first time in this pub, very unusual, staff so pleasant even the regular sitting at the bar joined in the conversation, every table was reserved for a later time for a pub quiz, clearly very popular and deserved from the reception we had. Certainly a go back to place

Such a lovely pub with a very friendly attitude and some seriously great cask ales. Price wise more than competitive and to be honest no fault to be found. Plus the kitchen is open a couple hours a day. Very happy to recommend

Always a treat. The only real beer venue in the town centre and one of the few decent ones in the whole town. Staff are welcoming, know about beers and look after their customers well

Meet up with old colleagues we spent from midday till 5.30 in there, yhe staff could not be more accommodating the food was excellent and the prices were ok too. Great vibe, even for a Thursday. I was surprised at how busy it was, but I guess it's the new Friday

It's a bit of a dive and could do with a lick of paint and some atmosphere

Good place for lunch (huge ploughman's!). Also a poke-stop. Update: they don't seem to be doing the huge ploughman's any more. What a shame... Still a decent place though, and friendly staff.

I found out about the realest ale festival on social media. Having promised at work that I would spend the day in a pub, I decided that this would be worth checking out. So glad I did. The venue is fabulous and the staff very helpful and attentive. As for the ales, all in really good condition. The locals are also friendly so if you are into your real ale, this is as good a place as many.

First time visit for me meeting friends, very busy and popular, excellent drinks choice, good atmosphere and friendly and helpful bar staff. Well worth a visit.

The Olde Trout is an outstanding pub. Peter and Claire, the owners, have created a really special place to drink. Fantastic beer, in a warm friendly environment and the best service in Southend. The Ale is especially notable as the pubs own ale is brewed under arrangement with Wantsum Brewery and is always spot on. At only £3.50 a pint I'd wager it's the best valued pint of quality premium beer in Southend. Lunchtime daily food special is always worth sampling too. All round this pub is a little gem and a great credit to the owners.

The Olde Trout is an outstanding pub. Fantastic real ale, the 'Olde Trout Special Ale' is brewed under arrangement with Wantsum Brewery and is always excellent and tremendous value for money. The place is a real credit to Peter and Claire the owners and I couldn't recommend the place highly enough. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Wonderful little pub, bit of a hidden gem. Doesn't have all of the bar/eatery bells and whistles, but is super friendly. Go and hide in the whilst trying to escape the shopping trip to the High Street..

We have done a couple of acoustic sets and their open mic nights on a Thursday. Always great fun. Staff and punters all really nice. Beer is good too. 100% would recommend.

Friendly staff, and a good selection of real ale, right opposite Sainsburys, so makes the thirsty work of popping to the supermarket a pleasure. 😉👍

Great food and lovely staff. I have been drinking here once a week (I'm diabetic so go easy on booze) for over 10 years and have never been disappointed by the beer, the food or atmosphere. Busy in evenings but quietish at lunchtime which makes it ideal for a group lunch or session.

Great place to meet friends for a drink and a chat, the staff are friendly and always remember your name and your drink. Clare the owner and her husband are great hosts, it is always a pleasure to visit The Old Trout. Drinks selection is extensive and well priced unfortunately I have not eaten here as yet to rate the food but I am told by friends that the food is very good and reasonably priced. Look forward to my next visit. Keep up the good work Clare.

This used to be our "post cinema" venue of choice but it seems very run down this year. And no card payment? Not sure if this was a one off, but likely explained the clientel, namely old boys in their sixties sipping farty ales in each corner. It's a nice pub but seems to be turning itself a bit niche and alienating the majority of humans who haven't got cash on them.

Quite surprised by the positive reviews so maybe it’s changed but I visited here a while ago and it didn’t even feel like a pub. No one was in there and it lacked any sort of atmosphere. Also the decor at the time felt a bit clinical, hence it not really feeling like a pub.

We were visiting Southend for a few days and stumbled across this pub on trip advisor, we popped in for a drink and the landlady Christine was very welcoming and chatty, we went back another couple of times and also had a bite to eat which was very good, really nice staff & good value for money, will be back if we are in the area again

Visited on a Sunday evening for a quick drink whilst visiting family. The quiz was on but I was able to sit at the bar and have a friendly conversation with the locals. Great beer and a great pub.

An oasis in the town of Southend

I have visited a few times but mainly late afternoon when it has not been very busy .The beers on offer are very good with local breweries well respresented .The food is very good prices .

I made this mistake of not visiting here for a long time. The reason simply because it is by the town centre and I generally avoid pubs there. How wrong I was. Good reviews popped up of the place in my phone so gave it a go. A proper pub. Stone floor, nice bar, good beer. More importantly a friendly landlady and a huddle of regulars at the bar 'chewing the fat' and who also were friendly. Gave the place a nice feel. Will now be in my list and making it a regular stop for a pint.

We were looking for a pub with real ales, close to the Ilfracombe Hotel. Looked on-line and this seemed the best bet. Things to note, they don't run tabs and are cash only. Unfortunately, they only had two real ales available, both amber and not very strong. Food prices were very good and although we only had sandwiches plus one baked potatoe, very tasty. The lady serving was great and very good humoured.

Nice friendly atmosphere and good reasonably priced beer.

I have been to this pub several times and the food has never varied - it's always good and home cooked. We run a social networking club and are due to start our regular meet ups there and know that we will be made welcome by John the owner and Chrissie his wife.
