As advised. Best sausage and pie you could ask for. Nicholsons’s upstairs have to go for dinner. Service was great in pub and in the restaurant. Ambiance is fantastic. Feel the history of the place. Great atmosphere. Highly recommend if in Manchester.

Fabulous evening in this historic pub. Great food and great service from our waiter Matthew. The pub/ restaurant has a lovely cosy feel to it and is very welcoming. We had meat pies, chicken and avocado salad, it was all delicious. Looking forward to going again!

For food we split the Beef Rib, Shin and Brisket Pie served with long stem broccoli, mashed potatoes and carrots. The Pie was really tasty and rich. The meat was tender. The let downs were the carrots and broccoli (the broccoli was an extra £3). The carrot was pretty much raw and the broccoli was over cooked, lacked flavour and 4 very small pieces for £3! The other let down was the service. We didn’t even get a hello upon waiting for a table or when the server came over to take our order. Basically it was what do you want. Our server obviously didn’t want to be at work. He was angry and it showed with everything he was doing around the restaurant. Even swearing under his breath while setting tables. Shame really because there is potential. The pie was superb and with a little work the sides could be too! And fix the service and this place could be great! We did check google reviews and decided to give it a go based on this. But usually we stay clear of these places as they tend to be gimicky and touristy and I think this again was the case unfortunately.

Lovely historical pub in the centre of Manchester, good attentive service by Ciara and lovely food. Both pie dishes were really good , for any vegetarians I would highly recommend the mushroom/ tarragon suet pie it was delicious

The pub looks lovely from outside. The good reviews led me here. However, my experience was disappointing. The music in the pub is too loud and not appropriate to the audience and not fitting for the pub vibe either. After a while I was greeted by a waiter who didn't want me there. I didn't feel welcome but rather like an unwanted chore. He only warmed up when he realised how much I ordered for one person. In the end he was very efficient with bringing the food and bill though. The best part about my experience were the non-alcoholic drinks. They were really tasty. I then snuggled into a gorgeous corner in the pub, unfortunately near the kitchen. From the kitchen there was a blasting sound of rap music and a chef that was rapping along. It was so loud that one could clearly hear it in the guest room. The food was the worst part though, the sausages had dry ends and the brokkoli tastwd like it had been fried in old oil. However, the mashed potatoes and the gravy were delicious. Overall it was not a nice pub experience and I won't come back unfortunately.

Went in and didnt find a place to sit

We were having a pre show meal and couldn't have chosen a nicer place. The staff were welcoming, warm and friendly. At one point a group of rowdy men came in the restaurant, who hadn't booked and started singing loudly. The staff dealt with this in a professional manner which prevented the situation from escalating and the men went on their way happy. We were very impressed with the speed at which the staff dealt with this matter.

Used this pub for years and always had a good meal .Our last visit was disappointing my friend is vegetarian and only ever has had a couple mains to choose from . Menu needs looking at

We visited the restaurant today, and the initial impressions were excellent. The food was delicious, with great attention to flavor and presentation. Moreover, the atmosphere was truly unique, as the restaurant is located in the oldest building in Manchester, adding a special charm to the experience. Unfortunately, the service did not meet our expectations. We ordered one dish, but a different one was brought to our table. To make matters worse, we later realized, after returning to our hotel, that we had been overcharged on the bill. It’s a shame because the place has so much potential. With some improvements in the service, this could easily become one of the top dining experiences in the area.

The atmosphere, the service the quality of the food was amazing very tasty. My father had the sirloin steak, I had the beef pie. Keira was our waitress she was lovely and frienldy please give her a raise or manager position she deserves it. We tried the Nicholson's Pale ale one of the best ale's we ever tasted. Please export it to Budapest as soon as possible there would be a huge market for it here. Think about it please!!!!

It was perfect . Had drinks downstairs until our table was ready . Lovely atmosphere downstairs and where we ate. Attentive friendly staff. Lovely food all at a good price. This was our first time dining and it was faultless . We will definitely be coming back

Bit pricey but the food was very nice. Service was a bit slow but clearly due to a lack of staff on the rota rather than the servers being slow. Servers were very nice and accommodating.

