Upstairs at the Footman is an upscale restaurant in a pub setting. The food was a level or two above your average bar grub. The atmosphere was also pub like but another level above. Our delicious dinner included red pepper and sweet potato soup, beetroot and endive salad, duck confit and pistachio terrine, cider-battered sole, malt glazed chicken, and cod supreme with lobster. Does that sound or look like your typical pub meal? It was delicious!

This is the third year we have have used the private room at The Footman for a business dinner. The event staff (Amira) are fantastic, extremely knowledgeable, answer all queries at speed and with a consistently clear answer. The staff on the evening are incredible and work hard to ensure the event runs seamlessly. I feel so assured knowing a high profile event with run so smoothly and all queries on the evening would be dealt with professionally and with ease. The food and wine list is perfect and carefully thought-out. They ensure all dietary requirements are catered for and patient and helpful with all dietary queries. As a company it is important our guests come away from an evening with praise and feeling good - The Footman certainly delivers on all these. Cannot ask for better, we will be back in June 2025 for our fourth year, thank you to everyone for such a wonderful evening.

Had a nice dinner here. Not a large menu but thought their fish & chips/other food was better than most. The gentleman who waited on us was friendly & helpful. Even though they had their regular 'after work' crowd stopping in for a beer, we were still given immediate attention. A nicer environment, also, than some other pubs; plus decent pricing for drinks & meals.

Staying in Mayfair for a week, we were walking around in the area to find a dinner spot. We found this gem on one of the quieter streets and we were very happy with our selection. The place had a lively atmosphere but wasn’t loud or crowded at all. Traditionally they serve dinner upstairs, but upon being offered a choice we opted for downstairs window seats. The menu had sufficient variety and multiple excellent choices for everyone. The food was delicious, perfectly prepared. But the part that made our dining experience really amazing was the genuine kindness of our waitress and the entire staff. Our waitress was very friendly and accommodating from the moment we walked in throughout the entire evening. When I was uncertain about the beer selection, instead of just trying to describe what they had on tap, she immediately walked me to the bar and offered me tasting samples, wanting to ensure that I would be happy with my choice. Even staff from the kitchen checked on us asking if we were happy with our meal. Overall: great atmosphere, delicious food (good portion sizes, even for someone from the US), absolutely top notch service, good value for the money in a beautiful, quiet neighborhood. Very strongly recommended.

The pub appeared busy with a good vibe. If we'd been 20 years younger I'm sure we would have hung around downstairs for a while, instead my wife and I enjoyed a very relaxed meal upstairs. Food was good pub food - simple and tasty - we had the fish and chips and the steak both excellent!

We ordered a child’s burger meal and two adults burger meals, when served they were identical except the adult burgers had pancetta and a sauce, I joked we had mistakenly ordered three kids meals and asked the staff if in-fact we did have three kids meals as the potion of fries were also tiny, when told no I was genuinely surprised…. The kids meals is £7.00 and the adults £23.00!! We again raised our dissatisfaction when paying the bill but were told there was nothing they could do which is utterly ridiculous, the adult & child’s burger & bun are absolutely identical, how can the price of the adult meal be justified?

We went here for our work Christmas function and had a really nice Christmas dinner. We had one of the private dining rooms upstairs and were really well looked after by the team all night. Everything was amazing until we were unceremoniously kicked-out at 22:30. A shouty man came into the room and ordered us to leave IMMEDIATELY! Not what you want or expect when you have spent ~£1.5k. Real shame as everything else was very good.

Pretty underwhelming. You get to pay £3 for a slice of bread to go with your soup, and the fish and chips was ok. The tiniest mouthful of mashed peas (?) in a little ketchup pot, pretty tasteless. Service was pretty slow, real challenge to get a bill and pay. Honestly, £100+ for fish and chips and a bit of chicken and potato and two pints might be ok if it was great, but it was all so underwhelming.

I have been A MAJOR fan of the Footman and as far back as the Only Running Footmsn. Been there over 100x minimum and always enjoyed the pub, food and staff. Visited in late May early June and have to say this is the worst bar staff they have ever had. Not friendly Not even remotely customer friendly. I'm speaking of the two shorter men who work at the bar. Horrible and should find a new line of work. Not surprisingly it was never extra busy several day, since the bar staff probably scared them away. Also, I've never seen Coach & Horses down the road Hill St MUCH busier!! That's a first. Very sad since we skipped it many days of our 3 week trip due to bad attitudes and disinterest in customers. Not usual for a fine pub. Unfortunately, after years unless they get better staff it will have to ho off my list. Sad to say. Management take note. Replace the male bartenders with bloaks who smile and are nice.

