Wonderful staff, very friendly and professional. Cosy traditional pub, originally from the late 16th century. Haunted by three ghost's, one was moving about where we were sat, it suddenly became very cold but it didn't bother me.🥶😱😲 Food as usual was tasty and filling, burger and chunky chips and two Sunday lunches from the carvery. Small plate £11, medium £13 and big plate £15. Took two desserts home, was really full up after the food.

Just far too expensive for people to afford in the present climate. Prices have nearly doubled after the takeover. 2 elderly couples food came to £96 for lunch, you can't do that every week, and don't forget Wetherspoons is 2 blocks down, it was never a problem for previous tenants. The food used to be spot on.

Food was okay. Service not the best. Had to ask for menu numerous times. Then had to ask for cutlery for mains, virtually slammed on table. Was just lacking someone taking ownership. Staff were just talking hard to get attention. Was disappointed as heard good reviews. Wouldn’t return due to service unfortunately.

This was our first visit since it’s been under new management and I think overall we preferred it before. The prices have gone up quite a bit which didn’t put us off, as we don’t mind paying more if the food is better but the food isn’t any better than it was before. We still enjoyed the food but the portion sizes were poor, especially the children's. Our children finished their food and complained they were still hungry, which i've never seen before! The children's pizza looked like a cheap pizza and definitely was not home made. I had cheese and onion pie and chips which was nice enough but there was only about 6 chips! Table service is now provided so this is one thing that we preferred. I have seen comments regarding the price increases that state this is because they are providing quality home cooked food/better suppliers but i dont feel this is the case at all. The food was no better than our numerous visits under the old management and portion sizes a lot smaller!

Have been in the past and was really good. The staff on this occasion were very pleasant indeed. The food however really fell short of previous visits. Fish and chips left a lot to be desired, batter was soft and very wrinkles considering supposedly freshly cooked, chips were a bit on the limp side and the potato was only just cooked, some of the thicker ones were hard. The gravy with the rag pudding was bland and tasteless and the rag pudding looked quite sad for itself. Sticky toffee pudding was cold and dry. The food used to be a lot better than on this visit I have to say. The quality of the food does not warrant the prices paid. Personally I wouldn't return for a meal again on this showing. We did receive a refund for the dessert but would have rather a nice one instead. Staff really nice though.

I have been a regular customer for many years. Recently visited for a meal with family. The menu has been reduced dramatically with very little choice for vegetarians. Sadly the food was not as good as previous visits. Will not be my first choice to re visit for food wich is such a shame as never had a complaint in all the years we have been eating here.

Popped in this afternoon for a family pub lunch. As soon as we got there, the staff welcomed us and found us a table that fit our pram. With the new management, they offer table service now, which is so much easier than taking the baby to the bar and trying to remember everyone's order. The new menu was amazing, and I could’ve ordered everything on it! I had the hot chicken peppercorn baguette, and my partner had the cheese & onion pie with fresh homemade chips. The food came quickly and was delicious! The staff brought condiments and checked on us during the meal. Overall, the place was lovely, clean, and had a nice, relaxed family vibe.

Overall experience was poor. Customer service whilst the team tried it really fell short. We had to ask for a new drink due to the lemonade being completely flat. We had to ask to order food, then when ordering we was informed of items not available. There wasn't any check in no condiments offered alongside food. No menus brought back for dessert. Lots of waiting around without many check ins. The food was good. There was a long wait for our mains and we was informed the fish had been dropped on the floor, so we had to wait even longer. It felt the team were inexperienced. A drink was pretty much threw on the table when served. Really disappointing as we was hoping this could be a new spot. However after paying 70 pound for very inadequate service we won't be back. Such a shame.

My husband and I have just returned form having lunch at the Olde Boars Head under the new Management of Alex Worsely. From start to finish it was just perfect. The food was fantastic - we had Rag pudding and the Cheese and Onion pie, both were exceptional. The proper home cooked chips were a delight also. The new table service they offered was great, truly a 'restaurant experience' of not having to go and order form the bar but to be waited on, was just lovely. Having the history of the pub explained at the back of the menu was a treat for any keen historians, dating all the way back from 1622 was an extra special touch. The staff were attentive, wine options were a better offering also. A great local pub, serving great home made 'Pub Grub' and great prices too, in a lovely historic pub with great staff, couldn't ask for more. We will be back, most definitely!

For the price you can't fault the Sunday Roast either. Choice of three plates - small, £10 with choice of two meats and as much veg as you like. Medium plate £13 and large plate £15 choice of 3 meats (beef, pork, turkey). My husband opted for the large plate. A feast for three men!!!

We booked a table for 8 ppl on Sunday. We phoned to say we have someone who was vegetarian and some of us will be having the carvery and of the main menu. At no point was we made aware that the normal menu stops serving at 5 and carvery doesn’t have a vegetarian option. The lady went and asked the kitchen if they could do a vegetarian meal and a kids meal, which they could but wouldn’t do any other meal from the main menu as my son wanted a cheese burger. They offered a kids dessert for an extra 50p which was fine but when coming to ask for that they said they havnt got any left. When I later looked at your website it says carvery and pub food is served till 6. Really poor communication.

The food was tasty enjoyable. The service was a bit off, didn’t understand you had to get your own menu place order at bar sat for 15 mins before realising. Table was a bit sticky not comfortable to sit at due to legs in tight space. Also specials board hidden away not visible to all. Prices on website way more in actual place for example New York chicken on website £9.95 in pub £12.50 chilli £8.95 on web in pub £12. Had to ask for everything condiments knife fork serviettes. Very casual atmosphere casual service. music low enough for conversations. Outside space looked good. Indoors was a bit cold had to put coat back on after a bit. May 2024 overall not sure I’d go back. The fact that it’s very old building is no excuse for tardiness. Could do with a refurb. The food made it tolerable, it was tasty.

Actually really like the pub and food, have been many times but won’t be visiting again! I got a ticket in the car park here even though I paid for parking. When I showed proof to JW Lees head office and the Boars Head staff and rang a number of times, to show I had paid, I was told ‘the person who can operate the system will be in later’ and that the ticket will be removed. I was told this on about 3 occasions and that someone would ring me back, but they never did. It would have been polite even if you removing the ticket for whatever reason, to call back as you said. Poor customer service, ignorance and loosing trade for no reason. Other pubs you can go to without having to deal with this type of nonsense. Agree with the other comments around the parking which is an intentional scam to extort more money from people, as presumably they aren’t making enough.

Just been into the Old Boars head to pay £80 deposit for 16 people for lunch Monday 11th December, the original booking was for 18 people explained to the tall ginger haired barman we were unsure if the two extra people would be coming, but as soon as it was confirmed ,could we add the extra two people to our table(s), there was a lot of 'ermmms' whilst looking at his empty diary page then a NO, I explained, are you going to allow me to walk away with the deposit money and over £100 takings for the 11th over two extra seats, plus your diary is empty, his reply he had three weeks to fill the date, however clearly the thought of losing money over such a trivial thing he agreed to add two extra seats if required. This left me feeling comfortable handing over deposit to such an unfriendly person and I asked that if by any chance we were unable to attend due to work commitments could we transfer the deposit onto another date, 'not a chance that's what the deposit is for', his reply, to be fair I do get this however his whole attitude re the extra two chairs and his attitude in general made me cancel the whole booking. I quickly went to the Hare and Hounds on Oldham Road, who only wanted £20 deposit, have no issues with extra chairs being added to such a big table, and no issues with swapping the deposit to another date if really need to.
