Mid week lunch with my mum and daughter. We received a warm welcome and the staff were attentive throughout our visit. We had main courses, desserts and drinks and were not disappointed. The food was hot, fresh, tasty and fairly priced. We will definitely be back.

Lovely early midweek lunch for two. Good service, enjoyable drinks and food. My wife and I ordered fish and chips off the main menu, rather than the slightly smaller lunch time one. It was served piping hot, fish, chips and mushy peas, just as it should be. Nice Guinness and a glass of wine. Well done to the Old Boat House. We will be back for more. Thoroughly recommended

Today I visited for dinner and was left feeling very disappointed. My self and my wife wasn’t sure what we wanted they had an offer on 2 courses for 17.50 ish which is printed on the menu so I asked the waitress what was included on the offer and I was told anything of the menu so we both ordered a starter and a main when we came to pay this was not the option and was told we had to pay the full price this is what as resulted in this review as some thing you normally over look but as we were paying full price I may as well complain on the thing I would usually keep quiet about. To start sitting in the place it was cold and not a comfortable temperature to sit and enjoy the atmosphere . Then when the starters came mine was wrong so I had to wait 15 minutes which was annoying because we was there as a couple and not a solo eater so I watch my wife eat then she had the pleasure of watching me eat mine. Then our main course came I ordered the mixed grill and my wife ordered the gammon unfortunately my mixed grill was swimming in grease from the fried egg which I used the napkin to mop the grease up all the time the bar manager watched me do this and never once asked if any thing was wrong. the steak was cold in the middle and the gammon was full of fat and chewy my wife’s was also swimming in grease as she had the pleasure of 2 fried eggs on hers 🤮 the skin on chips they advertise are none existent they was just frozen chips at best. There was flys everywhere and when the manager watched me batting them away he commented how they have loads of them at the minute. I also over heard him telling another customer they only had 1 chef in the kitchen. My advise would be learn the menu you are serving then you can give real advise to what you are serving and not tell them you have offers that don’t exist. Look to serving courses together then customers can enjoy or be disappointed together. If you don’t have the staff to cook what is on the menu then cut it back to what is manageable that way you may be able to give average or better rather than a poor attempt and serve cold food in a grease bath. Also probably shut for a day and give the place a proper clean it may keep some of the pest at bay

I went here last night for dinner with friends, what a lovely evening we had! The staff were amazing, chatty & very friendly, perfect table service & the food was delicious! The chef, I believe his name was Mark, most definitely worked his magic in the kitchen!! A lovely little village pub that i would recommend to anyone i know! Well done to a lovely team, you are totally smashing it!!!

Don’t normally do reviews, but the food & service was absolutely shocking, so just thought I’d warn you all. Everyone in the pub today was complaining about the waiting time and appalling food. We Went for a family meal, we waited an hour for food to come out, and it wasn’t edible in the slightest, Chicken schnitzel & chips were all dried out and couldn’t even cut into them, The medium/rare steak was cremated as anything, with a handful of peas. Complained to the team leader, all he said was ‘sorry it’s been a bad day in the kitchen’ but from looking at the reviews, every day is a bad day in the kitchen! Will def not be returning, shocking!

Came for the first time on Sunday 28th July with my boyfriend, after hearing good reviews. Both had starters and mains, including the chicken strips which has home made batter, gorgeous! We had the Sunday dinner and steak and ale pie, the meat was so tender and melted in your mouth. You can tell the sauces are homemade. We loved it so much we came back the next day and had a faultless experience again and beautiful food. Hats off to the chef!! The staff are super friendly and are very attentive, great atmosphere and a lovely little hidden gem! Very surprised to see only a 4 star on here due to irrelevant negative comments what we can see, definitely a 5 star and will 100% be returning 😊