My wife & I dined here May 21. We were graciously received and seared immediately with our reservation. Our waiter was attentive but not distracting. We ordered wine and we asked to sit for a while before ordering. Nice wine list! My wife ordered the bone-in Dover sole and I had the sliced leg of lamb. Flavors were spot on! Kudos to the chef. Neither of us are dessert eaters but we saw some beautiful ones being delivered to others. We strolled back to the Hotel Chesterfield in Mayfair completely satisfied with our choice of The Footman. This is a must visit for locals and visitors alike!

A sad example of How to ruin a wonderful traditional Mayfair hostelry. I have known this pub for 40 years as The Only Running Footman. It had its history in evidence in its decor. Red leather seats, carpet, prints on the walls of Footmen serving trays of drinks and old dark oak bar fittings and tables. Traditional cosy lighting. All stripped out. Renamed “The Footman” with not a trace of its history. Modern uncomfortable seating, stripped wood floors, old bar fitting replaced, no pictures or prints and two big stainless steel dumb waiter lifts at the end of the bar. It’s called modernisation. I’m in my 60’s now so you are clearly not interested in my age group. So much for what it looks like. Let’s move onto service. The website says it has a Sunday Roasts menu and food is served till 8:30 pm on Sunday. When I last came here for a Sunday evening roast dinner a year ago we were greeting with a waiter saying “ sorry no Sunday roasts” disappointed as we were looking forward to it. So this time on booking for 9 April, at 7pm we asked if there would be Sunday roasts. “Of course” came the reply but to make sure you aren’t disappointed I suggest you pre order. We did. Then we checked that the pre order had been received and got a confirmation email. We arrived at 6:30 for a pre dinner drink at the bar. There was one bar person rushed off her feet with the few other customers wanting drinks plus orders for drinks coming down from the dining rooms. Eventually she was joined by another guy to help out. He made us two great bloody Mary’s but forgot the vodka! We were is good humour and forgave him and vodka was served. Wait time was 20 minutes. He offered advice that if we were eating upstairs we should order with him now and he’d sent the wine up in the lift. Otherwise we would have another long wait. So up we go at 7 pm and shown to the second floor dining room. First impression. What have they done? Stripped off the wall plaster to expose really very unattractive brickwork. Maybe if they had done a test piece they would have stopped the strip? So there are the old sash windows and frames sitting proud of the expose brickwork. Metal conduits run up the walls to give it the “industrial look” Really! For a pub which has been in place since 1749!! It’s just wrong. Tables and chairs were poor quality wood and floors stripped of course. 80’s pop music was preventing normal conversation. No waiter knew how to turn it down. Eventually the nice bar lady came up to show them there was a volume knob behind a fitting on the wall and relieved us. We were thankful we had prebooked our roasts so at least the food we wanted would be served. But no. Waiter announced “ Sorry no roasts” we reminded him that we had confirmation of our pre booked roasts. What could he say except “ but of course”. Then can I get you a drink? We told him to check the dumb waiter and our wine arrived. Then we waited, and waited. At 7:25 we asked our waiter if the endive and blue cheese starters were in evidence? Lots of apologies and “ I’ll go and see”. Another 10 mins and they arrived. Some dry endive leaves and morsels of blue cheese. No dressing. No bread offered. We asked for bread and waited and waited. A different waiter arrived so we asked him if there was any bread. Another 5 minutes and we offered to pop downstairs to get the bread. It then arrived as we had finished our starters. It had been defrosted and was a couple of slices of brown bread and unappetising. Then we waited and waited. The cheery waiter from the bar arrived and apologised profusely for everything and offered more wine FOC. We said what we really wanted was our roast meals but graciously accepted one glass of wine. Then the roasts arrived at 8:30. The chicken was succulent but literally swimming in a sort of soup gravy. The lamb was equally swimming but was over cooked and impossible to even cut. The gravy was so salty it made the lamb and the veg swimming in it inedible. My partner was so hungry he ate the chicken having scooped it away from the gravy. The nice waiter asked if he could get me something else. Hungry, I asked for some cheese. This arrived but the Camembert? was rancid. I normally only write positive reviews but this whole experience was so truly dreadful I was compelled to write this. Apparently as it was Easter Sunday the manger took the day off. The staff admitted they were new and inexperienced. In fairness they were coping with an inexperienced chef and poor communication. I used to choose Greene King pubs and beer they were always good. Sadly not now.

I arrived late on a Sunday to have Sunday roast, which was fantastic. I had the lamb, which had roastie potatoes, carrots, cabbage, and a Yorkshire pudding with an out of this world gravy. The only reason I don’t give this place five stars, is the continued “slamming” of the door behind the bar every few minutes. If they could muffle that sound, the establishment would be much more enjoyable.

