayed at the hotel. Restaurant in a conservatory type addition to the castle creating a bright space which is ideal for breakfast. Delicious breakfast menu with a fair range of options. Full Scottish breakfast was a treat. Fresh croissants and pastries recommended. Had porridge both days - very different each time. Preferred the creamy version on the first day.

Visited for a family lunch. Firstly, it’s a really nice place to visit. Lovely building with great views. Ample parking. There was also a wedding on which may have contributed to slow service for us, as otherwise it wasn’t busy. There’s a good choice of meat, fish, vegetarian dishes. I had mushroom tart for starter which was really nice and chicken Kiev for main. It was ok, without being brilliant. Not very garlicky. Others commented similarly with their mains. Staff are nice.

The Orangery is the former castle greenhouse converted to a restaurant for Dalhousie Castle. If you're a guest at the hotel, this is your only choice on site for breakfast. But they also serve a good lunch and dinner.Because of the layout of the castle, the kitchens are some distance from the tables. Which means service is a bit slow. The Orangery has also chosen to staff the restaurant with young people from other countries (we met kids from Germany, Poland, Italy and Greece during our stay). They are lovely young people, but European service is not always up to American expectations. All in all, we enjoyed our meals at the Orangery, getting to watch the scenery outside the glassed windows (and do a bit of surreptitious people watching, too). It isn't a bad choice when your only other choice is to drive into Bonnyrigg or one of the other local villages in search of something.

First impressions count. Having food out, uncovered in a hot room, with flies buzzing around, is not conducive to having a lovely breakfast. Poor choice of meat and cheese. no tomato juice, unless you want to pay extra. Staff not clearing table away quickly. Untoasted toast and sludge coffee. Not a place I would choose to have breakfast again. Staff training required to make it more pleasant and covers for food and a cold tray to keep meat fresh in a warm environment.

Took my gran for a light lunch last Saturday. The orangery is bright and spacious with lovely views over the meadow. Unfortunately the seats and tables are looking very tired - i actually worked here 16 years ago part time and the seats/table were the same but think they have just been painted! We had sandwiches and a drink which was nice enough. The service is lacking a lot - the staff were all friendly but were missing for 10 minutes at a time so we had to wait before ordering another drink. once i had finished my food they were straight over clearing my plate even though my gran was still eating! Then later on when we ordered another drink and she was finished her food, they never cleared her plate - even when we requested the bill.

We had dinner, our first night in Scotland. We were disappointed that the other touted Dalhousie restaurant was booked but very pleased with The Orangery. Food was fantastic (my son loved the braised beef cannelloni and he is a picky eater). My husband and I both chose sirloin (wonderfully cooked) as our main course. About half the price of the 2 rosette restaurant - and much more relaxed. Sophia was a great server - even tolerating my goofy kid. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. We were recommended to give Dalhousie Castle’s, "The Orangery," a try and booked a reservation for four on Sunday evening at 8pm following my conference in Bonnyrigg. We arrived early and enjoyed a look around the historic site [incredible location] before being seated in the The Orangery. Pretty much for the time we sat down it was difficult to capture our server's attention [FYI, it was NOT busy at all ... only two other tables of customers at the time we arrived... and one had already finished the meals] ... a young Italian lady from Italy, so she said. Passing us by several times, in spite of our attempts to get her to serve us [it's NOT a terribly big place and she most certainly knew we were anxious to be served by this time] she felt the need to clean another table first, bring menus to new customers who'd arrived after us and then return to them in order to serve water, and then stop to clean up the floor after a child [at the table next to us ... who'd already finished their dinner's and were actually being served by one of the three other servers attending to customers] spilt a glass of water... by the time I actually caught up to her, while she was returning [I guess] to the kitchen ... she acted surprised that I was overly concerned about the poor service. I told her if we were not immediately we are leaving!!! I did not see her again ... and we got up and left [NOT HAPPY AT ALL] ... and went to Gigi's [an Italian place also in Bonnyrigg] and was warmly greeted, served adequately and enjoyed the meal and the warm and caring service ... who, unlike Dalhousie Castle’s, "The Orangery," was genuinely appreciated.

No china cakestand and linen but paper napkins and a wooden drawer contraption with a greasy and grubby surface - which despite having booked we waited for half an hour to appear - a problem when one of the guests was 16 months and one was pregnant. My chair had chewing gum on the seat and the cutlery was stained and scratched. There are no blinds in the orangerie and we had to ask to have windows opened as the chocolate cake was melting (as were we) . We specified no cheese; no smoked salmon; vegetarian; and the (advertised) children's version of the afternoon tea - none! And the vegetarian option comprised 4 items containing fish!!?? Oh and a pastry case of only caramelized onion! When the adults had already finished eating we had to ask them to bring the toddlers ice cream. No refills of tea/coffee were offered. Staying at the hotel we are both our evening meal and breakfast here. For evening meal was a really good price, around £22 for two courses of really good food. I had the salmon starter and chicken main, my partner the pate starter and burger. Although it is quite a restricted menu we both found things we liked, and if we hadn't of been so full would have definitely had pudding. The salmon was amazing, a large amount of it and tasted fresh and lovely. The pate was also good. Both mains were big and tasty too. For the price we were so glad we are here rather than the dungeon restaurant as we couldn't find anything that we liked and I'm sure portions would not have sustained our appetite after being at the rugby all day. Cannot comment on the service as we had room service, however this was prompt and hot. Breakfast was plentiful and fresh again. We came towards the end of service and would have liked to see some replenishment of fruit and pastries available however the cooked options were more than enough for us. All tasted good quality however some items (bacon and fried egg) were definitely overdone. Service was fast and attentive.