The interior design was lovely, providing that authentic old English pub feel with a pleasant atmosphere. The service was generally good, and food was good overall. The chicken pie felt was difficult to cut into, and there was more pastry than the actual interior. Otherwise, it was a good meal overall.

Too long waiting for food, and when we finally got served, it was disappointing. The pub itself was well structured, and the timber interior was relaxing, adding to the atmosphere.

Visit regularly when in Manchester. We usually eat, but it was fully booked on this occasion. Stayed for drinks. Lovely cosy old English style pub with lots of history and a good vibe.

Can you really beat a good pub? Loved coming in here for my first time, note that bar doesn’t open till 11:30 and food is 12:00 it doesn’t mention that on google.

Easy 5 stars on all aspects! I had set a high expectation on this restaurant after reading the reviews and they didn’t fail me! The best fish and chips I’ve had, not oily but still crispy. The sea bass dish is really nice too. The white sauce is spot-on. Food is delicious and served in generous portions Service is great! The waitress took a fantastic picture of me and my friend Atmosphere is very cozy! Perfect lighting and warm atmosphere that I’d highly recommend anyone who’s looking for amazing food and service

Quaint English pub near the cathedral, prices are a little higher than average, but we were made very welcome and it's worth a visit to sample a pint. We didn't eat so I can't comment on the food

Super friendly staff, and a really cosy atmosphere! We had the steak pie and a house salad (the dressing really wasn't my taste, way too sweet and intense, so - 1 star. But everything else was nice!)

Very quiet place, highly recommend!

First visit here and it did not disappoint, well located and with a unique atmosphere it is a classic example of what a traditional British ale house should be. Due to the architecture and old fashioned design there are a lot of stairs to climb if you cannot get seated at ground floor level and that may hinder the less mobile. However it is well worth eating here as it has a simple menu at good value and attentive staff, we went for the pies and they were super. Well recommended if you are in the area, be aware this is a very popular place and gets very busy at peak times.

We have waited for 20 mins to give order after sitting at the table. Atmosphere is good historic however they didn’t have fish and chips. 🫠🥲

VERY slow service (massive queue and one serving). Young fella in and out from behind the bar, yes probably serving food etc. Absolutely disgusting behaviour how he spoke to me. Told me to move as I won't get served where I was queuing although i was with every other customer. When I asked him to come and speak to me about why, he just shouted across at me but wouldn't come and face me. Another staff member appeared and wanted to know what was going on, other customers even spoke up about how he was towards me. Too late people, problem not resolved and you lost our customer as we walked out.

A real tourist trap 2 servers for 60 people, obliged to order and pay on their site. Very... even too simple cuisine with a reheated taste. After 45 minutes of waiting without even receiving our drinks, the brownie arrived before our dishes and as dry as a brick. Small commercial gesture, a free drink. Disappointed, only the decoration raises the level of the tables, not even clearing or cleaning when we arrive

I visited The Old Wellington during Christmas week for their Sunday Roast, the festive atmosphere added an extra layer of charm to this historic pub. We had the Sunday Roast, it was everything you’d want for a hearty meal during the holidays. The roast beef was tender and flavorful, paired with a golden Yorkshire pudding that was perfectly crisp on the outside. The roasted potatoes and vegetables were cooked to perfection, and the rich, savory gravy tied everything together beautifully.

Good friendly service. Ordered the Brisket Pie - really good - nailed it. A bit shy on the mashed potatoes though. The beef pie was a little small - for £16 they can do better - but enjoyable nevertheless

Visited the Old Wellington as a family group for a midweek lunch during a shopping trip to Manchester and were very happy with all aspects of our visit. The pub is right in the heart of the city, close to the Arndale shopping centre and Christmas Markets. The pub was charming inside, very Olde Worlde with timber framework and wooden ceiling beams. The menu was extensive and consisted of a good selection of home made pies as well as traditional pub meals. In addition, there were several options for those with special dietary requirements. The food was excellent, good portion sizes and reasonably priced. Special thanks to Ciara who was very friendly, helpful and efficient. Will definitely visit again.