The true test of any central London pub is how it performs for drinkers during the busy few after work hours on a Thursday or Friday and this one didn’t.Firstly the downstairs bar area is not the biggest space and despite the front section being for vertical drinking the back section is packed with tables to maximise the food trade and whereas it’s probably OK on a quiet early afternoon, with the after work crowd in situ it becomes an uncomfortable and noisy space to try and enjoy a pint.I can always live with this and turn a blind eye if the ale is good. This is a Greene King tied house with four ale hand pumps on the bar and to walk in a find the two Green King ales of IPA and Abbott not available should have been in hindsight a big clue to what was to follow. Alongside the house Footmans Best was a guest ale of Sambrooks Wandle. This started off OK but by the second round was clearly reaching the end of the barrel resulting in returned pints to be replaced by the Footmans Best, which being another boring GK brew was a bit of an oxymoron on the naming front. Infuriatingly we also experience some shocking short pulling and for the second round of seven pints, five had to be returned to be topped up to a full pint, something you should bloody well get when it’s costing you £5.10 a pint. Then by the time of the next round the Footman’s Best was clearly going off as well, although it continued to be poured by the staff. At this point we cut our losses and headed to the pubs in Shepherds Market. It’s lazy cellar work and lazy bar work like this that gives real ale a bad name.

Luego me regalé mi postre favorito. . pudín de caramelo pegajoso. .

Best fish and chips in London! The dinning room upstairs is a hidden gem and has nothing to do with the pub downstairs, also worth visiting!

My best friend and I were out touring in the rain and looking to stop for lunch and a drink. This bar was the coziest, friendliest place. And the fish & chips were hands down the best I have had anywhere. Crispy and flavorful, and the chips were also delicious. Had the house brew. This place is why I love London.

Love the story of its historical origins. What sets them apart is the outstanding service staff . Whether at the bar for a recommendation for a pint, or fast delivery of the somewhat unique menu.

We like the Footman for the simple fact that it offer a good value for well prepared simple food in Mayfair. So much of the food in the area can be overpriced and either too formal or too precious to enjoy every day of the week. After two days of dining on rich foods this was a welcome change. We especially liked the fact that traditional Sunday roasts are served during the afternoon hours and we really were looking for a late dinner option in the area. Our concierge recommended this place and we couldn't have been happier. We both enjoyed roast beef with Yorkshire pudding both of which were well prepared.

We visited on a weekday afternoon during lunch time. The downstairs was packed and when we asked for food, we were shown to the dining room upstairs. The food was expensive, but very good though the portions a tad small. The atmosphere was rather crowded and noisy so it wasn't that enjoyable.

Great traditional London pub with plenty of history which looks well cared for. Just dropped in for drinks. Busy with a good atmosphere. Not too expensive considering it is Mayfair.

No volveremos

We had heard so many good things about The Footman and found the entire experience disappointing. It felt like we were practically begging to have basics like water, bread, salt and utensils brought to the table. The room was extremely hot and yet all the windows were closed. The food was fine but could not compensate for the sub standard service. Recommended for a drink but nothing more.

We have been going to the Footman occasionally for a few years and have found the standard of the food to be reducing over time. Yesterday we had a Beetroot and Pumpkin Tart (this was in actual fact a Wrap, just warm, obviously microwaved) and Baked Cod The cod was served with Broccoli and a Mussel Chowder. This again appeared to have been microwaved. Fish cooked but skin un-appetisingly floppy and grey, not crispy if it had been baked, as described on the menu. The broccoli was under cooked and nearly raw and the chowder was just a mess. We'll go to the Wolsey next time. Not much difference in price but food properly cooked and better service.

We tried some dish from the Sunday menu in this little, cosy pub in the heart of Mayfair. The pub is clean, service is good, the choice of beers satisfactory; unfortunately, while the prices are Mayfair standard (=high), the food is not. The Sunday sirloin roast was chewy and tasteless, and the fish & chips was terribly greasy, just a thin fillet of haddock covered by a thick and heavy batter. We won't come back.

Perfect pub if you are wanting an early evening or post-work ‘bevvie’ with colleagues or London friends. Very historic pub that has a great backstory based on all the Footmen that we’re employed by all the rich British Mayfair families of 1700s London. Alas I t’s all dark glass & blinged up black SUVs and folk of dubious financial histories in the houses nearby now.

The restaurant above the pub at the Footman is an elegant, but not stuffy, cozy room, with white cloth table linens. I stepped back before entering, wondering if I had walked into a private room - not so. Service was friendly and the food excellent. I had the chicken terrine, beef blade in wine reduction, and panettone bread pudding with marmelade and creme anglaise. The dessert alone is worth a return visit.