Had a very nice afternoon tea at The Orangery. Dalhousie Castle is beautiful, which was worth travelling here just for this. The Orangery had a good atmosphere, the staff were friendly and helpful from the moment we sat down. The food was nice and we ended up taking some of it home with us. The tea was fine, just wish there was a bigger selection of tea. A tea menu would have been helpful, feel a little silly asking the staff to tell you every type of tea they have. But overall it was a nice experience and will definitely return.

The afternoon tea was expensive and bland. The cooked Breakfast reminded me of my military days and food rationing. We all got 1 piece of bacon, 1 sausage, 1 mushroom, 1 egg, 1 piece of black pudding and 1 piece of haggis. The kids did not want the haggis or black pudding but no substitute or additional bits were offered.Such a pity as the Orangery experience let down an otherwise lovely experience

When we went for breakfast following our stay i have to say it was well above standard, freshley cooked and just the right amount. If i had wanted any more of it it would have been the black pudding and haggis, amazing. Staff were polite and helpful.

The full Scottish breakfast was really good, couldn't fault it & didn't leave us bagged up and it wasn't greasy at all.We also had a light lunch smoked salmon sandwiches were lovely. My husband ordered a cheese burger & opted to change the cheese for blue cheese and it wasn't an issue. The homemade burger was really tasty.

Dined here recently during a stay at the castle. Food was excellent, our waiter was very pleasant. Supervisor a little less so - mix up with what wines were available that lead to further confusion. However this did not ruin our experience at all and would happily come back again. Breakfast was superb, definitely recommend the full scottish if you don't fill up with too many pastries and muffins at the buffet beforehand!

I volunteer here once a week but also go to the Wednesday community lunch where a set 3 course meal is served at 12.30. Open to all, you pay by donation but there is no obligation. Lentil soup with sourdough bread, vegetarian lasagne with garlic toast , coffee and chocolate hazelnut cake was yesterday's delicious meal. There's a friendly atmosphere and willing service. The Storehouse also supports several young vulnerable adults who help to serve and to clear tables - always with a smile. I feel really lucky and proud to have the Storehouse in my town. I hesitated to write this review because I volunteer in the shop but I am also a café customer.

Inexplicably just stopped being a restaurant. Can't find anything about it online. Open but for what purpose I don't know. Now the guests at the associated premier inn next door have nowhere to eat. We were regulars and it was great to have somewhere affordable and reliable to get a meal. We are owed an explanation.

There have been many changes since we last visited Whitmuir pre-pandemic. The farm food shop has gone and has been replaced by Junkshop Antiques (which used to operate from smaller premises on the site); The Dancing Light gallery apparently moved online some time ago and the vacant unit they previously occupied was due to be re-launched as a (Christmas) shop when we were there in November 2022. The café looks the same as before (minus the gallery’s paintings) but opened again under new ownership in September 2022 and now trades simply as Whitmuir Cafe. I’m glad to see the log burner remains in place as it is needed to try to keep this cavernous place warm at this time of year. Quercus Garden Plants still operate on the site however when we visited garden plants were not something we were looking to explore. At the time of our lunch visit there was a slow, steady flow of customers but these are large premises to fill so it lacked atmosphere. The menu choice is modest and we ordered up their Toastie of the Day, which was ham and cheese, served with house salad and dressing £6.95). My wife’s request to replace the sourdough bread with brown bread was met. I ordered a Bagel with chicken & lemon mayonnaise, also served with house salad and dressing (£6.25). We both enjoyed our lunch - the chicken was plentiful and tasty with the mayo, the toastie filling good quality and we both rated the house salad and dressing very highly. The only criticism was that the cutlery knives seemed blunt. The coffee we had along with the food was very good - Flat white (£2.95) and Americano (£2.60) - so we ordered another to go along with the home bakes both of which happened to be gluten free. My wife requested the smaller of the large looking slices of Treacle and Lemon tart on display, which turned out to be wise since she was unable to finish it; and I had an Almond slice which I too was unable to finish. Verdict on the cakes was “okay” however we have only rarely found a gluten free cake which we could say we really enjoyed so that is probably just our taste. Overall cost of lunch was just over £29 which we thought was good value. Staff were friendly and efficient. It’s early days for the revised format and not as attractive an overall destination for us however we wish them well. Check opening hours if travelling - seems to be Wednesday to Sunday, 10.00am until 4.00pm at present.