Love the place because of the atmosphere and the food. The steak and ale pie is the best and is a must try. Food and service are great. You should go there the evening before a game day. The atmosphere in the square is electric. You will love the food.

So nice friendly services and atmosphere in this old building. Mulled cider is high, high, high, high recommend, and Nicholson is usually an excellent bier. Fish pie …artisan style. More than happy to recommend this pub, and try to seat at the second or third floor that is less busy! The Old Wellington pub were move from the neighborhood to this site some time ago, but they don’t change their Tudor style, all wood and details of the old one are intact.

Great little pub . We booked as it is near Christmas and getting quite busy in Manchester. The food was gorgeous. I had the steak and ale pie which was one of the best I have tasted. The pastry melted in the mouth and absolutely no get on the steak. My friend had the fish pie which was packed with different pieces of fish and she said it was very tasty. The lovely server, ( I wish I had gotten to their name) was very friendly and helpful. I will definitely be back.

We came for a Christmas meal as our work do. The atmosphere was amazing and the place was buzzing with people. The meal was wonderful with plenty of portions. The starter of prawn cocktails with salmon was delicious and generously portioned. The server looked after us very well, and though it was busy, we were never rushed. Fantastic night and fantastic meal. Well done to the staff!

This was a great place and quite cozy. I stopped by for a Gin and Tonic and I loved it. I will come back as it has an amazing atmosphere of an old time pub.

Nice, historic, pub. Very popular, so you should be prepared for traffic jams.

The building is very nice, the food service was appalling. We ordered food using their QR ordering system. We got a confirmation. We then waited for 45 minutes. We then asked when the food would arrive. We were told 15 minutes. We then asked again and two of the three orders arrived. The other order did not arrive. I approached the manager who said “I will ask the kitchen”. Eventually my chicken burger and chips arrived some 20 minutes after the first two foid orders. Attitude was shocking, was not a bit impressed. Would not recommend to anyone and would not visit again ever!

Not recommended as a bar. Drinks can only be ordered at the bar on the lowest floor. If there are too many people, you have to go up a floor or two. When it comes to cocktails, the selection isn't exactly huge.

I recently dined at The Old Wellington in Manchester, and I can't recommend it highly enough! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Our server, Catherine, was absolutely fantastic—attentive, friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable about the menu. She made sure we had everything we needed and offered great suggestions. The food was delicious, beautifully presented, and cooked to perfection. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience, and I can't wait to return! Five stars all the way!

There were 3 of us drinking and dining here. We waited 1 hour. 2 meals arrived the 3rd did not..... Yet. Won't be returning!!

Finished work and had diner with my wife and her sister. Service in the restaurant upstairs was good. We had a fish pie and a mushroom pie that were perfect. The cheese and bacon burger was also good.

Had a 3 course meal with family. Really enjoyable, good atmosphere, each course was lovely and service was great. Will definitely be back.

Very nice place in the centre of MCR. Unfortunately I have to consider food no good as we expected for being a traditional kitchen. We had fish and chips, with fish soggy in the oil, chips uncooked and a baked lemon (why not fresh???). They don't have a local beer in the restaurant menu, but they have foreign drinks such as Italian beer, south Africa red wine (???) and so on. I was forced to have Pinot Grigio Rosé (What's that??? We don't serve it now ere here in IT) and was not good, tasted like gasoline. I drunk it just because it was very expensive for being so awful, I wanted to forget. My ears were in pain for the music inside, they have the best musician in the world but they don't recognize and appreciate them at all. By the way, staff was very gentle and professional and they make a discount on the bill. Greetings.

Nice historical pub in the city center of Manchester. Doesn’t have happy hour but enjoyed the vibe and ambiance. The bathroom wasn’t fully functional as there’s no paper towels, toilets don’t flush properly and the hand dryer acts up a bit.