Popped in last weekend for lunch. The blonde lady with the glasses had a bad attitude every time I went to the bar. I asked if we had to order at the bar and she said "Well it would help if you had some menus first wouldn't it".When I ordered my food I asked how much chips and garlic bread were as they were not on the menu. She spoke to me like I was stupid and asked me if I expected it to be any cheaper than it was. She told me to leave by a back door because of Covid, I noticed that both doors had an 'exit only - no entry' sign on them. She said the food would be 30 minutes which I said would be fine and I don't mind waiting. An hour later our starter arrived. I've never eaten garlic bread so greasy, I had to go to the toilet to wash my hands after it. My main was a chicken, cheese and bacon baguette and I had to stop eating it halfway through, the grease was making me feel sick. It was as if the chef had put half a block of cheese on the baguette and microwaved it. Overall probably the worst pub food I've eaten in the last year. Staff were rude, waited an hour for my food and it was all round just a terrible experience. Will never be returning.

Q: When is a chip not a chip ?A: When its a skinny fry.We visited the Boathouse and to be fair our starters were both lovely, no complaints there. We ordered our mains, beer battered fish, CHIPS and mushy peas and Steak pie, CHIPS and veg.We were served barely warm skinny fries. When the waitress asked had our meals been ok I mentioned I was expecting chips not fries and had I known there were no proper chips then I`d have ordered something else, as would my husband. Now some people might think I`m just nit picking but not so and skinny fries have their place with certain foods but not with others and certainly not with fish or steak pie.Anyway we were fed some gobble de gook about it being difficult times and their suppliers weren`t up to speed and they had to do the best with what they`ve got etc etc etc but at the end of the day every supermarket from miles around and every frozen food outlet have mega mountains of frozen chips or better still try peeling a few potatoes and make some.If something on the menu is being substituted with something else then please tell the customers when they`re ordering and then they can decide whether they want it or not. If I`m paying just under a tenner for fish and chips then that`s exactly what i want !

We got seated and waited for our meals to arrive, to what I can only assume was the manager (a lady with short blonde hair) go over to a couple (customers) and talking about tripadvisor and was blatantly mocking people who had left bad reviews! how shocking!!! me and my partner & the couple next to us heard every word! Such bad customer service to sit and talk about customers in such manner. We had planned to stay for desert & a few drinks but decided very much against it because speaking about customers in such a way is just not acceptable. I must say the 2 starts i left was for an older lady with red hair, she was amazing and made sure our meals was ok, did we need anything else etc! Maybe she should be put in a management position rather than the actual manager bad mouthing customers! First and definitely last time i’ll be going!

So we visited The Old Boathouse a place where we have eaten many times and always had a pleasureable experience. On entering the premises it was clear that they are trying very hard with their COVID-19 restrictions, good social distancing, plenty of available hand sanitiser, clearly marked arrows on the floor as well as track and trace information. Some of the staff were wearing masks some without, plenty of screens etc.Sadly that's where the good stuff ended, we were taken to our table and we placed our order, one member of my party ordered the vegetable broth, and the mushroom risotto, the starters for our group of 5 arrived timely, but the soup was terrible, the peas within were hard practically still frozen, very bland taste only slightly bettered by putting lots of salt and pepper in! Once the table had been cleared the mains arrived, the mushroom risotto was horrendous it arrived looking like a brown porridge and tasted worse, its was tasteless and very poorly presented, very sad after waiting for this meal, to have such a poor attempt at the meal, immediately after tasting it the refusal to eat was imminent, the waitress/manager was called over and politely advised how bad this meal was, her immediate reply was "its risotto its like that" to which she was clearly told it was not! She asked if we wanted something else to which a chilli con carne was ordered, sadly by now the rest had eaten well over half of our meals, when the chilli arrived the plate was very hot and it looked good, but on tasting this chilli the spice heat was ridiculous and somewhat dangerous, it was like eating a Naga pepper, its a good job that the person eating did not have an allergy to spices as this would of been a different message.Consequently the chilli to could not be eaten and one person went without a starter or main, we were sat there with our drinks and my 11 year old wanted a dessert but instead the bill was dropped in front of us, this was the final straw as it seemed they simply wanted us out because we had voiced our concerns over the poor meal, i asked to speak with the manager, i took her outside to speak as I did not want to raise this issue infront of other patrons, I explained my concerns, i again told her about the risotto and the ridiculous chilli and the fact the bill was dumped on me, she said the bill was a mistake.A waiter came over and apologised saying the bill being put in front of me was his fault and he was sorry, his apology was accepted as he was very apologetic and sincere.Overall vety disappointed with our mesl notably one of my group had no meal which is unacceptable. It will be a while before we eat here agsin as im very disappointed and a nice meal was spoiled by petulance from the staff/manager.

We visited in passing locally this afternoon just to grab a quick coffee before a walk down the canal. The staff greeted us with happy smiles and a lovely welcome. Despite just popping in for a drink, we decided to take advantage of their 2 course lunch menu for £8.95 and it was well worth it! Very generous portions and a nice selection for such a decently priced lunch menu! We also were given colouring crayons and paper for our toddler to enjoy at the table which was a lovely touch! In summary, it was a really pleasant experience, well priced, family friendly with super staff! Well worth a trip if you’re local to Astley! Lots of pub classics as well as sandwiches and jackets too.We opted for the homemade steak and kidney pie and the chilli with chips and rice. Both dishes were really lovely and as we opted for the “light bite” versions, they were only £7.45 each - a real bargain considering how much food you got! If these were the light bites, I can only imagine how big the normal portions must be!We’ll definitely return as we really enjoyed it so thanks very much!

We came here for a nice meal on a Friday night - The food was great and the atmosphere perfect. We were greeted by a very friendly young man who continued great service throughout. It’s a shame it was let down by an unfriendly waitress who seems to be referred to quite a lot on these reviews. She was very off-ish and made us feel unwelcome. She didn’t say anything rude as such, however it was her general attitude making a pleasant atmosphere seem uneasy. It is a bad sign leaving a restaurant and jumping straight on Tripadvisor to see if anybody else experienced the same. Unfortunately, that seems to be the case. I hope that my review, in addition to the other similar reviews shows the effect poor staff working as the front of a company, are able to have. For this reason only, I’m afraid we won’t be returning.

Booked a table for lunch. Arrived and were shown to our table and asked if we want to order drinks. The server then came after about 10-15 mins and took our order telling us there would be a 45 minute wait. We said it was ok in my experience it is usually less of a wait and they tell you a bit longer anyway. Our food arrived 1 hour and 15 minutes after ordering! Not impressed is was now nearer to tea time! My daughter who is vegetarian had order the cheese and onion potato skins and the mushroom pepper pot starters to have as a main. The skins came and had bacon on them. she sent them back stating that she didn't want them now as she didn't want to wait again. She started to eat the pepperpot only to find a hair in it! This upset me very much as it meant that she now had nothing to eat. By this point i wasn't enjoying my own food (the hair put me off!) and i asked for the manager. i was asked if there was a problem and i said yes. she then said i am team leader how can i help. i told her that we should have been told on arrival about the waiting time and that we had waited longer than told. i then told her about the problem with the food. i am not usually a complainer and it takes a lot for me to speak up but this was just unacceptable, it ruined what we had planned to be a nice lunch out with my mother and daughter which we don't often get chance to do. we were not charged for my daughter's food and we were given a 50% discount on the rest of the bill. the staff were apologetic and blamed it on being so busy. Sorry to say but we won't be visiting again which is a shame because it is a nice place next to the canal.

Nice good value food but they need to employ some staff who don't make you feel as though they actually want you to be there! Been a few times now & whilst the lad was great & came to take our order the other times we have been ignored & then had a grumpy female who made us feel unwelcome. Not sure that I'll be back

We booked for a family meal here, 3 generations, for a Birthday celebration. We were surprised how full it was on arrival, but our table was ready and service was very quick. The menu is a great mix of traditional and a bit different, everyone could find something to suit. We were so impressed with all the staff who went out of their way to ensure we were happy, especially checking portion sizes for our daughter.

We visited for a meal (18 us) on new years day to celebrate 2 family birthdays. We were very impressed that they managed to seat us all on one table. The menu is varied and there is also a specials board. The food was delicious, the service was great. It's a lovely location for sitting outside in the summer (right on the canal). Great little pub. Good gin selection too.

Went to Old Boat House with family and friends .Pre ordered our meals as we were a party of 11.Our table was ready when we arrived.Staff very attentive ,starts over the main meals were served and no one was kept waiting.I didn't find the food exceptional I had the steak pie ,the pastry was too thick which was a pity as the filling was really tasty .My other disapointment was the sticky toffee pudding .In reality a plain sponge with sticky toffee topping still it was nice sponge was light and custard smooth and tasty. It was a pleasant evening with good company but I wouldn't choose to return .

Called in here at about 5pm on a Saturday evening on our way to a 60th birthday party in the area. It was fairly busy and we hadn’t pre booked but they were able to find us a table that was reserved for 8.30pm, so plenty of time. We haven’t been here before and our first impression was that the atmosphere was fairly ‘lively’ with a number of children, which is to be expected at this time of the night, however, I will say that this wasn’t a problem and although noisy they were all very well behaved. The staff were lovely, very friendly and attentive and gave an excellent service. The menu had everything that we liked to choose from. I opted for the pan fried salmon and my husband had the double burger, everything was beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. Thank you, we really enjoyed ourselves and will certainly return if we are in the area.

Tried here again, food exactly same standard just like having a mid week tea during week at home. Wish they would start making proper home made food and not frozen/ready prepared. It would make a huge difference to the place

Been here a few times but our recent visit was the best yet! 3 adults and 3 children. Made very welcome and excellent service. Plenty of choice for both adults and children-lots on the menu! Very busy as it was quiz night later on in the evening, but we were not rushed and had plenty of time to enjoy our meals. Waitress very friendly and helpful without being overbearing, yes there was a little bit of a wait for our food but that’s because it was cooked fresh and extremely hot when it arrived! Great little beer garden for the children during courses! Many thanks to the staff and chefs excellent visit!

Birthday party - Food - starter brilliant very big and worth the money. Main a special of steak and kidney pudding disappointing. Gravy nice, pudding not what I was expecting too thick, steak ok but kidney hmm. Not much veg though. Wee carrots and one piece of cauliflower. Late arriving at the table. Not everyone served at the same time. Not much room to pass through to the ladies toilet. Used to be a nice place. Changed somewhat.

Food was ok, but i remember a time when it was spectacular. The steak we had was a bit pale and tasteless, not at all seasoned before cooking. The staff were mixed - there was one sweet, helpful lady with blonde hair tied back who had a lovely attitude and great customer care. The others though had a bit of attitude - you felt a bit like you were getting in their way of them doing something else if you asked a question. Another practically called me a liar when a sauce I'd ordered was incorrect - 'why would they send this out if it hadn't been ordered?' was the response! The starters were lovely, the puddings were great and piping hot, and the place itself is great. I just think they either need more staff on busy nights, or a reminder of customer service training for all.

Have eaten quite a few times here and our meals have usually been ok but on this occasion it wasn't. My Husband and Mum both had a 2 course Sunday Roast Beef Dinner and both said the meat was tough. I had a Prawn Salad with a side order of a Jacket Potato. I have never in all my years seen such a burnt offering of a potato....skin as hard as a golf ball and the inside had completely disintegrated. Mum had Jam Roly Poly for desert which she left as it was so stoggy ... overcooked (or microwaved) and tasted terrible. The staff didn't seem very knowledgeable regarding the menu as when we were ordering the deserts our choices were changed twice as they were unavailable. Would I recommend... No ....not any more until they get a new chef and new staff.
